I went through all of this in the 1990s. Finding a recruiter who will work with any officer candidate, both OCS or WOFT, is very challenging. My recommendation is to have your letters of recommendation in hand, your transcripts and your essay completed. When you walk into a recruiting office you can show the recruiter that you've done the basics. Already be studying for the SIFT (in my time it as the AFAST) and let him or her know that you've been preparing. Recruiters get extra points for successfully submitting a WOFT or OCS candidate, so it can be attractive for those who believe in you. Just make it as easy on them as you can. In my case, the Captain from the local recruiting district came up and had a mock selection board with me, gave me pointers about how to sit and address the board, etc. I already had a college degree at the time so one thing I learned is that if you have some college experience that can be a bonus for selection.

I'm in several flying groups and a lot applicants for OTS post that the recruiters ghost them for months after they get all of their paperwork ready. My understanding is that there's only one officer recruiter per region and a lot of candidates come to them. Honestly I've found that the Navy and Marine Corps probably do it the best, they both have dedicated officer recruiting offices (usually near major universities) and their sole purpose is to work with officer candidate applicants. The Navy has generally been putting officer candidates into OCS from the street on a fairly regular basis, some aren't even waiting very long for selection. The Army is a bigger service with more needs, I wish they'd do something similar.

Never had a real job, only took college classes online because family too poor to afford a car so I can drive to class/work. This sounds like a situation for privileged white people. I was a high school to flight school guy. I was accepted in 1989, I was an Embry-Riddle college grad. The only differences that I have noted from then to now is, the reason why you want to become a Warrant letter was handwritten and in cursive. The other was your MOS going to Army basic was 09W.Addationally in my day you were a candidate for a full year with very little privileges, we all lived on Rucker in the barracks including the married WOC's, you could move off Rucker until you were a Junior WOC and after submitting a Memorandum of why you needed to move off post. I retired from the Army as a Master Aviator rated in the UH-1H, UH-60A/L/M.IP/SP/MP/ME. Des appointed ME, 26 years of Warrant service and over 7,500 hrs in the Hawk. I retired from the Army at Redstone Arsenal working for the PM of UHPO. If most of don't know what office it is who really runs the aviation programs (PEO Aviation), AMCOM is nothing more than a used parts outlet.

I went the high school to flight school route myself in 1979 (yes I knew the Wright brothers) and it served me well. i completed my degree through Embry Riddle while on active duty and as my initial contract with the Army ended I let the USAF spend a couple million dollars training me to to go warp snot with my hair on fire in fast movers! All in all, a life changing run and an unbelievable experience. the Warrant Officer route was awesome but I see that it has changed dramatically since 1979. My advice is check out both tracks and see which works best for you. Most importantly always remember.......................If you ain't a SCOUT PILOT you ain't s**t !!!!!!!!!

Enjoyed your video very much. Brought back lots of memories. I was drafted during the Vietnam era…1967. During Basic Training we were offered opportunities to sign up for various branches. I signed up for the WOFT program. Our version of the SIFT was called the FAST. That and passing a Class I flight physical was all it took. There was no need to get a letter of recommendation or any other qualifiers. So off to flight training I went…to Ft Wolters, TX for primary in the TH-55, then to Hunter AAF for advanced training, all in the Huey. In those days classes were split…some went to Hunter, the other half to Rucker. After graduating I was selected to go to Cobra school. Flew Cobras in Vietnam, became a Cobra IP back at Hunter. Took a direct commission and eventually retired as an LTC, AVN Branch.
I saw this first hand when I was stationed in Korea. The Warrant Officers had titles like IP, SIP, and safety. Commissioned officers had to perform leadership duties like XO, CO, S-1, S-2, etc. Flying seemed secondary.

Although I will say the commissioned route was great for me, but it takes a lot of effort to be an effective unit manager and proficient pilot at the same time as I’m sure you are aware. In 1985, the selection test was called a FAST test (flight aptitude selection test). the max score was 140, I got a 120 and still did not get picked up, My GT Score was 123. I was an active-duty Military Policeman. I was a Sargeant as well. So, I guess it's changed. I really wanted to go but it was not my destiny. I ended up as a Federal Investigator GS-1811 and retired as a GS-13. After 9/11 I did mostly Counter Terrorism work. I was HSI. Also, the guy forgot to tell you about WOC-D which really sucked. I was super bummed because I tested so high and all that was holding me back was a medical condition. Thank you for asking for an update though! @@rehamtommi2280 Absolutely, no gatekeeping here. For the SIFT, I took a different approach, but for the ASVAB: GrammarHero on UA-cam, there are so many helpful videos. I don't sponsor him, but he has a website with practice ASVAB tests and questions. On top of all of that, it's all free! I also used the famous purple Kaplan ASVAB book and referred to the "ASVAB for Dummies" book. Setting aside a couple hours a day for a month and a half got me that score. Remember to take breaks between studying and using blue light glasses! I hope this helps, and best of luck to you out there! :)

