Out of all your concord redesing, this one is my favorite ( yet), the original character is just terribly bland and silly with the golf ball head. But you turned it into a super cool looking amphibian, feline alien space suit. Amazing work
This is just my personal head canon about the character from the few images I have seen of her. Her asymmetric leg armour combined with the rocket launcher and skinny body made mr think that this character rocket jumps to gain altitude (protected by a downwards facing sci-fi-shield or something), but made a few oopsies along the way and blew some of her body parts off, which were then replaced with futuristic bionics. That would also explain the completely sealed helmet, severe burns DrDoom or Vader style. Since inclusivity and representation was a selling point of the game they could have used that to represent amputees by going all in on highlighting the prosthetics, such as springy athlete runner blades.
the original designs helmet was to big for the body shape and just making it smaller and putting armor pieces on the chest, arms and legs to protect vital spots with a body suit under it that show it was armored but still flexible might have worked it would be more feminine but believable future armor.
"I do apologize to our flat chested viewers out there". 1: Why? 2: You follow it up with most of your viewers being male. Are you saying we're fat? (this second one is a joke) 3: Holy cap, she looks WAY more like a strong combat character by seven and a half minutes in. Nice!
The design is amazing yes but the purple pink color is too bright it would be bad for the shooter genre to stand out so brightly and be a massive target, also that kind or bright color is very uncomfortable to look st long term it has a burn in effect quality to it on the eye i feel.
Awesome video, and you character is indee much more apealing. IMO you could try to make at least the same palette, trying to make a more direct comparisson but in a more familiar way. I mean, the main characteristic is the red plate visor, and you made it blue, i wouldn't recognize if you tossed it without showing that is a redesign proces, yk? I mean, is really great to go with a more trully redefining aspect, but maybe this could teach us how to make a better palette, maybe changing values or saturation and explaining why? Great video, i'll binge the rest :D
That's a good point, I didn't even try a red visor, It would probably look cool. I'll try and toy with saturation levels in upcoming vides. Thanks, And welcome to the channel!
Looking good Golf-Ball Head Girl! I wonder if her and Mike's New Robot are friends? Who to draw next🤔 What about Harley from the new Joker movie? Is there a way to make an interesting design for a character from a psychological thriller rather than an action series?
This was the design I was closest to liking. The overall silhouette reminded me almost of a bootleg Metroid Fusion suit. The way bits of it are asymmetrical makes me think it’s supposed to be a sort of scavenged, thrown together in the heat of the moment kind of thing, but it’s all the same drab ugly greenish color. If they were going for that all of the different parts should have had more vibrant and varied colors to show it didn’t originally go together. The shoulder pads definitely help the large helmet fit the body better!
This series is really cool. Would like to see all character designs improved because Concord consisted of only bad to terrible designs. What would be interesting as well is "What makes good character design?" from someone who really knows his stuff. I'm learning a lot from these videos and it neatly shows what not to do and what to do
Looking at how well you remade this character is gorgeous. Gameplay wise she was intended to be some kind of "rocket jumper", but clearly - your design resembled this concept way better than OG. P.S: "The golf ball head girl" phrase gave me a doodling idea. Thanks.
12:43 maybe you could add a second source of blue in this design(say the straps on the right legs, or "energy lines" running across the suit). That would give blue another place to be from just finding itself on the top section.
You can have an interesting female character that is flat chested... Think about Jinx from League of Legends. But still Concord designs are just boring and shapeless. And Team Fortress is proof that you don't need much to make characters interesting.
@@BlacklistUniverse I'd be interested in your takes on some of the Apex Legends characters because I think when you talk about silhouettes, they don't do a good job of it sometimes...
I don't really agree with you giving Roka a bigger chest. 1, her original design is supposed to be agile, and with pretty much no support on her torso, bigger breasts would make it harder and more uncomfortable to move around (realistically speaking) and she would be less agile. 2, her og design is wearing a bodysuit, so you can clearly see that her figure is feminine, even with her being skinny and not that curvy. 3, she can have her og body and still be idolized-beauty standards aren't the same everywhere and for everyone; Smaller chests don't take away from attractiveness/desireablility (if you're not a prawn addict or fretishize curvy women). There are other female characters which have more average-sized chests, not all of them need to have a visible figure.
Sorry to disappoint, but it's just historical and biological reality. It's nothing to do with fetishizing women or being addicted to pron. Idealized women have breasts. It is an inarguable reality of human existence. Not saying a flat chested woman isn't beautiful and sexy and all that fun stuff, and that some people (a very small minority) prefer that. But let's not pretend it is what it isn't. Also, plenty of full breasted women in the Olympics are plenty agile. I didn't give her F-cups. lol
Ribbed for her pleasure 😂 Such a massive improvement over the original, if I saw her now on the character section I'd definitely be interested in playing as her!
11:39 I like the reptilian look. Don't know if this was intentional but her helmet looks a lot like a snake's head and texture on her armor a lot like scales.
