Im a gm trans tech here so I see these 6 speeds every day. you are right these torque converters are cheap and are made in Mexico. I replace 1-2 6 speed trans a week due to faulty torque converters. if you can read data I find the faulty converters by watching tic slip speed. if It spikes up and down over 110 rpms when applied its bad. if I pull the pan and find metal I recommend a new trans and they come with a 3 year 100,000mile warranty. something we can't offer if we rebuild it and it takes me about 4 hrs to R&R and is usually about $4200. if I catch it early enough and no metal is in the pan the trans pump is usually scored a little so ill replace the pump and torque converter and its good to go. The 8 speeds have good torque converters but gm had issues with fluid drawing in moisture and causing tcc slip. they have a formula out now by mobile 1 hp fluid that I flush these 8 speeds out and it solves the shudder. if I were to purchase a newer gm I would recommend the 8 speed. they are well built and have the least amount if issues.

Casa, I have read a lot about what you are saying and I do believe that I’m going to research the modification to the thermostat and do it. Thank you for that as well.

Good lord, now ya got me worried. I tuned my 19 z71 (legacy) with the 6 speed with the diablew tune also. I only have 25,000 km on it. And only around 3000km on it with the tune. Now i feel like taking the tune off lol. Not because of his TC failure, just cause if i do have future issues, they don't try to blame it on the tune.

@@02mp9696 as a tech I can not see what tune you have installed, I have a Diablo tuner on my truck as well and it won’t effect anything with warranty because there is no way we can see that info unless you tell us. So leave it on and if it fails it won’t be because of the tune

@@tomlorencz8445 thats awesome news 👍. We changed the pressure on all the gears, over a few different revisions, kept tq management on, and he did a few things like how much pedal input for it to down shift quicker etc.
Kinda sucks knowing it has a good chance it will fail, just when and where.. in just over a year and a half, I only put on 25.ooo km. Also, would that tc slip show in a data log, or is that a gm tech specific scan?
Well thanks for your professional input 👍🍻🇨🇦

    GMC Sierra
Count me in…2016 GMC Sierra slt 6 speed Trans bought it with between 50k-60k miles it’s current mileage is 114k. Had some slipping and whining noise on cold start then it would clear up while driving. Took it to a couple mechanics they couldn’t find anything on the diagnostic machine. About a week ago leaving work which is a GM transmission plant smh, I was trying to make a left turn on a 2 lane main road my transmission just stopped working even though I had enough time to turn with traffic coming it would not move for like 15 to 20 seconds until it caught and I did a U turn back into the parking lot . I have a 2 year old, and I’m so glad this didn’t happen with her in the truck. if someone wasn’t paying attention I would have gotten T boned….they need to fix this problem and make things right

Just being aware is half the battle. Knowing that the normal transmission warranty is at 60k just keep an eye on it. Might be worth an extended warranty if it’s not too bad. You guys also have to keep in mind that I picked mine up at 72k so I don’t know how it was treated before me but I have found enough guys online that have had these issues.

My 6L80 just bit the dust at 105k on my 2015 Sierra. Just like you said it was the torque converter. Naturally the high bill of the repair had me looking at new trucks. GM is now pulling the 10spd out of their trucks too in favor of the 8spd. They had a collaboration with Ford on the 10spd and maybe it’s souring?? Either way, what the heck is going on over at GM?!

I have a 2017 silverado I bought at 41k , have around 43k on it now. every now and then when I shift from first to second I can feel a bit of a jerk. I've been looking it up and saw the class action. I also saw people saying it won't get any worse. It's definitely something that bothers me and I think of a lot while driving. Not sure if I should bring it to a transmission shop or wait it out and see if anything gets worse

Travis. How many miles on yours. I would try to locate the best transmission guy in your area and discuss it with them. If I knew then what I know now I would have at had the torque converter replaced. If you have the fluid changed they should be able to see signs in the old fluid of what may be happening. Best or luck. If it’s under warranty complain to the dealer as much as possible.

Yes. Same here on my love for GM. Know I’ve had a total loss from a lan electrical failure in my 2005 Tahoe and now this so it’s getting tougher and tougher to keep the live alive.

I've had 5 89-98 Silverados and 1 99-06 Tahoe all with 200k plus Chevy falling off for sure mine has 68k and it's a minute It runs good it shifts men it goes in and out of V4 and V8 perfectly It looks brand new My boss has a 2019 F350 with 15,000 mi and it's filthy and it's underneath the hood The truck I bought looked brand new but we'll see the guy did change the fluid at 30k and I just had it done I had the dealer do it before I took it and the differentials and transfer case and radiator fluid so I'm hoping it works man I'm not worried about the motor Yes it's direct injection and there's a lot of carbon buildup but I'm just going to seafoam it every oil change and I'm going to buy the oil separator to collect the oil vapor sludge between doing both that and I'm only going to run 93 in it the motor will be fine I'm just worried about the tranny

You realize Ford is having the same problems with their transmissions right. seeing how Ford is the one that built general motors 8 speed transmissions that they are having the class action lawsuit on, the 8-speed transmission that is failing in all the GMS is the exact same transmission that is in all of the Fords that are 8-speed automatic as well there's no difference in the transmission
