Catching a fish in greece or croatia have MUCH more value than catching it in australia that you just dive, pick one and shoot. Here you actualy need skill. Especialy dentex, that is also a fish that i just cant put on my list.
As a Spearo in the Mediterranean , many years ago when I used to see videos of other spearos in different seas, with the easy to shoot fish, I thought it was their technique, later I realized that it was our fish in the Mediterranean that was very smart and too cautious. I shot most of the common fish here, except the dentex, I only had a chance once after aspetto to shoot at one, and missed, all other times they launch like a rocket before they come into range.
Hey man! Great footage! This is how things are here in Greece! If you dive often here you will get used to it and get more sneaky! The bad visibility (when it is not so bad that you cannot even see your tip of the speargun) some times helps because it gives you a little more cover. I Hope you had a great time here and I hope you will visit Greece again in the future! Have fun and always dive safe!
Daniel, you are so good at sharing your spearfishing experience. Congratulations. 2 comments on this one: you would need a flashlight to hunt in these locations, just forget the big caves - no grouper will stand here. You should try Corsica in June-July. Some fish restrictions there but definitely more to see and catch. Cheers
@@DanielMann OK, I didn't know. Sorry for the stupid advise. Lot of greek spearos are using torch in their video, don't they ? Regarding Corsica, you will enjoy, for sure. I do live here on Western coast.
I really enjoy looking at the Sony footage. As always: Great color grading, too! unnecessary to say, but: Great dives as well, of course :D But your cinematography is just a pleasure to watch in particular.
maybe you should try shallow spearfishing next time I think they are better than boat dives most of the time I missed a Gilthead bream this summer but in only 3 meters of water! I usually hide in seaweed and make throat sounds? or hit my gun on rocks. Maybe try that and it should attract mullet, bass, and more! always love your videos!
You need to try around 5 o'clock in the morning. It's the best moment because there are no boats around and it's not noisy underwater, you'll find plenty of fishes.
Oh man was this fun, I could watch an entire series of just diving here, even without any big fish shots, bit of a change from the oceans and seas where you can usually always get a catch, the terrain is just so fun to watch and explore! Hope you go to the Mediterranean again this summer, most rewarding place when you actually do shoot a big fish, or any fish of that kind! Love the videos and reallly enjoyed watching it !! Epicc
The Mediterranean is definitely very difficult. I've had success in the shallows mostly. I've also noticed that early morning or late afternoon is best time of day. Bagged my 1st and only dentex 2 years ago. Keep up the good work! You WILL get that dentex! Dive safe! Great video as always!
From one of the channel's biggest fans, I love that you are sharing that trip, however it wasn't one the most spearfishing successful trips. Keep it up mate ✌🏻
I was born in greece and spearfish there for a long time since i was younger and i thought it was always this difficult because i never dove somewhere else in my life
Daniel all fish in Greece, especially sea bream, mullet, sargo, sea bass, grouper and golden grouper and even dentex can be encountered at the very entrance to the water where the water debth goes from 0 to 4-8 meters as a sheer drop. Just drag yourself on the surface by grabing the rock without moving the flippers, only diving when you have seen something shining and you can use a rock formation to come around next to it. Thats where you ll see the most fish in the 0-35 meters range. I am being honest. Next time hit me up for spot suggestions in the Peloponese (south and west end of the mainland). You will need a lot of weights (though you are skinny so meh) and can use some back vest wight to reduce strain to your lower back. Finally I sould add that I am not a fan of searching holes (partially because where I grew up they are dozens of meteres deep so its kind of pointless) but those who do like doing this in Greece all, invariably, use a handheld torchlight. It is illegal and still universally adopted by all. That's Greece for you...
Hey Daniel! Lovely video. I like how selective, respectful and appreciative you are of the sea. Great stuff. I live on the island of Samos, so if you guys are ever interested in coming here, I'd love to show you around and go for a dive. I also make my own beers, so we could have a drink or two! :D Thanks for the content!
Ho Daniele, I’m use to fish in Sardinia but I think it’s pretty much similar in Greece, I can suggest you some trick 1 buy a torch to look under the rocks 2 call the fish (with the throat or with the knocking the spear on the rocks) 3 knows the area to spot the fish Good video though👍🏻
I feel your Mediterranean Pain Daniel, I've speared around the world and I'm convinced that spearfishing the Med is really something for the locals : you have to know which spots and when to visit them, the right time of day, wind directions and oh yes diving to 30+ meters helps a lot. They say the south Med is good, Morocco (I can confirm), Algeria, Libya...

I love the pictures and cinematography! Thanks for the great video Mr Mann and welcome to the Mediterranean where fish are small, clever, deep and far between. 😔
Great quality vid mate!! I don’t spear but love watching these vids to help with free/fun diving as well as seeing the beautiful underwater world that you capture. As a vegan I’m never disappointed when you don’t get the fish😁 cheers mate!
