It’s safe to say that if you write a song like this, perform all the instruments and mix the song yourself, then to have it be embraced all over the world, that you have achieved something rare and special in your music career.

It's such a great interlude for the album, a really sudden but nice separation from the heavy and interesting sounds of the songs in the half before it with it finishing and then continuing that sound with Cause I'm a Man and the rest of the album (maybe not New Person, Same Old Mistakes, but that's a great finisher). Honestly a perfectly crafted album and one of the best out there.

Absolutely. Tho as much as I love Tame Impala....I might be a bigger fan of Pond, very much the sister band to Tame Impala. Nick Allbrook is a brilliant vocalist and performer. They have a bunch of albums....the early stuff is very spazzy cosmic psych-rock. But it's their album The Weather, and the 2 after that, where I think they hit on a genuinely genius sound and approach to music. If anyone hasn't heard Pond...check out all the singles to The Weather, Tasmania, and 9. The singles are all excellent and actually very good representations of the band at their best.

  • @avedic
    @avedic 8 місяців тому +5

I love how this song develops over time.
It starts off immediately catchy and effective.....instantly iconic from go.
But my favorite part is basically the final chorus that goes till the end of the song. The chords are slightly different than the first go around....and there's something about that simple chord progression that feels so good. It's like The Police and Walking on the Moon.....the chorus chords in that are just TOO good. Or the 4 chords that make up the chorus to Purity Ring's Obedear. It makes me re-fall in love with music when an artist can take 3 or 4 chords you've heard a million times before, and make them sound like magic.

He said the bass line is actually guitar going through an octave or pitch shift pedal and a boss blues driver pedal (that's from an interview, I believe it's like a version where he wins song of the decade). Then I believe there's a dry baseline underneath that. To play live tho you can get pretty close to the tone with a blues driver or bass overdrive pedal and boost the high mids

  • @vzmol

What makes the bass so great? I think can answer that. It's in the front - the whole song is built on it. It's a nice melody, but nothing too exotic - everyone can catch up. It's steady, juicy and just so enjoyable sounding on its own, but as other instruments join, that's where the magic happens. They compliment the bass. Drums synchronise at one point and make this "clapping" feel, but there is no clapping - just joined silence between beats - and that is soo satisfying! The glassy sounds also compliment the bass. The guitar is mostly fill, again to provide balance to the song. All calms down when vocals came in, so... yeah, you talked about that, it's a totally awesome song! Loved the breakdown - as always :)

First time I ever heard this was you all’s cover with Dave Koz at the end. I immediately had to look up this group.

Dungen needs to be discussed more when it comes to the sound of Tame Impala; a lot of their sound was lifted pretty directly especially early on. Both artists are amazing and Parker has developed his own great thing now, but the influence of Dungen should be more publicly discussed.

Dungen will always be my favorite of the two. Dungen seems to have more heart and a purer sound with much less processing.

Another bassline that stands out as a 'hook' is the one in 'Jenny Was a Friend of Mine' by The Killers

I had forgotten about that Amy Grant track. That came out while I was in high school and it was all over the radio.

Beautiful Song, but the thing i love the most is seeing you two discussing every detail of what you're listening to, even with no hosts. Keep doing what you do guys!!

The really incredible thing is how did this song stay obscure for so long? It's killin' it on the radio right now! I thought it was a new song.
The VIDEO...!!! The video is CRAAAZY...!!!
You don't see that one coming. I put it up there with Jimmy Eats World video for The Center, in how you don't expect that song to have that type of video.

    bom-buh-bom
    durr-durr
    bom
    durr durr-durr-durr
The thing I love most about the song is (let’s see if I can explain this in text!) how the *bom-buh-bom* and the *bom* are different after the filter is taken off the drums.
So, in the first four bars, the whole bass-line (actually a guitar with octave-down effect) is the same sound. Then Kevin changes the sound of *some* of the notes, either by punching in a real bass or by using EQ or effects just in those specific notes.

If i keep watching these Deepwax videos, next thing i know I'm going to finally own that keyboard, learn to play it properly, put the time in to become proficient and study music theory seriously and completely. Stumbling onto Scary Pockets, Pomplamoose and Deepwax in the last couple of months has reminded me that i really, really love music on a deeper level than I've been honest with myself about. I made a mistake not following through on at least a serious music hobby if not diving all the way in.
You are so inspiring and so full of joy for what you do, thank you so much for all the amazing things you have shared with all of us fans!
