Edge and Christian were like that. They were completely goofy but would then snap when it was time to get serious.
same as Kurt Angle
@@Gravydog316 so did austin and rock
That's how a main event wrestler should be
That's life gotta have a switch to turn on and off and that edge n Christian did
They got it
this is part of the reason I was such a Kurt Angle fan. He would wear wigs, strum on a guitar like an idiot and be goofy but when the bell rang and it was time for him to wrestle; he would suplex his opponent into another universe.
"YOU'RE A BOY... IN A MAN'S WORLD... AND I'M A MAN WHO LOooOooVES TO PLAY WITH BOYS!"
Kurt was so legit no matter what silly shit he did he always stayed believable as fuck
That's because we all knew Angle actually was a proper wrestler so he could get away with goofy and then still be seen as serious afterwards
This is always the best example. Even as a kid who had no clue about actual Olympic wrestling, I knew Kurt Angle could fuck up anyone in the ring. His moves, he has that aura of a competitor since he actually is one, and especially his submissions are what made it so believable.
Best. Wrestler. Ever.
I think one of the most well-done comedy spots I've seen is when snooty British aristocrat William Regal pulls out the brass knuckles and clocks Big Show with them, only to have Big Show slowly fall onto him like an oak tree. Regal makes a "no... no... NO..." expression before he's squashed beneath Show, and struggles to escape while the referee makes the 3 count.
The sentence "... and this wasn't even the first turtle in wrestling" (16:52) is so good, in and out of context.
People are gonna hate this. Jim dropping knowledge. Again.
*morons are gonna hate this.
@@Gravydog316 hypocrites love it though. Perhaps go see the actual match..
I got into Wrestling in the 80's and prefered the NWA/WcW wrestling to WWF. NWA was a believable Fight, & Wwf was Hogan and entertainment. I was against the heels like Jim, but only years later understood how GREAT they were to get me pissed off.
I miss those days of Kayfabe..
so preferred the NWA/WCW to WWF because you were not smart enough to realize that they are just as fake and scripted as the WWF? LOLOLOLOL
We Worldwide! Oh no! How dare someone watch something for entertainment and not to expose the business and ruin the magic for themselves? Whatever shall we do?! 🥱
The cover looks like Jim is getting it from the back by a Ninja Turtle while he eats cake like baby on its 1st birthday.
That's your perception, all yours.
Creep from outer-space nah not just all his it looks exactly like that imo.
Go Ninja Go Ninja GO 😆
Holy shit that made me fucking BURST lol
Mike Noftsier LOL!!
The crowd are actively participating in something mythic when they're cheering or booing during a match. The Heels and Babyfaces represent various ideals and principles. It's emotionally powerful, which is why it's so beloved. I love the fact that Jim and Brian have these in-depth conversations - it's inspiring.
Bobby H, Jim C, and Jimmy Hart, were some of the funniest characters on tv during Saturday, so many laughs- todays WWE shows lack such comedy and I don't think we'll ever have such talent again. Sad.
Kurt Angle was hilarious, especially right after the hair vs hair match with Edge.
The new wrestlers need to watch Eddie guerro matches. He mixed humor with serious wrestling. He is greatly missed.
It's Guerrero. Learn to f ucking spell, especially when you're talking about a dead man.
Cowabunga the Ninja turtle v Luchasauras
That’s comedy right there
Sadly both Mark Curtis and Chris Champion are gone.
Adam Vanderpluym They will be remembered...✌🏼👊🏼
Can we get at least one podcast where Corny talks in his Dusty Rhodes impression the whole show?
I so miss Bobby Heenan's brand of comedy in wrestling.
So many salty indie neckbeards, LMAO. Cornette is right.
People defend the crazy comedy but for some reason WWE ratings and attendance are dropping tremendously. The more they focus on ENTERTAINMENT with non wrestling the more they sink
RAW has too much wrestling, the matches are often too long and repetitious from one week to the next. Wrestling is not the problem, no one watch RAW hoping they'll see the next Flair-Steamboat masterpiece.
The real problems with RAW and Smackdown are : lack of larger than life characters, the storylines are uninspired and uncreative, the championships no longer mean anything, and 95% of the roster is being wasted and serve no purpose whatsoever (in comparison, everyone during the Attitude era served a purpose or had a feud to work on). Forget the wrestling part of it, these are the real issues.
