PLY Magazine is running a Spinalong to coincide with the launch of their book, 51 Yarns to Spin Before You Cast Off. You can post your entries on their Facebook, Instagram and Ravelry groups with the hashtags #51yarns, #handspunyarn and #plymagazine. There's a different theme each week and you can find a list of the topics and other information here: plymagazine.co... The best part is that one winner each week gets a one-year subscription to PLY! I've decided to play along in video form as well by creating a video each week to correspond with that week's spinalong theme.
This week it's Fractal - a method of managing colour in hand dyed fibre for fun colour variations throughout a project. I'm using fibre from Hilltop Cloud: www.hilltopclo... to create a partner yarn for the one I spun in self-striping week.
Next week (w/c Monday 10th September) is In The Grease (AKA unwashed fleece). Hope to see you again then. In the meantime, happy spinning!

Adore the results, and thank you for the clear demos & explanations of fractal spinning & the fibre prep especially!

I had to smile at the cat playing fetch. Mine used to deliberately put it about 1 inch out of my reach and demand I throw it again. LOL

😂 Yep, Dexter could put it in my lap or somewhere easily accessible but he insists on putting it on the floor or halfway down the landing. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Thanks, Becks! All sorts of great info in this video! Gonna give it a go! Though not a 3-ply! 😂

I have seen a couple of other videos of people spinning fractal. I could never work out why it was called that. Now that I have seen you doing it the right way, I can completely see why! Thank you!

I use a kitchen scale in grams when I'm splitting fiber to ensure I spin the same amount for each bobbin. I'm not a perfectly consistent spinner, so my yardage isn't always the same. But I have a much better chance of having them come out the same if I weigh the fiber splits first.

Those is definitely the most clear video on fractal spinning that I've seen yet, thank you.

Ooooh that little montage of the spinning was so satisfying to watch well done on that editing!

Really enjoyed this thanks. Have done fractal once and found it really pretty when it was crocheted up. Very clear instructions and I haven’t done a three ply fractal, so might try that sometime.

You’re very welcome, I’m glad it was helpful. I do love a fractal 3-ply… well, any 3-ply to be honest! 😂

I have tried fractal spinning more for ease of spinning thinner sections rather than looking at the color sections. Safie is so cute bringing you mousie.

Really excellent video, Becks! And yes, having only learned to spin since June 2017, a fractal spin was my very first "experiment" with manipulating color in a dyed fiber braid. I absolutely loved the result! And I'm actually not very fond of barber-poling myself, but like you, I found some of the color combinations were very fun and interesting. It took me some time to figure out which types of dye jobs do well with fractal spinning and which ones don't, but I've got that down now! Thanks again for a well thought out and well executed video...! P.S. Love your "kitty cameos"!!!

This is a fantastic video! So glad I found this series and you. I adore how your cat plays "fetch" or, in cat parlance, "Throw it again, Mummy!" My girl does the same. Ta!

I've done fractal spins, but using short segments of colored fibers rather than a dyed braid. Your video, as always, got my mind spinning (no pun intended) with a million possibilities. Thanks, Becks...I always look forward to your educational videos, as well as your mousie tossing😁 Dexter has grown into a magnificent big boy. At one point, I envisioned you going to work on your bike, with multicolored dreads....and Saffie attached to the ends, munching away...must have been a fever dream!

I’m in the middle of a fractal spin with three braids of hello yarn. Thinking of making a jumper or short sleeve cardigan.

Rofl. Im new to the idea of spinning and learning new fibers. I want to add this beautiful and artful skill set to my skill set. As confused as i was getting to the end of this video i did learn a ton of vocabulary. The high point of it for me today is the proof im not the only one who has/had a fetching mouser. I love your video and will be going back to your first video an move forwaed. thank you for showing and sharing.

I finally understand fractal. Not my cup of tea but still interesting to learn. I love your “dreads” I just purchased a few braids of BFL... i am totally doing the dread thing when i’m ready to spin them lol. And adore how your sweet kitty brings you his mouse for you to throw! I had a cat that did that. I am a cat lover and yours are so cute☺️

The swatches are only 30 stitches wide how would it look like knitted up as an adult jumper or cardigan.

This particular yarn was intended for socks, which I’m actually knitting at the moment, so the samples give a representative idea for my specific use case. Once you know the fractal technique, you can spin and swatch for whatever your intended project is.

Also, the look you get with fractal massively varies depending on how the fibre is dyed (ie. how long or short the colour repeats are) and how many times you strip the fibre for each singles. Stripping fewer times results in a less ‘busy’ yarn.
