- Barry scrapyard loco's then and now. We take a look at a small selection of the 213 locomotives saved from the Woodham brothers scrapyard in Barry South Wales. The video shows a picture of the loco during its stay in Barry followed by a video of the loco now back in steam and running.
pictures from www.railwayscenes.com
videos clips selected from my previous videos.
If you would like to know which video a certain clip came from please leave a comment of which loco and i will reply with the video title.
I created this video with the UA-cam Video Editor ( / editor )
A fitting tribute to all who restored these works of art to their former glory.Thank you all !!!!!
Bubba Dee I was just about to say exactly the same thing.
Warms my heart to see such caring and vision bringing these old relics back to life...
JungleYT it is amazing what the volunteers at the heritage lines can do with a bit of determination and hard work.
God bless the late Dai Woodham who owned the scrapyard. He didn't have to help preservationists but he did. in an interview he said it wasn't something he intended doing but the locomotives were left in the yard for longer. goods wagons were easier for his workers to scrap.
@@kineticrail all those engines were saved?
@@jeremyasher297 yes along with many more
kinetic .rail why were they all saved?
Went to Barry in 1977 and wandered around the lines and lines of rusty locos. It was a lifetime experience. I would never have imagined most of those wrecks would be reborn and still running again. 220 and more still being renovated. Amazing.
Who can thumbs down this? It’s incredible transformation from scrap to working steam! 👍🏻
Some want to see trains cutup for their own amusement
@@JosinDroplet and also because these people say steam engines pollute
History and climate sad but they RIP
Someone who sells electric trains!
@@JosinDroplet I'm a scrapping enthusiast, and steam engines do pollute, it's a fact.
But I'm also knowledgeable about steam preservation and rail history in general.
I lot of dedication & love goes into restoring these old girls. A great great uncle of mine was a cabinet maker in the late 1800's - early 1900's. His job was building those beautiful old timber passenger carriages, many of which are still used or displayed today.
One of the best things about living in Cardiff as a young teen in the 70`s was being able to get the train from Cardiff central to Barry Island with a couple of mates, spend 1/2 a day in the train yard climbing over the units, playing engine drivers ( no health and safety concerns then)then onto the island fairground for some rides, chips soaked in vinegar and doughnuts. Less than a £1 return fare if I remember correctly . I wouldn’t`t mind betting I`ve climbed over some of these beauties that have been restored to their former glory which is great to see ,and brings back some great memories, so many thanks for posting.
I used to play on those old engines when I was a kid, I knew they were special even at a young age, great to see these restoration.
Great illustrative video showing that these engines were beyond mere preservation, but have been re-built and with many new parts needed and made from scratch. That all this work on so many engines has been achieved by volunteers should be recognised by a generous gesture from government (out representatives) by say, having Network rail made responsible for the maintenance of the saved lines these splendid locomotives run along.
Uftonwood2 thank you. Yes the heritage railway scene is now getting the recognition it deserves from the government in terms of the amount they put into the economy in the areas they serve.
It's good to see them all saved and running.
Its a shame a lot of these old locos were not in town centres or outside schools or stations rather than just being scrapped. Billy Butlins and Barry's the country owes a great deal of debt to.
It is strange how few steam locomotives were put on static display. In the US, it seems that many small towns have an old steam locomotive on display, whereas there are very few in the UK, except in museums. I suspect it's because they were largely regarded as out-of-date old rubbish when they were taken out of service and "Welcome to Anytown, site of this old piece of junk!" wasn't the image places were trying to project. Today, they'd be much better received, but you'd need to time-machine them here from the 1960s.
Beautiful restorations. 2 thumbs way up for all the hard work.
Thanks to BARRY scrapyard for their kindness! *****.Great people. I'm glad to see these steam locos in their new lives. 👍Beautiful video. Thank you v. much.
It's great yo see that sir Topham Hatt was able to save Barry, Murdoch and Rebecca from being scrapped.
So many fine trains lost but it's great to see these superb restorations. Congratulations to all those who made it possible; they had vision.
