This is actually really well explained... I've been watching several of these "kingdom management" videos to try to get my head around the mechanics (as a new player) - you wouldn't believe how many videos of people there are of posters just humming while they click random shit without actually remembering to talk to their viewers. At least you explain things well (as far as I can tell!). So thanks! Also - do you still play this game? Have you tried it in turn based mode which I believe is 'new'? I'm lovng it so far, but like I say a lot of mechanics are a bit glossed over by the tutorial sadly and I'm having to learn for myself. Ugh.
It has been a while since I played the game. I ended up putting so many hours in during pre-release that I kinda ruined it for myself :D Generally I'd say kingdom management is not worth getting into unless that's your main reason for playing the game. You don't miss out on a lot by turning it off.
other than the bare minimum to house artisans (or teleporters once you have them), it is best to avoid building anything until about act 4; everything should be spent on ranking up and emergency expenses, getting the trade deals very early and such
I just had Act 3 begin, and am completely broke..I only have 3 terriroties (full of buildings) and my advisors almost all rank 3. I am thinking I may be in trouble😂
Idk that my towns are optimal, but the first things I always build are walls, a long house (preferably in a center square as many buildings get bonuses next to it) and a barracks.
Just an FYI for anyone who sees this. To upgrade your capitol to a town, you need to claim 2 regions besides your starting region/capitol. Upgrading all of your towns is toed to how many regions you own, as far as I know 1 upgrade for every 2 regions.
guessing you alternate between adventuring and heading back to the capital to handle Kingdom biz? took care of the Stag Lord a few times but end up starting over not long after.

A question on region upgrades, haven't been able to find any real info about this online. The region upgrades for south narlmarches are the bronzeshield fortress (worthless) and candlemere (useful) So how do you unlock the Candlemere upgrade. Online it says the requirement is to clear candlemere island, so did that, killed all the wisps and left the priest to guard the protal (should he be killed as well?) The fact that these requirements are not spelled out anywhere in the game is stupid (I ain't the only one that has problems with this)
At some point during the Varnhold Vanishing quest you'll get a sidequest to investigate Candlemere. If you've done that, sounds like you may have, the upgrade should show up later in the story. You don't need to kill the mage.
Obfuscating mechanics in a management game is not realistic, immersive, clever, replayability friendly or in any other way praisworthy and good design. It is plain infuriating. If you task someone with optimizing the operation of a system, but neither explain to them its workings, nor provide an opportunity to for them to discover it you have made a dull problem that can only be solved through trial and error. Or to put it into the context of 'realism', you want to reestablish the monastery on an abandoned and ghost infested island, what do you do? Kill the ghosts, send the work order, done. If any problem comes up your underlings in charge of the efdort shoud either solve it, or at least inform you. Unfortunately, the game doesnt even bother ro indicate there is even the possibility of claiming this ruin, much less enlighten you as to how you might do that. The nature of this game as a prewritten story aimply necessitates that you cant just do anything you might think up, and so the game is required to point out to you what paths it is able to allow you to pursue. Your idea only works in a game like dwarf fortress, where the systems are in place for you to in a completely emergent manner just find an abandoned temple, and decide you are going to rebuild it, so you just do so, dealing with any problems that arise as they do. Kingmaker cant do this, so it remains having to guide you.
There are a few basic tilesets for settlements. River gets you a water tile that you can build a pier on. Good, but not necessary. There's also Forest, which gives you one or two sepparate tiles where you can build things like watchtower or lumber mill. It's not necessary to build near any particular thing, but I just like having a river for roleplay reasons :)
Is there any special building that can only build in forest? Are there more different kind of tile beside water and wall tile? (such as mountain tile maybe?)
I have seen evidence that there may be a special forest shrine you could build, but haven't been able to find out exactly how. As for special tiles, so far there are normal connected tiles, sepparate tiles that are one or two apart from the others, port tiles where you can build piers, and lighthouse tiles where you can build a lighthouse.

Given how many buildings are affected by being next to a Longhouse building one in a corner is a horrifically bad idea.