The "more armor in one side" does make sense. She uses a heavy rocket launcher, enemies would want to engage her coming from a place that gives them advantage, AKA from the opposite dominant side of her. Hence, she would worry more about protection on the place that she is most vulnerable.
Absolutely amazing! It looks like some sort of underwater diving suit and I almost want to see her with a trident instead of a rocket launcher. Maybe even some female Predator style!
She's supposed to be able to fly, but nobody will know it because the design sucks in the first place 😂 I bet you didn't know either lol. But well, at least you now have a knock-off Uravity (with same quirk she uses to lift herself off the ground), instead of a mass-produced Super Sentai grunt
personally I read the "OG" design like a lady bug without wings and would have tried to keep it cute and add some scify bug features of a lady bug like adorable wings and emphasize the mystery of the helmet not showing the face even a bit. The dots on the helmet really reminded me of a bug so why not lean more into it cause bugs are known to fly.
I think an important goal in "redesigning" anything, is to first try to break down the intent, and the appeal of that intent, so that you can reconstruct it. Then, unless you already have a very clear idea of what to do, you do a little research and finally you start building some concepts. I think you were right, about the cat shape, but you then chose to get rid of it, and the new helmet doesn't really resemble anything. Personally, I think the "idea" that the artists maybe initially wanted, and then were told to dumb down and make hyper realistic and not fun looking by comity, was to have a cutesy cartoon animal themed helmet based on a fishbowl shape, and put it on a girl in a skin tight latex suit with a rocket launcher (I think we can all get behind that idea, even if I'm wrong. I think there are hints of it in the original and it's what I think the original idea's appeal is). I think you can get closer to this and add some story elements to her design by adorning her helmet and weapon with cute trinkets/stickers, have her skin suit actually have some branding/logos on it like she's possibly sponsored by a company, and have some collectable keychains etc hanging from parts of her gear. Also lean into that she is wearing a skin tight shiny suit that gives her max mobility, but feel free to add some retro-futuristic looking exoskeleton joints that make her look boosted to justify any super human gameplay feats. The skinsuit should look tight while providing some protection for scrapes from impact if falls etc (maybe it has a hexagonal pattern to make it look like some sort of plated fiber). I think, considering the move-set she has, she'd be better off with a bunny girl theme using a rocket launcher, with visible high heel jet boots that visually serve as thigh high boots with heels. You can even add bunny ears to the helmet, but I'd keep the fishbowl space helmet shape, just make it cuter rather than cooler (the idea I think the artists wanted to execute was likely "cute but dangerous". I think she definitely needs something for her silhouette other than just her fishbowl space helm. Regardless, your design is still way better than the original, but I think it's also a first draft and you didn't have a lot of story to go off of for it so it just feels sorta like a "cooler" version of the same design and tells me nothing about who Roka is or how her gameplay might be, so it still has some of the same problems as the original, unfortunately. Impressive illustration skills though.
Okay, Sony needs to hire you to re-design all of the characters. Whoever the character designer on Concord was, they're an idiot. I don't think the game is cancelled yet. They're just going back to the drawing board to improve it. They'll likely put it out as a free to play and it'll bomb again if someone doesn't save those characters.
Honestly I know guys that could re-skin these characters in a couple weeks. Hire a few of them, it would cost maybe $100K, which is nothing compared to the $150Million they already spent. Welcome to the channel!
You know, I'm not opposed to small chested women, that being said this redesign is actually amazingly well done. Interestingly on the topic of having to draw characters in comics with so much detail, I think if I remember correctly, that's why Toriyama never really brought back Cell, because he designed him with all those little spots on his body and it was a pain in the ass. Probably the only reason Cell Max was made was because it was CGI so they didn't have to worry about it. I've also never been a fan of overly designed characters, feels like it muddies the overall look and makes everyone too visually similar with no contrast. I think the Mortal Kombat games after 9 are my best example of that. Some designs are fine, others are too uninteresting or don't make the character visually distinct.
I prefer the shape and design you gave the character over the original, the only thing I'd change is the colors, although I don't know what colors I'd choose 🤔
I'm not that knowledgeable, but I'm curious. You talked about texture and the time pressure to keep up schedule, so what do you think of the manga system, where they use pre-made textures that they basically stamp on the drawings?
i feel space age, or heavy armor is a easy time to have a more androgynous shape, thats what like Metroid dose ( as a reference). but i feel if you cant draw an appealing flatchested/ tomboy character is really limiting your potential :p ( happens alot in anime styled stuff) . overall looks pretty cool though
one point - I would have given her larger backpack with clearer rocket engine since she's a flying character apparenty (try to figure this by her design tho), still... I feel like this is much better version anyway. Not like it matters anymore
hey there! love your redesign for concord characters, they look so much better than the "original" versions. i'm thinking, maybe you could do the same for DAVEERS? she's got the same weird helmet and..well, yikes🥺 or IT-Z, if you don't mind thanks for sharing your mind with us and, again, love your work❤
I disagree about breasts. The Japanese are able to make female characters sexy, feminine and interesting with any kind of body shape. This is the problem with Western artists, their choice of body shapes is limited, it gets boring. BTW, I'm not advocating for fat characters. Fat characters must be used deliberately and very sparingly, and most of the times, not at all. When I say different body shapes, I mean within the range of a healthy form.