Excellent video. Wish something like this had been available in ‘77. 😅 Amazed how many similarities still exist. I had dropped out of the UofA in my junior yr. Went to the Swan St Recruiting office. After telling them I wanted flight school they took a few moments to collect themselves before they got down to business. After I got all the requirements and paperwork met I had to wait because all 6 slots for Az had been filled. Did my flight physical at DM and the flight surgeon asked if I was heading to the Air Force Academy. He seemed perplexed that I was going to Rucker. 😮 I made the cut for the next year but no deferred entry until a school date. I lost a year before a date was finally given. Only got 6 mo deferred. Hit basic at almost the perfect time of year, Sept at Ft Dicks NJ. The heat was subsiding and got out of there before the snow. In-processed at mutha’ Rucker and put a yellow hat on. First assignment was the 3ID in Deutschland in Oct ‘80 flying Hueybagos. Short stint in OH58A but did the rest of my career in Hueys. High point was Medevac for a tour. Also Desert Storm. Sadly only 16 yrs, was a victim of the Klinton drawdown in ‘95 and early retired. Now I just tell “there I was stories.” 😁

@@TheToradora97 so my journey has been incredibly frustrating. I did all the requirements for my flight physical, went to MEPS, the whole thing. On the first flight physical, the nurse ordered an xray for my back. Did that, they said I had kyphosis and I would have to wait a year to do another one. So here I am, doing all the requirements all over again. My recruiter has never done a Street to Seat before so he isn’t helpful at all. Doing it pretty much on my own. There is a TON of paperwork for the package. Your recommendation letters need to be from people like SQ CC and equivalent if possible. From what i saw, most candidates selected have a SIFT score of 60 or higher and almost all have a Bachelor’s Degree. I’ve learned a lot about this whole process over the last year so if you have any questions I’ll definitely tell you what I know!
Good informative video. I would say as a current naval aviator you made the right choice being commissioned over warrant. I’d take 0-1 over W-1 anyday…especially if you plan on making a career out if it. Both fields are very rewarding though.
I went the opposite route…since I didn’t have a degree at the time, and was drafted, the WO route was my only option. Later I applied for and was accepted as a commissioned officer. The Army is different, though. Army commissioned officers find that their hours in the cockpit become limited. Our WOs are the backbone of Army Aviation. As commissioned officers we spend more time in leadership roles, especially as we move up in rank, and less time in the cockpit. So, a senior WO will still be focused on aviating, an officer will be focused on leadership, commanding, supervision, training development and execution. I was always glad to get out and fly, but my performance was evaluated primarily on how good I did my job as officer, not so much on my flying skills. I was always jealous of Naval and Air Force aviators as they could do all those things…but hey…was always proud I had my wings working my way up to becoming a Master Army Aviator! Hooah!
Note!!! You must have a GT Score of 110 nonwaivable as well. If you don't have that I suggest if you are currently serving active duty, you should go to BSEP to up your GT Score.
Been going through this for awhile. Longest wait is the flight physical due to Rucker / Novosel being back logged, mine took about 3 months to complete. I have buddies that have been waiting for 4+ months. You need a minimum of a 110 GT score. No waivers. Pass your SIFT, you only get 2 chances EVER. I never meet anyone that has taken it more than once. If you are a NCO, make sure you have ALL your NCOERs and hopefully they are good. If you have poor NCOERs have really really strong LORs.

