  • Long time crown vic owners can attest to all the things that I mention on this video. In my case ive had every single one of these fail in more than 1 crown vic.
    Hopefully this video can save you some headaches down the road and remember, most of these problems can be avoided with proper car maintenance.

      bought a 2001 crown vic new and had it 15 years and 173000 miles. none of these things failed. The coil packs routinely failed and the front wheels fell off within 2000 miles of each other (ball joints).

      According to Ford the intake manifold problem was from 1996 to 2001 in 2002 they fixed the problem. As far as transmission eventually all transmissions will go out in any vehicle if you take care of them they will last a lot longer and do the maintenance on the transmission. Good video though.

    I have personally experienced 2 of these issues, the window regulator and the intake manifold. Both happened within 6 months of each other. The AC and transmission are still holding up. Also the intake manifold isnt due to abuse, its because Ford made the intakes out of plastic that breaks when it gets old and brittle

    Just a disclosure. You do NOT need to tear apart almost the whole engine to replace an intake manifold on the 4.6 in a pantherbody. There are plenty of videos of people doing intake manifolds in crown vics. It's a weekend job averaging 4 to 6 hours, not an easy one but not a hard one.

      I'm a big, fat guy with chubby fingers and limited reach because my belly gets in the way. I was able to replace the intake manifold in 6 hours on my Grand Marquis. That includes running to the parts store for a belt tensioner I discovered wasn't springing back, and searching for needed wrenches that weren't in the toolbox where they belong. All together, I think it cost $170.

    Just picked up a 2011 P71 / P7B 2 weeks ago and my window regulator cable broke yesterday morning. Brought the car into my works shop after hours and noticed the cable snapped right at the ball. I was able to repair it in 2.5 hours start to finish just until the new replacement regulator comes in today. Great video!

    Another common fault on these cars is the blend door actuator. It's a little electric motor that adjusts the HVAC temperature when you turn the knob from hot to cold. It went on mine and I was able to change it without messing with the dash. All you need to do is remove the dash trim above the glovebox, remove the passenger air bag, the HVAC duct going to the passenger side dash vent, and cut away a small section of firewall insulation above one of the screws. Use a super low-profile ratchet (I used a GearWrench bit ratchet with an 8mm nutdriver that I ground down to shorten it) and be patient. If you look elsewhere on youtube, you'll find people doing everything from removing the dash entirely, to drilling holes in the top of the dash and removing the screws with a 2ft extension. Don't be those people.

    Being a proud ('02')Crown Victoria owner for the better part of my life I can say in all honesty you were top dead center on every one of these! Although I have to also say it took me twice as long to watch your video being that I had to keep replaying and watching in disbelief the part where you say the intake manifold can cost up to $1,500 to have fixed at a mechanic shop!!! GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY!! I recently flushed my radiator, which was when I noticed water and steam coming from the thermostat housing area. Having lost my previous car(95' Chevy Corsica) to a blown head gasket and water in the oil due to a similar problem, I immediately parked my vic until I could properly address and fix the problem. And how glad Iam in choosing to fix it myself. All parts and a few specialty tools, total setback was under $500. As to the mechanic who would've worked on my car had I only possessed half a brain and a grand or two to spare- Dear mechanic, please enjoy kindly fucking yourself, as you WILL NOT be fucking me! Listen here, not just Vic owners but ALL drivers in general- KNOW YOUR VEHICLE! Know how it works, what it needs, familiarize yourself with tools, good quality parts, and learning a few safety tips won't hurt(pun intended)and you'll always know how to fix it yourself rather than taking it to some greasy ass shop and having them bend you over a tool box only for God knows what kind of drunken or drug addicted moron that can't even count bolts, working on the thing that carries your very life down the road. Depending on your profession or how much spare time you have, it may not pay but it sure as hell saves! Iam currently working on saving $ and gathering tools and parts for my next big job, transmission swap. I'm going to find an old mustang trans and convert to stick and I'd like to make a video of the transformation. I'm sorry for the essay of a comment, I had to pour my heart out a bit, with a great vid and a subject like this I can talk till my tongue falls out lol. I enjoy your vids and your channel and am definitely subscribing. Happy cruising!

