    Gday from downunder Karl. Andrew Clatworthy from Steetneat here. Long time viewer and first time caller. ;-) As a fellow seasoned body guy of nearly 40 years I love your on camera approach and ease of explanation. Im mostly self taught of course yet despite decades of experience building cars myself, even I can pick up on some small tips and perspectives with your videos. One common denominator is everything you said here is exactly what I do and to have it confirmed is always a good thing. Specifically make your patch a flush and perfect fit - and your day goes a lot better. Im also good friends with Wray Schelin and Ken Sakamoto and talk to them regularly about the craft and bounce ideas off each other.

    Good timing on this video. I've been a machinist for almost 18 years and always wanted to add tig welding to my arsenal. Finally got the chance to learn at work. We mainly do aluminum as we manufacture custom architectural led light fixtures. I finally feel like I'm earning my fabricator 3 title at work! Great tips, now just to take the plunge and buy my own machine.

    Hey Karl. Semi retired Jim here following your great vids! Learned a lot from your tig welding video. I have a Miller 211 Auto set that doesn't tig of course but was given a cheapy multi process welder to try some tigging.....scratch tig! I know it's challenging but HF tig comes at a price as you know. Hoping you'll find the urge to experiment (I know you can do it) some scratch start for some of us newbies on a budget. Thanks. Keep up the great vids. Hope to meet you at a local show one day. Cheers!

      Man I probably should. I feel like there's not a whole lot of scratch tig videos out there and a lot of these mig welders now are able to do scratch tig

    I don't own a tig welder, but I was always curious about the process. I 'm better informed nnow, and in keeping with my opinion that one should learn something new everyday, today I've reached that goal thanks to you. One thing I would suggest is getting a filter for Elio's camera, it would have been nice to see the puddle action you were describing.

    I used to be an Aerospace TIG welder and Tinsmith, miss it at times went into Engineering 35 years ago, never used gloves with low amps mainly lower than 90 amps and a water cooled torch. Aluminum is reverse polarity with AC arc jumps up from workpiece to electrode. DC is opposite.

    Looking forward to this one. I picked up the Arccaptain Mig200 multiprocess and the mig is really nice (especially for sheet metal - its duty cycle might be too low if you are doing a tonne of fill) so was thinking about trying their Tig. I will add - as a beginner, not only buy a 10 pack and sharpen them all - sharpen both ends! 1/2 the number of trips to the sharpener!

It would be greatly appreciated.

    Good stuff. I'm an old fart 66. My dad taught me how to weld sheet aluminium with Oxy Acet. After that sheet steel was a piece of cake. As far as I'm concerned MIG is for structural steel. Thick stuff. Not sheet metal. Grinding hard tacks off after the "weld" is a waste of time. I've compared TIG to Oxy Acet. and have had good results even with my old Lincoln 175 . Yep the secret is a tight , clean fit. Just like oxy.😉

    Karl, if I'm not mistaken, you are left handed, correct? I'm asking as I'm right handed, but I tig and gas weld holding the torch on my right hand. Always have. By the way, way back when, the way you tack and then planish the tacks as you go was the same way many of us did in the 70's gas welding sheet metal, was referred to as hammer welding. Normally only used on higher end work or custom stuff. Everyday collision, not so much! A lot of times in collision work, we would braze stuff, then slap on some filler. The boss would get mad if you tried to be more precise, even though it tended to save time in the long run, not having to do as much bondo work. "Bondo is cheaper then paying your time to do 'pretty welds' I was told repeatedly. 😎

    • @MakeItKustom
      @MakeItKustom  3 дні тому

      Yes absolutely. Hammer welding was the best way and still is. I am right-handed and most right-handed tiger welders will hold the torch in the right hand and filler in the left

    Try the spot weld technique where you turn the tungsten around so that you have an unsharpened end, place it just inside the cup, double the amperage, hold it flush with the ceramic cup directly on the metal and stab the pedal for 2 to 3 seconds. Ends up being just like a resistance weld. No more drilling, filling and grinding.

    I have a 1967 Jaguar Mk II 4-door sedan (saloon) that I'm going to shorten by about 2 feet to make it a 2-seater, rather like the XK140. I'm deathly afraid of cutting the roof across the middle to shorten it and warping the heck out of it welding it back together. I was wondering if maybe it would be better to cut it off around the perimeter and take the length out of one end or the other or both, then tiging it back on closer to the edge where there would be less probability of warping it. The problem with that is that weld would be really, really long.
