Personnel, Formation, motion/shift, pass protection, route combo. That’s the sequence of most pass play calls.

makes sense to have stuff in an order.

it is ridiculous for a coach to call pass protection, or gap attack to begin with....thats a QBs job. Play calling is ridiculous in general, it resembles nomenclature of organic molecules...it is marginally psychotic.

Exactly, and great point. I think most of us laymen need to visually see these wordy plays written down to soak it in. It’s a heck of a lot of info to juggle around in your mind, especially if you never played the game.

What’s even crazier is the qb is listening to the coach telling him the play through a radio in his helmet and now he has to repeat everything word for word to 10 other guys in a huddle. Not to mention if you’re on the road and the crowd noise is crazy

A play call even at the NFL level isnt all that complicated if you play a skill position and know what to listen for. It's just code for each position/group saying who should be where and what to do. You basically are just listening for your position's "codename" and then the route and you will know where to line up and what to do. With that being said...this would be a NIGHTMARE for me if I was a QB and had to know ALL of that information over multiple formations, personnel groupings, and routes. Not to mention having to read the defense and make adjustments. NFL QB's, especially the great ones, are processing so much information so fast it blows my mind. Even the "bad" ones are better than 99.99% of QB's on the planet. It's crazy!

This is so true. I played on 4 teams, 6 OCs and play calling is completely insane 😂 and you have to learn about 250 diff plays and remember them all. As a WR, the good ones will learn 4 diff wr positions which means you have to learn the terminology of 1000 diff plays on average. I know they jocks are dumb but I've had engineer and doctor friends who can't do it lol

The comment at the end was classic. The NFL is all about percentages. Edelman just prove it. There are about 70 plays during a game you gotta score on 3 or plays and the game is over...

After all those hundreds of hours of practice and memorization, just to get 11 people to move perfectly in sync, now add the NFL's predetermined scripts on top of that.
People who think the NFL is fake have never played an organized game of football with any kind of formal team.
