Breast Cancer & Fly Fishing - Casting for RECOVERY by Todd Moen

- For the 50th edition of Catch Magazine, T-Motion Theater presents a very special film called "River of Life." In 2015/16 Todd Moen captures the reflections of 3 women dealing with breast cancer while out fly fishing on the waters of the Pacific Northwest. The narratives of Barbara Schmierer, Trisha Campbell and Carol LaBranche connect the struggles of wild, native fish with the challenges these women face in their own lives, while also capturing the magic and joy of fly fishing. The film explores life's tenacity and its fragility. "River of Life" reflects ideas and feelings that most fly fishermen share, yet from a uniquely feminine perspective. Breast cancer is, for the most part, a feminine struggle. But when 1 in 8 women in the United States are afflicted, it touches everyone's lives. This film connects our human stories with the life and health of rivers, and it reminds us of what is beautiful in the world and how easily it can be lost.
River of Life is dedicated to Carol LaBranche, aged 56, who battled with cancer and passed away October 8, 2016 before the film was finished.
After her first bout with breast cancer, Carol decided to take on a new hobby…fly fishing. This grew to be one of her life's passions. This also led to the role of secretary with the Oregon Council of Federation of Fly Fishers. She was an instrumental part of getting Umpqua Valley Fly Fishers started in Roseburg, Oregon. Casting for Recovery was the next step in that fly fishing process. Her desire to help others and give back led to starting a retreat in Oregon for women with breast cancer.

Beautiful. My wife is a breast cancer survivor. Doing well so far regarding the cancer, but unfortunately developed CHF from the adriamycin used in chemotherapy. She went fly fishing with casting for recovery on Spruce Creek in Pennsylvania. Terrific program. Of three sisters, all three have had breast cancer. None tested positive for the BRCA gene, but are currently undergoing other genetic testing. The other two sisters also developed uterine cancer. One quite a few years ago and beat the odds, the other was post menopausal after breast CA, so had not had a hysterectomy. Currently all are disease free. My wife and I, and the other two sisters, have daughters. Fight the good fight.
What an inspiration these women are to me. Living life to its fullest flowing with adversity. Thank you
How can you give thumbs down to this video, It looks like they are cancer survivors and been through a lot, nice video ,I take my hat off to all you Ladies keep fighting !!!
This is one of the best films on fly fishing I've ever encountered. The story and the river are beautiful and the wisdom invaluable.
I just came upon this video. When people ask what it is about fly fishing, I just tell them the therapeutic qualities of it. We all have our reasons. To me it's a cleansing of my mind and my soul. Great video! Thanks for putting it together and sharing it.

Best wishes to these wonderful anglers. Thank you for making this.
Admiration to these women and others - plus Todd for the tribute. Even more personal? Seeing McKenzie home water. The Helfrich name my Dad spoke frequently. A Keith Steele boat - probably made by son Steve.
So miss the healing waters of the McKenzie & Greenwood Drive...

You said the truth. No matter how much a man can be Close to a wife, a girlfriend, a mother or a daughter..breast cancer is a woman struggle. We all know women are more strong than man, they cross a tears valley to give life and in their life they bear on their shoulders frustration, dissatisfaction, sadness and angry of man helping them to look forward and find a way to solve problems. And they use the most powerful weapons: patience an Love. We better learn from women. I think that our World would be a better place to live if man would leave main decisions to Women. This amazing video shows women strength and Beauty of fly fishing. I can't stop streams from my eyes..
Sad to see one dislike, God bless their souls
