Agreed on the Ronin 1D idea. I said the same thing, I love everything about the DJI Ronin 4D and it also ruined me, they really did an amazing job with the design and feature set but 90% of the time I'll be using my camera without a gimbal. It's funny that DJI wasn't even trying but they literally created the best Cinema Camera without even wanting too. If they can release a Ronin 1D under $5,000 it would be an instabuy for me.
@@dslrvideoshooter Ooooor... what about a module that swaps out the gimbal for a regular lens mount?? Offer the gimbal-less version for $5k, then another $2kish for the gimbal mount.
I feel it’s unfair to say DJI weren’t trying. The 4D shows all the hallmarks of a highly functioning, highly resourced product development operation. I doubt the brief was anything but ‘dominate the market’.

A gimbal-less 4D to account for larger lenses would be awesome. Can't wait to see how well the autofocus works once adapting to other glass. Would love to have more non-prores recording options for projects that don't require serious grading and dynamic range (sometimes you just have to film something quickly and get it out the door!) as well, but as the first round of a cinema camera, it's pretty exciting
Red jacket is back! Love the virtual background 🔥 You know the more I think about it, if they released a version without the gimbal, and thus the lens limitations, this would make a solid cinema camera. Call it the Ronin 2D lol The gimbal is revolutionary, but for 90% of the time if your filming on a tripod, your not going to utilize it and fighting with what lenses you can use, which is more important
Yes! The camera still has a place and it completely rocks at what it is designed to do. It just happens to be so good that we want it in another form factor! I'm so glad to the 4D exists. I just want to see a complementary model made.
The feelings I get about this camera remind me very much of how I felt about the first Black Magic Ursa (which was an insanely amazing camera when on a tripod). That first Ursa, while flawed, ultimately led to the very nicely designed Ursa Mini Pro. Which is to say, this is a first gen, completely new camera paradigm. I think the 2nd gen version of the 4D will be even more stunning, and a 1D version to complement your 4D would an amazing kit.
I've watched idk how many reviews over this camera buf alot lol, so far your review has been one of the best you've, covered alot that other reviews glimps over thanks for the video 👍
This was such a thorough breakdown. I now want this to be the design language of future cinema cameras. I'm definitely thinking of how to tweak that compact rig setup from a few videos ago to feel like this.
THANK YOU for pointing out the gimbal-less option for this camera! Been saying since it came out they missed out on the oportunity to make the closest thing to a perfect camera that can be conceived today. Even better, being able to mount the sensor module solidly directly to the body with a 4 screw system that you can torque with your thumbs, so we can use heavy lenses without wobble. Would be the perfect camera. The features and image quality are incredible.
I agree. They have to be thinking about this. Would be siiiiiick if they had several body models with interchangeable sensors. They kinda have that with these 6K and 8K X9 units, but the sensors would be cool to have separately.
They sort of have been at 2 of those already. Already with the Osmo series, you could either use the camera (like the DJI X5) on the drone or on the Osmo gimbal. The market they have missed, is the non-gimbal camera market. The only thing that they make in that sphere are the action cameras. Obviously, there is hope, that they may catch on to that in the Pro market, too.
Thoroughly enjoyed this review and could not agree more with your closing statements on how enjoyable the features are. My vote is with the 1D proposition. Thank you!
Caleb, I'm curious if you'd be willing to share with us two things: How do you go about putting together your script or information for a video like this and WHAT setup did you shoot this on? (lights, camera, lens). Maybe in another video? I think this is some of the best Product video on UA-cam! Thanks again!
Im in the UK and took delivery of the 8K Ronin 4D combo just before christmas - comes with Pro-SSD and native DL zoom lens (17-28mm) - also comes with ProRes Raw ! its a beast!!!
Love it Caleb. Great breakdown, and nice insight / idea on a Ronin 1D. DJI have revolutionized the way we think about cameras and totally spoiled us. Cant wait to get my hands on a 4D at some point, it slots in perfectly to the style of work I perform!
I have no intention of buying this camera, and I've seen many other videos on it, but I couldn't pass up yours man. Thanks for the great and informative video Caleb.
I couldn't agree more. When I first saw this thing I thought "wow, there are amazing features here and so much good stuff, but what if I don't want to use the gimbal??". I think the gimbal is cool for sure and when you need it it would be dope, but making it integral to the camera makes it hard to use the otherwise perfect rig a pain in any other situation. A 1D type rig would be amazing and probably make this camera take over from the fx6 as the the next cinema camera I wanna get.
