  • We get lots of questions about the removal of the RAM (radar absorbent material) on Stealth #833. Check out the short video on how its done. A huge shout out to the Demil team at Tonopah. You guys rock! Our Country and the aircraft community in general owe you all a huge thank you for the way this airframe was preserved.
To check out more secrets for #833 check the link below for exclusive viewing experience dates to see the plane as it moves thorough it's restoration process.
Each experience lasts 90 minutes and will feature a different Skunk Works Expert or F-117 pilot to interpret the airplane, and will include a different Limited Edition T-Shirt from each experience, and a chance to look inside the cockpit for each session. There will also be plenty of photo opportunities! Each experience will take place in the evening at 5 PM.

Zoinks, this brings back memories. Removing, cleaning, replacing that RAM. In some of the "before" shots I can see where the RAM had been replaced. #833 being toward the end of production, wonder if it had the "thinner" layer of RAM.

Looks like soda blasting as a media. Curious why you don’t use a blaster with a vacuum shoe to collect the media and paint especially on such a relatively flat surface. Make clean up so much quicker and you could recycle the media and filter out the paint/ram.

They don’t use a blaster with a vacuum shoe to collect the media and paint especially on such a relatively flat surface because they know exactly what they are doing through years of skilled experience working on the F-117 at the Tonopah Test Range.

I wanted to learn what media is used for removing the old paint, and will it have the same paint as it did from the factory.

Thanks for your question. They use a fairly aggressive media to take the RAM off. In terms of finish it will have a close to a factory finish/color as we can get once it goes on display

@@gcm747 they prob doing want any RAM getting into the hands of a bad actor so they will mostly just strip the paint and paint it with a normal black to replicate

This is NOT a restoration. This is actually a dumbing-down-for-display. A lot of the authenticity and the patina are being lost by this primitive stripping and re-painting process. If you look at the old NASA Apollo gear that has flown to the moon and back you will find that its surfaces are able to tell stories. There is depth and authenticity through the subtle color difference, the reflectivity and the wear patterns. *All of this will be lost* with the approach shown here. Probably on purpose but still a real pity.

I don't normally respond to comments on our pages but this one is so far off the mark that I cant ignore it. First and foremost - everything - in a Museum setting has been treated/and or stabilized for display. None of this equipment was designed with longevity in mind or museum viewing. In some cases that may mean a protective coating or an air tight casing to preserve the artifact. in other cases coatings and/or paint and items are removed as they are toxic and would be a danger in a viewing environment. In the case of the F-117's the RAM is not suitable for public display and secondly both the RAM and the leading and trailing edges are still classified. Again, this is not uncommon with retired military gear - it is done each and every time an item goes to a Museum for display. The removal of the RAM is not "primitive" - its actually been researched and supervised by a highly skilled crew by the USAF. We are working to bring the aircraft back to an operational look to include wear and tear and the appropriate markings on the plane.- that's safe for viewing. So the notion that any of these planes are rolled off the flight line, the chalks slipped in, and poof you've got an exhibit is false. Where it be a NASA artifact or a combat aircraft thousands of hours and thought go into the display so that the artifact is preserved for generations to come..

@@fredbell6237 Thanks for taking the time to respond to my comment. I'm fully aware of the things you are mentioning but in essence, you are confirming my conclusion (or not disputing it): by "stabilizing" compounds with a non-transparent medium, you are making information disappear. And obscuring sensitive (classified) areas, you are also removing information (this time on purpose). So my argument holds: a restoration (like for scientific purposes) and a paint job "for display" are fundamentally different and while the latter might be required here the end result is still far away from a truly involving (multi-sensory) experience.

I was just there on Saturday and the docent mentioned that another reason for the removal of the RAM coating was it’s toxicity. It’s currently stripped down to the bare aluminum, but there is a display case next to the jet that shows what it will look like when painted matte black again. Glad I got to see it up close.
