    We need some axioms for our system to get going, so in this video we look at what we can use as the basis for defining success in improving your posture. By comparing what the strengthening/stretching system says with what the conscious guidance and control system says, we can begin to understand why the two system use such different methods and gain such different results.
    There are some audio issues in this video, but nothing too bad.

    I offer lessons in the Initial Alexander Technique, which are conducted one-on-one with a teacher over Zoom. They are designed to help you gain conscious control over how you move your body. Most people have no idea what they’re doing with their body, and as they misuse their body, they end up with discomfort, pain, and other issues that they may not even realize are caused by what they’re doing to themselves. But how do you figure out what you’re doing wrong? And how do you change what you're doing and overcome lifelong habits?
    In an Initial Alexander Technique lesson, you will record yourself through Zoom, so you will be able to see and understand what you are doing when you stand, sit, walk, and perform other simple gestures. With the assistance of your teacher, you will come to understand how you are misusing the mechanisms of your body, and you will gain the ability to choose to use yourself in a more sensible way. You can learn how to use your body without pain. You can break free from long held habits. All you need is a system that works.

    I think because the look of IAT is so unlike what is common, and humans are emotional, people resist this system. A well reasoned system btw. What might be helpful is showing the human body, under IAT parameters, expressing movements of dance, sports, or martial arts.

    I don't understand why exactly the fascia being taut is necessarily a good thing? Why is this considered optimal?

    I have had headaches and tension pain in my occupal group for the past few years. I feel like followinf this system would make it worse as it leads to my head being father forward. I am quite intrigued though as the reasoning behind this makes sense

    As always, fantastic material! Thank you good sir. I’m curious if you are familiar with developmental exercises. Applying these ideas has helped me tremendously with these exercises. They can be helpful with restoring a healthy gait pattern and vestibular system while also strengthening deep postural muscles. Are you familiar?

      I don't think I'm familiar with "developmental exercises" and a quick search brings up activities for children. Can you elaborate?

      @@delsartealexandermasoeroyo9147 I understand! It hasn’t been easy for me either. When I discussed with my primary care doctor, he called them neurological resets which I can’t find much info on either. It is essentially exercises that humans use as the develop movement; rolling, rocking, crawling, etc. I have read a couple of books by Tim Anderson with Original Strength if you want to look into it. I was mainly just curious. They have been helpful for me though I obviously ended up here as well and feel the same about your materials. My doctor did have me continue doing those rather than PT when he had suggested doing PT to me

    Love how in-depth you go with these vids.
    Question: I’m 16 years old, will properly fixing my posture as you describe it affect my height in any sort of way whether it be negative or positive?

      Correcting your posture will produce a small increase in height. In a lesson, that is one of the indicators that the person is correctly orchestrating the movements: it can be seen (and verified on video) that the person has increased their stature.

    That was well presented, I suppose the rules could go like.. leaving no room to inhibit the passages of airway, digestion etc, to accord optimal use on muscles

    Im very interested in your model and im currently experimenting with it, but i have an acute tense neck and im kind of concerned. Will this model take most of the tension off? Im really struggling

    I've had TMJ disorder for 15 years, and I constantly have tight neck and jaw muscles. My neck is always stiff and I've been diagnosed by chiropractors of having a straight neck with no curve. I sometimes suffer from migraines and I believe its due to my neck and jaw posture problems. Any ideas of what I can start doing to correct my issues? The only thing I currently do for my issues is visit a chiropractor once a month and use a cervical traction block 15min every day.

    Cool information, so what are your thoughts on upper cervical chiropractor?

      I don’t have an issue with chiropractors per se, but I think that getting to the cause of poor posture requires you to change your habits by taking control over your movements. Getting adjusted, even if it helps in the moment, does nothing to really change how you use yourself in your day to day life.

    Ngl this looks better than the last video I saw. I'd still like you to reply to my last reply though. At 8:30, well maybe because it doesn't ought to be slack and the examples you've shown just fails to perfectly demonstrate the model that they are supposedly advocating for? I'm suspecting it still lies in the lack of core strength. I think that's the purpose of the glutes and the abs to "rotate the pelvis back and up" and "move the midsection back" as you would state it.
    Why that configuration would lead to muscle inbalances? I think this kind of relates to my last comment. I believe most of the problem lies in the shoulders and the head being forward. All I was saying is I want you to show me a video of that model with those hands and head running or swimming and see how well it fares. Those movements specifically involves the swinging of the arms in opposite directions. It also involves the coordinated use of all the muscles to ensure efficient energy transfer from toe to head. (meaning slight muscle imbalances/instability would lead to suboptimal speed). I wouldn't say Usain Bolt was able to achieve perfect posture but he did train copious amounts of core as one of the main parts of his work. Asafa Powell might be one dude worth mentioning though, as he was the best in the world too at one point.
    Again, if you missed it and dismissed my request just because you found some fault in one of my sentences or whatever. I want to see how your model fares with sprinting. A basic human function. But tbf though, the most used function now in modern society is sitting, which is why "bad posture" is the norm now, but yeah.
    8:40 Whether my answer is right or wrong, I think it's safe to say that you should stop making these kind of assumptions. Again, show me a vid of your model running as fast as you can. If you can prove alongside with it that having the head and shoulders anchored forward relative to the body is optimal for efficient energy transfer, you'd probably be known for the most ground breaking discovery in sports science history and every top athletes would be getting a consultation with you to fix their posture.

