Indeed! Today's villains (or the writers that create them) should spend a semester or two at the Miguelito Loveless School for Genius Criminal Masterminds! 🙂
Correction: I heard that he kilked himself. Not true so I'm glad I started watching this story. My dad and my boyfriend loved this show. I have to admit I'm a late watcher, but at least my boyfriend has the DVD set to the series.
A wonderful retrospective on Michael Dunn. Thank you, Dave. I love the TV series THE WILD, WILD WEST as a kid, and now as an adult in reruns. Michael Dunn's Miguelito Loveless is to James West just as Ernst Blofeld is to James Bond.
I loved him on The Wild Wild West! He was also really good on that Star Trek episode too. I wasn't aware of his personal life. Sounded like a really nice guy!
I've just aquired the full collection of the Wild Wild West n it's always a pleasure n surprise when Dr. Loveless shows up. I love Michael Dunn!! The chemistry between West, Gordon n Loveless is shear poetry!! We were all so lucky to watch Michael Dunn in action. ❤❤❤
Ross Martin was my favorite in WWW, not "James West" for the same reason many of us preferred "Mr. Spock" and not "Kirk", they seemed more interesting, ("Kirk and "West" are also somewhat kinda shallow characters). I also always thought that Ross Martin could have played "Dr. McCoy", they had similar looks and demeanor. Mr Dunn was sensational, one of the first "smaller people" to be allowed to stand out as a well-rounded character.
@@deezynar Great observation ! But let's not forget the amazingly AWESOME Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley because if "Frankenstein" is NOT "Steam Punk" then Edgar Allan Poe is not either and Shelley's novel came first. Mary is the Mother of all Science Fiction, Poe came second and Jules, whom I LOVE came third, what do you think?
@@deezynar Using technology, barely current for the time, to seemingly achieve things that are absolutely miraculous, I think fits the definition of "Steam Punk". When Mary wrote this novel (in 1817) on a group dare to see who produced the scariest story among a group of writers, including Percy Shelley and Lord Byron, her peers, she TOTALLY amazed them. Look up the story, it's worth learning about this and Mary herself, she was 21 when she wrote it. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was an unqualified GENIUS, the Mother of Science Fiction, no exaggeration. Here's an URL for you: www.history.com/this-day-in-history/frankenstein-published
He was even memorable in supporting roles. I remember when he appeared on a Night Gallery segment "Sins of the Fathers." He played a servant to a nobleman who died and sought the services of a sin eater. Talented actor AND singer who is deeply missed.
He was a great actor. I ran into some awful foreign Frankenstein film with Dunn in it and was saddened that he died shortly after . He deserved so much more than the part he played in it. He worked till the end no matter what it was which is commendable but sad.
Dunn’s performance in Plato’s stepchildren is the heart and pathos of that episode. I was born in 68, and missed Wild West. I’m not surprised at how great of an actor he was. I’m glad he broke out big and I get to learn about it now. Thanks for the video
@J B Known a lot of actors over the years. A few of them, like James Woods or Jodie Foster are super smart, but sadly, 80% of them are lucky, that they have the talent to act, because otherwise, sad to say, they are dumber than a sack full of hammers.
Thank you so much! NYC 1965! Every Friday night at 8:30 PM I was allowed to stay up late and watch it with my dad! Once, during the show, I imitated Robert Conrad with a karate/judo move and broke the coffee table! Dunn was always the highlight of the show!
In 1974 my local TV station showed Wild Wild West, followed by Star Trek. Watched both till I had seen them all at least twice. Both were better than most theatrical releases.
James Dothan was on a British TV interview show in 1980s. He said Paramount’s biggest mistake was waiting 10 years after TOS. Lucy was supporter of Star Trek, before she sold out to Paramount. Those execs did not know what to do with it. He also said, that reading the scripts before shooting was great. The actors loved the quality of many stories & scripts.
ME-TV was doing the same thing here. They would run what they called; "Sci-Fi Saturday Night!" The afternoon would be straight westerns, the last western would be "Wild Wild West," followed by science fiction programs. It was perfect! So of course, they changed it!
@@whiteribbonman1Can you tell me what "Steam Punk" is? Thanks. I also thought The Wild, Wild West was a great TV Series. The Will Smith Movie wasn't that good.

