hey guys, great episode but in the past there were a few more snippits of the actual song. now i find myself not rembering how the song went and a bit of extra context is rarely a bad idea. thanks for the top tier content and the songwriting lessons.
It's definitely for copyright, but it also kind of defeats the purpose of the whole video. Maybe they should do more artists who aren't going to issue copyright strikes, like Vulfpeck.
I really hope harmony is making a comeback in pop music because it has been sorely missed. I love the way Harry uses it on this new album. Harmony has always been my favorite element in any song
If you haven't yet, please, check out his previous works, like Ever Since New York from debut album, Cherry, To Be So Lonely, Canyon Moon from Fine Line - all have great harmonies. Fine Line the song sounds almost symphonic it has crazy instrumental harmonies as well. I love how his boyband legacy gave him this fresh spin on his solo sound, it sounds timeless, I love it a lot
That “In My Life”/plagal cadence/musical vocabulary segment was beautiful. It solidified my motivation to improve my ear training, not as an improvising musician, but as a songwriter. This show is the only one I check for on UA-cam, and this is why. I am your audience!
I love that you guys did a harmonic analysis on this. I found the fact that Harry added the V7 of vi at the very end of the chorus so cool and inspiring as a way to add energy to the progression.
Loved your break down. Please do more of his songs from 'Harry's House'. I would assume you've heard Harry's first two albums, 'Harry Styles & 'Fine Line'. I'd like to hear what you think on those too.
Love Harry Styles (especially his 1st and 3r album) AND Rina Sawayama (Sawayama, the album, was one of my fav albums in 2020... the use of different genres 👩🏼🍳😘, the nostalgia, soooo good. Love Dynasty, Who's Gonna Save U Now?, Snakeskin, STFU) so this video was a treat y'all 🥰
Harry's been using harmonies, vocal and instrumental in all his solo music, his Fine Line album was released in 2019 2 years before SilkSonic was born and it still reflecs the 70th vibe)) I love his creative decisions so much. He's a music geek and you can totally hear i from most of his music. I wish you'd dissect his song called "She" from previous album. It is an unusual song for a pop record I'd say but it's one of fans favourite. Generally, I just adore this format and your enthusiasm is so contageous, makes me wanna buy a piano asap and follow up everything you were discussing here!))) Very informative, thank you so much about it!!
Maybe it’s the «vibe» of the 70s in sound, just like the visual aesthetic. But that’s just like the filter on your camera compared to the real harmonic legacy of the 70s especially representer by R&B artists like Stevie Wonder and EW&F. Styles is a musical midget in this respect, while he may have other qualities.
Holy moly! Have been listening to Switched on Pop for ever and had no idea what Charlie looked like! Great to put a face on his voice!!! YAY! Thanks for this episode, LOVE Harry.
Ok, Jack, I'm totally with you on "I Only Have Eyes For You". I've been fascinated by that song for decades. It's a brilliant composition (and arrangement) that's noticeably different from the other music of its era.
You having Charlie on was surreal to me, as i've been listening to that same voice on Switched on Pop for so many years. Much love to y'all and all the amazing guests :))
Liking the rebrand. Keep up the good work. A thought on a possible future episode would be Yellow Magic Orchestra, maybe their song Rydeen or Technopolis. These tunes are so distinctive (and a bit bonkers), plus they were just so ahead of their time. Would be a cool tune to discuss perhaps with a guest from an electronic music background.
When recording his songs Harry sings almost all of the voices himself. Rarely does anyone else sing on the recordings. Only when live does his band sing with him. His drummer is ace. You should watch a live performance of him.
I happened to have closed captions on and at about 11:55 it said "the first time that corporation gets through to the end." Took me a couple seconds to figure out he said "chord progression."
Great episode, I love the focus on the songwriting and harmony etc. I do enjoy when people tell stories about the recording but the talk on melodies, harmony etc is particularly interesting to me
Such a great episode guys! We learn something about songwriting/composition, arrangement, voicings etc. with every segment. Great to have Charlie on as a guest. As with some of the commenters, I really enjoy the material they cover on "Switched on Pop". And... the song recommendations at the end are great! The Flamingoes Warren/Dubin song is a classic - drenched in reverb with great vocals. Emmitt Rhodes is another inspired choice. He was such a talented songwriter, arranger, vocalist and engineer. Comparisons to Paul McCartney were appropriate. A true artist!
Hi, The last twenty years or so I had multiple issues with popmusic on the radio. But this artist is great! When I heard ‘As it was’ for the first time on the radio, it felt the same as being a young kid in the early ‘80’s! So perhaps popmusic isn’t over... 🖖
I think the "distorted cheesy 80s brass" thingy is reminiscent of the iconic "Orch Hit" patch in the Fairlight CMI. Like a newer, fresher take on that well-known sound. Think "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", for example.
Loved(!) the format from the very beginning and particularly enjoyed the theoretical and technical exploration and interpretation of songwriting of the songs in this one, very much looking forward to the next videos in the new branding♥️
Did you guys notice how the bridge of "As It Was" sounds like "Ball of Confusion" by the Temptations. There's also a part that has a similar progression to Sia's "Chandelier" "But I'm holding on for dear life Won't look down, won't open my eyes"
