- The book entited....Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored by Clifton L. Taulbert a natiive of Glen Allan recalled the hardship of growing up in the Mississippi Delta during Jim Crow. Glen Allan, Ms is a community of people who live in extreme poverty. This town isn't incorporated at all.
Depression will consume you and take away your desire to clean up after yourself. I'm not making excuses for the filth but when you have been taken advantage of beyond your control it can drive you into a state of depression.
They don’t have a mayor therefore they don’t have any public services. That means there is no garbage pick up service.
0 from 0 leaves o. How can you do better when you have 0. This is intentional...
Y cant those that living in this area elect their own mayor
Damn you guys dont even have a news letter..my god..there is help..i would to help. Please contact me.. what is population of this town..

This is so 😔 sad in this day and age. It looks like these people are living in slavery time. The state representatives of Mississippi should be ashame to show their faces and go to sleep at night. Oprah Winfrey was born in Mississippi I know she knows about the proverty there, she could do something with her voice and power. Oh how we forget where we came from once we become a Billionaire. God is watching.

Yes it is and deliberate.
The woman being interviewed is a leader ! She should run for mayor!
I was thinking the same thing
I am so sorry to say this but I would charge the lady interviewing at least $100 to expose my personal life living on you tube for the whole world to see
The last shall be first and the first shall be last, said the Lord.
Hard to believe that I use to live on that corner to the left as a kid. This place made me who I am today. God Bless Glen Allan, Miss..
Last time I was home in the Delta I was shocked that you could dial one mile up the road or down the road in any direction and it was long distance. I was living in Atlanta GA at the time and you could call anywhere in Atlanta and it was local. However, you come to the small towns in MS and one mile in either way was long distance. It is nothing but exploitation. Also, I started working at AT&T and I saw in the computer how they did their billing. The people in the rural areas pay MUCH more.
Why isn't this being exposed to the rest of the nation. This is indeed exploitation.
It is the same in rural Ohio. We have to carry unlimited long distance or get horrible phone bills.
That's nuts! Has it changed since then?
Takes me back to The Cosby Show Ep about the dented cans because have no choice to afford transportation out Where they charge cheap & theirs no competition
I would just get the hell out of the whole Dam state I wouldn't care what I have to do.
T Williams you right I would leave that place on a 🚵♀️to get away
Come to Cali and go to a shelter. Arozona or Vegas, its nice and warm
My sister said the farmers in her area brought Mexicans in to work the fields
an the blacks wouldnt work with the Mexians , the Mexicans would fight each other
an the blacks woulnt put up with it .
Alan Horning
Now you know the Trump administration don't give a damn about these people down there, he is toooooo damn busy with his head up Putin's ass.
Alan Horning
Well Mr. Horning, you couldn't have said it any better thank you for speaking the intelligent truth. 🙌
Thank you for sharing this informative video! 🖐🏾
Being a black Arkansan, one of the things that always enraged me was how people allow garbage to ACCUMULATE on their property. Even if you are in poverty, you don't have to let garbage build up. You can take it to a dump yard your damn self.
Simbul shut the fuck up they have bigger problems
Mario Jones - They may have bigger problems but they don't seem to care about living in filth or they would clean up at least for their kids. Get some bags and clean up where the children play!!.
Simbul THANK YOU!! EXACTLY!!
Really? They don't seem too busy to me. LOL. Mario, it's always someone else's fault, right? Continue the poor me cycle man; it's working great.
sinbul: when a person or community hsve no hope, dont expect them to behave like those of us who still have hope
I grew up in a single-parent home my father was never around my mother was an alcoholic the abuse I saw and experienced as a young child was traumatizing I drank I use drugs as I got older I lived in poverty I had no hope I can't tell you how many times overdosed. Guess what I did?????.....
A couple days after my mother committed suicide and I found her in her room she was my best friend I'll tell you what I did $0.58 in my pocket I left and hit the street I walked until my feet bleed.
Everywhere and every when I came across I asked for a job I made enough money for a plane ticket I left I got off the plane in a Far Far Away place with $0.58 in my pocket I struggled and struggle and struggled and then finally after Keeping the Faith I made a life for myself.
Because of all of my past and what I have gone through to get here I'm the happiest person in the world.
Oh yeah and another thing I realize that I had to stop blaming others for my problems
Darrell F God bless u
Nothing but excuses these other able body people have
Man it breaks my heart sad
That's a damn shame! The bills are already outrageously high and more is still compiled on top of these people....God will prevail!
YAHUAH SAYS " REVENGE IS MINE" HE will pay each one "RESPNSIBLE" for these abuses.
the men are lazy
What we have here is systematic gouging of vulnerable residents. Getting rid of the gouging will go a long way of helping these folks.
When the power of love is stronger than the love of power we may see some changes
😪fyi
Crazy that's people still live like this is 2019
This is from 2009
you think it has changed a lot since 2009?
Same shit and it's 2021, matter fact.. worse
In 2024 I wonder how are they living now......
Checking in at 2024 I hope major changes have taken place in these people's lives for the best...
Mississippi is not the only state you will find this ! Every state has a town like this !

