It is different for me, with a two masted junk rig. I raise the foresail about half way up, and the ship then wants to turn downwind, I weigh anchor then run back to the cockpit to steer out of the anchorage. An important consideration that some people might not think about if they haven't lived without an engine, is planning your anchorage and position in the anchorage so that entering and leaving is safe in the prevailing winds. But things can still be tricky if someone anchors downwind of me, especially single handed as I have to get the ship under control in a short space of time after weighing anchor.
Thanks a lot, all your videos help me to improve my english too 😉.
Thank you for the explanation. Great work!!! I'm planning on finally getting the hang singlehanding this summer, out in the San Juan Islands in the PNW 😁 your videos play an important role!
Another advantage to having a small boat when single handed sailing. I doubt you would have been able to handle a main sail like that on a bigger boat! And yes, washing your hands. Very important! It doesn't seem that long ago that you were still sailing in the Carribean! I guess you're still in the Phillipines at the moment. I didn't realise the Clipper race was going up that way.
Another great video as always! You appear to have your anchor connector on the wrong way around. I have a similar one fitted to my anchor (osculati I think is the brand) they have that funny shape for a good reason; If you swap it so that the swivel is on the chain end, then it will flip over the right way up as it comes up over the bow roller, so no need for leaning out over the bow! Hope you're well! Fair winds and greetings from the UK 👍
Hello. At 6:39 I can see the anchor to chain connecting. If rotating part of connector will be at chain side the anchor will be selfrotating to correct position.
Hi Hugo, fantastic video! I'm trying to improve my sailing skills and sailing on/off anchorages is important for me (you never know when you're engine will fail!). I guess you won't be doing anymore of these but great anyway. Merci :)
Be blessed brother living the dream got the bus now I've shopped for another sail boat(had one years ago I wasn't ready to live the seas now I am) ready so from Puget sound and the Washington State to you I bid you safe passage I look up to you and are a big inspiration thank you !🌬️💨⛵🤙 PS my engine breaking one summer force me into sailing and docking without a engine(2x in very choppy conditions😵) single handed 7 x and my sail skills raised exponentially along with my nerves... I Busted couple items ... But you make it look way to easy but it honestly wish it would have been trained by I still could use training
This feeling when wind kicks in and you just feel the power in all of the boat is unmatched. I'm always happy when I see a new upload because you are able to send me some true sailing, thank you By the way, I don't think the percentage of non boat geeks watching your videos is very high though
Will do :D. Got my boat back in The water a couple of days ago and had my first real sail for this season today :D Tyvm for the link, Will check that out.
as an aside, could a drone in follow me mode make pathfinding shallows easier, Ive asked others too in addition: If the drone was teathered to the top of the mast with a power feed (the same height as mast). Duration and recovery are sorted, Set drone proximity and use realtime footage to give another set of eyes. Using off the shelf drone with a fly lead connection. Some fishing line and a spare masthead pulley. Could it be of use? cons: another flapping halyard to contend with. another wifi device, I'll forward other channels replies soon. J
Why not reef the main before heading upwind? And what is your tiller is doing while you try to steer the main manually and while dropping anchor? Great video, thogh.
You only need to reef if you are overpowered, which in that video wasn;t the case. When you are dropping anchor, the boat barely moves, so you can do the tiller do it's thing
This are the best sailing videos by far. Love the single handed adventures.
Fantastic! More How-To, or "boat geek" episodes, si vous plait!
Here you go then :) >> ua-cam.com/video/6klV_y-pAXM/v-deo.html
Thank you for making such a clear and uncomplicated video 👍 great to see how other sailors cope whilst solo. Keep up the good work.
Thanks a lot, here is a new one: ua-cam.com/video/6klV_y-pAXM/v-deo.html
So cool to see the handling of the boom towards the end.. it's as if he's windsurfing.
I like very much the parts, where you explain your tacticts to get in and out of anchorplaces.
Trop bien tes vidéos en solo ! Merci !
En voila une autre :) >> ua-cam.com/video/6klV_y-pAXM/v-deo.html
Excellent tuto. Merci. Marc
I love your energy and how you explain things. Very good job. Thanks for making the videos.
Thank you for this. I always wondered how to raise anchor and drop anchor.
very interesting tips! welcome back aboard the world of tiny boats Hugo!!
Merci Hugo.
One day i will iwn a sail boat and exactly as what you are doing. I love it and always watching you for a while now

Renovating an Alberg 30, to go south in November, possibly around cape Horn to Quebec if I make in time, by end of February.
1000 mercis.
Finally I find ONE guy that can really sail on utube. In school we had no engine all we did was sail everywhere too. I think it is better this way.

Really useful tips, thank you for sharing :D Gets the confidence going!
(btw, our boats look quite alike, Arabesque 26)
Great, thank you so much, are you back from your racing work now? Thought you sold the boat.

Bravo!

It would be interesting to see what the old Naval base and Olongapo are like now compared to when I was in the Navy in the 70's

Good stuff
That's the way I usually drop and hoist the anchor with my 30 ft boot even that I have an engine. It's easy and safe in most cases.
Fair winds!

I'm always happy when I see a new upload because you are able to send me some true sailing, thank you

Perfect 😀👍
I wish you would 1) also show us how to dock at a berth by sail only. AND 2) how to get through a canal by sail only.
What I really want to know is how you drop your sail so neatly?
Love this😍 learned something too😎
Very nice.
Sail without engine is an goal i have, i use less and less engine but i'm very new to sailing so i have a long way to go still :D
Go for it! Practice is key >> ua-cam.com/video/6klV_y-pAXM/v-deo.html
Will do :D. Got my boat back in The water a couple of days ago and had my first real sail for this season today :D

awesome video. shame cant meet you in china stop this year. you still stay in asia or back france/
Back to France soon, but China next winter

Thanks for posting some older stuff. How are COVID-19 conditions where you are with the Clipper boats?
Hell yeah!
Hugo for such a small yacht she can hold her own when the conditions are right.
Yeah probably, but it's good practice to always make sure you have a good holding, especially if you get a squall overnight
Nice tiller! Do you know the maker?
A friend of mine in the pyrenees :)
Good Idea by posting a tutorial !
Thanks! Here is anothe one: ua-cam.com/video/6klV_y-pAXM/v-deo.html
why didnt you get a wind vane steering system?
How deep was the water at the anchorage, and how much rode did you put out?
About 4m deep, always put 3:1 ratio for daystop, 4:1 to 5:1 ratio for overnight, and more if strong winds are expected
I noticed in a lot of your videos you use the autopilot. Do you own a windvane steering system? Have you ever used one?
I don't have one, I have used them, it's awesome, but on a really small boat it uses all the space on the transom...