      Something to consider is that the midsection being forward, as it is in most modern people, necessitates that the shoulders and head come back in space to counterbalance. If you move your midsection back, while keeping your head and shoulders back, you will have too much weight back. But if your midsection is back and your fascia is taut, you will have the leverage you need to get your head and upper torso forward and up. That up part is crucial. Often people are put off by the idea of a forward head because they’ve only ever seen people with their head forward and down. I'm promoting something distinctly different - forward and up.
      The issues at the lower back and pelvis are apparent in both the diagrams and the human examples of the standard model, so I can’t accept the argument that the human models are falling short of the model.
      You didn’t really answer the question as to how the model I put forward leads to muscular imbalances, you just said that the shoulders and head are forward. I get that that is different from the model you’re familiar with, but how does that show in any way that the muscles are unbalanced? That’s the trouble with narrowing in on the muscles, they can change size and shape quite a bit. It’s not at all a trivial thing to say exactly when the muscles are balanced. Even in your description you say the head and shoulders are forward, essentially describing the relative position of the bones (not mentioning muscles at all).
      I do appreciate your critical responses, I like that you’re thinking about it and making arguments. I would say, though, that your last comment is a little unneeded, as A) I said I don’t think people have an answer for either question. B) You didn’t really give a satisfactory answer to either, in my view.
      I won’t be known for this groundbreaking discovery because I didn’t make it. Many high level musicians have implement the iAT system to overcome pain from the demands of using their instrument. I don’t know for a fact that you can swim or run faster by using your fascia appropriately (though I would guess that that is the case). It might be possible that you can overclock your body and perform at a higher level with the cost of damaging yourself and ending up with problems down the road. But I’m quite certain that everyone, including high level athletes, would be benefited by putting the system I advocate for into practice during their day to day life.

      You can frequently see this posture in track athletes, i sent Jeando a video of the Italian triumph in the 4x100 last olympics and he marked the ‘line of unity’ right from Filippo Tortu’s manubrium to instep in the closing seconds of the race. Don’t just ask Isaac to do the work for you; use the tools he has described to make your own observations. I don’t pretend to speak for Isaac or Jeando but the main point of iAT AFAICS is that noone else can do the work for you. Cheers

      @@michaeltilley8708 I am not asking him to do the work for me. I am asking him to put his model into action and see how it actually fares so he can see for himself. I don't agree with his model if I hadn't made it clear enough.
      You also mentioned the closing seconds of the race where they lean and stop, not the actual running bit. And I'm not saying that you gotta have perfect posture to be competing at a high level. This is why I mentioned Asafa Powell specifically.

      I think most of the of the time they are damaging. Orthodontists ignore the entire body and try to fix the teeth as if there’s no connection between the body and the teeth. A very misguided approach in my view.

    Ok im following along after looking up skeletons of people an animals they are all straight. Only flaw here is that cadavers and bodys are curved but aleast we know the skeleton can be straight

    How old are you and is it possible to correct posture being 30+ yeaars old?

      I started in my late 20s, I’m in my early 30s now. Yes it’s possible to change your posture quite significantly even if you are 70+. It might take a little more work to get things going, but in the end you are just coordinating movements. The restriction is not all that much in the body, it’s really in the mind. The reason so many people’s posture and body deteriorates so much as they get older is because they never have the mental model or the strategies needed to take control of themselves. A disorganized body is just revealing the disorganization in the thinking. So as long as you can think, you can change your posture for the better.

      Feel free to ask questions if anything is unclear. Everything I’m presenting is fairly simple, but if you’re not used to thinking about these things in these ways, I can understand that it can be a little much. Really these first two videos are to help people frame what we’re even doing when we’re improving our posture. Many people assume that that means doing exercises and stretches -- which are things that can be transmitted relatively simply. However, the long term results of using exercises and stretches to improve posture are not great, and so it’s necessary to re-frame the issue and understand how to put a system of thought into action.

      A narrowed and compressed ribcage is extremely common in modern people. I made a video on this a few weeks back. Increasing the capacity of the upper thorax is a crucial part of improving posture.
