I get so disheartened because of people like these that have replied to your comment. They do not understand that calling oneself something other than Christian is just a way to describe the doctrine that you believe in. For all of you people in the future reading this, the term Calvinist is very frequently used just to refer to the fact that someone ascribes to the doctrine of individual election. That does not mean that they ascribe to all of Calvin's doctrine. Many Calvinists, for example, are Reformed Baptists, versus Prebyterian. Both have their differences from Calvin's exact theology, and Reformed Baptist theology does not agree with paedobaptism. Please learn to listen to other people's perspectives before you make yourself a fool in the sight of your fellow brothers and sisters. This same idea is expressed in Romans 1:19-28 where those who harden their hearts by refusing the obvious existence of God refuse to acknowledge Him and turn from their sins are said to be "given over to a reprobate mind".
About God hardening Pharaoh's heart - I like to think of it as a "passive" action. For instance, suppose you put a chunk of clay and a chunk of wax outside on a hot sunny day. What happens? The sun will melt the wax, but will harden the clay. The sun was just being itself - it wasn't necessarily trying to do anything to either substance. The wax was melted because of what it is made of. Same with the clay. Pharaoh's heart becoming hard in God's presence exposes what it was made of.
That's perfect for when Pharaoh's heart was hardened passively, but verses also say that God actively hardened his heart and the Pharaoh actively hardened his own heart, so all 3 types of hardening are present in the story at different times
I have wondered about this since, at least in English, God is said "I will harden" which is future tense so the question is when did He do so. Did He do so right after having stated it? Well, we are not told that He did so until after Pharaoh did it to himself first.

Dear ASKDrBrown: Great explanation! The word of God gave me a picture of what you shared brother Mike. Relating to your beginning quote about out the sun shines on the clay and butter, making one hard and one soft. Here it is: There are two soils. The Sun of Righteous shines on both soils with the intent to soften both. On both a seed is cast. One soil rejects the seed. The other soils receives the seed within a crack or cut (circumcision). Then the sun shines on the first soil. With no rain, the already hard soil gets harder and harder until all the water has left. This soil looks like those deserts starving for water with hexagon shaped cracks. Any rain just immediately dries up under such unshaded sun. The 2nd soil has just enough water in which the seed to root. The new leaves give shade to the soil. The roots break up the soil even more. Eventually a new tree grows and drops leaves which decays as organic matter, further softening the soil. The tree invites birds of the air to come who further fertilize and soften the ground below. The tree drops fruit and seeds within to continue to increase the next generation of soil softening. The moral: God does nothing wrong when hearts are hardened. All He does is good - send the sun, the rain and seed. The soil that rejects the voice of the word of God grows hard. As it is written, "when you hear my voice, harden not your hearts"!
This is pretty good. It's consistent with what I've heard in the past. The only thing I'd add and maybe take issue with is the last hardening that is spoken of. I'm not sure what Dr. Brown is saying there but it sounds as though he's not making a distinction between the various hardenings. Only that God says He is going to "strengthen" Pharaoh's "resolve" It seems to me that the last hardening is a fulfillment of what God says in the beginning. I've heard it said, and I think it may be the best way to look at it , it is God actually "establishing" Pharaoh in his condition. In other words God "turns him over" to his own hard heart. Would that not be an easy way to establish any unrepentant hard-hearted sinner in his condition? It should be a terrifying thing to tell Almighty God "NO!"
Without God's grace, our sinful nature will increasingly reject God and eventually harden our hearts to the point that we raise our fists against our Creator in hell. God did not need to actively manipulate Pharaoh's sinful heart in order for it to harden. God simply withholds his grace and allows him to act out what he desires without restraints. This pictures for us how God is sovereign in who he will give mercy to sinful people. He can either give grace or withhold it.
Thank you. I know that you said this is not about calvanism but I have heard your many videos and debates where you deny Calvanism. Thank God, because as I am growing in my walk with Christ and learning more and more when I heard about calvanism I can honestly say that that doctrine his the saddest, most depressing doctrine I have ever heard. I know God does want He wants bit I always rejoiced and loved the fact that God was/is a just God. When I first learned about the doctrine of calvanism i frantically, with tears pouring down my face called every Christian and friend i know telling them what i just heard and if they had heard of it or believed it. The new Christian's, non Christian's and even some Christian's of many years were all also taken a back and filled with deep sorrow.
You just did what about every teacher does with these verses in Genesis, you only discuss these verses without ever bringing in and studying what Paul says about it in Romans. You mentioned what Paul said sure, but you didn’t go into the Greek in detail and break it all down like you did with the Genesis verses. I suspect that is because the clearness of your argument fades away in light of the plain statements that Paul made. Isn’t it entirely possible that God can make one man for a specific purpose while letting everyone else have free will? Did John the Baptist have free will? Before he was even born he was given the Holy Spirit to complete the plan God had for him. Do you think he could have chose not to do what God wanted? It is something to think about.
Think of it this way - God NEVER violates a person's free will, but in His omniscience God knows what makes each individual person "tick"; i.e. God foreknew that with every sign / plague He released on Egypt, Pharaoh would only harden his resolve even more, not to release Israel. God didn't make Pharaoh choose that way but He knew it was how Pharaoh would choose given the circumstance. So the hardening of heart was a process of "upping the ante". The first "ante" starts with Pharaoh playing games with Moses' request for Israel to go into the wilderness for three days to sacrifice and then return to Egypt. Pharaoh granted permission and asked Moses to intercede for him which Moses agreed to do but Moses asked that Pharaoh not "deal deceitfully anymore in letting the people go sacrifice to the Lord". Moses intercedes, God removes the plague of flies and what does Pharaoh do? He then does what Moses warned him not to do; he rescinds his permission to let Israel sacrifice to God in the desert after promising to allow it. And so with each refusal came even more plagues "upping the ante" until the death of the firstborn. Then after allowing Israel to leave what does Pharaoh do? He tries to bring them back into slavery until his entire army is wiped out in the sea of reeds. In the end, God was glorified because the plagues were an ominous sign to the Egyptians and to the many nations all over the Levant who heard about the Exodus - each of the plagues represented each of Egypt's gods and the one true God's absolute supremacy over the gods of Egypt. But it was also because God's JUSTICE was an integral part of the Exodus story. Israel's God not only defeated the gods of the most powerful empire on earth but did so JUSTLY.

