In addition to all things French, I am glad my Scots ancestors played a key role in the development of Montreal. It has really grown into a magnificent city, not without its trials and struggles. It is a shame Anglophones abandoned the city over the PQ politics. I wish Canada would embrace its French heritage more, as opposed to wrangling with it. The beautiful language and heritage add a richness to the country, and not benefitted by Anglos trying to appear superior. I am appalled by the lack of respect by many Anglos when visiting Quebec - in their lack of attempting the French language. Much of the British occupation of New France treated the French very poorly, including the banishment of the Acadians. Shame on them!

I dont always write a comment on a UA-cam video (in fact I never did before) but first of all I wanna say thank you for this well explained and informative video. I learned a few new things in this one and I was actually surprised by the fact that
MTL is (or was) actually the third biggest commercial hub in North America! Is it still the case nowadays? Thank you

The mountain wasn't in the middle of the village, it was in the middle of the island. The mountain was very far from the village. But, yes, it was named after the name of the mountain eventually. It started out as Ville Marie. Hochelaga is far East of the mountain. Nowhere near the mountain. When they went farther inland, they founded Ville Marie. There's no Lachine tunnel. There's a Lachine Canal. I think you meant to say Montreal WAS the third largest commercial hub in NA! But not now.

Does it mean if Quebec does become independent, then Canada will no longer use French as one of the official languages anymore?
