Can't have cheaper tea imports undercutting the smugglers can we? Not like America's founding incident is a myth where the henchmen of an illegal drug smuggling ring destroy competitors products under the guise of patriotism. A country ruled by tycoons and special interest groups then and always.

Most Americans don't have electric kettles, because we don't drink hot tea often enough to buy a special purpose appliance we have to store.
Now, we do drink coffee on the regular, and so most of us tend to have coffee makers on the counter. So, if we need hot water in a hurry, we use the microwave.
And a few of us have electric kettles- I have one (even though I've only used it two or three times in the year and a half I've owned it).
It's really no more surprising than wondering why Americans in Southern states generally have AC, but many Europeans do not. I mean, I don't even live in the Deep South (barely in the South, actually - Maryland is 10 miles to the north), but we can expect about a week every summer above 35°C, with nearly 100% humidity.

You are projecting your own experience and habits onto all Americans. It’s a big country. Not everyone lives like you. I am American. I drink tea every day, and I always have. I have-wait for it-a nice, old fashioned copper kettle. It was new when I bought it about 20 years ago. I put it on the stove and I boil water. I boil water for all kinds of things, including all kinds of teas…and other things. I use the kettle. I also drink coffee, but I don’t use a coffee maker because I think they make boring, often weak coffee. I use a Moka pot, and I put it-surprise!-on the stove.

@ 1. Electric kettles are very popular in the UK because they boil water VERY fast, especially because they have 240V electricity. 2. Not everyone owns a microwave. 3. Inconvenient and awkward at best to boil enough water in a microwave to fill a teapot. 4. I’m no expert, but my guess is that boiling x amount of water in a microwave uses more energy than an electric kettle. Electricity costs more in the UK than in the US.

    • @ousqa
      @ousqa 10 годин тому

@odietamo9376 Yeah I guess if you didn't have a microwave already an electric kettle would make sense. But at least where I live more people have microwaves than don't, and it seems if you needed to boil more than a cup a normal kettle would be easiest.

We drink cold drinks more often than hot over here (and almost always put ice cubes in them, something I've heard blows your minds). We also have 120V power which is enough lower to cause electric kettles to work about 30% slower then yours.

@@Xiuhtec “We drink…”? Speak for yourself. Not everyone has your habits and preferences. I drink hot drinks more often than cold ones. What most people don't realize is that electric kettles in the UK (and most other nations) use about %200 the voltage that we use in the US.
Electric kettles are almost twice as fast to boil water in the UK than the US.
The US was electrified earlier than almost all of the rest of the world. Thomas Edison tried to push DC electricity because Nicola Tesla had the patents on AC electricity. Therefore, Telsa reduced the voltage level to make people less afraid of AC. Well over 100 years later, the US still uses 120v AC for most household appliances (we don't do change very well).
Thank you, Thomas Edison, you a$$hat! 🤬

I am only speaking for myself, not the rest of America. I don't drink tea enough to be sold on this technology. I've maybe had 6 cups of tea last year, more than half were while I was out. I've got coffee makers and refrigerators in several rooms of my house, for convenience. If you want tea at my house, the best I can offer is kettle heated water and probably stale tea. I'd treat it like alcohol as I don't drink that either... If you want it, bring your own... I won't judge. ...the coffee is ready and fresh, help yourself.

If you're only serving yourself, boiling up half a liter to pour yourself a 250ml cup is waste of energy.
The microwave in that case is much more efficient, as you heat up specifically one cup, and it gets heated up faster because microwave superheats the water (that's why you gotta stir it). There is very little wasted energy.
One another hand, if you need to heat up a liter or more for cooking or multiple tea servings or pourover coffee, kettle does it most efficiently.

I guess I'm one of the few Americans that actually owns one of these 😂 I love my electric kettle! My family doesn't drink much coffee but we actually do like hot tea, particularly in winter months! Electric kettles are great for boiling large amounts of water at once for several reasons:
-Don't have to worry about leaving your stove unattended
-Don't have to hear the annoying whistle of a classic kettle
-Most have an automatic shutoff so even if you forget about it no harm done!
Saves time too especially when making multiple cups of tea, also works great for heating water for instant noodles.
My fellow Americans, trust the Brits on this one. Get yourself an electric kettle!