When I was drafted into the Army in 1968 I was given the opportunity to attend OCS, WOFT and the West Point Preparatory Academy. I would have chosen the academy but I found I would have been too old when I graduated from West Point so that was out. Chose OCS and graduated Aug 1969 class 27-69. Released from active duty as Captain in Mar 1972.
You're right about the recruiters. They just don't seem interested at all in helping with a warrant officer packet. I'm going through this dilemma now, and I'm even here at Bragg.... Army everywhere and it's still difficult.
When I joined in the late '80s I had asked the MEPs recruiter about becoming a helicopter pilot, remembering the 'Right out of high school to flight school' commercials the Army had at one time. I was told it wasn't an option. Maybe not at the time. I scored well on the ASVAB. It wouldn't be the first time a recruiter lied...
What is the tattoo policy for the program? I'm enlisted 18x currently. My hand tattoos were approved by the army when I enlisted but I'd like to know if I can apply for the pilot program.
USA Retired. In 4/1968 I was drafted. After testing and processing I was submitted to Sargents who's job was to get you to enlist, and I did so I could control my future. I was told I could be anything I wanted to be in the Army, but they only had openings for infantry, artillery, armor, and warrant officer's. 4 year commitment. Flight school required 2 tours of 'Nam, so I didn't take that, though I wanted to be a pilot. I chose SF - what a dumb ass - I had to jump out of aircraft. I won't bore you with my very interesting short career after I got into a fight with a Full Bird. I only wanted to point out that I didn't have to go thru any of the stuff they put you through today to be an officer and or a pilot. You just had to say you wanted to do it. I am 75 now and still want to be a pilot so as soon as I can pass the medical it's off to get my license. Bravo to you guys who are just going straight into flight training.
Hmmm…I was drafted in April 1967, started WOFT in July 1967. Then it was a 3-year commitment. Most of us went to Vietnam, but a select few went to Germany or S. Korea…and never made it to Vietnam.
During my senior year in college I took the written tests for Army Warrant Officer Flight Training and failed them outright. Oddly enough, I received very high scores on the AQT/FAR, the Navy's tests for pilot applicants. Go figure.

If you submit and you don't get selected the first time, you get an automatic second look. If you don't get selected on your 2nd look then you are deemed Non-competitive Non-select and you'll wait a full year from the time your DA61 was signed. So don't be discouraged if you don't get selected on your first go. Talk to a recruiter and update your board file for your second look.
Does the process change at all when my contract is up? Worried that since I have a year left, it's 50/50 that I get selected and if I don't, would have to apply for civilian WOFT program? Only thing I can think of is having to re-up to keep trying at it.

It’s the same entry process. Once selected the Army will decide which track you’ll pursue. You might be able to express a preference, but the Army will decide. Very, very few go to FW training. I’d recommend staying in RW because of greater opportunities and assignments…work on FW on your own time. It’s all good!
It's like dragonpilot said. Everyone going to Army flight school goes through and becomes rotary wing rated. Upon graduation, there is an opportunity to attend fixed wing training. It would most likely be the C-12 (military version of the KingAir, I believe) that the Army primary operates, although there are some others. Other transitions would include the Chinook, Apache, etc. Sometime around graduation, I think you could put in a dream sheet, but very few get fixed wing. Around 1 or so each graduating class, although you could always be selected later in your career. Needs of the Army and, of course, who you know. Sometimes, it's just pure luck and timing. Most of my friends who went fixed wing though said they missed flying rotary.

Yes absolutely, just look up the requirements, like getting a flight physical, call a flight department at a military hospital and schedule it. SIFT, call a ROTC program and go take it there ect.. you don’t need a recruiter.

Hey Damion your videos have been super helpful and informative. I am going a route similar to yours. ROTC to a National guard Aviation unit in Colorado. Do you have any information on commissioned officers transitioning to warrant officer? Is that something that happens? How hard is the process?
It's all the same process, however, fixed wing is not guaranteed. After you complete the initial flight training in UH-72, your class will have a selection day. Every class is different. There were no available slots for fixed wing when my class selected.
Thus was literally so helpful. Warrant officer helo pilot is what I've been looking into. You mentioned the street to seat option or from already enlisted members but I left the navy, I'm civilian now, what are the chances of me getting in? My re entry code require a waiver.

If you are branched as an Aviation Officer there is a Milper message released every year outlining the process. As a non-Aviation Officer there is not time limit. You actually need a wavier if you have over 48 months of service. You will be required to get a few more documents than a standard packet to include a branch release and resignation of Commision. All the documents can be found on the Warrant Officer recuriting website. You can only apply to the May and November boards. As for ADSO's you will have to submit a wavier when you are going through the REFRAD process through HRC after being selected.
It doesn't. The primary route is rotary wing. Everyone goes through Rotary Wing Qual. If you're lucky, you might pick up a fixed wing transition after graduation. Most of the Army fixed wing aircraft are C12's, although they do have some other types. Most of my friends who went into a fixed wing follow-on transition said that they missed flying helicopters, though.