@@jonathanturbide2232 Raw has to much wrestling? get the fuck out of here. WWE television is a TV show that features wrestling other than that its a tv show not a wrestling show. there is not to much wrestling on RAW. your on crack
Context, context, context.
@@TheSPEEZY99 Dude, my point is that the matches all look and feel the same from one week to the other. You can tell which one will last through 1 or 2 commercial breaks, all the matches follow the same patterns week after week, a lot of them are too long, all the tag matches are the same....so yes, under these circumstances there's too much actual wrestling. Compare these boring bland RAW to shows in the 80's, when WWF and Jim Crockett Promotions were peaking (86 and 87) - both their flagship shows were made of short squash matches, and a lot of time was given to promos and to selling feuds and angles. Same formula for the attitude era; very short matches, lot of time given to developing feuds, the long matches were on ppv. These shows were built to keep the viewer's attention, and to sell tickets. RAW has way too much boring bland matches every week, I'd shorten everything to allow more wrestlers to talk and to build something (character, feud, etc).
@@TheSPEEZY99 I have to disagree with you. Because WWE can put on clinics of pro wrestling matches on Raw and SmackDown. The problem is the stories are lacking, segments mean nothing. The talent have no personality or character.
Kowabunga would be over AF on today's indy scene, he'd be moving more merch than the Medellin cartel.
Along with all the poor man's Doinks.
When I hear Cornette talk about some angle I usually go look it up on UA-cam like when he got his face smashed in the cake.
VKM: Let me tell you about my first homosexual experience.
Cornette: Let me tell you about my first cake experience.
Learn em up Jim!
Foolishness is very different to Comedy and Humor
“This wasn’t even the first turtle in wrestling.”
Step 1) Do the opposite of Vince's idea of comedy.
DANCE BREAK!!!
Tell me he didn't just say that
One of my favorites was in 1981, in Georgia, when the Freebirds split up, and Michael Hayes was feuding with Terry Gordy, and was calling Gordy "Baby Huey." Terry Gordy is with Gordon Solie bitching about it, when Michael Hayes and Kevin Von Erich come out and put a bib and baby bonnet on Bam Bam! And Gordy was so humiliated, he couldn't wait to get his hands on either of them!
According to Flair, they did the sandpaper treatment to Steamboat before Flair's suit was torn up.
I do like the Midnight Express but Bobby Eaton with Arn Anderson was a great tag team . Something about Eaton made him the perfect tag partner .
Imagine a “Ricky Flair”
Ramblin' Ricky Rhodes
Imagine a Richard Henry Blood working as "Ricky Steamboat".
Oh wait, that actually happened...
I hated Bobby Heenan but I always wanted to see him the next time. See him get his comeuppance and hear his next comment.
That's why wrestling is entertaining. It has violence, drama, comedy, competition (sort of), music, etc. it's cool
Corny, the funniest line ever in wrestling is when you told Gordon Solie "Bob Armstrong's brain is so small that if you stuck it in a fleas butt, it would rattle around like a bb in a rain barrel". You'll never know how many times I stole your line over the years.
Wow that’s a good one!
Don’t like comedy and hate the kick out of every damn finishing moves
Reby Hardy brought me here. Love me some Cornette
I am still baffled that there are people listening to Cornette's podcast who take him so utterly seriously that they complain about his opinions every week. x'D
I guess idiots are always looking for ways to get offended
John Gally From the safety of your computer monitor, of course.
People looking for confirmation bias, get upset when their opinions aren’t shared
@@bunkaiking I'm not annoyed. Just confused. What makes you feel so strongly in his direction in particular? Many people talk shit.
Because people are baffled at how serious Jim seems to take wrestling.
David Schultz was unintentionally hilarious.
I love Jim's quotes.
RIP Chris Champion
Jim and brian, keep up the great work!!!👍
It was Harley Race that suggested and sandpapered the skin off Ricky Steamboat
It was Gene Anderson who did the sandpapering. Ole was the booker at the time.
I accept comedy in Wrestling when they're able to turn it off and get serious when they wrestle. Kurt Angle and Matt riddle for example
0:18
Ah, you just wanna see headlocks for an hour!
Jim describes it brilliantly
People think that Cornette is a hypocrite because of the Turtle fight.