Ma'am a Texan here, just so you know in America natural gas is more commonly used for utilities, that's why household appliances stoves etc. It's just the way we do things. Even though in recent years there has been a trend to use more electric home appliances. I've considered buying electric kettles as Christmas gifts for family, friends who enjoy a mix of coffee, tea at different times for drinks. 2 In Southern US using term ma'am is being considered old fashioned. Being taught growing up manners ma'am was meant to be respectful term when talking to a woman. It's more a Southern US way of doing things, it's being used less often in recent uears

Phoebe, we do have electric kettles in America. Some people have them, but they are not ubiquitous like they are in the UK. I think most Americans just boil water on the stove. I have a beautiful copper kettle which I use to boil water for tea-and I DO drink tea!-and for other things. It’s possible that electric kettles have never totally caught on here because, as other commenters have mentioned, the electricity is 120V, instead of 220V, so an electric kettle doesn’t boil water as quickly as you are used to.
Many of the comments here are funny because they project their own experience and assume all Americans live like they do. “I just use a microwave.” (I don’t even own a microwave.) “I use a coffee maker.” (I don’t like coffee makers or the coffee they make. I make coffee with a Moka pot, on the stove.) “Every person I know DOES own an electric kettle in the US.” (Get real.)

Not to rain on the parade , but they are a common item for those that have a use for them . There is literally 10 different styles of electric kettles on amazon . The reason more people dont use them is because , since we arent as big of tea drinkers as your side of the pond , so the 2 most common use would be for coffee ( most americans already have some form of automatic coffee maker ) or ramen , and its just as easy to fill a saucepan with water as it is a kettle , so they kind of seem pointless for a lot of us .
Ps , i will say you can look really cute when you get excited . Just sayin

Well more American drink COFFEE than tea. So they have a COFFEE MAKER and make COFFEE. But to your point, most Americans use the microwave to heat water if they want it, since having a electric kettle cluttering up your counter for the 3 times a month you would need it is annoying. What most Americans don't realize though, is they can use there COFFEE MAKER to make hot water fast and efficiently too. Yeah, just do it how you make your coffee, but leave out the coffee and filter and just as fast, actually faster, you will have piping hot water to use. It does so for a fraction of the electricity when compared to a microwave too. But far faster and energy efficient would be to use a gas stove top and a old fashioned pan.
My grandmother was a tea drinker. She used the electric kettle that "whistled" when the steam was up. But she still used a old fashioned ceramic tea kettle to steep her tea bags in.

I've never seen someone so hyped over boiled water, plus how does it fit in a coffee maker?

I could never mentally separate "tea" from "leaves and twigs in hot water".

Seriously? You can't actually believe we don't have/use these. For coffee...no. We keep our coffee warm. For Tea...yes.
But here's what's going to flop your noggin, some of us are aware there are teas like elderflower which can be used medicinally.
For the record, mine has glass sides, as I like my tea to cool a bit, but do have thermoses to keep things warm, but more importantly has a rinsable strainer, so if I wish to make blends I can mix very quickly.

I’m American. Live here in America. Don’t know anyone without an electric kettle…. You’ve been misinformed babes

Well, I’m American, too, and I don’t think I know anyone WITH an electric kettle. They are not that common in the US; some people have them, but it’s a minority. But guess what? I have a beautiful copper kettle, I fill it with water, put it on my nice gas stove, and-surprise!-the water boils just fine, which I then use to make tea. So I fear you are the one who is misinformed, along with many other commenters here. Actually, not so much misinformed as projecting your life and experiences and habits onto everyone. It’s a big country.

I guess that looks cool, but i like my old fashioned tea pot that you heat on the stove. Call me nostalgic. I bet you can get electric kettles over here. I don't shop for appliances very often.

Some muricans use them. I like a microwave. It's more useful. Plus you can get a cuppa hot in 2 to 3 minutes.