Any prior service is fine, just watch your age, they don't always issue waivers, our Command is not keen on it. Enlisted rank is immaterial also, you don't have to be an E5 for WOFT
Both Commissioned Officers and Warrant Officers must maintain the minimum hours as pilots. Officer Evaluation Reports never mention pilot tasks. All officers are evaluated on how well they perform additional duties and their can be many. OERs are evaluated and scored by promotion boards. For aviation warrant officers, the quicker you get tracked into instructor pilot or safety officer, the better. These Warrant Officers are not given any additional duties because their jobs do not allow the time. I was a warrant officer for 8 years on active duty. Not becoming an IP or safety officer hurt my career and I was passed over for promotion to CW3.
Absolutely not. You are, however, promoted to E-5 (Warrant Officer Candidate) upon entry to WOC School, if you are not an E-5 already. If you are E-6 or higher, you retain that grade until appointment as a W-1.
@terryheo3464 SERE-C, you get to go to Camp Slappy. I think they changed it to before flight school now, so if you wash out, they aren't sending you to flight school. If you're high school to flight school, as they call it, you probably either get reclassed to a new MOS or separated, not sure. Just don't wash out, and you won't have to find out. It was not a requirement when I went in '89, but I had gone to Jungle School in Panama, so when for a short time, they were trying to make everyone go, they didn't really bother me.

For a time, anyone who hadn't gone, had to go before attending advanced schooling, but I had Jungle Survival School under my belt, so I was waived. Much has changed over the years, but it's like anything else in the Military, you just shrug and deal with it.

In those days classes were split…some went to Hunter, the other half to Rucker. After graduating I was selected to go to Cobra school. Flew Cobras in Vietnam, became a Cobra IP back at Hunter. Took a direct commission and eventually retired as an LTC, AVN Branch.
I saw this first hand when I was stationed in Korea. The Warrant Officers had titles like IP, SIP, and safety. Commissioned officers had to perform leadership duties like XO, CO, S-1, S-2, etc. Flying seemed secondary.
Great video, I keep sending this to every person I know who wants to go Warrant. Although I will say the commissioned route was great for me, but it takes a lot of effort to be an effective unit manager and proficient pilot at the same time as I’m sure you are aware. In 1985, the selection test was called a FAST test (flight aptitude selection test). the max score was 140, I got a 120 and still did not get picked up, My GT Score was 123. I was an active-duty Military Policeman. I was a Sargeant as well. So, I guess it's changed. I really wanted to go but it was not my destiny. I ended up as a Federal Investigator GS-1811 and retired as a GS-13. After 9/11 I did mostly Counter Terrorism work. I was HSI. Also, the guy forgot to tell you about WOC-D which really sucked. I was super bummed because I tested so high and all that was holding me back was a medical condition. Thank you for asking for an update though! Currently pursing a nursing degree, which was my plan B.

@@rehamtommi2280 Absolutely, no gatekeeping here. For the SIFT, I took a different approach, but for the ASVAB: GrammarHero on UA-cam, there are so many helpful videos. I don't sponsor him, but he has a website with practice ASVAB tests and questions. On top of all of that, it's all free! I also used the famous purple Kaplan ASVAB book and referred to the "ASVAB for Dummies" book. Setting aside a couple hours a day for a month and a half got me that score. Remember to take breaks between studying and using blue light glasses! I hope this helps, and best of luck to you out there! :)

You’re not wrong about 10 years being detrimental to army aviation. The main reason I joined the army was to get into flight school and after experiencing some of the “joys” the army can give you I’m a bit nervous to commit 10 years but it’s my dream so I hope I go through with it when the time comes. Amazed how many similarities still exist.
I had dropped out of the UofA in my junior yr. Went to the Swan St Recruiting office. After telling them I wanted flight school they took a few moments to collect themselves before they got down to business.
After I got all the requirements and paperwork met I had to wait because all 6 slots for Az had been filled. Did my flight physical at DM and the flight surgeon asked if I was heading to the Air Force Academy. He seemed perplexed that I was going to Rucker. 😮
I made the cut for the next year but no deferred entry until a school date. I lost a year before a date was finally given. Only got 6 mo deferred. Hit basic at almost the perfect time of year, Sept at Ft Dicks NJ. The heat was subsiding and got out of there before the snow.
In-processed at mutha’ Rucker and put a yellow hat on. First assignment was the 3ID in Deutschland in Oct ‘80 flying Hueybagos. Short stint in OH58A but did the rest of my career in Hueys. High point was Medevac for a tour. Also Desert Storm.
Sadly only 16 yrs, was a victim of the Klinton drawdown in ‘95 and early retired. Now I just tell “there I was stories.” 😁

