  • I found a cheap John Cooper Works Mini Cooper on FB Marketplace so I went and bought, sure it's been hit on every side but it runs, drives, and it was unbelievably cheap. Once I got it back to the shop I found out it was anything but a John Cooper Works, it just has a couple random JCW parts slapped on it.

    Okay,
    I'm a mini addict myself.
from 2007-2010 MINI produced this R56 with the N14 for the cooper S and the John Cooper Works.
The code for the engine is just slightly different: N14B16A for the S and N14B16C for the JCW.
from 2010-2013 MINI produced the LCI (facelift) R56 with the N18. Same story as above.
There was an option from factory to get the 'aero-kit'. With this kit your Cooper S would look the same as the JCW but you would still have the S type of the engine.
From 2007-2009 there was not a real JCW yet, the best thing you could get was the JCW tuning kit. This bumped the number from 174 hp to 192 hp and 240 Nm to 280 Nm.
With the JCW tuning kit you got an extra badge on your trunk/boot with the 'old style' JCW logo.
A normal JCW would only have the JCW logo on the back, it would not mention Cooper S anywhere.
If you need some more info, I can always try to help you out :)

      Addition to this:
The car in video is clearly only a Cooper S:
Normal Cooper S exhaust, no big Brembo Brake kit, no dark interior roof, no JCW logo in the inside and no JCW badge (instead of the Cooper S) …the headlights are from ebay 🙈

    • @renevara8899

Im sure most people already mentioned this but, The hidden glove box had a special emblem that most people miss. No logo under the bonnet on the airbox the lower grill had the jcw emblem. The boot never said cooper s it just had the jcw emblem. Exhaust tips never had jcw emblems. The floor mats were checkered (at least mine are), the middle gauge cluster was dark and not white inless you got the infotainment screen. Front Brakes had jcw logo on them.

Add 2011 to that. In 2011, the S version got the N18, but JCW apparently had engines left over for another year of production. That is a shame putting a much better engine in a lower level equipped car, and leaving your signature level with prior junk.

You could get the JCW aero body kit from dealer when buying the car new and should have JCW badge on the bottom of the steering wheel and red numbers on the gear knob along with JCW sill plates. You’ve got an R56 Cooper S with JCW kit.
The car sales place next to where I work in the UK has exactly the same spec car which I’ve been trying to buy off him for over a year but he won’t sell any of his scruffy cars!!!

Sadly, a blowout at the drag strip sent it into the wall, and then she went for a tumble. Completely totaled. Thankfully he walked away with just some scrapes and bruises though.

I actually have (2) One is a factory built JCW......The other is a clone I built out of a S. First I'm sure you know there are BMW VIN check/options websites.
There was for quite awhile JCW body kits you could purchase. At one time you could even order them to your paint code and painted at the factory. Pretty sure they are currently only available in primer.
Your R112 wheels are correct. But have the 'MINI' center cars. Should have JCW centers.
Lack of Brembo red brakes calipers and rotors. The rear calipers are the same on both. The S ones wont have the red paint....and there is a taller JCW bracket used to accommodate the larger rear rotors used on JCWs.
Most clones will still have the standard brakes.....along with the 'S' emblems on the front fenders. Many will still have 'S' emblems on the rear. In some cases if you look closely.....you can still see the outline of the Cooper S emblem in the level of paint fade.
Sunroofs. Most US spec S cars will have the sunroof. Most factory built JCWs will not have a sunroof. My factory built JCW has the (for it...rare) sunroof.
Muffler. Dead giveaway. Most (like yours) have what is called the beer can muffler. Looks like the bottom of a beer can. JCW cars will not have that rolled feature at the back of the muffler. Factory JCW mufflers will be just plain chrome tips. Factory JCW kit muffler will have a 'john cooper' logo embossed on the chrome tip.
As for JCWs. Many are correct factory built cars. Many are what is called a port built car. These were converted to 'JCWs' at the shipping port.
Glove box door should have a flag in corner. This little piece of trim can be purchased but is hard to find listed.
Door sills. 2 types of JCW door sill plates. One version plastic.......the other is stamped aluminum. IMO the aluminum are much nicer but they cost a bunch.
No wood trim in JCW. Typically piano black. Most S clones with black interior will still have gray A,B,C pillar trim with gray headliner. JCW would have black headliner and pillar trim. The wood trim with beige seats was a package.....but can't remember what it was called.
Odd the car does have the switch panel for rear fog lamps. Rare in US cars. US cars the dash switch is there.....but no chrome toggle switch part or night time indicator. The rear fog lamp wiring is there tucked in behind bumper skin and can be coded to work.
There are two versions of the front JCW bumper. They both have the same overall shape and look but the inserts etc are different. Not sure why they would spend the money to tool up a different version for the last few years.
Upper JCW grille has a different grille pattern to it vs S models. JCW lower grille matches this pattern. As for lower grille there are two versions. One with the brake cooling ducts.....one without. Good luck finding a lower JCW grille without the brake ducts. I think your stuck buying the brake duct version.
At the very end of production. There were some non turbo cars built with the JCW body parts. So theses cars have all the aero parts.....JCW wheels......but no Brembo brakes......no turbo.....no hood scoop..