Nice video as always :) As a Mediterranean spearfisher I'd say that clear waters+summer = extremely hard to fish a dentex! BUT, definitely you have a dentex with your name in this waters.
It’s funny how hard aussies find to fish in the Mediterranean. Took a freediving instructor fishing with me in Montenegro last summer and assured him there were fish to catch. 10 minites in he was shocked to see how overfished this sea is compared to where he’d usually spearfish in Australia. The Mediterranean makes us work harder for the fish and definitely prepared me for better seas 😃
Absolutely, totally different diving. I find the same thing when Med divers come to Australia. Sharks, currents, big swell and big fish - the learning curve can be steep!
Bought some gear recently from Adreno Brisbane, talked to Wayne Judge about you haha you've been a big inspiration!! Anyway super stoked to get in the water and make some brilliant content like yourself!
Being from Rhodes I have to say the last place you dove into was the best of the three it’s a place that experienced people love shore jigging there but for the summer time you went on the wrong side of the island there are places full of fish close to the shore line but you need to know the places and believe me rhodian fishermen tell you nothing but I would suggest you next one you come in Greece visit chalkidiki and some smaller islands of northern Aegean because in Dodecanese we are full of invasive species and without local instructions you are going to fail. Love your videos keep up the good work❤️
Awesome production. I thoroughly enjoy the experience, it’s almost as if I am there. I also want to point out that your music/audio edits are BOMB. They blend in perfectly creating anticipation and adds emotion to the video itself. Kudos to you Mann. Looking forward to your next trip. Maybe you can come to Trinidad sometime, the game here is next level.
Nice video but for that dentex you should have gone to the bottom behing the rock he was sleeping, crawl a little bit until you can see him and just take the shot somewhere it would'nt tear off. Making that kind of shots is not easy. That fish was there just sleepling, begging to be shot, he would not hear you if you arrive to the bottom a little far away and if you were stealth. Him laying in the sand like that, reminds me of the red mullets and what I do to catch them, is exactly that. I would have only taken that shot if there was not any structure around. Hope this helps for the next time
You can’t leave Europe until you have landed one! Whilst I feel for you I just got out of an incredible dive with 2 large hoodlums reefing me 🤒 so watching your pain has helped mitigate mine. Great video Dan the Mann 😎
Daniel Mann I’m a big fan but that does not look like a dentex. It looks more like a Zebra seabream. Here in Portugal we call those Sargo Veado. I have caught a few along these years so I know what they resemble under water. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Hugo, definitely not a Zebra sea bream but a dentex in threatened colouration. See these two photos. The Zebra bream doesn't have black spots like the dentex does, like in my video. fuerteguide.com/media/reviews/photos/original/c6/e6/29/large-eye-dentex-antonito-69-1546614472.jpg media.istockphoto.com/photos/dentex-dentex-picture-id1061049660?s=612x612
@@DanielMann its a dentex for sure ... just looked over and over on a bigger screen ... when you watch it on the cellphone it really seems like a zebra ... better luck next time brother ... come spearfish with us in the Algarve, Portugal !
Nice vid Daniel. I was spearfishing in Crete in a place calle Xerokambos. I was there for a month (September 2021). All I could catch was Lion fish up to 1.5kg. I also saw plenty of parrot fish up to 40 cm (I don't hunt those). And I managed to shoot (and missed) an atlantic Spanish mackerel. I also saw one Dentex in the far (25m away at least). The sea-bed looks the same in Rhodes. I was tempted to use the torch but as yourself I am a rule follower. Im heading to Fiji next year, I hope to find better fish there.
My hometown it's in the Mediterranean coast and I have never seen a lionfish there... crazy. Daniel I can put you in Dentex Dentex heaven if you want. Off course it's not easy, but definetly a place with high potential.
Was in Croatia last summer, in almost any spot there were Dentex (they call them Zubatac there) ! Might be something to look into for your next Mediterranean Dentex trip!
Great content Daniel, you were hunting close to my own backyard. If I could just make 2 recommendations for your next trip to the Med... a small, powerful dive light is an indispensable piece of kit for spearfishing in these waters - and - a compact backup gun you can hang from your buoy. A small pneumatic does the job. This gear will allow you to fish the rocks properly. As you are aware, the fish here are very crafty, and sargos and grouper often hide inside the rock structures by actually flattening themselves on the roofs inside the hidey holes. You really need to get in there to see this behavior, but it happens very often. Holes you thought you've checked could very well have fish in them flattened on the roof of the rocks just out of view. Lastly, going out on a RIB will significantly improve your results. We have many small uninhabited islands and outcroppings here that are a short distance from many of the islands in the Dodecanese. The waters there are only disturbed by other spearos who go out on boats, a frequency far lower than people hunting from shorelines near resorts and hotels. Best Regards!
