Billie's brother is (F)INNEAS [B.D. 7/30/1997]. FINNEAS was the solo songwriter of "Ocean Eyes", "When the Party's Over" and 4 other early songs. I'm 68 and I really enjoyed Billie's [B.D. 12/18/2001] early material, and her "Happier Than Ever" (album) I think that if a person listens to FINNEAS's solo work and then listens to the song's with Billie's name attached to them - where FINNEAS is producer, does the backing vocals, and co-writes the songs - many will choose the Billie/Finneas material over Finneas's solo work. What is the intangible something Billie brings - whatever it is, it is why her name is attached to "their" music - it could be "imagination", "pathos", her sultry vocals - I'm not sure. "Ocean Eyes" and "Where the Party's Over" - written by Finneas alone are, in my mind, beautiful; I don't think they would have turned out the same if FINNEAS sang them - Billie's voice is more on the edge - sometimes, and I'm a huge Billie admirer, I've been hesitant to listen, thinking she's going to fail, but she doesn't, and she hasn't - I believe it's the vulnerability in her voice that is the difference. Also, I think it frustrates many reactors, who are (almost) annoyed that someone with a limited vocal instrument, has such results.
Hi Mitch, that intangible quality of Billie's is everything, in my opinion. To be honest, I'm sick and tired of people who 1. Try to explain away Billie's vocals in technical terms, and usually in a dismissive way (this is irrelevant) and 2. Who insist that Finneas is behind all of the good things in her music (you didn't do this, btw). Firstly, Billie's raw, live vocals are now my favorite ever sound (either inside or outside of music), And secondly, I have listened to all of Finneas' music many times, and while I think it is technically excellent and I appreciate that a lot of Billie fans enjoy it, I do not like it at all. In fact, I find it incredibly boring to listen to. The following is an oversimplification for sure, but I think of Finneas as the craftsman, and Billie as the artist. Billie brings way more to the table than "just" the vocals.
@@horsehollerer thank you for your reply. I am so glad there's another Billie admirer who believes that Billie is on another plane with her gifts. I also watch her live shows and all of the one from New Orleans - incredible! I have on Instagram, Facebook and emails [ email address on things ordered from Billie] thanked her for being absolutely authentic, true to herself, and shared with her an adage from Paracelsus "Be not another if thou canst be thyself". I listen to Billie - I am older, and I love her music. Since FINNEAS wrote the 2 songs I mentioned as well as "Watch", "6ft. Under", "My Strange Addiction", ["Bored" is Bille (at 13), Finneas and I think Aron Forbes (not sure)]..... FINNEAS has special gifts as well. But Billie is a unique artist - I believe FINNEAS also believes that - I'm guessing you have seen the documentary (it's very good) and the interview (conversation) led by Dave Grohl, with Billie and R. J. Cutler, from Jan. 30, 2022 is really fun [about 48 minutes in length]

There are great Bossa Nova musicians in the world and one even played this very song in Billie's Disney concert at the Hollywood Bowl. But those are not the same as Billie's take, which is not a faithful reproduction of the genre. She made her own version, just as she has with other genres, trap, rock, hip hop, etc.
My parents loved jazz music. There's a good singer who made a Bossa Nova CD. I remember falling in love with a beat JUST like this. It's about that craving for someone. I wrote poetry about it and it embarrasses my dad but he still understands it. Just because we're adults and have those moments craving a memory or for someone to do to you...that uh, truly ecstatic experience again.
I really live the jazzy influences in their music. This one is one of my favourites. Would you react to Billie singing Fever and Is that all there is from the Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra Tribute show? I think you will enjoy it

I've always loved Billie's music and I agree with you about the "Bossa Nova" beat conjuring up feelings of beaches etc. I have the weirdest reaction to Diana Ankudinova singing "Падает снег" or "Snow falls" against visuals of snow falling all around her outside - but if I close my eyes, I'm on the warm beaches of Cannes, S.
