I have a finished object to show you today! This Shift Cowl (designed by Andrea Mowry) has been on my list to make for many years now, and it’s something that really got me back into wanting to spin. The whole project has been mesmerizing to knit because you don’t know what colour is going to come up next. And so today, I want to talk about the yarns I’ve been spinning for making this cowl, and how I’ve been feeling so good about it too.

Hand-dyed colour. It can transport you. Transfix you. Transform you. Since 2005, SweetGeorgia Yarns has been making exquisite hand-dyed knitting yarns and spinning fibres in passionate, relentless, and unapologetic colours to inspire, educate, and engage our world-wide community of knitters, spinners, weavers, and makers.
i love this channel, my age is 15 but still i love it. Because she teaches about fabric weaving and i love different design of fabrics.
Thanks again, have a bless days and Happy New Year🍇🎉🪅
Your spinning is gorgeous. Goals!!
I agree that the whole process is part of the art. I liken knitting and weaving (don’t spin…yet) to painting a room. It’s color choosing, wall prep, trim, clean up…all a part of “painting”; just like pattern design, color choices and placement, then the actual act itself.
I always enjoy your videos from a subject and production standpoint!
Great video today.I love the cowl..nice colors...I just started spinning so I'm still making dreadlocks...😁😁
Fell down a rabbit hole of knitting pumpkins this week. Don't know why, really excited. Good way to use small bits up
I've just started to teach myself to spin with a little e-spinner. It's tough to find good courses online and I'm glad you've got some available. I'm excited to dive in.
I made the Shifty sweater this year and I completely agree with your thoughts on the pattern. Your colors are gorgeous! It is such a great design for slowly variegated yarn like this. Highly recommend trying the sweater at some point if you want some variety. the sweater uses sport weight, too.
Gorgeous cowl! 💕
I love simple patterns that let the yarn speak and have a dramatic effect. I'm going to spin/knit this for sure 😀

The aurora handspun is gorgeous!
Thanks for sharing
Gals gals gals
Would you mind posting a close-up photo of a section of that cowl? I'd really love to have a good look at that handspun yarn knit up! Maybe twitter?
Your shift cowl is beautiful! I’m wanting to make this for my first spin to knit project. I am wondering, how did you split for your fractal? Thanks for all the information you share!
👍🌹
I spin really fine as well. I tend to chain ply to bulk it up, but could you also make it a 4 ply (ply two 2-plies) to make it heftier? Would you use the loft you're looking for? Just asking questions because I haven't done it either. Excellent video today!
Lovely work. Are those handspun yarns 2 ply, singles spun as roving presented, then plied together, each from starting end? Or were any "reversals" involved, in either spinning the singles, or in plying?
When is Kim McKenna's class "Nuances to spinning better yarn" available on the SG school?
It’s slated for September 8 ☺️
@@sweetgeorgia is there a link please?
Could I make this with only two colors? I bought three, two fibre braids from Sweet Georgia and one from a seller on Etsy, and they just aren't going to work together.
Question: I’m currently knitting a colourwork/fairisle cowl, and I’ve done all of the fair isle chart rows. I reached the last 2 rows, and these rows ask for me to knit a plain stockinette in the background colour, so I went ahead and chopped off my other pattern colour. But I’m confused about gauge. Stockinette’s gauge is different to stranded colourwork; stockinette rows tends be wider than stranded colourwork rows. So If I use the same size needle, wouldn’t I end up with a project that became wider? Help please! *In a nutshell, how do I switch from fair isle to plain stockinette in the same project?*
I've done both patterns and totally loved the process, but I found the actual items a bit too warm and heavy unless walking outside in the winter. But I'm sure a Canadian winter should be fine...
Do you also have classes in Dyeing Roving with natural plant dyes? I am only new at spinning ( spindle only at this stage) but I only want to spin naturally coloured yarn. If we do research how the Chemical dyes are made for commercial roving or yarn we see how damaging it is to this planet and the health of the workers involved in the dye industry.
many many, really really, many many, really really, many many, really really...