The Pharaoh incident recorded in Exodus must also come under the scrutiny of the final authority which is not any clever teacher or manipulator of scripture, otherwise we would have no false teachers and false Prophets as the new testament forewarns, is to be redundant is the new testament scriptures. Paul uses this act of God to clearly teach that He saves who He chooses and leaves to their sin and own devices! Also we are told specifically that we are "DEAD" in sins and trespasses and that it is the Father who "DRAWS" us to the Son and that those who are saved in the end are called and chosen! The Greek supports and sustains this beyond doubt and therefore we must interpret scripture with scripture and not isolate certain passages in order to avoid the analogy and harmony of what the scriptures teach as a whole! Jesus said in no unequivocal terms, "NO MAN CAN" that is has the natural power to come to Him unless "DRAWN" by the Father who sent Him. John 6:44. So it does not matter what Dr. Brown says or tries to justify as is the case with any man but is all about what does the scripture say? If Paul was not making a case for the election of sinners he would not have used this as one of his arguments that agree with what he says plainly in so many passages! That Romans 9 thru 11 teach the election of the people of God is indisputable and is resisted by a carnal mind that is at enmity with this truth! Paul by the witness of the Holy Spirit taught this not John Calvin! Not Augustine! This is the doctrine of Christ Jesus given to us. We are those whose names were written in the book of life chosen from the foundation of the earth which is why we do not succumb to or are overcome by thee devil as it tells us in Revelation 13:8. Jesus said "many are called but few are chosen"? I wonder why? It is only our wicked and depraved hearts that cause us to resent and repudiate the doctrine of election. The elect should be oh so humble and grateful! TO HIM BE ALL GLORY FOREVER AND EVER!
Regardless of whether it is hardenenning or stengthening you still have to defend the purpose of the strengthening which was to make the Pharaoh not allow the Israelites to go, because there is a great possibility that had God not strengthened his sinful resolve, after all the plagues and pestilence that his people suffered he would have allowed the Israelites to go which would go against His plan. And there is also a question begging to be answered why the Pharaoh as powerful as he was did not attempt to kill Moses to once and for all end his misery. It can't also be argued that he feared God because if that's the case why did he chased Moses down after allowing him to go. So for this reason I'm not fully satisfied with your commentary. I tend to believe though that there are instances where God sometimes interfere with man's free will to influence the subject's decision to fulfill His purpose, as in the case of David where God sent the prophet Nathan to remind him of his sins by way of an allegorical statement, for had He not, David would not have realized he sinned and therefore not repented.
Come on Dr. Brown! Was it God or pharaoh who hardened pharaohs heart after repentance? Did God know or did God make sure? What about your adulterous friend? Did God strengthen him or did he choose to live in his lust? Did God raise pharaoh up to display his power in pharaoh or his power in the plagues? You make it sound like God didn’t force His Will on pharaoh but took credit for it. God couldn’t have let or led pharaoh to or in repentance? The potter and the clay? The potter molds the clay according to what the clay wants?
I think God hardened the Pharos hurt bec if this did not happen the Israelites will come back to Egypt once they face troubles in Sinai bec they lived 400 ys in Egypt
Interesting way of looking at it. So basically Pharaoh is an allegory for an unrepentant sinner. It does not mean that God forced him to do any thing rather since he was already committed to being evil Gods actions caused him to sort of dig in into his unrepentant behavior. At some point God just said okay do you brah.
It's interesting that doctor Brown can see the truth of Romans 9 concerning Pharaoh's heart but not the application of God creating the righteous and the wicked in Romans 9!!!!
The actions that God took were intended to strengthen the wicked resolve in Pharaoh. From sending the plagues to driving them away. Every action drove Pharaoh further and further.

God can't harden your heart. That will contradict free will. If God is all loving, then he must be just. If God is just, he must allow free will in our life. He CAN do everything, but WON'T, because he loves us too much to break his OWN word which he put above his own name.
Would a stubborn heart would be in the same boat? I really wish that He wouldn't harden hearts now... and like how the scripture says that he will turn peoples hearts back to Him. I believe I have gone through a process of heart hardening and a feeling of a spirit taken away are an inner fire too. some would say it's like a spirtual awakening or healing process or a Dark night of a soul experience. But the fears worries and anger and other negative emotions took over. It does feel like a spirtual block and something out of your control takes over and your heart does feel hard to especially love God and others and plus your mind get mad feeiing like you are getting dumber and everything you do just is never right or can choose it. Knowing you have done wrong so much and struggle to even really pray well or even get your heat humble to God in away or even hard to repent. Prayer sound so empty (or just full of anger) or lies and with no active power. the Heart does feel heave hard or blocked and also you can hear or know what you are being told but not really activily listening but become more passive and a whole lot of other things that mess around with the heart and mind on top of that.... So wish God love all so much to get all out of this state of being hardened.

