I am Japanese, and I find the usage of the word "tekitou"(適当) interesting. In fact, the dictionary is not wrong. Unfortunately, misunderstandings can arise from a lack of knowledge among some Japanese people, such as the man in this case. The word "適当" has three primary meanings, which are as follows: 1.Being suitable, fitting, or appropriate for a specific purpose or situation. 2.Being moderate or reasonable in degree, neither too much nor too little. 3.Being rough, careless, or sloppy in doing something, lacking precision or attention to detail. While the third meaning has become more common recently, it does not mean that this usage is the only correct one. In this case, the term "tekisetsu"(適切) is merely a synonym, and does not add any additional meaning. However, precisely because of this, I believe that learning a language can be a joyful and rewarding endeavor.

TYSM i moved to Japan and hubby usually speaks English to me. I was taking private lessons online with COTO but stopped after a few months due to loss of big income I had when I came here and hubby doesn't work. I had to scramble to get basic income and hubby and I had cultural clashes and I was blue (even though I am half Japanese, older generation Japanese men are a bit tough to get) BUT we are more peaceful now but your videos were the first of hundreds and hundreds to inspire me to study again, your videos are amazing! 99% of rest of Japanese videos bore me, yours are refreshing, pro quality, charming, informative, unique, cool, whole package, bravo! Man how I wish I had come across such recommendations in my earliest days of learning Japanese... Trying to understand every single word is such a dead end. Never been through such a demotivating phase in my whole life, never felt so stupid, humiliated and limited either than when spending all my energy doing this...(except maybe when I took an online class in Immunology without having any serious background in biology...that was a hard blow on self-esteem as well)
I knowww, wish someone told me this too 😂 it’s just so tempting to want to know EVERYTHING you see/hear, but you just can’t pick up everything at once and need to work your way up. No need to be so hard on yourself - everyone makes these mistakes!! (And immunology is very difficult 😂)

Check out "Houhou SRS", the problem with Anki is that it depends on the student whether he is honestly studying or not. We might sometimes make mistake and just say "yeah that was what I was thinking" and put it on "good". But houhou makes you type the answer and specifically designed for this Japanese kanji and vocab stuff. off course we can add items too. Must try it's free. also there is list of kanji and vocab so we can add them without going to any website to add them. It is like a dictionary linked with SRS.

I felt the same too!! I ignored learning kanji in the beginning but now i really appreciate how much easier it is to understand japanese sentences and new vocab if you know the kanji 🤧

One thing that I've used with great success recently is something called a "mind palace". Basically you just imagine a location and you store your mnemonics at various "stops" in that location. When you need to recall them, you just walk through your mind palace and look at what you stored. The best thing about the system is that I can review my vocab anytime and anywhere with no flash cards or apps. I read about it in a book called "You Can Have An Amazing Memory" by Dominic O'brien and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to quickly and effectively memorize and practice foreign language vocab or anything else for that matter.

2:03 Not necessarily true tho. I know plenty of N1's with a lot of reading vocab knowledge who can't understand a thing in Anime without subs. Knowing 10,000 vocab words to passing a test and recognizing words and their meaning in context through listening are completely different skillsets.

@@TokuyuuTV I think the 逆 is true also. You don't need to wait till N1 to start understand anime without subs. I'm at N3 now, and I can say I can fairly understand 80-90% of the anime I've watched. Only anime with complex sci fi plots require me to use subs. Even then I get 50-60% of the plotline. It ultimately boils down to the type of vocab you're exposed to. For e.g. I understand 0 Japanese politics (neither do I intend to since I have no interest in it). Investing in listening and speaking related about your topic of interest from a advanced beginner to pre-intermediate level is the best (and fun) way to learn in my opinion. (Unless you're after certificates that is..😛)
@@meetthemasters754 damnnn super impressive you can understand that much of the anime you watch - I was definitely not at that level when I was N3! Interesting point about focusing on learning certain 'subjects' of vocab, definitely true that a particular genre will tend to use the same set of vocab. Could be a great way for people to expedite the process of being able to watch their favourite anime 😃

I just am curious, I want to master N5. But there are more Kanji in the vocab than in the 80 N5 Kanji. Shouild I concentrate on both Vocab and coresponding Kanji? Or focus on the vocab first? We need more videos from you!