The poverty in Mississippi is depressing. It makes me sad too see people struggling to even get the basic necessity they need. Lord help
they need to help their damn selves.
but they refuse to--which is why they're poor to begin with.
Where are my black men and what are we doing
nunya biz the rich farmers pay them peanuts and use them for the farm or yard boys. I see it everyday. That being said, the men spend what they get first on drink and street and club gambling so they prob get in debt to the rich farmers.
J Brown I wish I could give a thumbs-up and a thumbs down at the same time. What you said sounds 100% accurate. But you did leave out finding a way for them to put us in the prison complex. I'm glad you're eyes are open.
J Brown And that is the dumb bastards own fault.
Where is Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson

You know where they are, under the rock where they reside
damn that sound like modern day slaves. like slavery just ended a week ago.
That's right. Except the black man is the master of these people.
It never ended
I agree, and this is so hard to watch.

Amazing. Literally no reference to men, male responsibility, leadership, work, effort, input, ambition, plans. IMO, when men don't step up this is exactly what happens. Again, poverty of the heart and soul equals poverty in the home and the community. Don't forget there are folks who find their validation in complaining and pointing out what other people don't do or haven't done and are comfortable playing the role of victim. Personal responsibility means being honest with one's self about what they have failed to do and who has really failed them. Complaining can often masquerade as conscientiousness and enlightenment. True for me, if I'm not careful.

A good video to show how important an education is.
Move. You don't have to know anybody where you're going.
LV Teach Me
You need money to move, and they said the farm owners hire Mexicans and pay them less and won't even hire the people who already live there. Go figure.
So trueeeee. We defitnely didn't know anybody and my children and I got on down. Even though we've came back we still made moves in knowing than not knowing. Some people so comfortable depending on the mayor and other on fleshes. People please depend on God Himself-THE MOST HIGH IN HEAVEN. TAKE him with you-you can go anywhere real talk. You people putting all your trusts in MAN and their failing "YOU"?!?!
Exactly. Money is no excuse. I relocated cross country with $400 to my name

My prayers are for all of the Mississippi Delta and Glenn Allen, Mississippi.
Don’t tell your children to leave when their 18 yrs old It’s you’re job to make sure they get an Education then they won’t end up like you. Or this poverty will never end. Education is the key 🔑,

This is utterly disrespectful to African Americans. I am totally disgusted by how the city treat them.
Wow! She said that she tells her kids at 18, you've got to get out of here and go where there are better opportunities.
Get your kids in college, fill out financial aid documents.