    I was lucky with my Crown Victoria because the previous owner only put 1,500 miles on it every year (the car currently has 83,000). Plus the department it came from was a small department and saw little action, and amazingly they had good maintenance records. Hopefully my car will not run into these issues for a long time.

      I don't know where this gentleman is located, or either one of you. But here in the Midwest, intake manifolds tend to crack. It may be from an improper antifreeze/water mixture or short heating/cooling cycles, whatever it is, it's frequent out here.

    • @moonbounce
      @moonbounce 7 років тому +2

      Steve Elich I had 7 Crown Vic PI's through Wisconsin winters and summers and never cracked a manifold. The only issues I had with any of them was one of them broke the exhaust manifold bolts and one of them had to have an oil cooler replaced.

    • @steveelich2080
      @steveelich2080 7 років тому +1

      b conover i don't doubt that, but that's your personal experience. From reading the comments, it seems like there's about a 50/50 chance of your manifold cracking. Again, there could be a myriad of reasons as to why some crack and others don't. All I really know, is mine was cracked and I replaced it.

  • @aj1201

    On AC issue , often it can be the blend door actuator which is difficult to reach, loosen dash, remove passenger side air bag,vents, glove box, etc. and replace the $50 blend door actuator. Very expensive at a shop due to labor. Difficulty level Ultrapro, lol.

  • @TonyKaz

    The A/C vacuum cables are under the dash right above the hump at the firewall. The black line which does come from the engine compartment is the control vacuum. If you don't have electronic climate control (most CVPI's don't, they have the round manual dials) then it is easy to see if the control vacuum is the problem by hooking up a vacuum meter to the black line going into the climate control . It should be a steady 15 to 20. If that vacuum is present then hook a pump with a meter to the climate control and give it a few pumps to get to 20. it should hold the vacuum when the A/C and heater is off. if the vacuum goes down, there is a leak in one of the lines. I had a leak somewhere before the firewall and had to splice in a line to replace the one that comes through the firewall. I also had a leak between the firewall and the coupling to the climate controls so I ended up replacing that line too (same line just is in 2 parts). Don't make the mistake i did and replace the blend door actuator when you actually have a vacuum problem. Blend door can be a hassle and eat a lot of time or money (depending on whether you DIY it or have a mechanic do it).

    I must be fairly lucky. I bought my P71 with 97K on it and in 3 years have added another 45K...but have not experienced any of these problems.
    BTW, I thought the intake manifold was revised at some point because it was cracking. The revised manifold doesn't have the plastic at the backside.
    My father owned a 79 Mercury Zephyr that went 160K before it needed a rebuild, and that was because it wasn't serviced the last year or 2 before it started to slip. Perhaps having the transmission fluid checked and drained and refilled would keep the transmission in service longer?

  • @timothyfay1209
    @timothyfay1209 5 років тому +2

    I have owned two Grand Marquis in the past, a 2001 and 2003. Both had the intake manifolds fail after the ten year mark. The window regulators failed in both as well. The transmission never had an issue on either of these cars, which I drove until 185K and 163K respectively. I realize they don't have the police transmission and were probably treated better. However, I bought both of these cars with around 40K and did have the fuel pump fail on each one before 50K.
    I currently own a 2009 CVPI with 118K. This car has the vacuum hose issue causing Max AC to flow out the defrost instead of the vents. The driver window regulator just failed. The intake manifold is due to fail now that it is at the ten year mark. I am hoping the transmission bucks the trend here and remains trouble free. I have a friend with a 2011 CVPI that has 240K and no transmission issue so far.

