Why THE BATMAN Feels Soulless

  • Is it too late to give my thoughts on The Batman.
Already one of 2022’s biggest films, The Batman for many has toppled The Dark Knight and others to be crowned the best comic book movie of all time and to some, this film has become their overall greatest film of all time.
And there is some merit for why people would consider those two options because even though I have a couple problems with this film, what Matt Reeves and his creative team did on this movie is a technical masterpiece.
Directing, cinematography, and score. This movie is made by people at the highest level in their craft.
And when I first watched The Batman, I did enjoy the movie. I liked the casting of Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano and so many more.
But if there is no one then there comes a point in this 2 hour 50 minute movie, where I ask the question, why should I continue to care?
And that was the problem I had with the story of The Batman. Why should I care for any of the characters if there aren't any emotions I can attach myself to?
This was a question that was on my mind after the first time I watched The Batman.
Then I watched it a second time. About a week later.
And I figured out why this movie felt so cold and detached from the audience and essentially soulless.
The reason is the character of the Riddler.

What did you guys think of The Batman?

I really really didn't like it. It felt so joyless and humorless. I feel like dressing up as a bat to punch people is inherently a silly or tragic thing. The further directors try to go from the inherent humor of the concept, the worse things are. Ironically, the part that made me sorta realize it was gonna be one of -those- adaptations was when they showed catwoman's beanie with the sewing made it look like she had little cat ears. They were terrified to have any hint of humor or levity and the movie felt like a slog

@@TriggerCrazedLunatic I understand your point of view, but if you read the source material (the main comics or graphic novels from the past 30 years) it is not supposed to be humourous. There are superheroes who lend themselves more to the joyful, funny side of things such as Spider-Man . However unless it is a parody (like the Lego Batman movie which I loved), directors who make a Batman movie that is too funny are basically missing the point and they should do a movie about a different comic book character.

I had the opposite response. I felt enormous emotion expressed in Robert Pattinson's eyes - when he had the mask on. And maybe that's a way that it's different from other Batmans. The Bruce Wayne is often where we connect emotionally, but in this case, Bruce is empty. When he wears the mask, he is full of feeling.
I agree about The Riddler. He was cold, and then yelled a lot. There could have been more done to pull at his motivations as deeply justified emotionally.

The Soul isn't in the individual players, it's in the setting. Gotham itself is the character that is having the true crisis.

I heavily disagree. The movie is highly emotional. Batman here is the most emotional that we´ve ever seen the character. If you weren´t emotionally invested to them, that´s fine. But saying there aren´t any emotions, that´s false

There is so much emotion in The Batman. I can't see how one can just miss it unless they aren't paying attention.

I’ve seen this film twice and honestly…. This is the tone they are going for.
It’s suppose to feel this way.

The title of the video made me skeptical but I cannot deny that the slight change you suggest would have elevated the movie to another level.

I don’t think you get the point of the movie. You’ve definitely thought about and deconstructed it to develop an opinion but you’re kinda missing the bigger picture.
The movie is about ideas and how to use them.
In The Batman we have this new take on Bruce Wayne. He’s a lonely little shut-in who looks and acts like he’d spend 18 hours a day on Reddit if he didn’t have billions of dollars. He’s awkward talking to people, doesn’t want to go out, all he cares about is being Batman. When he is Batman he’s completely different. He’s confident, assertive, etc. It feels like his true self when he puts on the mask and goes out to be vengeance. He is vengeance for everyone who’s lost people to the scum of the streets because that’s exactly what happens with him.
And then we have Riddler, this perfect villain for the story. Instead of the played out Joker being the antithesis to Batman’s worldview, Riddler mirrors everything he is perfectly. He is also vengeance. He also suffered as a child because of terrible people and he also exists now not for some selfish reason, but because he genuinely believes he is helping people who’ve been wronged. He’s also a lot like Bruce in that the mask is his real personality. Once he’s been arrested he’s awkward and as much as he tries to be intimidating he just comes off as a guy who crawled out of /pol/. He creates a situation where Bruce has to sit back and think about what he is, what he’s doing, and eventually he realizes that he can’t be just vengeance. He’s already a hero, and a great one at that, but he has to be something more or all he is is another Riddler. By the end of the movie he goes from indifference to the guy on the subway he saved from robbers, to wading in water to help the victims of the flood. He becomes a symbol for the people of Gotham, not just vengeance.
I really do love this movie. Every actor did an amazing job and everyone working on production from the director to the gaffers expertly constructed a perfect setting for this clash of ideas. Catwoman didn’t need to exist but besides that it was incredible and I hope that if the film market absolutely has to be dominated by comic book films then they at least take this direction

Let me be blunt, the only people who are saying this are white men. They are the only ones whose opinions I've heard and they are the only ones lauding this movie as the second coming. I'm not saying the movie is bad or that women and poc hate it. I'm saying that there are a lot of white men who love it who are desperately trying to hold on to the idea that white male superheroes are still relevant, so I'm inclined to give some of their opinions the side-eye. Don't get me wrong, I really do love Batman as a character, and have seen every iteration of Batman since the 80s, and I'm going to watch it at some point, but there isn't a single thing in any of the trailers I've watched that have prompted me to spend any money on this movie in a theater.
