PA stands for Physician Assistant, but our profession is in the middle of changing our name to Physician Associate. We are trained liked Doctors, but do not go to school as long as they do. In the United States, we diagnose, order labs/xrays, treat, and prescribe medicines.

I’m a chronic care RN that works for an excellent cardiology clinic for 3 years now and I LOVE cardiology. I’ve been a nurse for 17 yrs and this has always been my jam. This guy is spot on. We deal with mostly HF patients and monitoring effectiveness of BP and cardio meds, ect. For me there is nothing bettter❤️

It's always great to hear people in medicine say they love their job! I'm very happy for you that found cardiology all those years ago! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thank you for posting insight in the cardiology specialty. I will be applying to PA school next cycle and cardiology is a top interest of mine. I have a family health history of cardiovascular disease, so the cardiology specialty holds a personal connection to me. I can't wait to pursue medicine as a PA and maybe help patients with cardiovascular disease.

That’s great! Many people who have had personal or family experiences with health problems often go into medicine, and become excellent and passionate providers. I wish you all the best on your journey! By the way, I don’t know if you saw this video about electrophysiology, a related cardiology specialty. It may be of interest to you as well. What is it like working as a PA or NP in Electrophysiology (EP)?

You’re welcome! Did you see the one on working in Electrophysiology? I’ll put the link here. There are lots of different sub specialties within cardio. Here’s the link if you’re interested. Best wishes on your PA journey.

Starting rotations in Jan 2023 and I'm heavily interested in cardiology. This video provides so much insight and I love the interview format. Thank you!

So glad you liked it and found it helpful. Are you becoming a PA? If you haven't yet, don't miss the Electrophysiology interview too. Link: ua-cam.com/video/eaNT8gMBv5Q/v-deo.html. Also, I interviewed a PA who does courses on getting good at reading ECGs. She has many free sessions you can join, and then a more in-depth course for a fee. The video where I interviewed her about it can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/1EqprQ0-R68/v-deo.html. Best wishes on your journey into medicine!

Nice interview. Thank you for the info. Please help direct my path. I intend to go into APP cardio and would like to do procedures ( even occasionally). Your advice/guide will be appreciated.

Well, it really depends on what you are looking for. If strictly talking procedures, then probably Electrophysiology (EP) would be the best specialty to pursue. You can watch the interview about PAs/NPs in that field here: ua-cam.com/video/eaNT8gMBv5Q/v-deo.html. You could also could consider Interventional Radiology. That interview here: ua-cam.com/video/XSPzmKbHZDo/v-deo.html. Of course, the most direct hands on in cardio would probably be working with a cardiac transplant team or working in cardiothoracic surgery (CTS). PAs/NPs in CTS often independently harvest the saphenous vein in the leg while the cardiothoracic surgeon is working on the heart in bypass surgery. I don't have interviews for these yet. Remember, you don't have to immediately start in one of these area. You could start in any cardiology office and get a good grounding in cardiology. Once working in that field, you will come to understand what all the different options are and what really interests you. Hope this helps. Best wishes on your career!

Terrifying that they let you round a patient

I don't know if you are talking about me or the guest I am interviewing. We are both well-trained medical professionals, so why would it be terrifying?