Out of the probably 15-20 videos I've watched on the 4D none went over in depth all the buttons, features in such detail. I Really appreciated that in your video. Thank you.
Honestly... it's kind of crazy how much technology we are being spoiled with these days! I was surprised when you didn't mention the camera could do your laundry and drive your kids to school... because it can literally do EVERYTHING! Which is actually why I probably will never own or use it... it's just too much... too many features... too many options... too many optional accessories... too much of everything for my tiny pea size brain to every fully grasp or comprehend. Thanks for the amazing review Caleb! You always take your content to a level that few can match!
It's a lot cheaper now around 6.5k which is an amazing price point compared to other cinema cameras like Red Komodo where you pay almost 6k just to buy the body lol. I think a GH6/DJI RS3 Gimbal is the best combo right now. You have a very close image quality and almost all the gimbal features for half the price and, you can take it apart plus you can take pictures with it too. It's hard to beat that right now.

LOVE this review & intel provided. Everything we needed to know about this Cam / System is here in your feedback. 10/10 💪🏼💪🏼👍🏻🎥 I looked at their initial launch where the HOD for DJI walks you through the system & then checked all it’s specs on B&H… but this one answers all my Q’s. Shutter angle YES 👍🏻👍🏻 when I look under the hood & know that this cam / system can do oh so much & more it’s mind blowing. Attaching Leitz Cine M0.8’s glass to this is going to be my ultimate CAM in 2022. I was waiting for Sony to get around to having market availability for their FX6’s & had my eyes fixed on that. But they’ve missed the boat entirely. Still no availability in the market 1 year on. The fact that this system partnered with their proprietary AI & LiDAR tech puts this CAM a league ahead of anything in the market. LiDAR , 4 axis, hand controlled focus, on board transmission & receiver to a separate controller. I mean seriously .. .is there anything they didn’t think about, & with update to have TC well that means we can say goodbye toTentacle Sync, expensive systems like Teradek & Preston, Atomos , Anton Bauer, endless cables W’ Dtaps . Personally I think this Cam / System is an indie film makers DREAM come true in 2022, who want to be an army of ONE in the field & get maximum coverage & not spend time being held up waiting. OK so we have to wait … but it’ll be worth it 10 fold.
Thoughtful perspective as always, Caleb. Side note: why do so many people seem to say “DGI” instead of “DJI”? Did Kai Wong start this trend or was it someone else? Seems weird.
Great review and as a Steadicam Operator (one of the first) I can only think of the 20 years I worked to try and make these many features (and did for hundreds of thousands of dollars) now available for under 10K... whew...
It would be perfect, if you could slap a "Gimbal module" on the front (like a tethered sensor block on other cine cameras). Then you would be able to switch from "1D" operation to "4D" Operation. I totally get your point and thought myself "this camera would be so much more "buyable" if you cound externalise/take off the gimbal part for when you donn't need it"
Great review of a great tool! So many smart ideas in one integrated system, which is modular where it can add functionality., not the other way around. Hope DJI pics up the 1D idea, but considering the modularity, just think about a 2nd gen 4D with a removable arm and sensor unit and the possibility to securely mount the sensor on the camera itself... So many good ideas in this product it instantly creates new ones you never thought about!
I have a question... Coming from your rigging videos. I have the Panasonic S1H, but no rigging accessories (except the Ronin-S which I mainly use with my GH5). I'm considering investing in more rigging equipment, such as a cage, handles, focus modules and more, but I am completely new to it and it's proving to be an expensive sum. Therefore, given that DJI has just released this revolutionary camera, I am questioning if I should sell the S1H and invest in the Ronin 4D rather than investing in rigging equipment that make it almost as good. It's clear that the Ronin 4D offers pretty much everything you could possibly need and makes it easy to capture the perfect shot. I just think that with all the features it offers, it's cheaper to invest in the Ronin 4D than a camera with all the extra rigging accessories. What are your thoughts?
I honestly believe that the e S1H has a better images over all. The features are great as well with the body, yet I’m not sold on the image. I would rig it up and enjoy the S1H has it still has a lot of life going for it.
Great idea with the DJI Ronin 1D. It’s been a long time coming. I think DJI will take over the camera game because they deliver a product with the end user in mind, something very rare these days. If they continue to listen to customers feedback I believe they can take over. DJI for the win!
If you plan on filming a lot of static work or need more lens compatibility you should probably grab an FX6 with a Ronin S or something similar. I REALLY want this camera but need something for non-gimbal work.