What about trying to split in vocab a sentence? If I try to learn vocab reading manga I always get stuck easily because words are mixed with grammar, or different ways to speak. By the way, any recommended deck to learn the most common words? Thank you!
Yeah it can be difficult to figure out what a word is when it's conjugated and mixed with the rest of the sentence. Definitely make sure you are studying grammar too, because that will make it easier to identify the root word. And some Japanese-English dictionary apps can tell you the root word if you type in a conjugated version. The one I use is called 'takoboto' (Android). For iphone my friend uses 'shirabejisho'! Definitely really nice being able to write out the sentence in the app 😩👌
Ahahahah I'm glad you found my next video! I listed most of my vocab-learning tips in this video - since there is sooo much vocab in Japanese once you reach an advanced level, a big part of vocab study is just picking words up from conversations and through Japanese media!
I dont learn kanji well and basically I don't have systematic way of learning. I did like you said which i just try to find every meaning of words i dont know. Recently i used the word やってるinstead of やれる because i was a bit confused with its conjugation and my Japanese friends chuckled at me. It wasnt until the next day that when i Google it, i found out its a slang for something inappropriate HAHAHHAHAHA GOD THE EMBARRASSMENT
LMAOOOOO i love that, that’s definitely a very common word with very dangerous consequences if used incorrectly 😂😂 glad to know you have japanese friends to practice with tho! that’s definitely a privilege 😌 dont be afraid to keep making the embarrassing mistakes because using the language is the fastest way to retain it!

It's taken quite for a while for me to realise that there are even words I don't understand when talking to people,reading and watching movies in my own native language. Do I google it? Nope. I just skip past it and continue my day as normal. Does that make me less native in my own language? Of course not. Sooo, same thing in Japanese 💁🏼♀️ Also: 青木まりこ現象 - most useless word/expression ever. I'll remember it 😂
Very good point to mention! We often hear words in our own languages that we don’t understand, and THAT’S OKAY!! There are just gonna be some rare/useless words in every language. LMAOOOO let me know if you use it successfully 😂
I think you here now, congrats. I am here too, near Fuji, I love it here, i love the food, esp sweets! Got here by marriage! Proxy marriage! I wasn't even in Japan when hubby married me here. I am half-Japanese but my mother did not register my birth on koseki and she would not help me get Child of a Japanese National. She told me I am American only and should get an American meal ticket hubby in the US like she did. I did the opposite I married a Japanese man and I am his meal ticket lozl! I have relatives in Tokyo but my mother is estranged from them, they don't speak English. I will learn Japanese with your tips! :D P.S. As kid my mom wouldn't even let us eat Japanese food, she would say Japanese food is only for her. She hit us and whipped us and terrorized us a lot too and because of that I hated anything Japanese until I saw Texan in Tokyo on UA-cam (they no longer make videos) and I saw how cute and sweet they were and I then got a tsunami Japanese fever and got here. I can eat Japanese food now everyday and all day long and I am so Japanese food happy! My Japanese hubby often says "Good appetite! Sugoi!" Oh God its like Japanese food heaven here!

I’m beyond happy that you are enjoying living in japan now and eating as much japanese food as you want after all that time of not being able to touch it. From what I looked up, the pitch accent doesn’t change! But you should be able to tell based on the context and how the speaker conveys their emotion (for positive vs negative meetings)😝
If you’re using anki, I recommend 5-10 new words a day. With the vocab for review stacking up over time, i think it’s the perfect amount! I touch on this as well in my ‘How to become fluent in Japanese from ZERO’ video as well!
There is a sentence in Demon Slayer: Ore wa Kami, Omaera wa Gomi (I'm god, you're trash.) If you pay attend to subtitles when watching anime sometimes that makes help you. :)
I am learning Japanese as well, mostly through self learning. For people who are language enthusiasts, I suggest to try out Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. In fact, it is the oldest writing system in the world. It is the most phonetically accurate language, unambiguous with no two possible interpretations of the same word. And why learn Sanskrit? It opens your world to a lot of philosophy, art, poetry, music, culture & spirituality from one if the oldest and scientific religious traditions in the world. Good luck.

I hate Kanji at first but now I found it very helpful. It is more difficult to read and understand Japanese sentence without Kanji😅

BAHAHAHAHHA understanding anime without subtitles is the ultimate purpose of life prove me wrong 😌🙏
One thing that I've used with great success recently is something called a "mind palace". Basically you just imagine a location and you store your mnemonics at various "stops" in that location. When you need to recall them, you just walk through your mind palace and look at what you stored. The best thing about the system is that I can review my vocab anytime and anywhere with no flash cards or apps. I read about it in a book called "You Can Have An Amazing Memory" by Dominic O'brien and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to quickly and effectively memorize and practice foreign language vocab or anything else for that matter.