Peace and blessings to u black queen...
I was born here in 1957, but my father left when I was a toddler. My heart goes to the people, some Federal agencies need to look into the situstion here, FCC especially.
If you don't understand Mississippi and segregation ... Shut the hell up belittling these people!
Ebony Jones-Kuye. Was up there 2012. From Soflo. And off top. I knew this not Florida from the whole way they looked. Down here. It would be fire to pay for this level of foolishness. We just not use to it
You are so right Ebony! My relatives are all from there and they don't live in object poverty. Some have BUSINESSES, and some don't want them. It's not the Negro People that are making MISSISSIPPI the poorest state in the Union, it's the White People. They have what they have and don't care a flying fig about BLACK PEOPLE. They would have a poor state than to see any black person do good. They have never changed! Get them riled up and you will find out what they will do. They like to put on a good face, but it's not true. I personally love my city of Meridian. Born and raised.
@Kyril J , You may be black now add slow too, comfortable and complacent self-righteous and I could go on but you get the point.
@Gail Davis - So what if the white people don't care about the black people. After all, the black people could give a crap about the white people. The problem here, and throughout the south, is a mentality of poverty. This is the USA, where we have opportunity to take the bull by the horn and raise our status in life. There are also white people that have that same poverty attitude. I don't know the exact reasons why and how to get people to raise themselves up, but black people aren't going. However, people do need role models to help light the motivation within. Most of them need to get out of that depressing environment, since they just succeed in bringing each other down.
@Kyril - Well said. I'm a white guy, but if I had just felt sorry for myself my whole life (for whatever reason), I'd be where they are too. In this country, there are opportunities, and one has to pursue them.
We are able to help when we unite.
Mississippi Shame on you...This is worst then Alabama.
MOTHER WISDOM I am from Decatur, Al. I have never saw nothing like this in Alabama
AMERICA SHAME ON YOU.
Jordan Sharpe come on down here and see how fat that population is, they don’t go hungry. The more kids you have the more food stamps(EBT)(SNAP) you get. 5 generations of them have been on welfare and NEVER worked.
No where in Alabama like this NO WHERE
Based on your grammer, you need an education too. Then than
1:05 White girl nervously gets out of car, snaps a picture, surveys surroundings then walks towards people, Black lady says "get on! get!", white girl runs back to car. hahaa wtf
She running off that dog that was in the frame earlier in the interview
I agree with her on those utility bills. I live in north Mississippi, and if your water bill is $100, your sewer will be the same.
This is a small community. Right behind them along the lake are the mega rich farmers second houses or descendants from the old plantations. I'm from the poor side not too far away and know many in this video area. My family has to drive 15 miles to grocery stores, to get gas, 50 miles to work one way, getting scalped by local private ran utility co. You do have to do side work to make it and save money and spend it wisely around the delta. Most give up and turn to immoral things. There is a huge divide between the rich and poor here. I can say I see immoral things happening with the rich also, they just hide more or know those high up to get them out of trouble.
You are correct! I watched another video from 'Driving the Mississippi Delta', and that person did a portion of Lake Washington and Glen Allen, and there was nothing like what's in this video!!
This lady look so familiar!!!! I’m from Natchez, MS I currently live in Jackson I’m almost certain I’ve seen this woman before.
Nobody's going to give anybody a thing in this old world. The only one that can make a difference in your life is you. I'm from Greenwood Mississippi and grew up very poor and I did not let that hold me back.
I feel ya, much respect for your decision!! Some of the most greatest individuals this country has comes from Mississippi!! Especially Black people!(smile)
That's so sad my dad lived there at Glen Allen Mississippi he grew a large garden for everyone really for the poor .His name is,Donald English he was a police officer to He sadly passed away in 2007 . He is sadley missed I'm his, daughter

Ive watched your videos a while back say about two years ago. One video had an email link to it and I also emailed that link 4-5 times trying to help. I would never forget the video it was an old lady from Mississippi who have lived in poverity her whole life. She looked so sweet but back to the point. I really just want to know how can I help. Please reply to me with info on how.PLEASE!! Thank You.

Keavia Washington, I myself called this organization several times and no response. @befaircorp
If y'all wanna help folks in the Delta and around MS you can send donations to Mountain of Faith Ministries, River City Rescue Mission. , Vicksburg Family Development. These are nonprofit organizations that are in Vicksburg, Ms. They are legit and will put you dollars to good use.