Whenever I see old documentary footage of old Leviathans such as these, I always search for the engines numbers and always so happy to find out that so many have actually survived into preservation.
thra5herxb12s is a nice feeling that a large number of locos at least in the uk survived
There's literally a US 19th century steamer called Leviathan that was scrapped, although a replica was finished in 1970
Amazing to see such beautiful trains transformed back to former glory!
What I think is remarkable , is when these groups of people went to the Barry scrap yard to buy these engines . They had not enough money , to do so . So they asked the owner to keep for them until they did . Sometimes it took years to do so , This was all by verbal agreement . Nothing was ever written down .
welshpete12 dai woodham certainly understood what the preservationist were trying to achieve and did as much as he could to help them out
It always used to depress me the stories of the engines being cut up at Barry - I had no idea quite so many of them were actually saved!
@@steeveedee8478 Most all of them were saved. Woodham spent most of his time cutting up old freight cars and only scrapped a few steam engines.
@@steeveedee8478 Yes, Woodham's received 297 steam locos but only scrapped 84 of them.
You
Great to see virtually all those rusty steam locomotives stored at Barry have been rescued and are now up and running.
A good number, but not "virtually all". Woodham's bought 297 steam locomotives from British Rail and 84 of those were scrapped. Seven were completely dismantled to provide parts for other locomotives being preserved. Twenty are still in basically scrap-yard condition and another 32 are still in the process of being restored. That means that just over half (154 out of 297) are currently in restored condition, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're working steam locomotives: some have only been cosmetically restored for static display and others were in runnable condition but now need expensive repairs such as boiler overhauls.

How wonderful that they have been saved for us all to enjoy now and in the future.
Heartwarming to see all these locos out of barry scrapyard, also known as hell
Latecrest601 it is great just shows you the passion of the preservation community.
Yeah, I live i canada where we don't have much of a preservation community at all in fact canada has less steam locos than california, so this video makes me a bit jealous
That is a shame does seem like most of the world havent got the steam preservation bug like us brits.
kinetic .rail let's not forget Dai Woodham the guy who owned the Barry island scrapyard . He didn't have to help the steam preservation movement, as he said in an interview it wasn't his intention to do so but he did.
Welcome to the Canadian Club. We do have that little mining steam engine at the Moose Jaw train museum in service. (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan)
That's truly amazing to see so many locomotives alive and well. Well done to all the amazing enthusiasts making it possible.
It's good to see these locomotives back in use ,I cant believe that 46 people didn't like this video ,just have been diesel enthusiasts
Thank you to all the wonderful people who have given their time and work to restore the engines and thank you for the video
MARKETMAN6789 thanks. We do owe the volunteers a great deal. There hard work means we get to enjoy these fabulous locos running
213 were saved from the scrapyard.
Though seven of those were completely dismantled to supply spare parts to others.
Out of how many?
When you're a little kid ,as far as the eye can see.
I remember seeing these loco's in Barry sometime round 1975/76 while looking after a number of BP Tankers (Bird class) which had been laid-up there. Barry was one big junkyard !!!
Absolutely awesome!!! So pleasing to see these works of art back doing what they were built to do instead of slowly rotting away forgotten in some scrap yard at the back end of nowhere. 😁
It is awesome tk think of the dedication to restoring these locos put in by mostly volunteers is incredible
Brilliant video. Thank God for the preservation societies. They do a magnificent job keeping out railway history going.
David Lamont thanks. yes they certainly do a wonderful job
10 out of 10 to all involved in bringing these back to life
This has restored my faith in humanity, very heartwarming and wonderful to watch
just brilliant to see what so many people have done to preserve this essential part of our heritage / well done all those involved.
I visited in the late '70s with the school Railway club. Lovely to see some wonderfully restored. I am part of a Restoration Society we have a working Steam Train.
I guess the love of trains never leaves you.
Its great the video brings back memories. Which restoration society are you part of, which loco do you work on? Very true it does seem to be an interest that stick with you
This Video is proof that not everything will get lost due to some people thinking of only efficiency and return on investment. My best wishes to all the steam societies in the world trying to revive these beautiful moving pieces of art and engineering. It is a rightful tribute to the ingenuity and the sweat and toil of all the men/women that worked in building and operating them.
Nothing more majestic than a steam engine pulling a train.
I completely agree
I used to play amongst the locos in the scrapyard as a boy. A magical place!
