Love it!

I have a shavette and a straight razor. But for me a Merkur 39C or Muhle R41 w/feather blade's tough to beat and a lot less trouble.
That's a solid collection of shaving tools! Which straight razor did you go with?
@@Portlandrazorco THIERS ISSARD"Evide Sonnant" 5/8 Straight Razor
@@londoncab2814 very nice! My (Hunter's) first razor was a Thiers-Issard as well.
Great video! Can't wait to get one of your straight razors!
I have coarse beard growth and skin is irritated very easily. Currently I shave with a Merkur34c. In your opinion would a straight razor be kinder to my sort of skin and hair?
Hunter, the guy in the video, also has a coarse beard and sensitive skin. He prefers the stiffness of a half or quarter-hollow straight razor over anything else. Taking extra time for prep prior to shaving also helps a lot, no matter what blade system you use!
Nice video.. thx for the info, just getting started in straight shaving, been de shaving for a year. I live close to there but work out of state, will have to stop by for a cut and shave and check out your place
Thanks! We would be more than happy to host you for a visit, give us a shout when you're ready to drop in.
No problem and yes against the grain.
Gotcha. Honestly, we don't recommend shaving against the grain for most people unless you already shave that way and know how your skin will respond. This is for a couple reasons, but the short version is that it can be irritating and increases the likelihood of ingrown hairs. That said, shaving ACROSS the grain is much gentler while still achieving a smoother shave. Give it a try!
@@Portlandrazorco I usually do three passes. With, a cross and lastly against. This is how I thought most wet shavers do. But yes against the grain can be irritating I agree.
@@iwgl1981JMR Right, many of us were taught the 3-pass shave, and it works really well for a lot of people. For people with especially coarse or curly beards like Hunter's, the against-the-grain pass just isn't as realistic.
Loved this video as I have just started straight razor shaving. You gave a lot of great little pointers. However my most difficult task is going up with the straight. Can you do a video for that?
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you found the video helpful.
When you say "going up," do you mean shaving against the grain?
Is a 5/8 razor easier or more difficult to use than a 7/8 razor or does it not make a difference?
I would say the diameter of the blade doesn't matter as much, probably not as much as the geometry of the blade (Extra Hollow ground, Half Hollow, Wedge, etc.). For beginners, unless you're planning on going through a TON of hair (thick beard), you want to stay with Hollow to Extra Hollow ground for smooth shave. I started off with 5/8 and now prefer 6/8 or so because of the extra lather that it can hold on to so I don't have to rinse off blade as much, otherwise I'm fine with using a 5/8 too.
They're simply different. The 7/8ths, especially in the quarter-hollow grind, will have more heft and carry itself through dense beard growth more easily. The 5/8ths, being narrower, is lighter, more maneuverable, and easier for some folks to see around in certain positions.
what model of straight razor is that as i am looking at getting one thanks john
I notice that you advocate for with or across the grain for the 2nd pass; what about against? Do you have any techniques for shaving against the grain or video demonstrating this?
Also, definitely recommend using an alum block for aftershave too, helps to close minor nicks and prevent infections and then using a gentle, non-alcohol based lotion to moisturize and protect.
Good question! Not everyone can--or should--shave against the grain. Hunter's face is prone to ingrown hairs when shaving against the grain. Scott, on the other hand, can shave against the grain on the first pass. Because a lot of our content is geared towards beginners, we try to focus on techniques that will work for most people.
Is this good for African American men
With a little practice, it's the best shave you can get! Straight razors allow you to manage your own blade angle and pressure for a less aggressive shave, which helps prevent ingrown hairs. The thorough beard prep and aftershave treatment shown in this video will also help prevent razor bumps, irritation, and ingrown hairs.
Portland Razor Co. Thanks for the reply
I work in public safety so shaving is a must. A fellow black coworker of mine mentioned a straight razor for less irritation and bumps, will definitely try this out in the near future.
It's good for anyone regardless of hair texture, though it's takes more practice than cartridges.
Nobody shaves in Portland these days... especially the women.
We won't presume to tell folks what to do with their bodies; HOWEVER, if they want to shave, we happen to think straight razors are the best tool to get the job done!