    Having owned 5 of these things, Amd worked on many more. Here’s what always breaks: starter motor, intake manifold,blend door actuator, Odometer failure. I do see transmissions fail but not super often, window regulators are also another common failure but not on every car. If you live where there’s road salt, you’ll also always have broken and rusted manifold studs that will tick. These cars are great but they do have their own issues

    • @potatohead1423
      @potatohead1423 2 роки тому +1

      Back in the old days, starters would go bad gradually, giving a warning as if to say "Hey replace me!" Sometimes it would click, click, start. Sometimes it would crank slow. Sometimes the motor would crank but not engage the flywheel. The good ol' days. The newer starters on the 4.6's seem to fail suddenly and completely with no warning whatsoever. It will start right up in the morning, then leave you stranded at work in the evening. My 2004 and 2007 both did this. No amount of tapping would make it turn over "one last time." It was AAA tow guy to the rescue.

    Here's my top four list:
    1. Heater Vacuum Control Motor (located behind ashtray below dash - makes whistle noise)
    2. Idle Air Control Valve (causes a trumpet noise when bad)
    3. Intake manifold gasket failure (you don't need to disassembler the entire motor).
    4. Bracket holding service light in trunk tends to break due to brittle plastic.

Another thing you didn't mention, at least for the older ones, is the HEATER CORE. When I accelerated huge swathes of evaporated coolant and/or liquid coolant came from under the dashboard, and left a film-y substance on the windows. It also left a fruity taste in my mouth (not good at all for my health I know) but that was a $200 easy fix.

    “Last until the end of time”
    Same man has to go through five of them hoping to get a good one!
    The legend is bigger than the car, but in the end it is still a car that will break down at some point. Transmissions are like brakes, eventually the friction material wears away. An $800 transmission job is destined for a short life, pay more and get a quality remanufactured unit. It is true that Ford upgraded the intake manifold design, but if you are experiencing coolant loss the intake manifold gasket may be leaking at the back of the engine.

    The 2003-2004's in particular have troublesome LCM's. The headlights will simply TURN OFF while driving when the relays heated up. You could pull the directional in to get momentary hi-beam, but that was just dangerous. Ford's recall solution was some sort of bypass cable or something. But they had a HUGE wait time for the part. I mean how many people can afford to just STOP using their daily driver for 3-5 MONTHS?? I took out the LCM and replaced the 4 relays inside. The relays are rated 10 amps, I installed 16 amp relays. That was 4 years ago and I haven't had any issues since.

    My 06 has had a few, my trans grenaded at 137,000 but I rebuilt it (direct clutch was fried, got the case sleeved) but don't forget the LCM (lighting control module) which most likely will fry, the wipers will go haywire due to moisture in the housing of the motor, and of course the radio will start tuning itself and just kind of doing what ever it wants.

    The transmission indicator pops out of place so the red needle doesn't move to indicate P R N D etc. It's an easy easy fix but it's common. I bought my current one with 140k and it has that issue and the switch is bad that causes the car to not start in park at times, gotta put in neutral to start. My last Vic was a p71 but never in service, just a driver and it went over 300k with only 1 of these issues and that was the intake. No failed window motors, no HVAC issue, nothing. Car was a gem until it was stolen and totalled.

    We got a 2009 Crown Vic at the police auction in GC, KS for $600.
    The only reason people didn't bid on it is because it was a K-9 unit and it was full of urine and hair and didn't start. When we got it home, we got it started and it only had 75000 miles and drove like a dream.
    We replaced the carpet, fiberglassed the antenna holes, painted it all black, cleaned the seats up, replaced the back seat and gave it a tune up.
    All the other ones at the auction went for triple what we paid and had twice the miles, we got super lucky. Loved that beast

