I'm so glad your recovery has been this great lately! I had exactly the same thoughts when I read Candide... and Dostoevsky was a genius! I highly recommend checking out his short story Notes from Underground!

Is there anyone who also loves crime and punishment? (though I get, that it tends to circle around one conversation or situation for a long time) but it is remarkable how a book manages to make you think about it years later, without loosing interest to talk about it :)

Speaking of full cast audiobooks the best one I've listened to is "Lincoln in the Bardo". I think they cast over a hundred different voice actors and they all do an amazing job. It is incredible! Highly recommended.

I know this is super late but A Small Place sounds super interesting! I just wanted to add that luxury/cruise-type of travel definitely harms the Caribbean islands more than it does good. So although that type of tourism is bad, I think changing the way one travels could actually be beneficial to locals without exploiting them. This includes things like staying in smaller business/locally run accommodation, eating at locally run restaurants, shopping at small businesses, etc. Just wanted to put in my two cents and I don't know if that's discussed in the essay, but I can't wait to pick it up and read up on this topic.

For some reason I keep hearing about H H Holmes lately, so I feel like I need to look into him more! Interesting to hear your thoughts on Strange the Dreamer - I really enjoyed it & read Muse of Nightmares straight after which did let me see some more perspectives but I do agree, it was more romantic than I’d originally anticipated!

I want to read 'Can you hear the nightbird call?' but I think I'm going to wait until I am in a better place mentally because it seems like it wouldn't be good for my mental health at the moment.
I think I am the only person in the world who didn't like Howl's moving castle. I think my expectation of what it would be versus what I was reading.

Howl's Moving Castle is a first installment in a trilogy and the second book in it is as good as the first! It features different characters and their adventures in the same world and does have Sophie and Howl and other characters on the side as well. It is called Castle in the Air and has this whimsical Middle Eastern allure to it.
Crime and Punishment was a torture for me cause we study it in Ukraine in the age of 14-15, and I don't think that's an appropriate age for this particular work. I only remember my disgust with the events of the novel and irritation with the main hero, and my main question was - why didn't he send the money he stole to his starving mother and sister since he already killed those women?? Might as well help your loved ones, you know! Logic of teenage maximalism)

I'm so sad you were disappointed by strange the dreamer. I think the characters you probably wanted to know more about are definitely explored more in Muse of Nightmares (Minya and Eril-Fane). This duology is one my favourites of all time but I totally get it's not for everyone ❤️ love your videos

Read White Tiger by Aravind Adiga. It's a beautiful dark comedy. It's like Crime and Punishment but with a touch of comedy. 🙂

I'm reading The Idiot by Dostoevsky right now, I don't know if you've read it but if not I'd recommend it as a somewhat lighter, more pleasant Dostoevsky read!

I loved Crime and Punishment and researching where Dostoevsky was in his life when he wrote it. Something that I've been thinking about is that apparently Rasky boy was written as a critique/caricature of the nihilism and utilitarianism movements during the time. I definitely thought he was a nihilist but I don't really think he had any original or intelligent ideas that were progressive to society and so not really utilitarian?
His whole spiel was that men of great intelligence and original ideas were above the law, but I'm beginning to think that part of his guilt and anxiety was from the realization that even if this ideology were morally or logically correct, he is not one of these men and has thus committed a crime well punishable under law.

It's funny how you thought Crime and Punishment put you in a bad mood... I actually think it's so far very relatable ahaha I'm still reading it but it's kind of refreshing how the author just knows how to portrait those emotions and anxieties.

I love your videos and you Emma but it's pronounced Sikh like the word sick but with a kh sound at the end, not like seek.

    • @prabhneetbhandaal7742
      @prabhneetbhandaal7742 2 роки тому

And it's Khalistan where both the a's are pronounced like double a. Like the "laam" in salaam.

    • @prabhneetbhandaal7742

Is there a reason why white people can pronounce sick like click yet pronounce Sikh like seek? The only difference between Sikh and sick are the ending two letters yet non South Asians are more inclined to change the pronunciation of the 'i' to fit their idea of what it should sound like based on what? Our accents? Our languages? Or is it just a guess? And if it is a guess, why doesn't it resemble the words you do know of, spelt almost exactly the same, in your own language? What is the guess based on?