For who hath resisted his will? 20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump TO MAKE one vessel unto honour, and another unto DISHONOUR?
How about in the Book of Job. God allowed evil to come upon Job all he had to say to Satan was no!! I admit he did not harden Job's heart but he had a hand in the evil that came upon Job.

I am not a Calvinist but I would like to address something here and I would love if you could take a moment and respond to it.. I agree with you that who are we to question the Potter..my question to you though is this, if Paul interpreted that Pharaoh hardened his own heart why then would he make the comments who can resist his will and why does he still find fault? If he thought Pharaoh hardened his own heart and all God was doing was confirming it, why would Paul make the statement who can resist His will and why does He still find fault if He’s the one doing it? I believe that’s what Paul is addressing in Romans chapter 9.. Right after he makes the comment about Pharaoh he makes those statements who can resist His will and why does He still find fault? Then he gives the answer to all of us “indeed oh man who are we to question God doesn’t he have the right.”again Paul’s making a statement like that because it seems clear to me that Paul is interpreting what happened as God was doing it and who are we to question Him.. doesn’t He have the right to do what he wants to do. Can’t He have mercy on whom He wants to have mercy? is it possible that God hardened pharaohs heart to show that he was powerful and who are we to question that.. so it seems to me like Paul’s argument would’ve been pointless if he thought Pharaoh did it to himself.. now I do agree with passages that you shared that there are situations where we harden our own hearts and make choices, but I also think that God sometimes will make his own choices like he did with Esau and Jacob choosing who he wanted before they were born before they did any good or evil and had any accountability concerning their choices and right after Paul said that again he said “is there a unrighteousness with God?”Why would he make that statement once again? I believe again that Paul is interpreting that God did it before they were even born and they had no choice in the matter.. So I would like to hear your explanation of why Paul would make those statements if he was interpreting it the way you are teaching it in this video.. The text says earlier on that Pharoah hardened “his own heart”. He and former rulers had enslaved the Israelites. God determined at that point pharoah and Egypt would be judged. God then controlled things so that the judgment was delivered the way God wanted. Basically after he decided to judge because of pharoah’s earlier hardening of his own heart God further hardened pharaohs heart to show the world who is boss, so that things played out as God determined - plagues etc. And the Canaanites in the region heard about the plagues God sent on Egypt, and how the Israelites got free by reason of God’s power, so they too were without excuse when they defied God and so they too were judged later on. God plays things out as he wants.
It is just an authors expression bcoz the author belief there was a good god and evil god. The pentateuch was not fully revealed by God..Even of it is inspired books but the author has a freedom to write those text.
Although I am not a Calvinist, theologically speaking, I have always admired James White passion and commitment to the Gospel. As our Lord Jesus Christ put it , there are 2 roads one leads to salvation and the other leads to condemnation.God let you decide which road you want to take.The choice is ours to make.Jesus said he will knock on your door (heart) if you let him in he will come in and dwell in you (Holy Spirit), is up to us if we let Jesus in or not.Jesus will not break the door and force himself in, Satan would force himself in but God never would do it!.So you see we have the choice to either accept Jesus into our hearts or to reject him, God would never ever impose himself to us by force. Pre destination eliminates that choice and in a way give those that reject the Gospel a reason to blame God and not their own choice for their demise. Someone predestined to go to hell and not be among the chosen would argue: since I was predestined from birth not to receive the Gospel and to reject it, what was God purpose in the first place when He created me?.Would have not been better for God not to allow me to be born in the first place than to suffer eternal condemnation for something (Jesus/salvation/the gospel) that I never had no other choice what so ever but to reject it?.The micro second I was born I was lost and condemned right there and then, that is what predestination means!.When Adam listened to Satan and sinned against God Adam had a choice of either reject Satan's words and obey God or to disobey God.God did not made the choice for Adam, Adam sinned out of free will!.God could have stopped Adam right there and then but he let Adam make his choice!.The same way God let us make the choice of accepting His salvation through the atonement of Jesus sacrifice in the cross.God give the same opportunity to all mankind to be save, the choice will always be ours to either be saved or be condemned by accepting or rejecting God offer.That is the main purpose when the Gospel is preached to all mankind , so no man would have an excuse when God judgment upon his soul is decreed by Our Lord himself. I know you don't want to take a stance here, wonderful, I agree, but cant we also say from your reading that nowhere does God in a strange way pantheistically entre the heart of his creation to himself distribute stubbornness from somewhere inside himself,, or from an occult or secret eternal decree or will for evil.. Also that he has revealed himself to act this way, for the very reason to have mercy on all,, nowhere disguising his motives behind the curtain of an uncertain source of demonic evil. We can also take for granted that God here is not in heavens fighting his own secret or occult will to both make and destroy evil. Surely Dr,, we can submit that the lesson of the God of Israel here is his one resolve to destroy that which does not come from a secret occult will he hides, but from a satanic source, separated from himself, and of the world..Surely we can say with confidence that the above mentioned god,, surely is not the God of Abraham but a different one from a kabalistic source or exactly from Egypt, later adopted by some sages, the Gnostics, and Augustine, demonstrably .. Appreciated this understanding with the exception of the Calvinist idea of sovereignty. God can't do whatever he pleases. He's bound by laws that He created. In the New Covenant Jesus could do no mighty works of healing because of the peoples unbelief. As in this example, Pharaoh resisted God and God could not work with that. In order for God to do His will we much comply with faith and belief. Unbelief stifles the will of God. I was also wondering if this is the New Covenant idea of Paul turning someone over to Satan....