Grew up watching the show. Loveless was always my favorite character to see in the show due to his voice. As a child, I loved his voice and found it soothing. Still do.
Once in a while I'll catch an episode of Wild Wild West, always hoping that Dr. Loveless would be the nemesis of Jim West featured. Dr. Loveless has always been my favorite bad guy. Rest in Peace.
Not one of the greatest recurring villains in television history, THE greatest. And it is befitting that this remarkable tribute to him was uploaded by you, Dave. Once again you provide insight into how someone overcame life's obstacles and in this case brought joy to millions for over half a century with his incredible performances. Thanks so very much yet once again, Dave! Now I am even more convinced "The Wild, Wild West" is not only the most unique program but my most favorite.
And when Get Smart was rebooted in 2008, Dunn's picture appears in a newspaper clipping on the refrigerator of Steve Carrell's Maxwell Smart. Not a bad tribute.
_Get Smart_ made a huge mistake by killing off Mr. Big in the pilot, as he would have made a tremendous recurring villain. Oh, well, _Get Smart's_ loss was _The Wild Wild West's_ gain. As Max would say, "Missed it by _that_ much."
The Wild Wild West and Star Trek were my favorites as a kid and I liked Dr Loveless then but appreciated the songs when I found them on UA-cam. There was a good Michial Dunn website with info and pictures but it's been gone for years. Thanks for the video.

Oh, wonderful! I’m so glad see Michael Dunn in the spotlight. The episodes with Dunn in the “Wild, Wild West” were the only ones I liked. Have you ever seen the television movie, “Goodnight, My Love”? It starred Richard Boone and Dunn as detectives. Barbara Bain was in it, too. I found it on UA-cam and loved it as much as the first time I saw it. It was one of Dunn’s last roles. I remember that I was sad when he died.
I saw that film on tv, and then spent years trying to find a recording. I finally did, at a small comic convention. Film Noir with Dunn and Boone, and Victor Buono as the baddie
I agree, Michael Dunn was a great actor and added something special to both the Wild Wild West and to Star Trek! He is an individual who died way to young!
First time I've watched Michael Dunn this morning...on the film Ship of Fools...his humanity and intelligence shone through...in for me a great and old film...thank you.
I miss the days, when the actors/actresses life was just as interesting as the roles they played. These people had courage and goodness, that you generally don't see today.
Another great retrospective Dave! And another show and actor I loved as a kid. Nobody was as cool as Robert Conrad/James West who had the perfect villain in Migellito Loveless. I knew a little of Michael Dunn but appreciate all the info you had to fill in some of the blanks. I missed Dr. Loveless in the reunion movies as he had passed away by then, being replaced by his "son" Paul Williams. And the less said about the '97 remake portrayal of Loveless, the better.
He passed when I was barely a year old, less actually. I did get to see his work on reruns of the old shows and at the time I only saw a weird creepy villain, not the man he was. It wasn't until years later that I understood what a great actor he was.
His role in the Get Smart pilot as "Mr. Big" was great. He appeared in an underrated Bonanza episode "Its a Small World". I confess that his roles as Dr. Loveless and the Night Gallery episode "The Sins of the Fathers" are my favorites. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
Thanks for sharing this, yes I remember Michael Dunn as the baddie on the Wild Wild West and that small part in Star Trek. He was like the first dwarf I ever seen in my life on TV, and the thing about him was that his charisma made him taller than he was because after a while you forget you looking at dwarf. That was his power over people. Also what I love about his character in The Wild Wild West was that he was a villain that had or drive to be a villain unlike some villains better one-dimensional like in Batman.
Starting in 1969, my father started his residency at Harbor General Hospital (now called Harbor UCLA)....Michael Dunn, due to his many health issues, was in often and my dad would see him. The buttons on the elevator were Heat activated and Michael couldn't reach them....Michael walked with a cane and (this should tell you different the times were) would heat the rubber tip of his cane with his cigar (!) then use it to press the elevator button. ....I wish my dad had been able to introduce me ...
He was a great actor & as villain he gave Jim West a run for his money. I did enjoy this video. Thanks again for for sharing this with us. How about another profile on another villain? Steve Mcgarrett's arch-enemy Wo-Fat. You should do one on him.
Dave, I am lucky enough to have all four seasons on DVD and there times when I will watch every episode with Dr. Loveless . You're right that devilish smile gets each time and I love it.