nice video! I am not half the diver you are mate, but fishing in Greece, i can tell you have to slow down a lot. you move too fast and even when ambushing you have to stay absolutely still for fish to approach you. These are some smart fish or they don't survive here :)
know exactly how you fell mate im a 12 year old spearo and found a giant nz snapper sleeping in the shallows swam right up to it and point blank missed from like a meter away dont even know how it happened would have been a fish of a lifetime dont even know how it happened would have been a fish of a lifetime
Wow I always wait for your videos but Really difficult island you picked my friend Next door Simi Island has big Jacks and lots of other fish particularly groupers
Hi Daniel . It is very important to know the good fishing spots . Rhodes is a magnificent place but has been overfished the past 2 decades . Next time you are here let me know . If you are familiar with deep fishing the something good will hapen
Thanks Alexandros, like always I’m going in to these places blind and following my nose around. I can fish deep enough but not without a boat. Swimming a long way and then trying to dive deep isn’t much fun!
@@DanielMann The place near Lindos we see in the video use to be a fantastic place . There are many reasons why it s not anymore .By the way have you spoted lots of lion fishes ?
@@DanielMann All places you've been are among of my favourites . I 've been diving there since 1995 . The second place you visited has big white groupers at the depth of 32-34 m . Because of the poor visbility you have to dive with a boat over your head and usualy with variable weights . The third place its's calles ' the seals port'' cause of an old seal that it use to be there for years. It s very dangerous there cause of the many fast ribs that pass by and may not see you . Next time allow me to give you some tips were to go for better video shhoting with big fishes . Take care !
danny ! you should try to dive in the waters of turkey ! chennakale and arround there, i think is the best mediterranean spot, easy for dentex and big groupers and not too deep
Great video Daniel! I too find Dentex really hard to catch and I was really sorry for you that it go away... next time come to North of Greece at Halkidiki I will share some good spots!
Nice video Daniel !... and yep that's the reality of everyday spearfishing in Greece... drop a message next time... maybe i will show some spots 15min away from Athens airport 😁😉😉
I am really glad you came to Greece for spearfishing after Crete it means that you like the hard dives to get a fish specially a dentex. Anyway i really enjoyed the video .👌👌👍
Bro the first fish looked like Zebra sea bream and not Dentex :) the fish at 10:43 are Bluerunners they often do come back after they run away if you make any sounds, hitting a rock with the gun handle is effective.
Great video as always Daniel. This sleepyhead Dentex will wait for you next time passing by. And yeah ,the best way to shoot fish in Greece is with a Greek speargun 😉. And again, great video as always Daniel 👍
Awesome video, I love your content. Unfortunate about not getting any fish i feel your pain. It is so hard diving the med i find, just not my cup of tea aswell. I am from South Africa, I have spoken to the guys at Rob Allen face to face about their carbon/wooden hybrid which I am interested in buying but I am not completely sold to yet as i have only heard back from them. I know you mentioned Rob didn't want you talking about the gun but it would be much appreciated if you could fill me in on what you think privately Looking forward to your next video :)
I believe i stayed at the first hotel you were at. Atlantica Aegean Blue? The watersport guys there rent boats and it literally gave me chills to think about how easy it would be for some drunk tourist to not recognise the buoy you use and drive near to you

@@DanielMann its a dentex for sure ... just looked over and over on a bigger screen ... when you watch it on the cellphone it really seems like a zebra ... better luck next time brother ... come spearfish with us in the Algarve, Portugal !
Awesome video, i always enjoy your video's, the water looked so nice! Those spear guns looked really nice! Be safe, SEMPER Fi 🐾🐾🐾🔱☠️
Absolutely fantastic video Mann. Can't wait for the next one
finally a new daniel mann video, welcome back G!
Hey Man, your is amazing and Nice video always good Job
Hello fron Brazil 🇧🇷🤙🏼
The Med is a badass
What a ripper video keep up the good work
Great video Fan - I’m sure off Kos for my first spearfishing experience….looks like I need to take a boat!!!
Thanks Apexmoto. Unfortunately it is prohibited to use a torch in Greece. I’ll definitely hire a boat next time!
@@DanielMann - Heh... so is spearfishing at depths greater than 10m. I'm sure you understand.
Never heard about being prohibited greater than 10m. Do you have a link to that information?
nice video! I am not half the diver you are mate, but fishing in Greece, i can tell you have to slow down a lot. you move too fast and even when ambushing you have to stay absolutely still for fish to approach you. These are some smart fish or they don't survive here :)
Fantastic video and magnific trip. Congrats and thanks for sharing.
Gracias José 🙏🏻
Great way to start the day before heading to work. Cheers, mate.
