You can really tell that angel of darkness brought this poor man a heck ton of stress. And unfortunately it didn’t pay off. I really wish we might see a remake of it one day. The foundations of a great game are their. It just needs the time and passion to be executed perfectly. It really wasn’t cores fault...they were just so burnt out after making tomb raider games for every year (under the demand of eidos) I understand that Eidos wanted to capitalise on the success of tomb raider at the time, but unfortunately they didn’t pay attention to the people who were actually making them money in the first place.
Oh My GOD I feel it the same way as You describe it. TRAoD isn't bad game. Actually it's really really good and shows Lara from the dark that we don't know. I wish they or new studio remake it but don't change. Just little refine and it all will be perfect.
They were having issues getting it to run on PS2 at first then had to resort it all from scratch then they were rushed. PS2 was already difficult to develop for and that didnt help their circumstances.
The game itself got a really solid foundation. The problem is the control scheme/movement of Lara and the lack of time they had which forced them to cut out fundamental parts of the game.
I love how he and the rest of Core were people who were passionate about their games and characters. The T-Rex part and Laras design were interesting parts and kind of shows how creative devs were back then. Awesome interview! It's pretty much like a NoClip interview haha
You've just earned a medal in my book Your videos are SPECTACULAR, to a point that I rewatch 'em every now and then. I expected a lot of stuff from 'ya, not A BLOODY INTERVIEW WITH CORE DESIGN'S EXECUTIVE!, what a surprise!
Very nice to hear from Adrian Smith what we all see over the years: games industry has changed but this is a good reason to appreciate the classic Lara Croft character for the way in which it was genuinely inspired. It's also sad to hear from one of Lara "fathers" what a lost opportunity was The Angel of Darkness. 💙 Thank you Steve!
I swear to god, this was the best surprise video ever! This was an amazingly interesting interview to watch. Former Core member!!! It is so sad to hear how he feels about AOD. :( But to see the passion and all the details he remembers from the past!!!!! This interview is treasure!!!! Thank you Steve!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish Core could have released their FINAL version of angel of darkness, things would have been different! Great stuff, hope you get some more TR developer interviews! 👌🏻😎
I loved every second of this interview, Steve. It was totally worth the 2 years wait. It's a pleasure to listen to Adrian Smith. I'll add it later today on Core. Thanks again for all your retrospective videos and this interview.
Very nice interview! It's fulfilling to hear from one of the big names from core after all these years and hear his reflection of the tomb raider series.
Great interview!! I only wish you'd have asked him about the TRLE community and if he is aware of the amount of fans that still build and play custom levels
First an interview with Nathan, and Adrian Smith, awesome! I really appreciate the remaster of TR IV theme played in the background, followed by Tomb Raider II Medley from Orchestra Suite :)
Adrian talking about making 'The Skidoo' level for TR2 really tugged at my nostalgia heartstrings in a way that I didn't expect... That game was my first love. Really enjoying watching all your Tomb Raider Retrospective videos, thank you so much for making them!
Great interview Steve.. Makes the Tomb Raider fans more intrigued about the first classic games that we all love..It's very nice when you learn the background story for every form of expression out there that you admire.