2:03 Not necessarily true tho. I know plenty of N1's with a lot of reading vocab knowledge who can't understand a thing in Anime without subs.
Knowing 10,000 vocab words to passing a test and recognizing words and their meaning in context through listening are completely different skillsets.
You're 100% right. It'll definitely take more than just knowing the vocab, I just wanted to outline roughly how much vocab knowledge is required. The importance of listening ability will be covered in a future video 😘

@@TokuyuuTV I think the 逆 is true also. You don't need to wait till N1 to start understand anime without subs. I'm at N3 now, and I can say I can fairly understand 80-90% of the anime I've watched. Only anime with complex sci fi plots require me to use subs. Even then I get 50-60% of the plotline.
It ultimately boils down to the type of vocab you're exposed to. For e.g. I understand 0 Japanese politics (neither do I intend to since I have no interest in it).
Investing in listening and speaking related about your topic of interest from a advanced beginner to pre-intermediate level is the best (and fun) way to learn in my opinion.
(Unless you're after certificates that is..😛)
@@meetthemasters754 damnnn super impressive you can understand that much of the anime you watch - I was definitely not at that level when I was N3! Interesting point about focusing on learning certain 'subjects' of vocab, definitely true that a particular genre will tend to use the same set of vocab. Could be a great way for people to expedite the process of being able to watch their favourite anime 😃

I just am curious, I want to master N5. But there are more Kanji in the vocab than in the 80 N5 Kanji. Shouild I concentrate on both Vocab and coresponding Kanji? Or focus on the vocab first? We need more videos from you!
great question! to pass n5, you don’t need to know those kanji that are associated with the vocab but not included in the 80 kanji for n5.

What about trying to split in vocab a sentence? If I try to learn vocab reading manga I always get stuck easily because words are mixed with grammar, or different ways to speak.

Yeah it can be difficult to figure out what a word is when it's conjugated and mixed with the rest of the sentence. Definitely make sure you are studying grammar too, because that will make it easier to identify the root word. And some Japanese-English dictionary apps can tell you the root word if you type in a conjugated version.

The one I use is called 'takoboto' (Android). For iphone my friend uses 'shirabejisho'! Definitely really nice being able to write out the sentence in the app 😩👌

I dont learn kanji well and basically I don't have systematic way of learning. I did like you said which i just try to find every meaning of words i dont know. Recently i used the word やってるinstead of やれる because i was a bit confused with its conjugation and my Japanese friends chuckled at me. It wasnt until the next day that when i Google it, i found out its a slang for something inappropriate HAHAHHAHAHA GOD THE EMBARRASSMENT
LMAOOOOO i love that, that’s definitely a very common word with very dangerous consequences if used incorrectly 😂😂 glad to know you have japanese friends to practice with tho! that’s definitely a privilege 😌 dont be afraid to keep making the embarrassing mistakes because using the language is the fastest way to retain it!

I think you here now, congrats. I am here too, near Fuji, I love it here, i love the food, esp sweets! Got here by marriage! Proxy marriage! I wasn't even in Japan when hubby married me here. I am half-Japanese but my mother did not register my birth on koseki and she would not help me get Child of a Japanese National. She told me I am American only and should get an American meal ticket hubby in the US like she did. I did the opposite I married a Japanese man and I am his meal ticket lozl! I have relatives in Tokyo but my mother is estranged from them, they don't speak English. I will learn Japanese with your tips! :D
P.S. As kid my mom wouldn't even let us eat Japanese food, she would say Japanese food is only for her. She hit us and whipped us and terrorized us a lot too and because of that I hated anything Japanese until I saw Texan in Tokyo on UA-cam (they no longer make videos) and I saw how cute and sweet they were and I then got a tsunami Japanese fever and got here. I can eat Japanese food now everyday and all day long and I am so Japanese food happy! My Japanese hubby often says "Good appetite! Sugoi!" Oh God its like Japanese food heaven here!

Does the pitch accent in au change with the Kanji?
From what I looked up, the pitch accent doesn’t change! But you should be able to tell based on the context and how the speaker conveys their emotion (for positive vs negative meetings)😝

If you’re using anki, I recommend 5-10 new words a day. With the vocab for review stacking up over time, i think it’s the perfect amount! I touch on this as well in my ‘How to become fluent in Japanese from ZERO’ video as well!

There is a sentence in Demon Slayer: Ore wa Kami, Omaera wa Gomi (I'm god, you're trash.) If you pay attend to subtitles when watching anime sometimes that makes help you. :)
I am learning Japanese as well, mostly through self learning.
For people who are language enthusiasts, I suggest to try out Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. In fact, it is the oldest writing system in the world. It is the most phonetically accurate language, unambiguous with no two possible interpretations of the same word. And why learn Sanskrit? It opens your world to a lot of philosophy, art, poetry, music, culture & spirituality from one if the oldest and scientific religious traditions in the world.