That looks like a later R56 which would have came with the better N18 engine (Still being used by Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall, etc) The factory JCW would never have came with a Cooper S badge on the back, but you could get a factory fitted Aero kit (But that is different to the JCW design) or some dealers could hop up a car with JCW branded upgrades. The headlights look like aftermarket replacements, it's probably originally an H4 headlight car. The upgrade option was bi-xenon and a much better headlight for seeing in the dark. I'm not sure the beige interior and that style of seats were possible on a true JCW, but probably part of an option pack for the Mini, maybe a Chilli pack upgrade. For a part out car, you do have some good options, if the roof works that's a third of what you paid easily.

Volvo had a bad run for years with burning oil due to the oil rings and too small oil return holes in the pistons. As a lot of manufacturers were trying to squeeze out all the mpg they could get they used thin low tension rings.

My DIL spent more time with me driving to drop off/pick up her Mini 4 door than she did driving it seemingly. It was a really pretty car, thats why she bought it, but junk all the same. When they moved from OKC to Utah, my son traded it in for a Subau Forester SUV, not sure which year/exact model, but I was so glad they did that. The mini would have never made that drive to Utah. What ever car lot got that one surely beat them down on the trade-in value. I warned her about it and told her to get a mechanic to look at it. SHe asked her mechanic, and he just flat told her- "Don't Buy a Mini Cooper." He looked it over, told her to be sure to get an extended warranty. He also told her when she bought it not to bring it to him to fix it.He said he likes money, but didn't want to take her money for all the repairs. She was a bit miffed, but she figured it out after a few weeks of ownership, when it overheated. Plastic water pipe from the water pump cracked, more than once.

There was a JCW package that could be dealer installed to any S for $5K. That wouldn't show on a report. The car would still be an S.

That was pre 2009, since then MINI made them an actual model, so I think it may show up in the VIN.

That is a Scan Gauge. It's an old school OBDII code reader and aux gauge device. I've had mine for at least 15 years. You change the screens using small buttons on the back.
I would definitely prefer a standard S to a JCW. The Mini S is a blast to drive, but it is a pretty stiff ride and the JCW is even more so. Great for an autocross on a smooth parking lot, lousy for Midwest potholes and frost heaves. I would much rather get a nice S and spend the price difference on a tune to get JCW power without the stiffer suspension.

  • @boilerhousegarage
    @boilerhousegarage 8 місяців тому

You could buy an S with JCW trim. It's the "Works GP" version that has special trim, spoiler, wheels, etc that was exclusive for the car itself. Mini, especially here in the UK, have an options list that takes days to read and I've known many Cooper S to have JCW wheels and badges. It's probably for emissions or fuel differences, but the US spec ones seem to be a little less horsepower.