This was a great interview! Found this channel after revisiting the classic TR games, and just want compliment you on your videos. Thank you for the nostalgia
Incredible work Steve!😃✨ This is excellent... It's so surreal to hear the voice of one of the designers of Tomb Raider😱 Thanks to you and Adrian Smith for sharing some details and thoughts about the series that we know and love... Specially about that part where he talks about how he would like to *change how things went with TRAOD* I hope we fans can still create TRLE levels and other ways to connect the dots of Lara Croft's Adventures 😁👏
You know on Xmas day when you were a kid and you hoped and prayed for a certain present and finally you get it and love it more than you ever expected....that's what I felt like with this vid! I could see it in my UA-cam subs for a little while yet haven't had time to watch it(kids, dog, housework and husband all getting in way lol) and I've been building it up in my head(what sorta questions were gonna get asked? Is he gonna mention how much stress was caused by AoD?) and all I can say is I throughly enjoyed every single second of it. I loved it so much. I can't believe how long I lived without your vids! can't wait to see you cover legend, anniversary(prob one of my fave tomb raider games) and underworld. Keep raiding, keep safe,
I finally had time to watch this! Oh man... I mean I'm so glad he's proud of his work, he should be, but I wish the work conditions had been better. Also let's start a petition "Let's get Adrian Smith a time machine so he can go postpone the release of AoD for as much time as needed!" T_T And I'm so happy to hear how proud the team was of Lara, and how they insisted that she was the only playable option. And ha, I'm glad to hear about that stylization, because I'd also love to keep Lara stylized rather than going for realism, as is the current trend... Also locking Winston in the freezer, ah, the thing that connects us all! :D
Having known about when you filmed this and how your chance meeting with Adrian happened, I'd been looking forward to seeing this for ages! It was really interesting and insightful. Adrian seems like a nice bloke too! Great job, Steve! I'm glad it all recorded :)
He was really trying to be positive and didn't want go into how much Eidos put pressure on his studio and negatively impact the whole franchise because of their greed to cash in on the popularity and forcing deadlines on the team. As much as a lot of my favorite games came out from Eidos, it wasn't them that create those games. Lots of good game franchises like Deus Ex, Thief, Tomb Raider, Commandos, Hitman, they all came from smaller studios.
Dude, you really need a sponsor to help you produce these works of art videos jesas, and maybe buy a lapel mic for next interviews, i absolutely love your work and dedication to the retrospective of the franchise 😍
Very interesting. Nice to hear what they actually thought about AOD and how it could have been developed more. I understand why it was pushed for release but sad to say that just wasn’t the right decision. X
Coming to UA-cam to discover this has been the very thing I've needed this evening! Really enjoying it so far, I'm up to the games that inspired TR... 🙂
Good interview. I was expecting nothing but soft balls and doting but you brought up some real juicy subjects. -The anual release cycle and crunch -The attempt to kill off Lara as a result of this -Toby leaving after 1 because of how she was being marketed.
@2:52, the main TR guy in white shirt - third from left. Is he Special in any way? Who poses for a group photo with arms doing a reverse clasp whilset looking down and away from the camera. All others liike quite level headed in this shot.
@@SteveOfWarr Yes, obviously great talent there. Sounds like quite the genius with how quickly he came up with the concepts and prototypes for Tomb Raider.
I agree with the comments stated by Davis Ho please bring more interviews to channel. And keep up the hard work on the channel it's very much appreciated 😊.
8:45 This is what people need to understand, a lot of early 3D wasn't about engine or hardware limitations but about know-how about doing things. You can easily see early and late PS1 games looking completely different, and very similar with PS2, and PC wasn't limited by specific performance and there's more gradual improvement of techniques of making something in the game as devs learned their trade. I mean, Doom doesn't have mouselook by default! Not because engine didn't allow it but because implementing stuff like that was very new in the 1990s.
@@SteveOfWarr Oh, thanks :) Didn't expect you to answer, Steve, I just thought it might be a random viewer. Love your TR retrospective videos! I've seen each a few times ;-)
these people were passionate when you are passionate you make games like tomb raider and God of war sadly tomb raider today is just a bunch of business boxes that has to be checked at the end of development no soul whatsoever
Really great interview, but I can't believe he's promoting mobile games! His target audience are the people who play video games on an escalator now. That's just really sad, honestly.
Interesting he said they changed her name to "Croft" to attract an American audience, I would've thought it was to appeal more towards a British audience. Also, I think it would've been really cool if you asked him what he thinks about the Tomb Raider Modding community which is still very active and holding annual mapping contests.
I wanted to release this once I'd gotten Angel of Darkness published as he was the game's director and I felt it would be a good way to cap off the Core Era of my series =)
In a perfect world there would be remakes of all the CORE games, including an expanded Angel of Darkness. This world is far from perfect, and usually such remakes bastardize all that was good in the originals. The voice acting will be replaced. The CGi animations will be redone. All enemies and NPCs will be forced to be realistic. That is how remakes of CORE TR games will be, and I hate that already. And yes, I know Anniversary exists. But Anniversary is Anniversary.
