  • G'day guys! Today we are showing you the dual battery setup in my Ford Explorer. It consists of two Optima batteries mounted on there side, as well as the Ctek Dual 250s and a Ctek Smartpass. The Smartpass is not needed but does gives us the added benefit of being able to charge our batteries from the car alternator at 80amps. Without the Smartpass we would be limited to the 20amps that is standard charge rate for the Dual 250s. I am not affiliated with Ctek, or any other related products or retailers.I have also added a switch so that I can bypass all the electronics, and charge the batteries directly from the car alternator or use the extra batteries to jump start the Explorer. I have done another video on the solar blanket that we use to charge the batteries when we are camped • Kings Solar Blanket Re...

Great and clear explanation, thanks a lot, but i was wondering: how on earth does the smartpass manage to charge at 80 amps? Won’t that overrun the batteries? I know nothing about electricity but I gotta learn it for a build of my own. Cheers a lot!

Have you put in fuses at all the batteries? and if so what kind?

I only have one fuse at the car alternator. I'm not sure the correct name but it's basically a flat glass fuse. You will find there are not many options when you're looking at 100 amps or so.

Noticing your set up I see the CTEK connection fastener of a white color different from the OEM black colored cable fasteners that came with the CTEK units. Is the threaded shank of the white fastener longer than the threaded shank of the OEM black fasteners of the original unit? If so, where can I purchase the fasteners? The original fastener are too short, plus the threads are an odd and unique thread pitch/diameter which I’m unable to obtain anywhere in the USA. I’ve contacted CTEK in Sweden and they were not very forthcoming relative to replacing the fasteners for some odd reason. Nevertheless, if you could advise me on how to obtain longer fasteners so I can stack up a number of battery cable terminal lugs on my CTEK D250S I would be eternally grateful. Best regards...

No, they are just the same. My ctek unit is quite old and that is the color they used back when mine was new. I also had alot of problems with the thread length as I used thick heavy cable and terminal ends. I think if you look at my setup you will see I used one of the ctek joiner Bars to attach the extra cables. The bar is just a piece of flat steel with a hole in each end. If you look in the manual you will see its designed to join the two ctek units together when they are mounted close together. I simply bolt one end into the ctek and places a normal bolt thru the other end, so that I could stack my cables. Obviously you have to insulate it very very well. Alternatively you could use a junction box or something.

How much did it cost for each ctec?

Prices vary, but you are looking at around $350 for the ctek dual, and $300 for the optional smartpass. That's here in Australia. 4wd supacentre is now selling ctek, they may have some deals, but pays to shop around.
