Dave doesn't get half the recognition he deserves. Hawkwind ain't merely a trippy band to get stoned to, they're a bloody good band and, thanks to Dave, they've kept going through fad after fad and continued to produce astounding sounds and amazing music. I have total respect...
I saw them in Watford in 1970 in a great little local gig called the Kingham hall (it is now a carpark) for fifty pennies and I have never forgotten it. For those across the pond known as the Atlantic ocean that is less than a can of coke.
There has never been or ever will be a band like hawkwind! They are a one of and are unique! I can't name one band who have made so many albums and if you played them to someone who hadn't heard them before they would think that they were made by different bands! That is so hard to do to be so unique and at the same time unmistakably hawkwind! They are a very underrated band and could have been a lot more famous but they refused to sell out just for money and stayed independent and true to themselves! I saw HW in 84 at Stonehenge and and I would say that was the last HW lineup I liked and the last album I bought.. I did try listening to the new stuff with the new members but it just don't do nothing for me... Dave is the only member who has been with the band all these years and for that I thank him
I just read some more about this. Dave didn't finally win the legal battle until 2002, but I heard about the legal battle from people who worked at the Bayou in Baton Rouge in 1994. I drove to Baton Rouge that year because my cousin there told me he saw an ad for a Hawkwind concert at The Bayou. Del Dettmar was with the group, the audience was yelling "Hawkwind!" a lot, and they played Hawkwind classics. I saw Nik play Hawkwind classics in 1995, but his band was "Nik Turner's Space Ritual."
Dave has always been the mainstay and for my money the most talented. But the mighty Hawkwind were always in flux..so many creative minds bound to cause differences. But he is so right here talking about computers and AI having a big say...wicked stuff available which they struggled mightily and brilliantly to bring us in the past..bravo. New album Onward is a magnificent return...polished and inspired..rock on!!
Yes, I would agree with that. It wasn't quite the same after Nik Turner was thrown out in the mid-80s. The combination of different influences disappeared after that, or maybe it was just that the creativity had dried up a bit. Either way, I defy anyone to say that Hawkwind after that date were better than any Hawkwind line-up before it. Still, I respect Dave Brock but we can't allow that kind of respect to detract from the reality of the situation.

Nik Turner's Space Ritual has been the living incarnation of Hawkwind for a long time, and they are phenomenal. Nik lost the legal battle with Dave over the name Hawkwind in the mid-90's. Dave was the chief founder of the band, so he got to keep the name although he gave up the old sound. Nik Turner kept playing Hawkwind classics with his version, but he didn't get to keep the name.
