Welcome to the Mediterranean mate…where the most bastards fishes live :) At least now we have parrotfishes, which are amazing with pasta. So you will never go back home empty-handed. I enjoy your videos so much! Well done!
This is awesome. I am looking to retire to sicily shortly and I have been so excited to get back into spear fishing. I got into it while stationed in Hawaii while in the Army and have missed it!
thank for the visit, this video confirms that the fish in sicily are more active than others, watching other videos I didn't understand how people manage to get so close to the fish in other parts of the world, now I understand. we have the most frightened fish in the world 🤣
The oratta, or orada as we call them are the most careful fish you can encounter in the Adriatic, you either totally surprise them or you don't get them at all....
Such a great footage as always I would only go in that cave if I had gills About the bream fish... Here in Croatia, I just swim and then when I spot the fish I do not look at the fish straight forward from the surface. Just a little with side eye so I can get close, dive in and with it starts to swim away I shoot Because I can not stay underwater for more then 40 sec on 5 meter depth haha
Good to see you posting Sir. I have to let you know I just got back from two weeks in Alsaka. I had to use your tag line while there a couple times.... Hali butt. Only got to dive two days but got a couple that way and the rest on rod and real. Loaded up on halibut , 3 kinds of salmon ,rockfish, and rainbow trout.
@@DanielMann ... didn't try to but there were so many at the mouths of the rivers you could of gotten at least 3 or 4 with a well placed shot and the right gun. Didn't shoot any big butts, 85lbs was the biggest but it was a blast.
Daniel one of the things that could help you a lot in chasing those dentex is to keep the gun hidden next to your body while you swim down, and once close to the bottom keep it hidden by the rocks until you are ready to shoot.
Well done Daniel on a really amazing edit. Fantastic job on putting your story together. Daniel just for some prospective how deep are you diving. The water is just so clear so it makes it so hard to judge. Well done mate and keep them coming.
For sea bream, once you're sure it sees you, you have to back off and hide behind a rock or posedonia, so it will definitely be curious and run to you. Trick that I have learned when I was ten
I love your videos bro, when I can't go in the water I watch your video as entertainment and your commentary over your videos a super professional 👌. You ever dive off an oil rig ?
Daniel it may sound funny but I discovered it also very late for my freediving experience namely using hawaiian sling in Med bring very impressive results I got much more big fish for least amount of time and effort with sling than with speargun and also much more big octopuses with gaff rather than trident man when I was young I always considered all these primitive 😂 had always sophisticated new equipments still do so but as said those recent 10 years or so resulted in much more fruitful hunting experience.Dive safe mate take care.
Shot a few giltheads in the med but never ever even seen a dentex while spearfishing there. I suppose the only way to have a chance shooting dentex is lying a long time waiting and being just enough concealed to make them curious. Great vid Daniel, I’ve been to Scopello, the places around there are stunning.
Interesting that this summer I would have seen a few hundred dentex. Lots of small ones but also some massive ones. Only saw big giltheads a handful of times.
Amazing video Daniel !! That conger is a bit too small to be caught, with that size you will only be eating bones ahaha , i always make sure they are at least 7/8 kilos but good job !! cheers from portugal
Hello Daniel, I regularly watch your videos and always enjoy them, so keep them coming please! I'm from South Devon and have been spearfishing for two years now, I'm currently in Scopello, Sicily! I'm on holiday with my gf and have been poking my head into diving shops/tours to see if anyone has any info on spearfishing but I am being met with lots of blank faces, which I thought is strange as most of my gear is from Italy! But they keep saying sorry I don't know we just offer scuba diving tours, Have you got any tips on where to look? Cheers Tom
Hi Tom, you'd probably have more luck if you go to the spearfishing store in Palermo. However I'm not sure many places would offer spearfishing tours. You'd pretty much have to get your own gear and try it out or find a local!
Once again, these are great footage composed into a very entertaining and beautiful video! I'm getting bad wanderlust and can't wait to try my luck in Corsica in 6 weeks. Keep up the good work!
Very curious to see how you did here in Puglia, but I guess it was not the top season probably to be around here. Would have been nice to see you casually walking around anyway
Awesome man, I've loved every single video of yours, and have learnt so much so quick, I see you've been busy in my homeland NZ with the wettie team, really hoping you'll be doing a video of your visit?? Are you using a DSLR or a mirrorless camera for your out of water footage, it looks bloody so good🤙
Awesome video! Looking forward to the next one :) Question: Do you bring all of your equipment when you travel? I'm guessing that your weightbelt must take up a lot of the allowed weight of your suitcase 😅 Or do you check-in an extra bag for your stuff?
Hi Daniel, Castellammare is beautiful place, this is where I began Freediving. I am going to Ionian sea for sailing and freediving next week so we will be spearfishing also. I find in Mediterranean you need to dive at least 30+m for decent size fish. How deep did you dive in this trip? Greetings from Tenerife! 🤘
Hi Pavol, I dived the Mediterranean all summer and it’s certainly not the case you need to be at least 30m. I shot fish from 8-30m. In this video the deepest was about 26m on the cave with spiny lobsters but the dentex were above the thermocline at 13-14m.
Any tips for learning to exhale properly in a dive mask? I keep exhaling, involuntarily, through my nose just a bit and end with a small mask leak after the first 20 seconds or so.
ohhh... you should have stayed there. It is very beautiful and theres good fish aswell. But maybe next time ;). I am looking forward for your next video!!
Italy seems beautiful but difficult. they do make really good spearfishing equipment. have you ever spearfished in california? its easy to me but i only know spearfishing in southern california.
Hey Daniel, just curious about the amount of weight you are using when you are in Norway with that thick rubber on? Between the neoprene and the additional weight, are you dive time affected greatly?
Hey Christopher, you balance the two out so it’s not that bad. However the thicker suit is harder to move in so you get tired more easily. You’re also not doing super long dives in Norway so not that much of a problem.
@@DanielMann thank you very much for the info, very appreciated. Was diving in 7mil on the weekend. They are restrictive for sure. Thanks again. ~ chris
@@DanielMann I got to the 60m plateau on my 2 week instructor course in 1997 with the course director as we went to the blue hole in gozo..the others stopped short lol
I was wondering how long you can hold your breath for and whats an average dive time? Do you work on breathing exercises and do you have any tips for a longer dive.
I have a video entitled Why you can’t hold your breath longer spearfishing. I’m sure it will help you. I don’t do any exercises, just keep fit and dive as much as possible.
Goosebumps! What amazing days we had ! We will go back for a big cernia! Ciao!
Absolutely, maybe in shoulder season when there are less boats. 😁
Is it possible to harvest spiny lobster or any other lobster in sicily ? i am hoping to return to palermo next year. ciao!!!!
No, all crustaceans in Italy are protected.
Grande cristian😎
Christian appears to be a great fellow. How lucky to have him as a guide and now as a friend.
Cristian is a superb gentleman and I’m sure we’ll be diving together in the U.K. soon.
Yep, the holiday sinus. We went to Bali and were recovering from a cold, really wrecked our charter. Kudos to you for putting up with that.
Always in the back of the mind and hard to deal with at the time. I try and just eat as much fruit and vegetables as possible to stay healthy.
Always a great day when Daniel Mann releases a new video! 🔱
Visiting Sicily just got added to my bucket list.
Really worth going, the wine and food scene is fantastic.

Kind words, thank you! The best is yet to come.

In the Ionian Sea as well I had trouble with them. Also some success!
