A magnificent work. The climax of the Gloria is one of the most ecstatic moments in all English music, but HH was a master of those. Personally, as a Christian who sometimes finds it hard to believe, I am both intrigued as to why HH, RVW and others, all agnostics or atheists, managed to write the greatest Christian music of the past century. And maybe, in that glorious ecstasy, shot through with nostalgia, regret and pain, above all over the loss of his son, one hears someone who dearly would like to believe but can't - a position I respect and understand. I tend to weep when I hear this and the Hymnus Paradisi.
And beautiful images too - as someone who for two years lived a few yards from the Wye in Hereford, they bring back beautiful memories. Lovely too, hearing Peter Barker's beautifully modulated voice.

I was at this concert. A most memorable occasion with HH himself sitting in one of the side boxes high above us and acknowledging the applause at the end. This pioneering performance (the first in nearly 30 years) opened the way for the public to become aware of the power and beauty of this magnificent work...we now have two excellent recordings of it. An excellent line up of soloists and the Bach Choir were up to the formidable challenges of the choral writing. The only fly in the ointment was an infuriating cougher whom you can hear in some of the quieter parts of the Sanctus and Benedictus..he was sitting just behind me...

This is simply gargantuan. Love it. Thanks for what is the only version of this I can find on UA-cam.

Howells' daughter Ursula speaks about the Missa Sabrinensis here: ua-cam.com/video/WbXUz8FREas/v-deo.html. With some clips from a tape of a rehearsal for this performance (inc. the climax of the Agnus Dei).

I regret Mr. H., that he could not believe. I am a Christian as well like the other User who wrote this about Mr. H. It is a pain for me personally, though I can accept his Position. If he had lost his son, it was for him very hard to understand this, why his son had to pass away before himself. The music of HH is extremely beautiful. It reminds me a little, at the Kyrie non the music of the old Netherland school of the 16. century. At the Dorian Mass. He has used also counterpoint, but not only.

      Hardly, of course. Sorry.

Many thanks indeed for uploading this. Astonishing listening. Was this your own recording off the radio?
