@Anders Andersson Yes that is exactly what happens here, for example season 1 and season 2 he was completely different compared to how he was later.
That was due to him learning and copying from the people around him and that he kills. For example he copies alot of aspects of both Gus and Mike.

@@rigf1997 He kind of copies Jesse after selling him off too (as in Walt's eye's Jesse should have already been dead). When he does come back to ABQ he does it with a strong moral compass for once. He doesn't kill Elliot and Gretchen (really only spooks them into keeping their word) , he finally admits to Skyler that it was an ego trip, *saves* Jesse once he discovers the horrors he was put through, leaves Flynn alone, hell before E&G pissed Heisenberg off, Walter was just going to let himself get arrested and more. He really goes about it as close to moral as a hardened criminal can.
And since he copied the traits, and he let Jesse go free, it's very fitting that Walt willingly pays the price even offering that Jesse himself do the honors. Almost as if Walter's new found humanity was more than happy to trade Heisenbergs life for Pinkman's.

The way he delivers that "you'll need a bigger knife," like a sad, resigned Morgan Freeman, shows that Walt did learn a little bit about intimidation from Mike Ehermantraut. It wasn't outright threatening, like any character would deliver that line with a blank slate. It was confident in the most depressed possible way. It wasn't "believe me because I'm tougher than you." It was "believe me because I have seen some shit."
Even the pitch at the end is like Mike. Most people would deliver "knife" with a descending pitch. Walt takes it up at the end, just like Mike.

I think the best part of this that most people overlook is that it's not true. Walter has never been competent at all in fighting, and at this point in the series his cancer had come back strong. He was at his weakest and honestly that small knife would've been enough.
It's simply his presence, the looming threat of talking to Heisenberg, that was enough. At this point is reputation is similar to that of Gus', he walks into a room and has complete control even when he could easily be killed, similar to when Gus walked right in front of the sniper and dared him to move against him.
