  • Today I'm experimenting with some new techniques. I'm playing a polka transcribed from a hummel player called Ottar Hyll. The Swedish hummel, for those who don't know, is a plucked instrument that you play with a pick, with the instrument laying down on a table. The instrument was popular in big parts of Europe, especially during the 18th century, but its popularity died off during the 19th century. The instrument is closely related to what they in Norway call "Langleik", but the hummel tradition here in Sweden is nowhere near as well documented as the one for the Norwegian Langleik.
As a guitarist, I've practiced immitating and translating from a lot of instruments, especially violin and the Finnish Kantele. So far during this March, the melodies have been transcibed from either violin or accordeon. This is my first attempt at trying to catch the essence of the Hummel on the guitar, with the drone strings and the parallell thirds. I hope you enjoy! There will be a few more, and I'm looking forward to learning through this experience.