I’d like to see the opposite of a “Gimballess” version and I wish they would make a “Sensorless” version that we could add our own cameras too. Like the A7siii.. I personally like this form factor a lot more than the one handed gimbals or the humongous ring handle options for the DJI RS2. The only other way to add that 4th axis stabilization on to pre-existing cameras is to do some sort of steadicam vest system or the Tilta float. I would gladly attach an a7Siii to a system like the 4d and never take it off
Oh no not much to say other than WOW. This creates a whole new world for cinematographers and assistants and has a lot of the virtual camera feature mindset that we're talking about in Hollywood
I understand what you mean by that '1D', but this is meant to compete as a single-person on-the-move machine where you get focous and stability which was quite hard to achieve with traditional setups, so taking away the gimbal would make it an oversized A7 thus not competitive. it would be better if you could lock up the gimbal mechanically like with those gimbals when they fold up, so you can have tripod mode , power off the motors and use heavier lenses. I am sure someone, preferably DJI, makes a lock-up modification and release a motor-off mode in new firmware.
The full quality clips I've downloaded and tested grading seemed to have quite a bit of blue and magenta noise in the shadows, did you find this to be an issue? Other than that it was nice looking image, but I don't think it's 14 stops of DR...

That Star Wars ft. Apple background makes me feel like I have been to the future. Great review as always
Not only is the review great and very detailed, noooo, your also experimenting with a "Virtual" Background just for the fun of it. Great WORK!
Thoughtful perspective as always, Caleb. Side note: why do so many people seem to say “DGI” instead of “DJI”? Did Kai Wong start this trend or was it someone else? Seems weird.
Great, in-depth video!
When could we expect to see that monitor comparison, I’m definitely looking forward to that one!
Thanks
Probably going to wait until the first week of the new year! Something else took next weeks spot... 😉
@@dslrvideoshooter any chance you could please let me know your top 3? I need to order a monitor this week and can't wait a month :P
@@zackgoldsmith yes!! I’m looking for a monitor as well. Top 3 would be great
Great review and as a Steadicam Operator (one of the first) I can only think of the 20 years I worked to try and make these many features (and did for hundreds of thousands of dollars) now available for under 10K... whew...
Did you manage to test out the quality of audio recording as well? I intend to use the Ronin 4D for walking interviews/presentations...
Finally review of this by you.
nice impressions thank you!! but i am confused to why you live on the death star???
It would be perfect, if you could slap a "Gimbal module" on the front (like a tethered sensor block on other cine cameras). Then you would be able to switch from "1D" operation to "4D" Operation. I totally get your point and thought myself "this camera would be so much more "buyable" if you cound externalise/take off the gimbal part for when you donn't need it"
That would also do the trick. But I have a feeling that Z arm assembly is probably way to complex to simple be removed but who knows!
@@dslrvideoshooter propably yes, it would have to be a pretty thicc Module for shure 😂
I hate reviews channels, you are The only exception!
Thanks CS!
Amazing review!
What do you think about this being a B ROLL style camera for a broadcast?
1D idea makes a lot of sense. I miss that 4D focus knob so damned much...
Hopefully the next ronin has that 4th axis 👀
What a badass pro level camera. The pros definitely outweighs the cons. It would be a dream to have the Ronin 4D!!!
Love the Ronin 4D Cinema Camera Concept Art! Looks solid and like a camera I'd like to use.
That’s the best idea I’ve heard about this camera!
What do you think about the Ro in 4d for high quality vlogs?
Should i buy an fx6 or this for an independent filmmaker ?
If you plan on filming a lot of static work or need more lens compatibility you should probably grab an FX6 with a Ronin S or something similar. I REALLY want this camera but need something for non-gimbal work.
Nailed it. I'm dumb jealous of the features of this camera. Those handles in particular, I want on absolutely everything.
Best Review.. Impressive!🙌⚡
Robin 1D… genius
DJI, I’m ready to preorder!
I would gladly attach an a7Siii to a system like the 4d and never take it off
Yes! Or at least a DJI Ronin S with a Z-arm.
Oh no not much to say other than WOW. This creates a whole new world for cinematographers and assistants and has a lot of the virtual camera feature mindset that we're talking about in Hollywood
Even being on other side of the planet from you you still somehow reading my mind!!! 1D !
Always have to like a video from Caleb !!
Watching things I can’t buy now makes me enjoy the content even more.