I would have to disagree with you. There are plenty of scripture in whole books, in Psalms, and in Proverbs that magnify the sovereignty of God. Even Psalms directly contradict your comment. Psalms 135:6 is an example of that. Yes, God can't sin, but that's not a thing that strips him of his sovereignty. If he does what he pleases, he won't sin, since he does not desire sin. On another point, I'm not sure I would say he's bound by laws, God created and upholds it, but the law is who he is. No one says you are bound to be who you are, you just are. That's like saying he's a slave of righteousness, which may sound good at first, but it puts the law above the law maker. In a short conclusion, I think I understand where you are coming from, but I have a disagreement with your main premise.
The scripture is clear. Everywhere in scripture where God hardens a persons heart it is always because those people chose to completely reject God beforehand. We even see this in Romans where Paul says that because people do not like to retain God in their knowledge, such people have been given over to a reprobate mind to continue in their sinful acts. God hardens hearts that are already turned away from Him. Nowhere in scripture does it state that God hardens a persons heart that leads them to condemnation. The heart's that God hardens were already heading towards condemnation to begin with.
Dr Brown, I've agreed with your take for many years. Does it seem that the ones hardened, also are the ones who witnessed MIRACLES ? (pharasees, during time when Jesus was doing miracles )
I think Dr. Brown said it plainly more than once: God is sovereign and we don't get to lecture God. God was going to demonstrate His glory through this event. Instead of God waiting for the right individual that would be such a "hard-hearted sinner", (is that not all of us?) He could have waited for a "less" sinful pharoah that would have said "sure, I'll let them go", without the plagues and without the miracles. However, in God's sovereignty and determination this would be the way He chose to show the people of Israel His power, glory, and majesty. Even though this language of "hard-hearted" isn't there, we would have to agree that there was no person more determined and "resolved" in his ways than Saul of Tarsus, however, in this case God intervened in a radical way and literally stopped Saul in his tracks. It would seem to me that there must have been some violation of "free will" there to some degree. God could have intervened in Pharoah's life like He did in Saul's had He chosen to but He didn't. Intervene in such a powerful and convincing way that Pharoah would have "freely" chosen to opt for the Yahweh way rather than stay hardened. He could have revealed His glory to the Egyptians in a salvific way if He wanted to, but He didn't. I know the point of the video was not to go into an Arminian-Calvinist discussion; but it's quite unavoidable, I think. By the way, I love and respect Dr. Brown and all the wonderful work that He does and I have learned a lot from His books and radio program. He has just not persuaded me away from my Calvinism.
did Dr. Brown say God hardened Pharoah's heart in ch. 7 verse 13? in my bible is says " And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD has said". Is seems like Dr. Brown was saying the text was talking about the state of pharoah's heart but I see God already hardeneing.
Oh, Dr. Brown, thank you. I just finished listening to the rest of the message. Thank God, I finally heard out of your own mouth what position you took on the man you just spoke about. That unrepented, disgusting, rebellious man that hurt hundreds of thousands of people that found out he was living in open blatant sin has a spirit of witch craft and should have never, ever been restored to ministry by those leaders that turned a blind eye to his unrepented sin. Because of his restoration the message of Christ and His gospel along with christianity has been given a huge blow and has given glory to Satan and all Satans followers as they laugh and mock christianity and christian leaders. I have heard and read the laughter and mocking myself. I believe the things this young leader of a revival will go down in history along with all his supporters as one of the biggest, blasphemous christian failures in all of history.
I look at it this way: Pharaoh's heart was like a bag of dry cement mix. God just added the water. God already knew what kind of man Pharaoh was in his killing of the Hebrew baby boys. He brought recompense upon him and his false gods with the 10 plagues, the last being the death of Egypt's firstborn (recompense for the baby boys). Atheists are always complaining about God hardening Pharaoh's heart. So I like to ask them, "was it before or after Pharaoh chose to kill the Hebrew baby boys?" Yeah, it was after. Don't mess with God or His people!
brother I cannot find a you tube on the question I am about to ask so if there is can you please point me to it. if and organisation has (lets say) 27 doctrinal points and claim them to be unchangeable but you see errs and don't accept them. they then you exclude you from the body of Christ or the church. Why do church organisations do this?
Cecilia Baker dear friend, the problem with church organizations is that they have alot of beliefs that are odd. Casting you out isn't right. If you see errors pray to God about it. He will hear you and if the church really is that bad then he will bring you somewhere else. Also remember the body of Christ isn't a church. It is the people. If there was no church building the body of Christ would still remain. Spend time with other believers who can build you up. God won't send you to hell for not attending a church service every week. Church organizations are run by man who are faulty and sometimes make terrible decisions.
0:49 is where I stopped. I must share this. I grappled with that verse about Pharaoh, and also with the one this man quoted about the Lord being the Potter Who can do what He wants. Quite frankly, misquoting any verse- or quoting without understanding, can be a mechanization of the devil himself to turn people's hearts against the faith. The Lord did NOT make us like unto clay- without feeling or the capacity to reason. ALSO- to think that God would behave towards His creations in such an unjust, cruel, and arbitrary manner is a blasphemous way to think about HIM. These verses put the hardening of Pharaoh's heart into perspective for me. Lam. 3:64 You will pay them back *what they deserve,* O LORD, according to the work of their hands. 65 You will give them *hardness of heart;* may Your curse be upon them! 66 You will pursue them in anger and exterminate them from under the heavens of the LORD.