@@TheToradora97 so my journey has been incredibly frustrating. I did all the requirements for my flight physical, went to MEPS, the whole thing. On the first flight physical, the nurse ordered an xray for my back. Did that, they said I had kyphosis and I would have to wait a year to do another one.
So here I am, doing all the requirements all over again. My recruiter has never done a Street to Seat before so he isn’t helpful at all. Doing it pretty much on my own.
There is a TON of paperwork for the package. Your recommendation letters need to be from people like SQ CC and equivalent if possible. From what i saw, most candidates selected have a SIFT score of 60 or higher and almost all have a Bachelor’s Degree.
I’ve learned a lot about this whole process over the last year so if you have any questions I’ll definitely tell you what I know!
Good informative video. I would say as a current naval aviator you made the right choice being commissioned over warrant. I’d take 0-1 over W-1 anyday…especially if you plan on making a career out if it. Both fields are very rewarding though.
I went the opposite route…since I didn’t have a degree at the time, and was drafted, the WO route was my only option. Later I applied for and was accepted as a commissioned officer. The Army is different, though. Army commissioned officers find that their hours in the cockpit become limited. Our WOs are the backbone of Army Aviation. As commissioned officers we spend more time in leadership roles, especially as we move up in rank, and less time in the cockpit. So, a senior WO will still be focused on aviating, an officer will be focused on leadership, commanding, supervision, training development and execution. I was always glad to get out and fly, but my performance was evaluated primarily on how good I did my job as officer, not so much on my flying skills. I was always jealous of Naval and Air Force aviators as they could do all those things…but hey…was always proud I had my wings working my way up to becoming a Master Army Aviator! Hooah!

If you don't have that I suggest if you are currently serving active duty, you should go to BSEP to up your GT Score.
Been going through this for awhile. Longest wait is the flight physical due to Rucker / Novosel being back logged, mine took about 3 months to complete. I have buddies that have been waiting for 4+ months.
You need a minimum of a 110 GT score. No waivers.
Pass your SIFT, you only get 2 chances EVER. I never meet anyone that has taken it more than once.
If you are a NCO, make sure you have ALL your NCOERs and hopefully they are good. If you have poor NCOERs have really really strong LORs.

When I was drafted into the Army in 1968 I was given the opportunity to attend OCS, WOFT and the West Point Preparatory Academy. I would have chosen the academy but I found I would have been too old when I graduated from West Point so that was out. Chose OCS and graduated Aug 1969 class 27-69.
Released from active duty as Captain in Mar 1972.
You're right about the recruiters. They just don't seem interested at all in helping with a warrant officer packet. I'm going through this dilemma now, and I'm even here at Bragg.... Army everywhere and it's still difficult.

When I joined in the late '80s I had asked the MEPs recruiter about becoming a helicopter pilot, remembering the 'Right out of high school to flight school' commercials the Army had at one time. I was told it wasn't an option. Maybe not at the time. I scored well on the ASVAB. It wouldn't be the first time a recruiter lied...
Just finished 4 years active duty infantry. Getting out to join border patrol but I'll be reenlisting in the NG to fly helis.
What is the tattoo policy for the program? I'm enlisted 18x currently. My hand tattoos were approved by the army when I enlisted but I'd like to know if I can apply for the pilot program.

USA Retired. In 4/1968 I was drafted. After testing and processing I was submitted to Sargents who's job was to get you to enlist, and I did so I could control my future. I was told I could be anything I wanted to be in the Army, but they only had openings for infantry, artillery, armor, and warrant officer's. 4 year commitment. Flight school required 2 tours of 'Nam, so I didn't take that, though I wanted to be a pilot. I chose SF - what a dumb ass - I had to jump out of aircraft. I won't bore you with my very interesting short career after I got into a fight with a Full Bird. I only wanted to point out that I didn't have to go thru any of the stuff they put you through today to be an officer and or a pilot. You just had to say you wanted to do it. I am 75 now and still want to be a pilot so as soon as I can pass the medical it's off to get my license. Bravo to you guys who are just going straight into flight training.
Hmmm…I was drafted in April 1967, started WOFT in July 1967. Then it was a 3-year commitment. Most of us went to Vietnam, but a select few went to Germany or S. Korea…and never made it to Vietnam.

During my senior year in college I took the written tests for Army Warrant Officer Flight Training and failed them outright. Oddly enough, I received very high scores on the AQT/FAR, the Navy's tests for pilot applicants. Go figure.
10yrs AND unlike other WO MOS's your time in grade for CW2 plus service obligation don't start until flight school completion.