As a kid I did not watch Wild, Wild West but I’m probably going to check it out since I’ve been watching your videos. I knew him from that Star Trek episode. That episode always spoke to me as a kid especially around people that had ability, talent or power but used them to the disservice of others instead of up lifting or inspiring others. Helped me do some deep thinking as a child- how would I be if I had that power of mind over matter. I am so glad he answered those letters of the children who wrote to him. What a legacy. 👍🙏☺️
My dad was a big fan of WWW and thanks to him, I became one too! He especially enjoyed the character of Miguilto Lovless! Even then he took note of which characters made the best villains (or nemesis) in any show. I must agree that Dunn put everything he had into any character he played. One poster here said WWW was the beginnings of steampunk and I think it's true as far as TV depictions go. The Adventures Of Brisco County, Jr. was the only other show i knew of to have tread similar ground WWW did; a spiritual successor if you will.
I bought the DVD WWW set a few years ago. I watched every episode, and it was always with excitement when I learned Dr. Loveless would star in an episode. Great character, great man.
Loved Dunns acting! Thank you for taking the time/effort to showcase Dunn. He truly is etched into the memories of many TV viewers of that era. Well done sir 👏.
Dunn was the most memorable of the many opponents faced by West & Gordon, Inc. during the Wild Wild West. On a general note, those who disparage the series might take pause and consider just how ahead of its time the concepts presented could be. Today one of the more interesting genres in fiction and gaming is "Steampunk." Now think back on many of the WWW's episodes could fit right into that concept...especially those conceived by Dr. Loveless. Jim and Artemus' tricked out train and armaments are surely close enough to Steampunk to qualify. At least half of the episodes filmed contain or are based upon the use of weapons or items which currently exist or have existed but far in the future of the setting of the series.
Thank you for your great video of Dr. Miguelito ... who was a worthy adversary to Jim and Artie. Great and very fond memories of a great TV western! Kudos!
My favorite Dr. Loveless episodes were the one where he slipped his special drug in West's water basin causing him to hallucinate and believing he shot and killed Artemus Gordon! In reality Artie wasn't shot because he hadn't arrived in town yet! I also liked the one where Loveless shrank West to the size of a bug and sicked his cat on him!
Between the TV and movie versions of Dr. Loveless, Micheal Dunn's character was far more interesting and far more intimidating on screen. Michael was a wonderful actor and a wonderful part of my childhood.
one of many things I love about your videos is sharing the wonderful things done by these people, not just for publicity but because they honestly cared and wanted to make a difference.
Thinking back on the subject. Some of my favorite shows had classic bad guys or evil villains and the good guys always had great gadgets. Get Smart, Wild, Wild West and Batman. Any of these bad guys cross over and do all of these shows?? I am sure I am leaving out some other shows along these same lines of classic villains and good guy gadgets. Thanks again for sharing Dave. Good Stuff.

I think I watched every episode of Wild Wild West at least 5 times. Miguelito Loveless was played perfectly. Today's villains could learn a lot from Dunn's portrayal.
Thank you Dave. I always loved Michael Dunn's "Dr. Loveless" character, your retrospective on the actor is a fine memorial to the man.
You're welcome, John. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂
@@jdsundstrom Yes, thank you David, for your positiveness and for bringing us information about this wonderful actor, Michael Dunn.
When the steam punk craze started, I told everyone Artemis Gordon was the original. I loved Mr. Dunn in WWW and in Star Trek.
I always thought that Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea was the original, making Captain Nemo the first fictional steam punk character.
@@charlesroberts3650 You might be right. I have never read Frankenstein. I just don't see it as steam punk, but maybe I'm missing something.
Also "Bonanza" and a series about a family of children continuing to move west after their parents were killed.
He DID have a GREAT smile! Loved him in Plato's Stepchildren. Great piece Dave!
You're welcome, David. And...thanks for sharing!
Michael Dunn was in fact a SUPER GENIUS with an IQ of 178. Not sure if Loveless topped that.
Yes Tonette ! Not many people know he was a genius !
Tonette Joyce Skube I just looked up Einstein’s IQ for comparison. It was 160. So apparently Michael Dunn was smarter than Einstein.
Greg Moonen Ted also had a remarkable singing voice. He recorded a song called Wesley. He could have had a career in singing if he wanted.
Dr Loveless might not be as much of a genius as Michael Dunn, but he more than made up for it with evil!
Love it, Maria! Nice job taking out that dangerous coffee table. 🙂
I thought it was Friday night, thanks. Me too with watching with dad.
In 1974 my local TV station showed Wild Wild West, followed by Star Trek. Watched both till I had seen them all at least twice. Both were better than most theatrical releases.
WPGH 53 later Fox53 in Pittsburgh PA ran WWW in the 1970s, 1980s. It had a strong following.
Warren Pierce same where I lived in Newport News VA at around the same time.
WWW was steam punk before steam punk was cool.
What is Steam Punk?
+ktpinnacle News flash pinnacle! The Wild Wild West was and IS STILL cool! Steam punk has never been cool except to you and the puny thumbs up’ers.
@@whiteribbonman1Can you tell me what "Steam Punk" is? Thanks. I also thought The Wild, Wild West was a great TV Series. The Will Smith Movie wasn't that good.
(There's always one out there)
Stay safe!
@TheBrabon1 I was born in the late MId 20th Century so I am not familiar with these terms. Who are some of the Novelists and Novels of Steam Punk?
I used to watch this show religiously and every time he came on was like the best, Always wondered why they never used him more. Great Actor he stood tall
You're right. They could have used a little more Dr. Loveless on the show.
You're welcome, norton. I am truly glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂
love him as Mr. Big in the pilot episode of GET SMART!
When Maxwell Smart asked, "So you're Mr "Big"?" sarcastically, Dunn replied with greater sarcasm, "So you''re Maxwell "Smart"?"!
Michael Dunn also shined mightily in the touching 1970 "Bonanza" episode "It's A Small World". This guy's range was incredible.
You are correct! I loved all the episodes of " The Wild Wild West " that featured Dr. Lovelace.
The Wild Wild West and Star Trek were my favorites as a kid and I liked Dr Loveless then but appreciated the songs when I found them on UA-cam. There was a good Michial Dunn website with info and pictures but it's been gone for years. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome, Jeff!
as a 60 year old, i fell in love with this series..and Dr.Loveless, along with Richard Kiel, were my favorites..drawn to this ahead of it's time show..the gadgets..flimsy but likable plots all the same..Dorn visited may afflicted children on his own dime..his own time..without prompting from the PR people..truly an outstanding Man that displayed class and insurmountable courage..the pain was incredible that he suffered..many of us can learn a few life lessons from this great Human..thanks for the memories..
You're right. He was a great actor and, even more importantly, a great human being!
Back when television was Fun.
Definitely simpler times. At least for me. Of course, I was just a kid. 🙂
Back when some TV series were uplifting and justly patriotic.
Well I don't know which one I like better the short guy from The Wild Wild West TV show or the movie with Will Smith new play new black Robert Conrad I like Will Smith so I guess I'll have to take the movie sorry Robert you're out you're outnumbered