The reason why the song feels long is because there are so many things that happened. It makes you feel like you went through a whole journey. I try to do tht with my own music. If you are dedicating 3min of your life to listen to me. I want to give you appetizer, main course and dessert
I would love to see you guys tackle some concept albums and the relation between musical story telling and the synergy of lyrics. Highly recommend The Dear Hunter - Antimai.
I guess it makes sense that your first subject under the Dead Wax moniker is a guy who was born after wax/vinyl was pretty much dead thanks to the CD. 😊 Nice work as always, guys.
Love the rebranding! I know it might be kind of out of your wheelhouse, but I've been listening to System of a Down a lot lately and would really love a deep dive into the song structure. Your guy's perspective is always enlightening and SOAD might be a great challenge. 😄❤
@@darthwhit Omg, yes! In my case, when I listened LNT the first time it reminded me of "Time (Clock of the Heart)" by Culture Club, especially the chorus.
I really hope that there will be more skilled musicians in the future who are able to write good melodies/harmonies/chord progressions, because most music of the last 15years was kinda boring and only beat based
Jack have you heard Art Garfunkel’s version? I’d love to hear the channels thoughts on songs from Harry’s Fine Line as well. “Grapejuice” from Harry’s House was giving me a mash up between Wings “Let ‘Em In” and The Spinners “Rubberband Man”!
Talking of harmony in pop music, I'd love to hear you guys talk about a Depeche Mode song, like "Enjoy the Silence" or "Everything Counts". Martin Gore is (to me) a master of inserting weird chords into a pop song.
Could you do a video discussing some top musical theatre songs and what makes them feel so epic? Songs like One Day More, Defying Gravity, This Is Me or All That Jazz? Get a Broadway/West End performed like Shoshana Bean? I think it would be fascinating.
I think „As it was“ sounds so familiar from the first note because it has so much vibe from „a-ha“ in it (well… at least to me because I grew up in the 80/90ies and I think you both also can relate 😁)
Hey guys, amazing episode as always. For future episodes you should listen to Jordan Rakei, he's a incredible songwriter and musician with a bunch of interesting influences like D'Angelo, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley all convine into cohesive soulful/odd time sound.
Speaking of dead wax, sometime in the 80s/90s a couple groups added messages in the dead wax section. Sadly, I do not have any in my vinyl collection so I cannot remember which ones. Does anyone have examples? Is memory just faulty?
"[Harry Styles] and Silk Sonic. If there's a third, I'm gonna say three trees make a forest here and I'm gonna start celebrating the return of harmony". I have no musical education beyond just watching youtubers like yall, but I think About Damn Time by Lizzo sounds like it has interesting enough harmony to fit in the "post-Silk Sonic pop harmony" trend? Or maybe I'm just being fooled by the CHIC stylings.
I would love to see you talk about some japanese funk artist like casiopea, T-square, Masayoshi Takanaka. Recently I listen to more of that stuff and seeing you talk about this music would be really intresting.
Great episode! On "As it was" (great song nonetheless) : a big tribute to "Take on me" (chord progression is litterally the same but stretched, even the lead nods to the same rhythmic pattern)
I really rate these two songs too. Is it just me, or does Late Night Talking have a Super Tramp vibe to you? When I first heard the song it was playing through a PA and I couldn’t make out the lyrics or the age of the song, but it made me think of Super Tramp.
I find these discussions so interesting and enlightening in many ways…. Could we please have an analysis of “Next To You” by pop/funk fusion trio Dirty Loops? I think this would hit all those points perfectly-, a perfectly masterful creation between these and more genres…. Thanks! 👍
great episode as always! would love to hear you guys talk about Tame Impala/Kevin Parker. Lots of interesting production and harmony there to analyze! 🙏
You should do a couple of songs for each of his 3 albums, I'd suggest you take Watermelon Sugar and She for Fine Line (WS is such a overplayed song but I still love it and I hear a lot of cool things that don't get you bored of it). And for his debut album you should take Sign Of The Times and Carolina, also contrast songs and I really want to hear your thouhgts on that))

Probably avoiding copyright strikes
I agree on this, but I think it is also a copyright thing. So, maybe just link to the discussed songs (which they've done).
Same here
Agreed but assume it's related to copyright issues
It's definitely for copyright, but it also kind of defeats the purpose of the whole video. Maybe they should do more artists who aren't going to issue copyright strikes, like Vulfpeck.

One of best albums of the year so far, love where pop is heading. Daddy Harry's got it down
Harry is a product of a good record collection. he is a vinyl mining pastiche artist. (could use a bit of grit)
What other records would you include in best albums of 2022?

I hope so very much, too. Come on harmony.
So early where I am ,yet still gonna watch while getting ready for work , a podcast would also be wonderful, just an idea only
Nice that you noted As it Was quite fast paced for a contemporary pop song! Like 80s new wave songs - New Musik, the Shirts
The analysis really makes me appreciate music I ordinarily would not think to pay attention to! 🎶
Love H, I loved the episode! Please react more often to Harry Styles.
These music guys love Harry's song writing, talking about his "chord progression" & "instrumentation."