    Yes! Have a 1997 town car, and my regulator failed with the window down 1/2 way. Not a good experience if it's cccold outside. Luckily, it was springtime, but if it's raining, not so good. I replaced the power window motors on a '86 tc, and had to wrestle with it for almost an hour. They had that regulator with multiple arms, and one of the arms slipped out of the track. What a pita! The multiple arms were used because of the little vent window came down first, then the main window. Replacing the motor was easy if you knew where to drill the 2 holes in the metal subframe to access the bolts. Also a good idea to spray dry silicone spray on everything the window rubs against, and because that is the most used window (toll $). I also experienced intake manifold leak/failure on the front of the manifold. Took it to a shop because air had gotten into the coolant. They flushed and filled it, took it for a ride and... Hydro-lock! I've got the bent connecting rod and over heated wrist pin to prove it. Big PITA and a 4 figure bill. There was a recall, but it was expired when that happened. I'd like to show them where they can shove their (100% fail) plastic manifold. End of rant.

    My '07 was overheated when my X was driving it and engine fried. Replaced it with an '06 engine out of a TC, replaced the timing chain and guides and resealed it before it went in. Don't overheat these engines! I did replace the intake on my '96 though. My blend door actuator went bad but fortunately I live in AZ and it's stuck in the AC position so not a big problem. My ABS modulator also went bad and I plan to replace. Brakes work normally but no ABS capability but again, in AZ roads are mostly dry so not an issue.

    I think the intake is guaranteed to fail at some point in these cars that’s pretty true as are the windows. I’m an owner of 4 of these cars and I’ve replaced the intake & a few window regulators. However I’ve never had a vacuum leak as you’ve said and I’ve never had any transmissions issues. Our 98 has 245,000 miles all on original tranny and it still runs beautifully. Maybe you’ve just had bad look in that department.

    Hey, I just bought my first cv, a1998 lx, on the recommendation(more like a push) from my boss for a daily driver.
    It has 160k miles and it has rust in the rear wheel wells and some on the doors.
    It's been beaten up. I got it for$1000.
    I did new rotors and brakes, pitman and idler arm, lower control arms, sway bars, tune up and exhaust leaks. I've had it for almost a year and I really love this car, I gotta say, should I keep putting more money into it?
    Or just buy a newer grand marquis?
    The car is rusted but it runs sweet to me, I've taken it on four hour trips and love it.
    Should I keep it up?
    Should I fix the body?
    Should I invest in a newer version of this engine?
    Should I prepare for some serious mechanical probs?
    I'm asking because I don't know much about cars, but I know I love my crown Vic and feel fortunate to have this workhorse.

    My exhaust manifold never failed, but my mechanic warned that it was common, and replaced it as a precaution when he had the top of the engine apart for something else. Cut me a hell of a deal...all told I was in for maybe $275 for parts and labor, with him tearing it all down. My 2000 Town Car had 70k miles. The rear window regulator just went out 2 days ago at 110k. I've never heard of transmission issues from any source, though I don't have any evidence to the contrary, I just hope mine lasts.

    My intake manifold broke EXACTLY as you described about this time last year. $1050 repair. If coolant blew all over the engine, go ahead and replace the coil pack: ALL of them. They will start to fail, one by one, because they got wet. Lighting control module: recall. Door control module: $250. I also had to replace the rear air suspension compressor a couple of years ago. The inside of the car smelled like a dead, burnt animal. Automatic climate control module: $500 (covered by extended warranty).
    Had to replace the window switches, as well as the mirror control. Easy, inexpensive fix. A word to the wise: when removing the door switches, pry the panel loose from the FRONT, not from the back ! You'll break it, and a replacement is difficult to find. I love my CV Sport, and had driven Fords for over 30 years, but my CV Sport has cost me more money in repairs that all of my other Fords combined !