@@deborahskillman3003 I dig Will! I liked his version in film. For me, There is no comparison. The original made you feel something. I can't explain but It was one of my favorite shows of all time!
Thank you .very much for this video. As a child, watching both Star Trek and WWW, I was drawn to his character. He had such a childlike enthusiasm as Dr. Loveless. He was the kid with all the toys and wanted to show off so much, but he did it with such infectious glee. Thanks again.
Growing up in the 70s this was My Show. RIP Robert Conrad
Clips from it are, as far as I know, also available on UA-cam. "Yo Ho, Francis!!"
I agree, Michael Dunn was a great actor and added something special to both the Wild Wild West and to Star Trek! He is an individual who died way to young!
Way too young!
Not only was Mr. Dunn was a good actor, he was a superb singer as well.
Yep, the less said about the movie as a whole, the better!
He passed when I was barely a year old, less actually. I did get to see his work on reruns of the old shows and at the time I only saw a weird creepy villain, not the man he was. It wasn't until years later that I understood what a great actor he was.
Good stuff. Thanks Dave. Always loved the Wild, Wild West. Loved the train and the gadgets that they used to fight crime. Thanks again for posting.
The theme was great too. The 666660's were chocked full of awesome themes to tv shows. It's About Time was a favorite on our bus in elementary school.
It was 007 goes West.
You are very welcome!
Absolutely great show, and I especially loved the Dr Loveless episodes!
Love it, MT Rich! Thank you so much for your comment.
When he died Famous Monsters of Film Land magazine did an article on him. Farewell to a Little Giant
I remember cuz I got that magazine. :)
Thanks for sharing!
One of the best finds I had from watching old films, was seeing Dunn in the movie "Ship Of Fools."
Indeed! An excellent performance!
Herr Glocken! Great role!
What a wonderful tribute. I was hoping someone would remember him. Well done Dave, well done.
Thanks TTNN!
He was a key in the shows success. I remember being happy when I saw that he was going to be in the episode.
He was a great actor & as villain he gave Jim West a run for his money. I did enjoy this video. Thanks again for for sharing this with us. How about another profile on another villain? Steve Mcgarrett's arch-enemy Wo-Fat. You should do one on him.
That's a great suggestion. I'll add actor Wo-Fat actor Khigh Alx Dhiegh to my list for future video topics.

The Wild Wild West was a show way ahead of its time as a steampunk western. Dr. Loveless was by far the best villain on the show.

Yep. He was truly "super". 🙂
I still watch it. I love it.
Check WWW out. You will not be disappointed, Dennis.
Ahh...good ol' Brisco County Jr.! Such a great show! Well, I've got to admit that I love almost anything that has Bruce Campbell in it. 🙂
Wow! Quite an eloquent description of the brilliant actor. As a child, I was always fascinated by his acting on The Wild Wild West. He was a giant!

Over the decades, he stands alone as the best. He stole your attention on screen like few before or after. Thank you for this video.
Totally agree. TWWW was steampunk even before the word was coined.
Thanks for that,he was a great actor looked forward to him being on the show!!

Victor Buono was also a great villain too, he was a great actor with huge theater background
WWW was steampunk before people knew what steampunk was.
Steampunk??
Thank you for your great video of Dr. Miguelito ... who was a worthy adversary to Jim and Artie. Great and very fond memories of a great TV western! Kudos!
You're most welcome, Paul!
Happy that I stopped in. I never missed an episode. Dunn was priceless, he made Loveless loveable. Thanks for the memories.
