I am coaching a 9 y/o baseball team. On bases loaded walk situations the coach comes in and pitches. I could see the tension with the batter. I threw a ball and the catcher had to chase it. I told the batter I wrote a song about him. Asked him if wanted to hear it. He did. I sang a quick goofy song with his name in it. I threw it. He hit it. Might be my favorite thing thus far this season.

Thank you for all of this! I am about to start managing a rookie 6 year old baseball team in a few weeks. This will be my first time coaching/managing kids. Ever! And for a lot of them, their first time playing baseball because it was cancelled last year. I am nervous because I just want it to be super fun for the kids. I want them to fall in love with baseball just like I did at that age. You’re videos and podcasts have been my schooling so far. Thanks again! Wish us luck!😀

When I grew up, I only had dads of other kids to coach me (bless them for giving up their time and money for these teams). But unfortunately, I never really learned about the game to the extent that I would have liked. Now, as a 24 year old, I can’t explain how lucky I feel to be able to watch these videos and learn from you coach about how to help the next generation and my children when that time comes.

Your awesome! I was lucky to grow up across the street from a baseball field in a community full of dad’s living through their children. I learned at a young age what I will not be as a coach. I seen dads swear, scream, Beam kids, and make their kids walk home from field!! I knew as a child how messed up it was. It is sad to see how the great game turned into a money making industry recently. Very few kids smile at games😞 Happy to see you trying to make a difference!👍🏻❤️⚾️

Through your own epiphany's you really got a good psychological understanding of what is going on. I wish baseball on all levels was like golf and everyone was quiet when a pitch is coming.

My problem is I'm great with other kids but I'm too hard on my own kid. I know I don't need to be. It's so hard for me to be quiet when he does something wrong when I know he can do it right. Of course I know he knows when he messed up even tho he is only 6 he knows the game very well. Part of the reason he is so good is because I'm hard on him but I know I need too praise him more. I need some help in the moment in what I can tell myself to keep myself from getting on him.

Once you realize you will have kids playing simply for social reasons and you will have kids who want to get better and better, it starts to make sense. I am fortunate to coach in an organization that promotes developing players over wins. I love developing players. I’d rather do that than coach in game. Wins are great and important, but making players better is where the real joy comes from. Do I want to win ALL our games? Sure! But it’s not realistic, and there are plenty of coaches who are there for wins and their own egos, not the players. I think right now THAT is the norm, unfortunately. You will have players leave if you don’t win, but that’s on them if they don’t learn it’s a TEAM, win or lose. You don’t want the “win at all cost” coaches, parents or players on a team. That’s bad for morale....
