Loved this video! I bought a slightly used Mini-14 (walnut fixed stock) in 1994. I really enjoyed it but sadly sold it 10 years ago. I did so because of NY State assault weapons law ae it had a flash suppressor and a 30 round mag. I’m still kicking myself for panic selling.

thats a hard one to judge, ban laws are never a pretty thing to handle

Love the mini. Sorry to hear yours has had those malfunctions. I’ve owned several over the years and honestly can’t recall ever having a malfunction. I use mostly Federal 55 grain X193 5.56 and Ruger magazines. They’ve all been great rifles. Sounds like yours needs to go back for some repairs. Keep up the videos sir, we enjoy them.

Oddly that rifle (my old one) was sent back to ruger twice and they reported no malfunctions
So hard to say for sure

Excellent review! The Mini 14 was my "first" real rifle, not counting my Ithaca M37, which was my first real "gun". I absolutely fell in love with the Mini14 and even though I couldn't shoot better than four inch groups at a 100, or worse when it got hot, I still loved the looks, feel and sound it made. I killed a feral hog at about 50 yards with one shot. In 2008 I bought the NRA Centennial. That little gun is very accurate and can shoot MOA at 100, if I do my part. In all the Mini14 (especially the Centennial I have now) is one of my all time favorite rifles and yes, people always comment and start conversations when I show up to the range with it. Great job, keep up the good work.

The tactical barrel is a little heavier than the Ranch version and two inches shorter.

I bought my first mini 14 in 1989 new in box for 200.00😊 new in box .still have it(and receipt . Over the years I collected a few law enforcement only guns with folding stocks. Have 1 tricked out I used in competition. I retired it and now use a ar platform heavy barrel kales scope. Still love the mini 14$. Nice rifle .

Great job on the video. I totally agree with your observation on the AK like feel of the recoil impulse & I love the mechanical sound that the action makes.
    I have 2 minis & 2 M1A’s & I find I plink with the minis more often. 😂
    Btw I’m a “Fudd”

I bought a Ranch at Wal-Mart for $699. They dumped their semi auto rifles after a shooting.

Nice review. I concur with your opinion of Tech Sights. Have them on my Ruger 10/22 and Henry Levers. Worlds of improvement. I get the itch sometimes for the Mini-14…and I could deal with the “negatives” if the rifle cost about half of what it does…just can’t take the plunge. But nostalgia and familiarity can be big factors also, as in your case.

I think your suggestion for the UltiMak rail Is the way to go you can mount a Red dot or a Scout Scope, target acquisition is much quicker than conventionally mounted Optics. My Mini 30 equipped with a UltiMak rail a Burris Scouts Scope, UA-camr ZRUS Outdoors has a good video check him out.
    Good review Thanks

Actually the older Mini's could fire 5.56 as well as 223 Rem. If you look on the receiver of an older Mini, up until the model 581 or 582, they have stamped on the receiver 223 Caliber, not 223 Remington. 5.56 is a 223 CALIBER round so the 5.56 is shootable out of them.
However, there was 1 model that was 223 Remington only, and that was the Mini 14 Target Rifle. It had a big harmonic balancer on the front of the barrel and a target style stock, so those are more distinguishable. I believe Ruger has discontinued that rifle, but they may still be found in the used rifle market or on a gun store used rack. That rifle should only fire 223 Remington. Otherwise, any Mini 14 can fire 5.56 NATO.
Originally, 5.56 was designated as a military round only, and not supposed to be available to the public, so Ruger took the anticipated act to make the rifles usable with that round by marking the rifles as 223 Caliber. Of course today 5.56 NATO is as readily available to the public as 223 Remington is so Ruger's gamble won in the end.
That being said, some Mini 14's may function better by running 223 Remington. Your mileage may vary.

I'm aware of all of that, I'm saying my example that I had did not function at all with 556 but did fine with 223. It would shoot one round and then jam horrendously, 223 had no issues
I sent that rifle back multiple times to ruger and it was never remedied, so yes I will say some of the rifles labeled 223 rem will not function as well as "pure" 556 because that is my experience

@@shazarad4127 That's a fair point. Like I said, some rifles may just prefer one caliber over the other. 223 will definitely get the job done.
In all actuality, I mainly run 223 in my Mini too.

Cogburn arsenal sells a bayonet lug for that.

I looked that up and while its cool to have the option for traditional bayonets (AR mounts) its not the exact style from the older minis