I am using the kjv and I see hardened not hard. Hardened seems more like a change in state not an explaination of the current state.... where is Dr. Brown getting the explanation of the state of Pharoah's heart instead of a changing in Pharoah's heart?
The problem here is that Paul writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in Romans 9 doesn't use the word meaning to strengthen in the Greek, but to harden when referring to God's dealings with Pharaoh. Maybe Dr Brown is better equipped than Paul was thus being able to tell the translators of ALL of the English versions that they are all wrong as well as Paul.

Furthermore the first place in Exodus four, the first time it's mentioned God said he will harden. Paul knew the Hebrew and yet under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he didn't use the word strengthen but to harden in the Greek.

Correct, God does not sin. I found the best way to explain this is “I will harden Pharaoh’s heart” = “What I do will anger Pharaoh into rages and fits and he will change his mind as he grows colder and colder in his heart and actions”. Pharaoh chose to harden his heart because of YHWY’s power over him and his magicians. Pharaohs believed they were a god, and the only One embarrassed him to his people. “I made him angry” means what I did angered him, we can’t make someone angry, they actually choose it based on many reasons. Reread it that way and see if the Holy Spirit says “Yes” :)

This sounds a lot like the Calvinistic view of hardening. I assume Dr. Brown doesn't think anyone actually thinks that God causes Pharoh to sin. The Calvinistic view is not so much God imposing something on Pharoh, but rather increasingly withdrawing his something from him. As God loosens his restraint upon Pharoh's heart, Pharoh becomes more and more what he already is - a sinner. And in like wise, it is the Holy Spirit that restrains mankind from being as sinful as they can be. There is even an end times prophecy that says that in the last days, that Holy Spirit restraint will be removed from all mankind, causing all the apocalyptic events to come to pass.
KirbyLWallace Curious if you think the character of men plays a role in hardening vs grace. Could Pharoah show the faith of Abraham and Abraham be the villain solely based on God's choosing? God can do, what god wants to do, because he’s god. That justifies nothing -right is right and wrong is wrong. As it has been said: “Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Only a foolish human would justify such unrestraint -the ability and willingness to harm and heal, with only one’s self interest at heart. They do not understand that calling oneself something other than Christian is just a way to describe the doctrine that you believe in. For all of you people in the future reading this, the term Calvinist is very frequently used just to refer to the fact that someone ascribes to the doctrine of individual election. That does not mean that they ascribe to all of Calvin's doctrine. Many Calvinists, for example, are Reformed Baptists, versus Prebyterian. Both have their differences from Calvin's exact theology, and Reformed Baptist theology does not agree with paedobaptism. Please learn to listen to other people's perspectives before you make yourself a fool in the sight of your fellow brothers and sisters. This same idea is expressed in Romans 1:19-28 where those who harden their hearts by refusing the obvious existence of God refuse to acknowledge Him and turn from their sins are said to be "given over to a reprobate mind".
About God hardening Pharaoh's heart - I like to think of it as a "passive" action. For instance, suppose you put a chunk of clay and a chunk of wax outside on a hot sunny day. What happens? The sun will melt the wax, but will harden the clay. The sun was just being itself - it wasn't necessarily trying to do anything to either substance. The wax was melted because of what it is made of. Same with the clay. Pharaoh's heart becoming hard in God's presence exposes what it was made of.

That's perfect for when Pharaoh's heart was hardened passively, but verses also say that God actively hardened his heart and the Pharaoh actively hardened his own heart, so all 3 types of hardening are present in the story at different times

I have wondered about this since, at least in English, God is said "I will harden" which is future tense so the question is when did He do so. Did He do so right after having stated it? Well, we are not told that He did so until after Pharaoh did it to himself first.

Dear ASKDrBrown: Great explanation! The word of God gave me a picture of what you shared brother Mike. Relating to your beginning quote about out the sun shines on the clay and butter, making one hard and one soft. Here it is: There are two soils. The Sun of Righteous shines on both soils with the intent to soften both. On both a seed is cast. One soil rejects the seed. The other soils receives the seed within a crack or cut (circumcision). Then the sun shines on the first soil. With no rain, the already hard soil gets harder and harder until all the water has left. This soil looks like those deserts starving for water with hexagon shaped cracks. Any rain just immediately dries up under such unshaded sun. The 2nd soil has just enough water in which the seed to root. The new leaves give shade to the soil. The roots break up the soil even more. Eventually a new tree grows and drops leaves which decays as organic matter, further softening the soil. The tree invites birds of the air to come who further fertilize and soften the ground below. The tree drops fruit and seeds within to continue to increase the next generation of soil softening. The moral: God does nothing wrong when hearts are hardened. All He does is good - send the sun, the rain and seed. The soil that rejects the voice of the word of God grows hard. As it is written, "when you hear my voice, harden not your hearts"!
This is pretty good. It's consistent with what I've heard in the past. The only thing I'd add and maybe take issue with is the last hardening that is spoken of. I'm not sure what Dr. Brown is saying there but it sounds as though he's not making a distinction between the various hardenings. Only that God says He is going to "strengthen" Pharaoh's "resolve" It seems to me that the last hardening is a fulfillment of what God says in the beginning.
I've heard it said, and I think it may be the best way to look at it , it is God actually "establishing" Pharaoh in his condition. In other words God "turns him over" to his own hard heart. Would that not be an easy way to establish any unrepentant hard-hearted sinner in his condition?
It should be a terrifying thing to tell Almighty God "NO!"
Without God's grace, our sinful nature will increasingly reject God and eventually harden our hearts to the point that we raise our fists against our Creator in hell. God did not need to actively manipulate Pharaoh's sinful heart in order for it to harden. God simply withholds his grace and allows him to act out what he desires without restraints. This pictures for us how God is sovereign in who he will give mercy to sinful people. He can either give grace or withhold it.

