Yup. People say, "you must have a green thumb," I say "I've probably killed more plants than I have fostered but a garden is an experiment and you never know whether something will thrive unless you try it." I don't want people to give up just because they kill some plants, especially at the beginning.

Well then, I am growing as a gardener for sure because I kill something every year. This video was fascinating! It was so great to hear Tony Avent talk about those plants. I did not know about Juniper Level Botanical Garden. I will make it a point to check it out. Thanks so much for sharing this visit with Tony Avent. I learn so much when I watch these plant masters videos. Keep doing them!

Jim, you’ve just gone on my dream date. How wonderful to spend time to Tony. I’m a smarter person every time I hear him speak (and a poorer person every time the Plant Delights catalog shows up). This is a delightful video. Thanks for bringing us along, Jim.

This video is loaded with info, I had to take notes. Top three revelations ~ 1.) test of a superb gardener -- winter garden. 2.) be sure to check if a hellebore is sterile or not and 3.) I need a Solar Flare Holly in my life. Very motivating to see an expert (in any field) truly excited about what they do. Looking forward to the future videos you mentioned with Mr. Avent!

I love this video... love the attitude and honesty about gardening all year long. Giving lots of encouragement to get out in your garden and learn your environment and it's ok to fail, it's important to fail. I laughed out loud when Tony said.. 'put your pruning shears away , you're doing it because your neighbor is doing it' - and then I realized, he's right !!

When I was in horticulture at NCSU, I studied tests that had been completed by Tony. I had no idea who he was at that time. Later I became aware of who he was and marveled how he transformed the NC fairgrounds from a bland landscape, to a beautiful blossoming, magical place.
I’ve been to his gardens-they are beyond amazing. He is more than a horticulturalist, he’s a preservationist, landscape architect and artist. Thank you for this video, and thank you Tony for all you do!

I first visited Juniper Level last fall and will be there one of the upcoming weekends! I'm lucky because it's only 12 minutes from me. I was absolutely amazed at how many different kinds of plants they have, and maybe I could soak it all in after several years of visits. Even shopping the greenhouses, I was overwhelmed! (Also, that cat is really sweet; I've scratched his head myself.)

I have attended an open-house at Plant Delights Nursery- it is incredibly inspirational!!!! I bought two Voodoo Lilies that are more and more fascinating every year - they only bloom every 10 years, so probably 5 years to go… Mr. Avent is a passionate genius. It is unique to find both qualities in one person. Thanks for “introducing “ him to us Jim !!!

Was looking back through my Plants Delight catalog & this pops up!
I've finally propagated enough Fuschia Angel Earrings to consider killing one 😂
While I try to promote natives, I'm not a purist. Problem is, not all plant breeders are as conscientious as Tony & don't consider the invasive problems. I've battled too much Ligustrum, Wisteria & Ivy to become complacent with imported plants. I like that good folks are keeping an eye out for additions that wont eat the world.
    Great interview Jim & Tony!

I have to say it was funny about the no pruning thing and then Jim pointed out how he had cut some of the Holly for the pathway. I have bought a number of plants from Plant Delights that are very happy in my zone 6b country garden -- just wish there were more of Tony's treasures hardy in zone 6. I have to rip out my terrace garden in NYC (zone 7b) to do some roof repairs. One consolation is that I am going to replant with some of the zone 7 treasures you and Tony have. (Hauling many of the existing plants out to the country where they will be much happier in more sun.) Tony's nursery and gardens have long been on my must-visit list. My husband is commenting in the background that you guys sound even more enthusiastic about plants than Monty Don... Thanks again to you both for a great video.

Careful...just to ask for a fir from Turkey grown on the west coast doesn't mean it will grow here in the southeast. The reason why is because it will likely be grafted onto balsam or whatever for, few of which will grow here...Tony said his was a seedling so to succeed you would need it as a seedling or grafted onto a fir that will survive here...many will not live here....

There are several western Oregon growers who list it -- and multiple western Oregon growers who make their living shipping truckloads east.....
A garden center that brings in a load every spring could make it happen. But it won't be cheap.