J.R. in my opinion I'm saying you have $6500.00 just in parts. Maybe more if you don't just sell the parts cheap just to get rid of them. Just looking during the walk around the interior door panels seats and dash is about 2500.00 maybe more for someone who has one that has been ragged out. Is the transmission housing been cracked or anything because the engine you said was worth about $4000.00 so I'm sure the transmission is worth a couple grand just because of what it is. Find someone wanting to change from an automatic to a manual and they are going to need the cluth pedal and all the mounting hardware for it so there is about $3000.00 just for that. Plus the color of the interior I'm sure someone would love to change theirs since that one is in such great shape so I think that is a very very good investment because if you do tear it down to where all the parts thats good you can make damn good money and when I say all good parts I mean even all the nuts and bolts. Someone out there is needing all those part for a project and your parts would be a gold mine for them. They could get a deal on the parts and you could sell them to what sounds cheap but it would fill your wallet up quite nicely plus you and them all are happy. I've done 3 BMW'S and made ridiculous money form them when I paid only a fraction of what I sold all the good parts for. Good luck buddy keep up the good work. (I'm jealous as hell you found that I'm not a mini person just never have had one or really drove one).

As far the as the door sills. If it was port installed body kit, they would get it wrong.
Lots of little things about these cars.
If it was dealer installed, they could get it wrong.
With the tuning kit if you add it, itll give you 200 plus horsepower.

That definitely looks like an S with the JCW appearance pack option at best. The most obvious thing from the outside that wouldn't likely get changed is the missing 4pot JCW-badged calipers.

It being a 2012 means it has the newer and better N18 engine that didn’t have all the issues the N14 engine from 2007-2011 did. N14s liked to kill timing chains, burn oil, and blow head gaskets. N18s will burn oil if you run the thinner 0w30 stuff in them. If you run 5w30, they don’t seem to.

JCW gets different brakes, brake disks, shifter/steering wheel/brake handle gaiter are contract stitching, exhaust and outlets are different. I think in the '12's you could get a leather dash. Front splitter might be different as well...can't remember. Gauge faces are dark gray if I recall.

Very fun car even if mine wasn't turbocharged. I'd own another one in a heartbeat

You weren’t necessarily scammed. The previous owner didn’t know better.
It’s a Cooper S with the JCW Appearance package which was an option for that generation.
Add the JCW tuning kit to it which I had, add the JCW brakes to it and you’ll effectively have a JCW.
Lots of JCW appearance package and a la carte options on that one. It was probably a $30,000 car when it was new.

So, what you have there is an R56 Cooper S It has a JCW shifter and side sills. And the rear bumper looked to be JCW but the front one didn’t. I don’t know what year it is….that’s important becasue the engines got tons of little fixes in this generation. The early ones seem to have a lot of problems, but over the life of that generation they put in fixes and refinements to make them better. I think the later cars got the N14 engine. The subs are then back seat speakers I think.

I’ve had an ‘05 S R53 since new. Zero issues with it. I prefer the SC engine, can make well over 200hp with bolt on goods. When working under the hood, it’s tight, and has to be put in “service mode” (entire front bumper and grill off) Takes about 15 min if you’ve done it before. I think that’s just an S model. It’s like people putting SS badges on a standard Camaro

  • @cameronwilliams846

There is two models in the R56 lineup which include John Cooper Works. One is the full 'Factory' JCW and the other is a Cooper S John Cooper Works. The Cooper S JCW is a standard cooper s which has had a factory JCW tuning kit put onto it. You can tell if it is this by opening the bonnet there should be a plaque with an identification number.. The kit included a new airbox, bigger manifold, exhaust and a ecu tune taking the power to 200ps instead of 211 on the factory jcw