Thank God, because as I am growing in my walk with Christ and learning more and more when I heard about calvanism I can honestly say that that doctrine his the saddest, most depressing doctrine I have ever heard. I know God does want He wants bit I always rejoiced and loved the fact that God was/is a just God. When I first learned about the doctrine of calvanism i frantically, with tears pouring down my face called every Christian and friend i know telling them what i just heard and if they had heard of it or believed it. The new Christian's, non Christian's and even some Christian's of many years were all also taken a back and filled with deep sorrow.

You just did what about every teacher does with these verses in Genesis, you only discuss these verses without ever bringing in and studying what Paul says about it in Romans. You mentioned what Paul said sure, but you didn’t go into the Greek in detail and break it all down like you did with the Genesis verses.
I suspect that is because the clearness of your argument fades away in light of the plain statements that Paul made.

Before he was even born he was given the Holy Spirit to complete the plan God had for him. Do you think he could have chose not to do what God wanted?
It is something to think about.
Think of it this way - God NEVER violates a person's free will, but in His omniscience God knows what makes each individual person "tick"; i.e. God foreknew that with every sign / plague He released on Egypt, Pharaoh would only harden his resolve even more, not to release Israel. God didn't make Pharaoh choose that way but He knew it was how Pharaoh would choose given the circumstance. So the hardening of heart was a process of "upping the ante". The first "ante" starts with Pharaoh playing games with Moses' request for Israel to go into the wilderness for three days to sacrifice and then return to Egypt. Pharaoh granted permission and asked Moses to intercede for him which Moses agreed to do but Moses asked that Pharaoh not "deal deceitfully anymore in letting the people go sacrifice to the Lord". Moses intercedes, God removes the plague of flies and what does Pharaoh do? He then does what Moses warned him not to do; he rescinds his permission to let Israel sacrifice to God in the desert after promising to allow it. And so with each refusal came even more plagues "upping the ante" until the death of the firstborn. Then after allowing Israel to leave what does Pharaoh do? He tries to bring them back into slavery until his entire army is wiped out in the sea of reeds. In the end, God was glorified because the plagues were an ominous sign to the Egyptians and to the many nations all over the Levant who heard about the Exodus - each of the plagues represented each of Egypt's gods and the one true God's absolute supremacy over the gods of Egypt. But it was also because God's JUSTICE was an integral part of the Exodus story. Israel's God not only defeated the gods of the most powerful empire on earth but did so JUSTLY.

The Pharaoh incident recorded in Exodus must also come under the scrutiny of the final authority which is not any clever teacher or manipulator of scripture, otherwise we would have no false teachers and false Prophets as the new testament forewarns, is to be redundant is the new testament scriptures. Paul uses this act of God to clearly teach that He saves who He chooses and leaves to their sin and own devices! Also we are told specifically that we are "DEAD" in sins and trespasses and that it is the Father who "DRAWS" us to the Son and that those who are saved in the end are called and chosen! The Greek supports and sustains this beyond doubt and therefore we must interpret scripture with scripture and not isolate certain passages in order to avoid the analogy and harmony of what the scriptures teach as a whole! Jesus said in no unequivocal terms, "NO MAN CAN" that is has the natural power to come to Him unless "DRAWN" by the Father who sent Him. John 6:44. So it does not matter what Dr. Brown says or tries to justify as is the case with any man but is all about what does the scripture say? If Paul was not making a case for the election of sinners he would not have used this as one of his arguments that agree with what he says plainly in so many passages! That Romans 9 thru 11 teach the election of the people of God is indisputable and is resisted by a carnal mind that is at enmity with this truth! Paul by the witness of the Holy Spirit taught this not John Calvin! Not Augustine! This is the doctrine of Christ Jesus given to us. We are those whose names were written in the book of life chosen from the foundation of the earth which is why we do not succumb to or are overcome by thee devil as it tells us in Revelation 13:8. Jesus said "many are called but few are chosen"? I wonder why? It is only our wicked and depraved hearts that cause us to resent and repudiate the doctrine of election. The elect should be oh so humble and grateful! TO HIM BE ALL GLORY FOREVER AND EVER!

Regardless of whether it is hardenenning or stengthening you still have to defend the purpose of the strengthening which was to make the Pharaoh not allow the Israelites to go, because there is a great possibility that had God not strengthened his sinful resolve, after all the plagues and pestilence that his people suffered he would have allowed the Israelites to go which would go against His plan. And there is also a question begging to be answered why the Pharaoh as powerful as he was did not attempt to kill Moses to once and for all end his misery. It can't also be argued that he feared God because if that's the case why did he chased Moses down after allowing him to go. So for this reason I'm not fully satisfied with your commentary. I tend to believe though that there are instances where God sometimes interfere with man's free will to influence the subject's decision to fulfill His purpose, as in the case of David where God sent the prophet Nathan to remind him of his sins by way of an allegorical statement, for had He not, David would not have realized he sinned and therefore not repented.

Interesting way of looking at it. So basically Pharaoh is an allegory for an unrepentant sinner. It does not mean that God forced him to do any thing rather since he was already committed to being evil Gods actions caused him to sort of dig in into his unrepentant behavior. At some point God just said okay do you brah.
I think the question is always how YHWH hardened pharaohs heart. It wasn’t just spontaneous, it was using pharaohs ego against him.

The actions that God took were intended to strengthen the wicked resolve in Pharaoh. From sending the plagues to driving them away. Every action drove Pharaoh further and further.

