    I love these compairisons with old and new, what would be fun to see is how it works in the hands of a mid to high handicap, no offense Matt but you are a far better ball striker than most.

    I played a Ping G20 for yrs. The shaft and head combo just worked for me and still does. I now play a Mizuno and it is less spin but does not "feel" as good as the G20 and I would definitely trade 10 yards of distance for tighter dispersion. The manufacturers play us all for suckers. And we keep running back for more.

    I have a G5 12* same shaft in R flex. As soon as the snow melts here in Canada, I start the season with this club and then transition to my 10.5* PXG 0211 driver when my swing returns. Yes, I do lose some distance, but it’s a fairway finder and so easy to hit.

    • @brianwaldo2642

      @@aponoypi For me it’s distance (a good 20 yds), 12* to 10.5*, plus I have a lighter shaft in the PXG so I’m guessing a little faster swing speed. My swing speed is only around 90 to start with so 20+ yards is welcome. PXG discount their pricing oftentimes where you can purchase new clubs for a great price.

    This is the exact swap I made 4 weeks ago. Had my G2 for 20 years and loved it, never thought tech could really improve my driving, but I was wrong. I've gained 20 yards and consistently hit the same baby draw even off centre. Can't wait to hit it in warm weather with firm fairways. Game changer! Love the videos, could you do one to explain how changing loft and lie affects ball flight as I'd like to go to 9 degrees but at the range it's producing a fade..
    thank you 😊

    Between the modern ball, maxed out drivers, fitness, modern efficient swing theory, and launch monitor dialing in of ideal numbers it's no wonder everyone is hitting it so far these days on the pro tours. I bet those numbers would be alot closer if they had the same shafts though.

    • @nomorenonsense
      @nomorenonsense 10 місяців тому +1

      100 percent. That pro launch shaft is very spinny. No one ever takes an old driver head and places a high kick low spin shaft in. If that spin can be brought down to 2300 they would be the same.

      @@nomorenonsense I think your right, the argument I always hear is dispersion is so much better on new drivers yet the G2 in this case had better dispersion. I wonder what the numbers would be with the same shafts and a low spin ball being used with the G2. Might get some more distance.

    I use an old titanium driver without the 'trampoline' face....just normal roll which works well to straighten out miss hits using the 'gear effect'. I do think the 'trampoline' faces ARE longer when you hit them in the middle...but worse on the miss hits which you've seemed to prove here Matt. For me...hitting the middle of the fairway is more important than gaining one club in distance.

    I used and still have tucked away a Mizuno MP001 driver with a fixed glued head and it might not be quite as long but with the "smaller" head speed increases plus it goes straighter due to spin as your tests show. So how much has driver development helped and at what cost? Yes more "forgiveness" across a larger face but it's easier to find the centre of a smaller object than a larger one. BUT we will be told the latest releases will be longer straighter more "forgiving" than any previous models so pre order and BUY our model.

    So half a yard in length a year but a loss in accuracy. If you were fitting someone how much length would you give up for increased accuracy, or how much accuracy would you give up to gain length? Still as long as we all believe next years model will be so much better, despite pretty much everything being at the legal max now the manufacturers have nothing to worry about. I wonder if we will see one youtube review saying next years model is worse than this years? Great review BTW.

    The modern drivers have much larger misses in the hands of weekend golfers. I still use a titanium driver from 2004 and watch all my amateur friends looking for their ball offline and hitting provisional balls from the tee. Best drive vs best drive yes I am 10 yards behind them but on average I am better off because I have control and no fear of hitting my old driver on tight holes. How far have we come in 20 years? The elite amateurs and professionals have really benefited because of their superior ball striking. How far have weekend golfers come? Simply miles offline

    From my understanding there was a period of time that cor limit on driver face was 0.86 from 2003-2008. If some of these older drivers were .86 vs the now .83 they would still be very competitive but not "legal" to play? 86% efficiency will still be pretty competitive vs 83%. If they were both measured to see if their CT/COR numbers were comparable.

    You have to do these tests with a couple of amateur golfers, maybe an 8 and an 18 handicap. Thats where we will see the real benefits and advances. @@MrB77.6 By the numbers and what a fitter would put you into would be a stiff shaft. Your 454 with a regular will be very soft but if your timing is good will produce some good clubhead speed. Your 454 will also stock be an inch shorter than the modern drivers. Just an attempt by manufactuers to get more clubhead speed to try and show better numbers. I was a custom club fitter for many years and even some long driver guys are going down to softer shafts now. Softer shafts will create more clubhead speed but overall your margin pattern should be a little more spread. I wouldn't give up on a ping driver just yet. Just shows its the person swinging the club, not the equipment. as long as golf remains a fasion show they will always sell new drivers for £500 year on year. Im mean come on, the “turbluators” what the fuxx do they actually do😂😂

  • @bluenose8442
    @bluenose8442 10 місяців тому

    Pointless for high handicappers to spend £500+ on a driver. Yes they’ll get more distance but if that gain is only, say, 20 to 30yards is it really worth spending that kind of money? I will never spend that much. That said, I buy decent second hand Drivers. Good value for money and good yardage. Tech has come a long way but if every year a new driver delivers to claims of an extra 20 yards, then 400 yards extra on top of the original 200 yard drives will be common place. 600 yard drives?…. 😂😂😂😂. No way can that happen so no way driver improvements over 20 years can can give more than a few yards extra. Turbulators…..a word created by the Marketing dept. Style over content. 11 yards better overall in 20 years on this video. 11 yards…..

    I hope the PING designers see this video and get rid of the damn turbulators for all future drivers since they do NOTHING and look hideous.

    Genuinely dull video. I don't get the point of this, no one's going to be going back to a G2 and we know every new driver every year is basically the same thing.
