Climbing Ben Nevis in Winter

  • This has been an unforgettable 10-hour experience and a massive challenge but a success to remember! We wild-camped a day before near our starting point Ben Nevis Visitor Centre and set off at 8am the next morning following the Mountain Path on 28/12/2022. I anticipated that we would have summited by 12pm and be on our return descent by afternoon, but we were an hour behind the summit window and could only reach the summit at around 1pm. Weather turned against us heavily right at summit at midday and we caught the storm. All members of our team descended down to base successfully.
    📍 Ben Nevis, Fort William
    Route: Out & Back
    Length: 10.8 miles
    Elevation Ascent: 1572m
    Date: 28/12/2022

    I'm glad you got down successfully. You had bad weather conditions. This was really a big challenge!! A great adventure. Great shot. 😊

    Very nice video, I am thinking of doing a winter climb of Ben Nevis to celebrate my 60th birthday next winter. Not sure if I am fit enough for it in winter time though.
    I see your channel is new, and have subscribed to you 👍

    I did it this morning at 6am. Got complete snow blindness with the thick fog. About 4 metres visibility.
    So grateful for the phone OS maps as paper ones are useless when you cant see if thing.

      Which app is best to use from preventing going off tracks? Climbing in 30 to this month. First time. First mountain!

    Great video and well done you all. I’ve ever got up Ben Nevis in summer and it’s been fabulous every time. If the weather is a bit tricky I’m always worried about the down bearing and avoiding 5 Fingers gully. Doing it in those conditions would be tough for me.

      That’s great Michael! Ben Nevis never disappoints, I’ve got huge respect for it. That’s exactly what the trickiest part was for us as well because last 0.8 mile ascent goes full white out, I locked the grid bearing on my Garmin after last zigzag turn, was the only way.

    I suppose the question is….. Why? It’s winter, poor visability and very dangerous.

      We spend alot of time before hand looking at weather, conditions and avalanche reports. Doesn't show it in the video but help others who are not well equipped and put a huge amount of prep before hand, check on each other to make sure the group is good and had professional training.

      I think the question is more ....why not? That's how you view it through your eyes and limitations and experience that's only a question for you?! not for everyone.. our view is it's exciting.. fun ..interesting extreme we are all equipped with the correct gear and information before hand and experience And all train for trips like these! And what a trip it was and memories created!

    You mean you walked up Ben Nevis? On the walking route… the only thing you are climbing is altitude, and that’s metaphoric 😂

      imagine gatekeeping words so that you can feel better about yourself... climbing has two definitions, one of which is to ascend a slope or staircase. we are all on this big blue ball winging it together, let people enjoy their achievement

      Really mate, does it matter what expressions anyone uses? I was on that walk/climb/crawl or what ever terminology helps ya feel hardcore! It was wicked trip and a couple of those lads on there have been to Nepal and doing mont blanc and it was one of the best trips to date!

      @Astalyx Рік тому

      @@dancastle5243 yeah actually it does, why do you think I was on UA-cam? I love watching other people Climb, if I wanted to watch people walk I’d have searched, ‘People walking up Ben Nevis’ and climbing Ben Nevis is hardcore, when we finally do it I’ll let you know how hardcore it is out of 10

      @AlexTunstall Рік тому +1

      @@Astalyx ah, there it is, the gatekeeping. Hasn't even done the walking route but thinks they'd manage the climbing routes 🙄 if you were such an expert in the mountaineering world, you'd know that a broad "Ben Nevis climb" search isn't what you type. You search the specific route name you want to see... just chill out dude and accept you were wrong, we won't hold it against you. The mountains are where we celebrate one another's achievements and accomplishments.. maybe try that instead

    Funny to see a group of Englishes with ice axes and crampons as if they climb mountains regularly in London 🤣 Still , better than the usual trainers and tesco bag.
