Funcom has never been good at designing their combat system. They’re pretty good at everything else, but combat is one of those areas where they struggle a lot.
As many people are mentioning, the combat appears a bit lackluster. For me though, almost equally important is the SOUND. The sound of Villeneuve's Dune films is visceral, heavy, and impactful. The opening sequence in part 2 with the Harkonnen squad being picked off is a great example. The sound of the lasgun firing when the sniper shoots the sand compactor, the impacts of maula pistol darts piercing the Harkonnen soldier's armor; it was all startlingly intense and powerful. It really felt like deadly weapons were being used, and created a visceral and sudden feeling surrounding combat that many pieces of media in the action genre lack for me. Comparatively, the sounds of gunfire on display here are more like peashooters to me; it doesn't feel like the character is shooting a weapon of war. That lack of feedback is maintained with unremarkable impact sounds both on the player character receiving fire, and on npc's taking fire. I understand that this game is still in development; not everything shown is in its final state, and things can change. I also don't want to have unrealistic expectations for what truly appears to be a massive game Funcom is creating. That being said, I notice a lot of people mentioning that combat looks unsatisfying, and I believe that improving SFX to better reflect the impactful and intense soundscape of combat created in the films could work wonders to improving the overall feel of combat, which in turn could help in grounding the player more into the world.
Need to concentrate on making the melee combat a lot more impactful and fleshed out. And the gun-play seems very basic. Everything else sounds great though.
I completely agree with the comment section, one thing holding conan exiles from being a great game was the combat being a little dry and lackluster, if this can be made to feel more engaging, such as adding a camera shake, a vibration when hitting or hit, punchy sounds it will all add to the immersion. Good combat will make or break this game as it appears everything else has been polished to a much higher standard than with conan exiles
I love hearing him talk about the game bc he’s so into it, it’s hard to find someone so into their own video game when they aren’t indie, and swing it is beautiful and gives me a lot of hope for mainstream games, it also really helps she is one of the best interviewers I’ve seen and it’s awesome, plz keep it up funcom as it may get others to follow
Just adding to the melee comments. Please, as everyone is saying, take specific care to alter the animations and feedback on the melee combat to make it more weighty and satisfying to play. It is clear from the multiple showcases of the game that this is the primary weakness. Getting this right will really bring the game together. Don't miss this opportunity!
I really hope we'll see other houses or minor houses as political alternatives to the great houses and more disputes in the landsraad. Being able to side with The Emperor, or smugglers, or fremen factions would layer the depth of faction interactions in the world as well. This game has awesome potential.
Considering how almost all their MMOs have pretty lackluster combat, for instance their last MMO, Secret World, I doubt the combat in this game will be that great. Really unfortunate since their MMOs, particular Secret World, was great in almost all aspects except combat.
What ends up making me stop playing mmos and survival games is lack of progression systems. I want to be invested in the world and have my time being valued. Not just grinding mats.
The developers and shareholders don't know it yet, but in its current state, this game will receive at best "mixed reviews" on Steam, and after a year, due to a lack of players, the servers will be shut down. Just like that Amazon MMO... what was it called again? Exactly, no one remembers. Please don`t rush it, take your time!
As many people say here. I was expecting from this game some badass combat, acrobatic melee fight. This could make people eager to start the game to stick a knife in beautiful style.
I love the idea, im just skeptical as so much look placeholder. The animations are stiff and feels wierd, there is no heft or weight to the weapons or sound design, and performance even in your own footage looks bad. Seems to be both low FPS and high input lag as well as stutters. Considering this is a early 2025 release, you either need to delay it, or have this footage be 1 year old.
Having some factions that you can join that have their own goals of playing the two combative sides against would be fascinating and VERY dune and allow for a diverse ecology of playstyles.
That ability that teleports your character to melee range, looks like it takes just as much time to cast and then for the animation to finish, as it would take to just run to the enemy. Other than that, looks amazing.
What do you expect? It’s a survival game first and everything else comes after that. I have never seen a survival/base builder game with a particularly good combat system
Honestly I think it looks fine, from a PVP perspective. Can't have the combat too heavy, imagine 3 dudes taking turns kneeing a solo in the face and he can't do anything back. They have to consider pve and pvp in the combat
@@Michael_G980 Rust has a satisfying recoil system with good gun design and a headshot sound that is *chefs kiss*. Last Oasis had a good melee combat system with a large skill ceiling. Even DayZ in all it's unpolished glory has more likeable gunplay.

It feels this game have to much guild (PvP) focus. It feels like it will be very hard to get best gear solo, duo or group wise, when all spice will be controlled by guilds. What makes the game not so linear if there is a main story!?
It’s a sandbox, there will be things to do regardless. So if you are a more solo focused player, you have to learn how to survive in the economy by providing something other than spice.. but as like the real world, having more than one person will make your life easier.
@@MeleeCombatEnjoyerthey call it a sandbox mmo, I suggest you look into what that has meant historically. For instance Star Wars Galaxies was a sandbox mmo. It’s really only limited to your imagination and the mechanics they provide.

It looks very alpha for a game that will be released soon. Sound, animation, combat feedback are all missing. A big vehicle falls into the sand but the sand doesn't react and again a box comes out of the sand but it comes there suddenly like Casper. Then at 15:51 someone attacks us, I expected the character to shake a little and his face to change but he moves like a refrigerator. Also the character's walking animation is very bad, Carl's walk from GTA is more heroic.
Adding to the sound design comments, I'd like to point out that audio mixing and especially mastering is also rather flat and dull. There seems little to no bass response for large set pieces like a sandworm or vehicles and shooting and impacts lack definition and sound overcompressed in a soundscape that seems overall undercompressed. Environmental audio effects for weather or buildings also seem lacking. Please keep working on the sound design and soundscape of the game! It definitely has potential to be a fun multiplayer Dune experience.