Would a stubborn heart would be in the same boat? I really wish that He wouldn't harden hearts now... and like how the scripture says that he will turn peoples hearts back to Him.
I believe I have gone through a process of heart hardening and a feeling of a spirit taken away are an inner fire too. some would say it's like a spirtual awakening or healing process or a Dark night of a soul experience. But the fears worries and anger and other negative emotions took over. It does feel like a spirtual block and something out of your control takes over and your heart does feel hard to especially love God and others and plus your mind get mad feeiing like you are getting dumber and everything you do just is never right or can choose it. Knowing you have done wrong so much and struggle to even really pray well or even get your heat humble to God in away or even hard to repent. Prayer sound so empty (or just full of anger) or lies and with no active power. the Heart does feel heave hard or blocked and also you can hear or know what you are being told but not really activily listening but become more passive and a whole lot of other things that mess around with the heart and mind on top of that.... So wish God love all so much to get all out of this state of being hardened.
How the love of God in Christ can soten the hardest heart... Please Lord for the sake of love in your name

How about in the Book of Job. God allowed evil to come upon Job all he had to say to Satan was no!! I admit he did not harden Job's heart but he had a hand in the evil that came upon Job.

I am not a Calvinist but I would like to address something here and I would love if you could take a moment and respond to it.. I agree with you that who are we to question the Potter..my question to you though is this, if Paul interpreted that Pharaoh hardened his own heart why then would he make the comments who can resist his will and why does he still find fault? If he thought Pharaoh hardened his own heart and all God was doing was confirming it, why would Paul make the statement who can resist His will and why does He still find fault if He’s the one doing it? I believe that’s what Paul is addressing in Romans chapter 9.. Right after he makes the comment about Pharaoh he makes those statements who can resist His will and why does He still find fault? Then he gives the answer to all of us “indeed oh man who are we to question God doesn’t he have the right.”again Paul’s making a statement like that because it seems clear to me that Paul is interpreting what happened as God was doing it and who are we to question Him.. doesn’t He have the right to do what he wants to do. Can’t He have mercy on whom He wants to have mercy? is it possible that God hardened pharaohs heart to show that he was powerful and who are we to question that.. so it seems to me like Paul’s argument would’ve been pointless if he thought Pharaoh did it to himself.. now I do agree with passages that you shared that there are situations where we harden our own hearts and make choices, but I also think that God sometimes will make his own choices like he did with Esau and Jacob choosing who he wanted before they were born before they did any good or evil and had any accountability concerning their choices and right after Paul said that again he said “is there a unrighteousness with God?”Why would he make that statement once again? I believe again that Paul is interpreting that God did it before they were even born and they had no choice in the matter.. So I would like to hear your explanation of why Paul would make those statements if he was interpreting it the way you are teaching it in this video.. I think by the end of chapter 11 Paul does what a lot of us do, we just throw our hands up in the air and we make this statement that Paul made in Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! The text says earlier on that Pharoah hardened “his own heart”. He and former rulers had enslaved the Israelites. God determined at that point pharoah and Egypt would be judged. God then controlled things so that the judgment was delivered the way God wanted. Basically after he decided to judge because of pharoah’s earlier hardening of his own heart God further hardened pharaohs heart to show the world who is boss, so that things played out as God determined - plagues etc. And the Canaanites in the region heard about the plagues God sent on Egypt, and how the Israelites got free by reason of God’s power, so they too were without excuse when they defied God and so they too were judged later on. God plays things out as he wants.
It is just an authors expression bcoz the author belief there was a good god and evil god. The pentateuch was not fully revealed by God..Even of it is inspired books but the author has a freedom to write those text.

Although I am not a Calvinist, theologically speaking, I have always admired James White passion and commitment to the Gospel. As our Lord Jesus Christ put it , there are 2 roads one leads to salvation and the other leads to condemnation.God let you decide which road you want to take.The choice is ours to make.Jesus said he will knock on your door (heart) if you let him in he will come in and dwell in you (Holy Spirit), is up to us if we let Jesus in or not.Jesus will not break the door and force himself in, Satan would force himself in but God never would do it!.So you see we have the choice to either accept Jesus into our hearts or to reject him, God would never ever impose himself to us by force. Pre destination eliminates that choice and in a way give those that reject the Gospel a reason to blame God and not their own choice for their demise.

Appreciated this understanding with the exception of the Calvinist idea of sovereignty. God can't do whatever he pleases. He's bound by laws that He created. In the New Covenant Jesus could do no mighty works of healing because of the peoples unbelief. As in this example, Pharaoh resisted God and God could not work with that. In order for God to do His will we much comply with faith and belief. Unbelief stifles the will of God. I was also wondering if this is the New Covenant idea of Paul turning someone over to Satan....
I would have to disagree with you. There are plenty of scripture in whole books, in Psalms, and in Proverbs that magnify the sovereignty of God. Even Psalms directly contradict your comment. Psalms 135:6 is an example of that. Yes, God can't sin, but that's not a thing that strips him of his sovereignty. If he does what he pleases, he won't sin, since he does not desire sin. On another point, I'm not sure I would say he's bound by laws, God created and upholds it, but the law is who he is. No one says you are bound to be who you are, you just are. That's like saying he's a slave of righteousness, which may sound good at first, but it puts the law above the law maker. In a short conclusion, I think I understand where you are coming from, but I have a disagreement with your main premise.
The scripture is clear. Everywhere in scripture where God hardens a persons heart it is always because those people chose to completely reject God beforehand. We even see this in Romans where Paul says that because people do not like to retain God in their knowledge, such people have been given over to a reprobate mind to continue in their sinful acts. God hardens hearts that are already turned away from Him. Nowhere in scripture does it state that God hardens a persons heart that leads them to condemnation. The heart's that God hardens were already heading towards condemnation to begin with.

