thanks! That was my first ride on it, its so much better now after I adjusted the clutch and put a way bigger sprocket on the rear. Went from a 39t to a 47t for the dirt
That was a hell of a ride on a 40 plus year old bike. Watching that I felt all those bumps, rocks, logs and drop-offs with every muscle in my arms, legs, spine and testicles!
Cool video man! I got a 1982 XL500 project that I've been working on all year. I got a bunch of videos up for it and i've been running a great pipe and jetting setup that has her sounding so beefy. These bikes will go forever if you just give them a little TLC. Keep up the vids man! I love that bike.
Thanks! I love it too. I'm gonna check out that jetting video, I've been really wanting to swap my carb to a single pull cable style. It's taken everything I've thrown at it, even over/under jumping mx triples. All with headlight, turn signals and the stock 23in front tire. Sure don't make them like they used to
@@GasGasRider619 oh dude I feel the same. I hate the twin line butterfly carbs. I got a spare 38mm lectron in my shop that I’m gonna try and trade in back ti the company to get a discount on buying a new 1 line slide carb. I’m holding off till I get a new top end to do that tho.
@@GasGasRider619 a trick that I found with the XL carbs is to use washers to make needle adjustments. The Xl carb needles aren’t adjustable like the XR Model is so by throwing some washers below the needle you can richen it up a touch!
@@madjack_757 ya I'm pretty close on the jetting and it runs good I just don't like the way it feels when you let off throttle, if you roll off real easy its fine but a sudden release at speed and it dam near throws me over the bars. I've read that guy's have really good luck running an older mikuni vm38 from a 2 stroke. I guess if you order a new one from Sudco with the 4 stroke jetting they really wake the bike up. A Lectron for it is probably the best solution though.
I know the feeling, I've got an 85 xr350 that has won me more races than any bike I own. I've been looking for a 500 of the same era for years now. So far the older XL is as close as I've gotten
the old girl does great keeping up with the modern bikes! nice riding! those trails look awesome by the way

That's what I thought before I rode it but honestly it's like riding a couch. The seat has like 4.5 inches of soft foam that helps a ton
Stop telling lies lad
And i am still in love with my 82 mod. Had her all this years 😎

@@GasGasRider619 huh interesting, like does the engine braking slow it down too fast and throw you over or what happens?
very cool ❤XL500😊
How I love these 500X&R's got a 84. I love that bike with all my heart ❤️

Those 23" front wheels weren't all bad, they got the job done :)
@@TheWhippetmaster ya I actually don't hate it. Just sucks there's only 1 tire you can buy for it
The mighty xl did good 👍👌 she just took it all in her stride.
So much torque
Ya it tractored around like crazy before I changed the gearing
@@GasGasRider619 how would it be for a cheap ish 65 mph two up adv rig
@@beardedrancher do able. But a 600 would probably be more comfortable for 2. The 500 has quite a bit lower seat height though
@@GasGasRider619 thank you.
1st gear was too long for my liking. I was always on the clutch when bush riding. Great bike though. Mine was a 1979.
This was my 1st ride on it. I've since changed the 39t rear for a 47. Made a huge difference
That bike won Baja. Over anything BMW offered. Do it some justice.
Wish there was some sand around here to play in. Gotta drive like 5hrs for the nearest dunes

cool..the S have 6 volt .-(::::
Yep. Mines missing the battery but there must be some sort of lighting coil because my headlight and turn signals still work if the bikes running
Nice and smooth good old xr power nice riding!!!!
U sure thats an xr?