    1. My intake manifold cracked because it had the original version which has one of the coolant crossover duct was all plastic. The new version has this duct metal reinforced. 2. Did have the AC vacuum lines crack and same problem as described in the video. 3. Did have the window failure described in the video. 4. Did have a transmission issue due to the 2nd gear solenoid failure, which is due to the fact that this is the solenoid most frequently engaged during driving. Replaced this and all other solenoids in one single transmission job and problem solved. Eventually all the upper and lower arm bushings will fail and it is just easier top replace all the arms. Similarly, several front end components will fail like the pivot arm, etc. That is just regular wear and tear. The rubber valve stems wore out and instead of replacing these, I took the whole engine apart and replaced all wear sensitive parts like bushings and piston rings. The engine fan and the radiator will also fail eventually as well as alternator and starter. These are just parts that will fail on any car close to 300 thousand miles. I do replace the engine oil and transmission fluid at specified intervals such that my engine internals and transmission are always properly lubed with fresh fluids. If you don not change transmission fluids at regular intervals, eventually your transmission will fail. You need to always have fresh transmission such that it keeps its detergent properties effective. If you allow the transmission fluid to remain unchanged and age within your transmission nit will develop partial clogs due to degradation of the fluid due to heat. Once that happens, if you do drain the old fluid and replace with fresh transmission fluid, then the fresh detergent will dislodge those clogs and these will circulate through the transmission eventually clogging the ducts fully and your transmission will fail catastrophically )This applies to all car transmissions.
    Mine is Grand Marquis with the air suspension. Rear boots will fail and can be replaced with limousine grade Kevlar boots. These last forever. When the rest of the system give problems I just prefer to replace with Crown Vic rear springs. No big difference imo. Front springs will loose effectiveness and will need to be replaced at very high mileage.
    These cars are awesome. Mine will be 20 years old next year 2019 and it is good as new. I never had to buy a new car in 20 years.

    My '95 had a weird issue. When parked, engine off, the blower motor would randomly just start running full blast. It didn't matter what speed the knob was at or whether or not the selector was even on or off. After a few minutes, it would stop. It wasn't the radiator fan, it was the heater/AC blower for sure. It had the standard knobs, not the fancy digital automatic climate control. If you put the key in and turned to RUN, it fan would go back to whatever setting the knob was at (hi, lo, off, whatever.) The car succumbed to New England road salt cancer before I could ever figure that glitch out.

I drove to a junk yard, pulled an intake, went out to my car in the parking lot, pulled mine and put the new one on and I was gone 3 1/2 hours total. That was drive time included. FYI the ones I have seen that are cracked all do it next to the thermostat housing and manifold area. Intakes are fine after the 96 model year. Thats an urban legend for the newer cars...
    Window regulators go bad on all modern cars that lack gears
    The AC failure is NOT from the vacuum line itself but the O ring inside the unit. Ford makes it very difficult without soldering skills to gain access to the o ring, but its doable.
    The transmission is the one bullet proof thing on the Panthers. They will keep going to a million miles. If you drive it with no fluid or once you do the J mod, then you end up with problems.
    The biggest problems Crown Vics will have, is rust. And with rust, comes broken ground straps. Starters will also fail, as many did not come factory with all three bolts, and other smaller issues.

    If you replace the intake manifold with the aluminum crossover and reinforce it with Copper RTV, you will not have a problem with coolant leaking. You DON'T have to take apart the entire engine, don't be ridiculous. All you need to do is take the throttle body and plenum off, some evap stuff and move some hoses out of the way, then the ignition coils, drain out the coolant and you can easily take it off and replace.

    You mentioned transmission failure as a problem. My 89' started slipping because of a broken plastic bushing on the linkage that controls the trans modulator valve. When it breaks the link is inoperative and falls loose. If you drive the car in that condition the clutches WILL burn up. It's an easy and cheap fix. It's happened to me twice in 144,000 miles. The only settings that work properly are vent A/C and defrost. Also the temperature knob I don't know what's wrong the heat is blistering hot even in the middle between hot and cold and even whe slightly into the cold is that why my A/C isn't that strong because it's mixing in the hot air from the heater core?