You get the flight physical prior to submitting the packet for Warrant Officer correct ? Are you able to get that flight physical ahead of time if I were to choose to go the commission route? If I want to do this through the national guard would I have to go to flight school full time? Or is there a once or twice a month program? I work full time.
If you submit and you don't get selected the first time, you get an automatic second look. If you don't get selected on your 2nd look then you are deemed Non-competitive Non-select and you'll wait a full year from the time your DA61 was signed. So don't be discouraged if you don't get selected on your first go. Talk to a recruiter and update your board file for your second look.
Does the process change at all when my contract is up? Worried that since I have a year left, it's 50/50 that I get selected and if I don't, would have to apply for civilian WOFT program?
Only thing I can think of is having to re-up to keep trying at it.

It’s the same entry process. Once selected the Army will decide which track you’ll pursue. You might be able to express a preference, but the Army will decide. Very, very few go to FW training. I’d recommend staying in RW because of greater opportunities and assignments…work on FW on your own time. It’s all good!
It's like dragonpilot said. Everyone going to Army flight school goes through and becomes rotary wing rated. Upon graduation, there is an opportunity to attend fixed wing training. It would most likely be the C-12 (military version of the KingAir, I believe) that the Army primary operates, although there are some others. Other transitions would include the Chinook, Apache, etc. Sometime around graduation, I think you could put in a dream sheet, but very few get fixed wing. Around 1 or so each graduating class, although you could always be selected later in your career. Needs of the Army and, of course, who you know. Sometimes, it's just pure luck and timing. Most of my friends who went fixed wing though said they missed flying rotary.

Yes absolutely, just look up the requirements, like getting a flight physical, call a flight department at a military hospital and schedule it. SIFT, call a ROTC program and go take it there ect.. you don’t need a recruiter.

It's all the same process, however, fixed wing is not guaranteed. After you complete the initial flight training in UH-72, your class will have a selection day. Every class is different. There were no available slots for fixed wing when my class selected.

If you are branched as an Aviation Officer there is a Milper message released every year outlining the process.
As a non-Aviation Officer there is not time limit. You actually need a wavier if you have over 48 months of service. You will be required to get a few more documents than a standard packet to include a branch release and resignation of Commision. All the documents can be found on the Warrant Officer recuriting website. You can only apply to the May and November boards.
As for ADSO's you will have to submit a wavier when you are going through the REFRAD process through HRC after being selected.

It doesn't. The primary route is rotary wing. Everyone goes through Rotary Wing Qual. If you're lucky, you might pick up a fixed wing transition after graduation. Most of the Army fixed wing aircraft are C12's, although they do have some other types. Most of my friends who went into a fixed wing follow-on transition said that they missed flying helicopters, though.

Any prior service is fine, just watch your age, they don't always issue waivers, our Command is not keen on it. Enlisted rank is immaterial also, you don't have to be an E5 for WOFT
Both Commissioned Officers and Warrant Officers must maintain the minimum hours as pilots. Officer Evaluation Reports never mention pilot tasks. All officers are evaluated on how well they perform additional duties and their can be many. OERs are evaluated and scored by promotion boards. For aviation warrant officers, the quicker you get tracked into instructor pilot or safety officer, the better. These Warrant Officers are not given any additional duties because their jobs do not allow the time. I was a warrant officer for 8 years on active duty. Not becoming an IP or safety officer hurt my career and I was passed over for promotion to CW3.

Absolutely not. You are, however, promoted to E-5 (Warrant Officer Candidate) upon entry to WOC School, if you are not an E-5 already. If you are E-6 or higher, you retain that grade until appointment as a W-1.

@terryheo3464 SERE-C, you get to go to Camp Slappy. I think they changed it to before flight school now, so if you wash out, they aren't sending you to flight school. If you're high school to flight school, as they call it, you probably either get reclassed to a new MOS or separated, not sure. Just don't wash out, and you won't have to find out. It was not a requirement when I went in '89, but I had gone to Jungle School in Panama, so when for a short time, they were trying to make everyone go, they didn't really bother me.
@terryheo3464 Sorry, I didn't get back sooner. Yes, you do. I can't speak to it as I never went, wasn't required in '89. For a time, anyone who hadn't gone, had to go before attending advanced schooling, but I had Jungle Survival School under my belt, so I was waived. Much has changed over the years, but it's like anything else in the Military, you just shrug and deal with it.