I would have to have more information on these organizations before I send my money to them. How do I know these people are getting the help that they need?
Ok why can't these people come together and keep that dead end street clean . I'd love to help . The lady speaking should run for Mayer. Hopefully the people will come together.
How sad must your life be to troll forums meant to spread knowledge, truth and awareness about social issues. I will pray for your racist soul. Love has no color. Be blessed.

I've lived in Mississippi my whole life and I've never heard of this town. I live in Desoto County Mississippi. Its beautiful here.
Yeah, desoto county is one of the most wealthiest counties in the state
This is not only an African American problem, some people are complacent, and tend to keep up the practices of their past generation, they don’t know how to make change and there is no driving force to encourage them too, This really can’t be blamed on anyone, those people are free!!
First I want to thank the woman who is doing the interview as commentator bringing this visible to all Americans to see what life is like in today in Mississippi. Now to those who are quick to criticize the residence and put them down as being lazy I say you shouldn't judge . I hate the despair of people living like this. I understand the lady who says she wants your kids to get away. I wish they could finish school and join the military or go to college is a way to get out of the environment.
I remember Glen Allen back in the Day I spent a lot of weekends and summer days out there.. my aunt and cousins Stayed there Cousins still there today. Yea it is devastated ☹️
Thanks for showing the rest of the world how some people live in America.
Yes I first heard of that water rip off in Covington Georgia charging the same fir sewage as the water bill only cause they don’t have no updated way of appropriately measuring the output, so they just “guesstimate “ it !!! Yes indeed that’s criminal
I live in Mississippi and alot of these small towns are poverty stricken. And so many feel hopeless. Because they dont have it to leave...Just sad. I blame it on the city government and state government...

1 Kings 8-47 Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither
they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;48 And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name:
Mississppi is by far one of the poorest states in America and it's just sad more help isn't given especially where it need be!!
The poorest, fattest and most religious. You would think that the almighty would help them. CRICKETS!!!!

They need a mayor.... in times past they had the Plantation owners. What a group of helpless people. I’d start walking!
Hopeless not helpless.
@jujubean54ify Your analysis is spot on correct. These people and many more Americans like them are sacrificed on the alter of free trade. Though U.S. multinationals have set up manufacturing operations here in my country (Ireland) in the past, we are now suffering in the same way. In fact a lot of Western Europe has this issue of importing cheap Asian produce and governments borrowing huge sums to pay welfare to unemployed people so they can buy these cheap imports. One word - unsustainable.
Problem solved: This woman should run for major of her community!
There needs to be a new Black Flight in Ms

@jujubean54ify You are certainly very much in touch with what is going on over here in Ireland. The U.S. is not really an option this time as you guys all have your own troubles to resolve. On the plus side, I don't think the plight of the current Irish youth matches that which your great-great grandparents faced. I just travelled around remote parts of county Mayo at the weekend (a place heavily hit by the Famine) and you can still see tilled plots of land where the potato crop failed.
Stay in school and get an education. Join the job corp, peace corp or military to get out. Do not have children until you are financial stable. Get a job in a large city and try to save your money to change your life. Don't "accept I cannot do any better". Form a group with other women that want a better life and work together to help each other. There are jobs in larger cities that pays a decent salary. Do not look back, keep it moving. Do not sleep around with the men in your community, they have nothing and looking for you to support them. Do not add depression to an already depressed situation. Have a plan A, B, C and D. Change life for your betterment. Good luck and blessings!

The government had started to lay broadband lines all throughout the rural areas of the south and AT&T and Comcast lobbied and sued to stop the government in effect leaving these people with ONLY high cost service. AT&T did not want these people to even have an alternative. It makes you sick to your stomach. And all the small towns told the Federal Government to stop trying to help their poorest citizens to appease the Big carriers At&t and Comcast.