Cheers Adam!
know exactly how you fell mate im a 12 year old spearo and found a giant nz snapper sleeping in the shallows swam right up to it and point blank missed from like a meter away dont even know how it happened would have been a fish of a lifetime dont even know how it happened would have been a fish of a lifetime
Another great video. Really enjoy the narration as you are so informative. Thanks 👍🏼
Wow I always wait for your videos but
Really difficult island you picked my friend
Next door Simi Island has big Jacks and lots of other fish particularly groupers
It looks like a fantastic place and I’m sure 20 years ago it probably was like you say. Lots of lion fish everywhere I dived in Rhodes.
Take care !
Oh noooo. Thats really hard to swallow. But as always, even without a Dentex, very good video and fun to watch!
It still pains me watching it! Thanks for watching 💪
@@DanielMann Yeah thats the good thing when you record it, you can torture you multiple times :D
Now I wanna know how the guns went during gun testing!!! Guessing you took the roller out more due to the range on it vs the orca?
Only because it’s a longer gun. I prefer the handling & balance of the orca.
Salam Daniel, thanks for sharing with us your lovely diving adventure.
Be safe
Glad you enjoyed it
Love your patience👍
Thank you Gamaliel!
danny ! you should try to dive in the waters of turkey ! chennakale and arround there, i think is the best mediterranean spot, easy for dentex and big groupers and not too deep
The Mediterranean is a hard gym, probably the hardest, keep grinding and you will get rewarded for sure💪
Absolutely the most difficult place to spearfish.
The return!!
can you please show a better view of the band setup of your speargun .. teh rollers / pulleys / strings ?
Hence the "Dead Med". Look at all that barren seascape. Is there any living coral there anywhere?
Great video Daniel! I too find Dentex really hard to catch and I was really sorry for you that it go away... next time come to North of Greece at Halkidiki I will share some good spots!
Next time!
Nice video Daniel !... and yep that's the reality of everyday spearfishing in Greece... drop a message next time... maybe i will show some spots 15min away from Athens airport 😁😉😉
Thank you!
Hey Dan, what a great place. Clear water, no sharks. Fish? Some say good old Greece but most tell the truth 😜😜
Openly admit I’m not at a proficient enough level to shoot fish there yet.
@@DanielMann Mate, I'd be open enough to say I wouldn't either. It's pretty but a desert can look good too. I need them dumb and shallow these days
I am really glad you came to Greece for spearfishing after Crete it means that you like the hard dives to get a fish specially a dentex. Anyway i really enjoyed the video .👌👌👍
Thanks Sotos, you never learn much when things are easy!
@@DanielMann yea true ,the unknown is always interesting 😉👍
Bro the first fish looked like Zebra sea bream and not Dentex :) the fish at 10:43 are Bluerunners they often do come back after they run away if you make any sounds, hitting a rock with the gun handle is effective.
The spots on it show that it is a dentex, also wrong shaped head for a zebra sea bream. www.istockphoto.com/photo/dentex-dentex-gm1061049660-283637824
Striped bass have proven to be my nightmare fish.
Oh so fast and weary.
nice video mate
havent been watching anything for a while
But loved all your AUS EDITS... when you coming home
This is home for now 👌
It's Grouper, not Groper! Great show, dived at Rhodes, Lindos, Kremesti, and Rhodes town, it was barren, but, such is life!
Poor visibility is actually an advantage WHEN you are familiar with the area! You can't see, but the fish can't see you too !!!
Great video as always Daniel.
This sleepyhead Dentex will wait for you next time passing by.
And yeah ,the best way to shoot fish in Greece is with a Greek speargun 😉.
And again, great video as always Daniel 👍
Dentex is one hell of a fish to catch. You would be luckier in North Corsica (did catch my biggest dentex here but shhh). Keep up the good vids.
first fishing boat i ever worked on, the captain told me, "it's only a fish."
I know you mentioned Rob didn't want you talking about the gun but it would be much appreciated if you could fill me in on what you think privately
Looking forward to your next video :)
I feel your pain with that rock shot
Striped like this yellow and brown color is definitely not a dentex, nor the shape of it..hope it makes you less disappointed :)
100% a Dentex www.istockphoto.com/photo/dentex-dentex-gm1061049660-283637824
You might find a few fish in a island called koufonisia it’s small and u got decent hotels
hello Daniel, very beautiful moments.
That was not dentex, Amazing video. thank you for sharing with us. XX
100% a dentex. Look on a bigger screen and you will see.

Nice speargun 😍 I wish a have a speargun even if a simple speargun 😁 nice video bro🤙🏽 dive safe 🤙🏽
I believe i stayed at the first hotel you were at. Atlantica Aegean Blue? The watersport guys there rent boats and it literally gave me chills to think about how easy it would be for some drunk tourist to not recognise the buoy you use and drive near to you
The first hotel was Casa Cook so very close by. I should have rented a boat I think!