However, there is a difference between silly and realistic and silly and unrealistic. A fully trained fighter in a turtle suit whilst silly would still be able to beat a non-wrestler. If Mike Tyson in his prime wore a turtle suit he'd still be one of the best fighters in the world and beat the shit out of most people and certainly would be able to beat a non-trained fighter. However, the stuff that the people in AEW are doing isn't just silly it's unrealistic. In real life, silly things can happen but if it's unrealistic then it's just stupid.
In my opinion, coming from an MMA background, Comedy in wrestling should be something that seems accidental and objectively funny. But, doesn't take away from the experience has a whole. Imagine your playing a GTA like video game and suddenly you merge into oncoming traffic. Instead of hitting a car and dying in a fiery explosion, what if you just pinged off into outer space. That is something that could be subjectively funny but wouldn't take away from the game as a whole. Comedy should be like that. My favorite comedy spot in pro wrestling is when someone goes to give a kick and the guy taking the move covers his face. Therefore, the guy giving the kick aims for the midsection or legs. The taker, after getting kicked in the gut or leg lets out a guttural, "UH!", "OOF!" or even, "OWIE!" Then, while the taker is bent over or on his knees, the giver kicks the guy right in the fucking face and throws the giver out of the ring. I have seen heels turn pink because they were so mad at that humiliating maneuver. That's just my opinion on comedy in wrestling. Feel free to call me a zoomer.
It sounds like the people that are using the turtle as a counterargument think that Jim is saying there should no comedy gimmicks allowed. If he were saying that, then the turtle would be a fair counterargument. Good to know he’s not saying that. Wrestling needs its occasional silly/colourful gimmicks.
Its a shame wwe wont hire corny to train guys at the pc on how to make promos on their own
thats why they have been dead for 10+ years
@@Gravydog316 its one of many reasons why wwe sucks and as you said sucked for a while now. They have guys who can give good even great promos but its so scripted you cant believe or feel anything in what they say no matter how well or not they deliver it. We never see a whole arena (or whole audience in wwes case now as theyre not even filling arenas) in anyones palm like stone cold, the rock, taker, foley to name a few all were allowed to do
Say what you want about Jim, he knows his stuff.
hahahahaha, when Corney drops those side comments "Fuck you Chuck Taylor....Kentucky......hes gotta be from southern Indiana"
Ricky Flair
That's my favourite Turtle behind Jim, there!!! 💜💟🐢
Lamen's terms: Imagine the scene in Carrie where she has pig's blood dumped on her. "They're all gonna laugh at you!!!!!!". Carrie then gets even with everyone still in the gymnasium. How hard is that, VINCE????????
😂 I love the thumbnails
So Jim wrestling a turtle has be in the same category as Kenny Omega wrestling a doll
Kota ibushi wrestled the doll. Kenny omega wrestled a 9 year-old.
No because Jim never wrestled a turtle, he wrestled a man dressed as a turtle, a man dressed as a turtle can punch you, a trained fighter dressed as a turtle can beat a non-trained fighter, however, a 9 year old girl can't really go the distance with a fully trained fighter and a doll can't really hit back.
Jim was not a wrestler.
Jim, a heel chicken shit manager vs an actual wrestler in a ninja turtle outfit is not a "serious" wrestler being competitive with a nine year old girl
I think you missed the part, where, inside the turtle costume, was a fully trained wrestler, who was going to fight a fat manager, who wasn’t trained as a wrestler…seriously, how is that so fucking hard to comprehend!?
But Omega exposes the business.
Variety is important in wrestling. You should present different types of matches and segments.
Jim Cornette: "EXPOSING TEH BIZNESS!! EXPOSING TEH BIZNESS!!11 EXPOSING TEH BIZNESS!!1"
Also Jim Cornette: "I wrestled a Ninja Turtle"
The comedy has to come from outside the actual wrestling. Otherwise, the product is diminished because of the lack of consequence from the match and there's no real conflict regarding the wrestlers.
I disagree you can make comedy in the wrestling you just have to make sure that it makes sense one of my favourite comedy spots is heath skater in royal rumble 2018 where everyone kept beating him up on the outside before he entered but didn't bother to get him in because he was not being considered as a threat then sheamus comes in gets him in because he is an ahole and ends up being eliminated instantly by heath great built up and a good punchline while using basically only wrestling
@@ariklion37 What I meant was that the actual wrestling had to seem somewhat realistic. The spot you described worked because the attacks were still meant to be painful.
