- EP31 - Lets talk MONEY, or better: Not spending Money. In a big restoration like this one, keeping costs down is essential if your budget is not unlimited. Let me walk you through how we do it. Who knows, it might come in handy,
Schoener Tijgerhaai (Tigershark) started life in 1944 as a canadian built tugboat and she has been in my family for almost 50 years. Together with my dad, I am rebuilding this beautiful sailing ship, to get her ready for new adventures!

Ep 31 - Want To Start a BIG Project On a Limited Budget? Watch This!
Great catchup. Would love it to be longer.
Love how Dad always smiles coyly at the camera!
Somehow he still never expects it :)
Prachtig allemaal! Tijgerhaai krijgt de staat van een TallShip! Johan
Bedankt!
You guys are doing a great job!
Very enjoyable to see your progress!
Be mindful if adding new cables to not stack too many in the cable trays. Ship fires have happened from that exact reason.
Limiting cable per tray, using more trays is the solution.
Reusing older parts is after my own heart. It's like a hidden gold mine.
As always, the narration is crisp, informative, and articulate. Thank you.
Thanks! We sure will keep that in mind! Nobody wants to see their boat go up in flames :)
@@tigersharkboatworks ship fire scares me more than foundering or swamping or anything else. I'm not easily scared.
Navy vessels and container ships have been lost due to fires started in cable trays packed too heavy with too many cables. Routing new cables using new trays is the solution.
Also, that the insulation in your overhead is rated for heat you expect on your travels.
I mean not to be overly concerned because of ignorance. While you have large yacht experience, I don't know what that includes. I doubt over stacking cable trays.
On older vessel, more cables as it occurs, then using established routing may result in too many cables in tray. I hope not for Tigerjai.
There's no double stacking on the boat so far. But more importantly, we don't allow our cables to run hot.
All cables are oversized, so have less resistance and less heat, and could withstand more current than the machines they're powering require. And every cable is fused against overcurrent and short circuit. I doubt anything will become warmer than 50°C at any given moment.
@@tigersharkboatworks Sorry, I did get carried away. I do remember that one fire was traced to the terminal blocks. So, not the cables but the connections.
Thank you for your forbearance.
You guys work at an amazing speed!
Thanks! We'd like to get it done somewhere within the coming 2 years :) but to be fair, it is 3 weeks work jammed into one video
Great job guys! I love the way you think and work. Repurposing and saving old quality materials and machines is an excellent way not only to ave money but to actively support the releave of the environment. Also older machinery often ist so much higher quality than new stuff as it originally was made to last. I prefer restoring or just servicing old equipment over buying new crap just because it seems cheap. Best whishes from Germany
All so true, thanks!
Goed werk Thijs
Amazing progress and I love to see you reusing and repurposing existing materials. Your beautiful ship is coming together so well.
Awesome effort. Enjoying the rebuild. Cheers.
not perfect is called patina, you do great work, hope I can sail on her some day!
Patina, that's the word I was looking for! I'm sure we can welcome you aboard some day :)
I've been using reclaimed materials on my boat quite a bit myself. My bulwark stanchions will be made from white oak taken from shipping pallets
Very nice! I checked out your channel, it's a beautiful boat that's worth saving!
@@tigersharkboatworks Thanks!
👍!!!
👍
Did you say your vessel has Canadian history? I have a 60 ft steel schooner named SV Spice of Life in Vancouver Canada.
I am also doing a refit.
Yess it does! It was built in Trenton during WW2 as a tugboat :)
Nu komt het wel heel dichtbij om te gaan varen👍
Tot aan het dok in Franeker moet in ieder geval wel lukken. Dan zijn we voor dit jaar tevreden :)
@@tigersharkboatworks 👍
Great update 2x👍
Ship is looking fine, good luck with the survey.
Thank you!
Iedere keer weer leuk om naar te kijken!
Coffee holders are extremely important!!
I know right!?
I hope you continue to put out your channel I love it so much.
Blessings
We are not planning on stopping anytime soon! Thanks!
👍👍👍👍👍
It's gonna be interesting to see how you get the new generators into the engine room...
We have a special secret entrance for that. That's all I'm gonna say about that :)
I my trade, it’s new codes that make equipment obsolete. Spending money to satisfy a new code, and not get added reliably is a hard sell.
Ah yeah that sucks. Probably also what happened with some of the tools of the old shipyard.
Such a great boat. What is the hull thickness.
Thanks! It's 12m near the boxkeel and 5mm below the Gunwale. Everything in between is something in between :)
Hey bro, what is the length of the boat???
It's 30,5 m (100ft)