I think Dr. Brown said it plainly more than once: God is sovereign and we don't get to lecture God. God was going to demonstrate His glory through this event. Instead of God waiting for the right individual that would be such a "hard-hearted sinner", (is that not all of us?) He could have waited for a "less" sinful pharoah that would have said "sure, I'll let them go", without the plagues and without the miracles. However, in God's sovereignty and determination this would be the way He chose to show the people of Israel His power, glory, and majesty. Even though this language of "hard-hearted" isn't there, we would have to agree that there was no person more determined and "resolved" in his ways than Saul of Tarsus, however, in this case God intervened in a radical way and literally stopped Saul in his tracks. It would seem to me that there must have been some violation of "free will" there to some degree. God could have intervened in Pharoah's life like He did in Saul's had He chosen to but He didn't. Intervene in such a powerful and convincing way that Pharoah would have "freely" chosen to opt for the Yahweh way rather than stay hardened. He could have revealed His glory to the Egyptians in a salvific way if He wanted to, but He didn't. I know the point of the video was not to go into an Arminian-Calvinist discussion; but it's quite unavoidable, I think. By the way, I love and respect Dr. Brown and all the wonderful work that He does and I have learned a lot from His books and radio program. He has just not persuaded me away from my Calvinism.

Is seems like Dr. Brown was saying the text was talking about the state of pharoah's heart but I see God already hardeneing.

Oh, Dr. Brown, thank you. I just finished listening to the rest of the message. Thank God, I finally heard out of your own mouth what position you took on the man you just spoke about. That unrepented, disgusting, rebellious man that hurt hundreds of thousands of people that found out he was living in open blatant sin has a spirit of witch craft and should have never, ever been restored to ministry by those leaders that turned a blind eye to his unrepented sin. I look at it this way: Pharaoh's heart was like a bag of dry cement mix. God just added the water. God already knew what kind of man Pharaoh was in his killing of the Hebrew baby boys. He brought recompense upon him and his false gods with the 10 plagues, the last being the death of Egypt's firstborn (recompense for the baby boys). Atheists are always complaining about God hardening Pharaoh's heart. So I like to ask them, "was it before or after Pharaoh chose to kill the Hebrew baby boys?" Yeah, it was after. brother I cannot find a you tube on the question I am about to ask so if there is can you please point me to it. if and organisation has (lets say) 27 doctrinal points and claim them to be unchangeable but you see errs and don't accept them. they then you exclude you from the body of Christ or the church. Why do church organisations do this?
Cecilia Baker dear friend, the problem with church organizations is that they have alot of beliefs that are odd. Casting you out isn't right. If you see errors pray to God about it. He will hear you and if the church really is that bad then he will bring you somewhere else. Also remember the body of Christ isn't a church. It is the people. If there was no church building the body of Christ would still remain. Spend time with other believers who can build you up. God won't send you to hell for not attending a church service every week. Church organizations are run by man who are faulty and sometimes make terrible decisions.

The problem here is that Paul writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in Romans 9 doesn't use the word meaning to strengthen in the Greek, but to harden when referring to God's dealings with Pharaoh. Maybe Dr Brown is better equipped than Paul was thus being able to tell the translators of ALL of the English versions that they are all wrong as well as Paul.
The Greek and Hebrew are basically saying the same thing. For one to strengthen themselves in their rebellion is as being hardened in it.

Furthermore the first place in Exodus four, the first time it's mentioned God said he will harden. Paul knew the Hebrew and yet under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he didn't use the word strengthen but to harden in the Greek.

Correct, God does not sin. I found the best way to explain this is “I will harden Pharaoh’s heart” = “What I do will anger Pharaoh into rages and fits and he will change his mind as he grows colder and colder in his heart and actions”. Pharaoh chose to harden his heart because of YHWY’s power over him and his magicians. Pharaohs believed they were a god, and the only One embarrassed him to his people. “I made him angry” means what I did angered him, we can’t make someone angry, they actually choose it based on many reasons. Reread it that way and see if the Holy Spirit says “Yes” :)

This sounds a lot like the Calvinistic view of hardening. I assume Dr. Brown doesn't think anyone actually thinks that God causes Pharoh to sin. The Calvinistic view is not so much God imposing something on Pharoh, but rather increasingly withdrawing his something from him. As God loosens his restraint upon Pharoh's heart, Pharoh becomes more and more what he already is - a sinner. And in like wise, it is the Holy Spirit that restrains mankind from being as sinful as they can be. There is even an end times prophecy that says that in the last days, that Holy Spirit restraint will be removed from all mankind, causing all the apocalyptic events to come to pass.
KirbyLWallace Curious if you think the character of men plays a role in hardening vs grace. Could Pharoah show the faith of Abraham and Abraham be the villain solely based on God's choosing? Not asking CAN God do that, but DOES God do that? OR does He choose Pharoah and Abraham because their character is sufficient to play their part?

God can do, what god wants to do, because he’s god. That justifies nothing -right is right and wrong is wrong. As it has been said: “Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Only a foolish human would justify such unrestraint -the ability and willingness to harm and heal, with only one’s self interest at heart. Such actions have been observed in human rulers throughout history. There is nothing righteous about יהוה in the Bible -when read as it is written, and not through the distorted interpretation of fools - the Bible is a witness against and not for him. But more importantly, it is evident that it is nothing more then the narrative of men radiated from from their own minds and hearts.