I was talking about throwing people with the power of your dick or making someone stop moving by hitting the start button on his video game controller costume.
The problem these days is that heels aren’t allowed to get the kind of nuclear heat that Corny thrived in.
Back then the fans wanted to see the baby face cancel the heel. These days the fans would cancel the promoter and the writers.
Mid 80’s WWF, Nicholi Volkov would get heat by singing the Soviet national anthem before his matches.
These days, or especially right after the September 11th 2001 attacks, you couldn’t draw heat by having the Iron Shiek come out with a prayer rug and pray to Allah before a match? But it never happened. Why? Because the promoter, not the heel, would get the heat.
I think you just need to look at it from outside of wrestling. Think of movies. There are several amazing drama, horror and action films that have some comedy in them. But they don't outright turn into an Airplane style farce. They still maintain the correct mood even with some funny moments. Wrestling is the same way. There are funny bits that work well in the context of something that isn't a comedy and funny bits that are so outlandish that they only work in a full-on comedy. The hand grenade bit is too outlandish and will only work in a full-on comedy, like if you had a sitcom or a movie parody about wrestling. In the context of a wrestling program that wishes to have stuff that's played straight it derails the whole show.
Jim got how it worked. Now it's just, look at us, we're being idiots.
He's a hypocrite.
I'm 22 years old and I completely agree with everything Jim is saying here. A legless man wrestling is stupid. Wrestling a blowup doll is stupid and unforgivable. So is wrestling a 9-year-old girl. Many of these outlaw shows are all comedy and no wrestling. If you want comedy, don't call yourself a wrestling promotion. It is an insult to everyone you idolize. I can promise you that if the Undertaker saw any of the all comedy bullshit that we get with these bullshit promotions, he would jump the rail, beat everyone senseless, and then walk away smiling. He would then proceed to find the person who runs the company and beat him half to death as well. This is also one of the many reasons Vince needs to either die or step down. As long as he runs the place, it will be a collection of childish, bad comedy bullshit. He is an old, senile child who has lost touch with reality. The only positive thing I can say about him is that he is not as bad as Vince Russo. At least he has that going for him.
Brandi lord Taker didn't treat the gimmick as comedy. Anyone who watched back then didn't think it was comedy either. He sure as hell wasn't booked as a comedy wrestler. If anyone else had that gimmick, it probably wouldn't have worked and would have been nothing but comedy. Taker's size and acting skills turned that from comedy into Vince's greatest human creation. In fact, he took the business so seriously that he threatened to beat up HBK if he didn't do his job. Taker is also trained in fighting which made him even more of a badass. I'm pretty sure that people like Stone Cold wouldn't really like all of that bad comedy bullshit either.
Pop goes the weasel cause the weasel goes pop!
Comedy in wrestling is the same as comedy in general, it only works if someone is suffering. If everyone is in on the joke then the joke isn't funny, the joke is only funny when the joke is at the expense of someone or something. Jim is spot on when it comes to this stuff, comedy in wrestling is fine but you shouldn't have goofy shit for the sake of having goofy shit. There should only be comedy in wrestling if the comedy has a purpose.
Razor ramon vs the kid in a cry baby match razor won and the kid lost and not only was the kid put in a pamper he also was giving a baby bottle
From what I've watched of the territory days, the first few matches were completely one sided.
Is Cake Angle related to Kurt?
yes.
Bobby the brain was a funny on commentary
LMAO Ima teach this turtle a lesson
To me when I was younger, a lot of the entertainment value was from the funny commentary from Heenan, Ventura, etc. Now the announcing is so boring and straight and devoid of personality, it just highlights that the action in the ring isn't worth watching either.
Hilarious.
Jim knows his comedy alright...
Insert Ethiopian punchline anywhere
I think comedy in wrestling is ok like a wrestlers doing one liners and the timing is the key but having a segment of the show where you just do stupid shit is killing the business end of like today’s wwe
i'm wondering when someone is going to take a facial in a wrestling match, you know because that would be funny
i want to type something dirty here, but won't
316, gravydog....don't type something dirty, type something gross, filthy and vomit inducing
Dean Ambrose slimed Seth Rollins was funny
That was amazingly funny! Because practically no one expected that when Seth Rollins opened the MITB case. So just the pure comedy of the moment made it work so well.B.W.