My brother and I visited Dai Woodham's yard in the late 60's, there must've been 300 locos rusting away there. So good to see that so many have been returned to their former glory.
I am not a train enthusiast, but there's something very lovely and rewarding in this!
There certainly is. Can only imagine the pride and satisfaction the volunteers who spent years fundraising and restoring have now their loco is back kn steam and running
David Davenport Im A Train Enthuasiat And I Agree
What a fabulous video, I can remember clambering over the locomotives in Barry when I was a youngster. I always enjoyed seeing them but terribly sad to see such majestic icons rusting away. Seeing that many were preserved and brought back to life is just heart warming. Thanks.
Thanks im glad you enjoyed the video.
Nice to see a video that goes from "scrap" to "fully working" regarding the steam era......Quite heartwarming.
Harry Stevens thanks it is nice to see the difference.
पुराने दिनों की याद आ गई।
Brilliant. The hard work and dedication which goes into these steam loco restorations. Steam locos are iconic and nothing since matches the interest. Beautiful machines. Hats off to Dai Woodward for realising the heritage potential.
Hearttouching vedio. Whenever I see steam engine, I remember my father and grandfather withhoom I had travelled through these steam engine trains (1972-80)between Pune to Kolhapure (my native place ).
It is very similar between machines and men. As we grew up become old and die, machines also turns into scrap. Thanks.
Thanks Barry for keeping them around just long enough.
Very nice to see these historic engines have a new life !!
I went to Barry in 1975. It was such a sad sight
spent time crawling allover the engines in barry as a kid - incredible to see the restros -
Well done! I've waited for years for someone to do this!
'wonder how many million Man & Woman hours went into those in total...but well worth it!
All credit to everyone involved in saving and restoring these magnificent locomotives.
Fantastic that dedicated people have spent so much time and effort to repair and preserve these fantastic vintage locomotives
But let's not forget that all that effort would be useless if it wasn't for all the other dedicated volunteers who restore the carriages, maintain the permanent way, paint the stations, learn to operate the signalboxes, brew the tea and generally keep these preserved railways running. It's a massive team effort.
Fantastic to see these engines brought back to life.
Magnificent Beasts and a remarkable achievement by a small band of enthusiasts all those years ago. we are all indebted to them. Well done
i went there many years ago and westcontry Swanage was there, so good to see it alive again
very good video, just shows how good the railway preservations across the country are!
InterCityBR oh yes the hard work and dedication. still a fair few waiting there turn.
So nice to see steam engines being brought back to life and run again 🌷❤🌹
It is so nice to see all the hours of work paying off
Every engineering system goes through evolution from messy and inefficient but effective, to clean efficient and effective. Respecting and preserving some of the past helps improve things in the future by making sure not to forget the lessons of the past.
Congratulations to all involved in saving these wonderful machines
Total recall here across the pond. Congrats to those who have brought these engines back to life !!!
Truly amazing. What skills and love these engineers must have.
Thanks to all those who have helped to restore these engines, they look and sound great.
Very nice to see them given new life, thaks.
GOOD JOB GB !!!
Glad you retain your history.
Except battleships. Not a one. Unforgiveable. Mind you there is Victory.
Beautiful restorations. Wonderfully done!
I used to play in that scrapyard when i was a kid, amazing to see it again.
Thank you for sharing.
Greetings from Scotland. ..I'm not a steam enthusiast. ..more a 80s train fan as that's my era...but is there anything better than the noise of that whistle before it comes into view....kudos to those who have shown enormous dedication to their craft in bringing these magnificent machines back to life ....now where can I find a class 08 shunter to marvel at lol
These were some of the preserved locos, but Woodham also chopped up 80 steam locos for scrap and sent the pieces for melting, mainly GWR types. Lots of lovely scrap copper in those fireboxes.
@@mdgfb05 The Foamers think we can save everything. They think every ship, aircraft, or locomotive can be put into "a museum".
My ever favorite .these steam loco engine's are a treat for the rail lover's.these can be utilized for heritage routes as rail lovers from around the world would definitely love to ride them.including me
I spent my young years train spotting I love it, simple pleasures from New Zealand
Glad to see the steam engines still running :D
Used to live on Barry Island in 72..must have walked passed some of those, also have been on one that had been restored .beautiful..
Unbelievable restorations. Thanks to people like Dia Woodham and Butlins a lot of our steam heritage was saved. No thanks to Beecham and British rail who scrapped GT 3 and both L M S Twin diesels along with big Bertha and all the Garrett’s
A LOS EMPRENDEDORES EN ESTA VALIOSA DEMOSTRACION DE RECUPERACION DE LOCOMOTORAS A VAPOR..........................VAN MIS FELICITACIONES Y RECONOCIMIENTO POR PRESERVAR ESTAS VALIOSAS MAQUINAS QUE NUNCA SERAN OLVIDADAS
Brilliant video, thank for sharing.
Really nice presentation, worth watiching, you get the feeling steam has somehow defied all to live life again!
It does seem like that no matter what the obstacle they do seem to just keep going.
Glad to see these treasures moving!
Nice old locomotives. Great video
Superb how they have brought them all back to life !
It certainly is great to see them running
Not a steam enthusiast but I love travelling by train so watch a fair bit of 'Railway' videos. It wouldn't surprise me if all the engines have a particular sound but I don't know enough to discern the difference. However the Ivatt 41312 seems to have an unmistakeable sound which I find rather endearing. You'd know which engine it was without having to clap eyes on it. Fantastic video.
You are correct each type of loco has a distinct sound to them and you can tell just by the sound which it is.
When I was a kid, me and my mate used to go in Barry scrap yard and climb from loco to loco. The aim of the game was to get from one end of the yard to the other without getting off the engines. As the years went on it got harder and harder as more and more (I'm happy to say) of the locos were sold and shipped out. To my knowledge not one of the Barry locos were scrapped, all went to preservation.
I would of loved to of been able to visit the yard and scramble over the locos. I fair chunk were saved of the 297 locos there 213 made it to safety
Must be those climate change idiots for the thumbs down. Keep steam alive and well. Outstanding rebuilds and performers.
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!
it breaks my heart seeing all those engines scrapped, not the ones shown in the video of course.
Most of the locos at barry scrapyard went on to be saved.
Atleast these engines are being really useful again :D
Brilliant out of this world , for a steam enthusiast , as good as my “Hornby Live Steam “ Lol
Wow just wow lovey work
I used to go there a lot as a kid in the 1980s there was still loads of old steam engines there
Great video, a very interesting watch!
Liam Griffiths many thanks
HERMOSOS TRABAJOS DE RESTAURACION!!!
To all those people who have effectively given their lives to achieve these incredible feats; I SALUTE YOU ALL!! Thankyou for everything!
My Grandpa worked for Rock Island and it appears i've got his love of trains.
Absolutely brilliant! Australia.
Some great footage
Thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed the video
Beautiful to see.
James Emery Thanks
Nice that someone had vision.
Yay they came back to life :-)
How they rectified.good job
Great video, have liked,a very nice video of the locomotive comparisons here, very nice shots and sounds, really enjoyed watching this, kind regards Josh :)
Joshua Rawson many thanks im glad you enjoyed it.
+kinetic .rail,you're very welcome :)
Britain was very strangely lucky. Not only the locos saved from Barry, but also the plethora of axed branch lines to run on today! Its strange to think that the much maligned Mr Beeching laid the foundations for the preserved railways in operation today.
So satisfying to see these old beauties restored back to life and given a second innings. I only wish India did the same of a handful remaining in railway museums but not in running condition.
Yes i have seen some of the stunning loco you have out in india. Yes us brits do seem to have caught the preservation bug pretty hard compare to other nations.
@@kineticrail True. Hope better sense will prevail, sooner than later. Thanks for the response.
I would love to see one of these locomotives arrive in Canada
don't know about ex Barry scrapyard locos but i do know you have the A4 Dominion of Canada and LBSC terrier Waddon in museums
kinetic .rail yes we have an A4 in a museum in Quebec I really want to see a British steam locomotive in Canada sometime
Kieran Bricker you should go see it. It came home to England a few years back, where it was cosmetically restored.
It looked stunning! It’s back in Canada now.
Beautiful!!!!