So basically what i learned from this is that humiliation is the only thing Jim finds funny
No, what Jim is saying is that Humiliation works because it makes sense. And if people believe the product and hate the heels the way they are supposed too be hated then when they finally get humiliated then it's funny it should always work and it still does till this day WWE and many other companies have done this even NJPW today does this. Humiliation is the perfect way to do comedy in pro wrestling without having to destroy credibility and being able to keep continuity.
I understand his point... but a guy like Orange Cassidy draws. And if you actually watch his matches past the “lazy gimmick”, the guy can work his ass off.
the AEW faithful will buy those 23K tickets just to stick it to Jim and "the fed"
What do you have against Jim?
@@BeyondDaX i never said I had anything again Jim. I think he's great. But there are "fans" who will buy tickets out of spite, eve if they don't show up to the show.
thumbnail is a tribute to the Toxic Turtles? 😂
The cake and baby diaper & bottle angles were so fake and embarrassing. The fact he defends this stuff..... Go watch it. He is looking with rose colored glasses. Those angles were as cringe as any angle youve ever seen.
There is one with Razor and 123 Kidd cornette booked in WWF. It's abysmal.
Cornette would talk a ton of shit about their booking, then they would do stuff he wanted to do and watch it not get over to shut him up.
You gotta give it to cornette though. He makes all his shit sound really great. Its until you watch it that you realize why most of it wont work today
They were supposed to be embarrassing because Cornette got so much heat that they want to see him be humbled. However the match from 1996 was cringe. Sure the 123 Kid turned heel on Razor Ramon but it was hard to hate the 123 Kid the way the fans hated Cornette or Heenan.
Why not WWE superstars play crazy pranks on Vince McMahon?
In fairness to AEW, no one is selling Orange Cassidy's gimmick! This is what he's known for outside of AEW but they aren't putting over his soft kicks! I don't know what they have planned for Cassidy but I trust it will be awesome once it happens!
Getting back to the premise of the video, Cornette is basically explaining the differences between the Pre WWE era and the Post WWE era! Vince and WWE dumped Kayfabe and made it easier for lesser wrestlers and companies to ridicule what happens inside of the ring!
Still, why can't a wrestling show have variety?
I don't see the problem with doing comedy characters on the lower midcarder level as long it's funny.
It's not like the comedy is the main event of the show it just adds a bit of variety to the show.
most of the current
WWE ROSTER
can't really wrestle
they're
SPORTS ENTERTAINERS
the only real
WRESTLERS
to name a few
KURT ANGLE
BROCK LESNAR
UNDERTAKER
KANE
BIG SHOW
JOHN CENA
There are a few others I'd argue. Daniel Bryan among them
Brock Lesnar? LOL
The undertaker? Yeah, he could wrestle like a decade ago. Now he's old, out of shape and can barely move.
Kane? That dude always uses his knees whenever he has to take a bump
Wrestling is dead
Josh Barnets bloodsport, WWE is dead.
if kenny omega and gargano work on their facials they will undoubtetly be considered among the best wrestlers on the planet. can't wait for this to happen and jim to praise them
The Kowabunga turtle was worst than anything AEW has ever done..... and yes Memphis wrestling had some boring matches Jim Cornette.
When Jim said he was the funniest man in wrestling at one point, I skipped the rest. Jim is smoking crack...
Then who is the funniest?
@@BeyondDaX I'd personally vote for Heanan, but I can see people making a case for Jim.
Unless he means post 2015.
???
Cornette was voted like best on promos in the observer awards in like 89
Comedy in wrestling is bad, unless Its from my era, then it's fine.
Cornette is so out of touch is ridiculous. Watch him book an indy show today without his mates. He'd struggle to sell 200 tickets.
Corny is incapable of processing what 'meta' or 'meta irony' entails, which is basically a one-word explanation of the blowup dolls and all the other 'weird' shit that blows his mind. But then again he's a 70 year old geezer, so it's understandable.
Joey G They’d also ask the exact same question if they caught you watching two fat men try to strip each other too their underwear, yet people who talk about the blowup doll seem to give Corny a pass on taking part in the latter.
@Joey G He is probably the typical Generation Z moron who loves at 5 year old memes thinking they are clever. It's obvious.