Anime and Disney work with scale of proportions much better than “realistic” art like comic books and 3D modeling. To make a flatter chested person in this art style has to match liked proportions. That means taller and thinner forms, they made a stocky figure/boxy hour glass and erased the boobs, which looks unappealing. It also hard to convey a 4’11(150cm) flat chest girl without making them look like an elementary school girl.
@@mramisuzuki6962 Sure, I agree. I was not defending this particular character, but small chested characters in general. I commented because he said that a female character "has to" have boobs, and I disagree (and BTW, I'm a straight male).
flat chests have a place. but its usually compensated by an extra feminine figure or apparel like a Lolita style dress, and a personality of pure attitude to match.
the original design is all silhouette and no details. it's just flat. your redesign fixed that awesomely without being overdesigned (imo) btw what brush/art program do you use? i love the ink lines style. i nominate Daw for the next redesign. challenge is to convey he is a healer and also keep his rotund feature without making it too stand out as his only personality.
Thank you for the kind words. I'm using Procreate on the ipad, and the Gesinki ink brush. Comes standard, and has what i think is a pretty true-to-brush finish. I will get to Daw! I have a couple in the barrel already! And welcome to the channel!
turned what looked like more of a basic enemy npc in a lineup of generic enemies into an amazing looking design. Great work! I would actually want to play this character.
If Sony decides to make Concord come back for whatever reason, they have SO many redesigns from so many talented people that all look great. They have no excuse to stick to the bland original designs.
I thought it can't be fixed... And i was right, you just copied the bare minimum and made something extraordinary of your own If only instead of activists they hired artists like yourself for design This is incredible
You could do redesigns of viewer submited characters. There is an endless pool of characters that random people have designed for themselves. D&D characters for example.
Hey, Mike? Something in your post got me curious: Are there any artists you would consider the world's best designers? 🤔 Roka looks awesome, by the way!
The WORLDS best? Oh my, I couldn't tell you... I think Dave Johnson, as much of a prick as he might be, is probably one of the best designers in comics. Joe Maduriera. John Byrne. Masumune Shiro. Those come to mind in comics.
I dunno, I know the original isn't super interesting, but a defining factor of it if anything, would be the large red visor and you didn't even keep that. It looks nice, but It's less of a 'fix', you basically just made an entirely new character in the same pose lol
The "ribbing" you're trying to describe is likely what would be called "sectional padding". Like in jackets or coats, it's a layer of padding stitched or "sectioned" by lines so the contents don't bunch up in one spot and go thin on another. Also promotes mobility as each "line" is a bending spot mechanically. The "sectional" part of the term comes from sectional armor, often used to refer to plating you can see on the typical Samurai armor image known as Lamellar armor. Just my take though.
Doesn't really work like that in comics, but I take your point. In comics it was short hand for texture, essentially. 'This is metal', shorthand, basically. It obviously doesn't translate to 'real' world design, you could tell when they made Ironman or Bucky, 'ribbed' metal texture was replaced with more functional tech. But in a lot of characters, it's just texture.
Awesome work. it's easy to redesign a crappy character design. What if you redesign a character that's already at its peak. :D Like Kratos from god of war 2018 :P
Even without breasts, this redesign is visually more striking. I guess it's more accurate to say, rather than they look like background characters, they look like first drafts. Like, someone drew them the way they are as a reference to be expanded on later, and they ran out of time, threw some colors on, and called it good.
Honestly, the most interesting part of the original design is that third mechanical arm coming out of the center of her back, holding her rocket launcher. The fact that people can _outright miss that_ shows how much of a failure in execution the original design is.

the original designs helmet was to big for the body shape and just making it smaller and putting armor pieces on the chest, arms and legs to protect vital spots with a body suit under it that show it was armored but still flexible might have worked it would be more feminine but believable future armor.
That would have been an option. Thanks
"I do apologize to our flat chested viewers out there".
1: Why?
2: You follow it up with most of your viewers being male. Are you saying we're fat?
(this second one is a joke)
3: Holy cap, she looks WAY more like a strong combat character by seven and a half minutes in. Nice!
Lol. Thank you. Welcome aboard!
The design is amazing yes but the purple pink color is too bright it would be bad for the shooter genre to stand out so brightly and be a massive target, also that kind or bright color is very uncomfortable to look st long term it has a burn in effect quality to it on the eye i feel.
I could see it desaturated. Thanks for the input! Welcome to the channel!
Nice work Mike! Have you ever done concept art for video games? I thought I'd heard about one or two comic artists that switched over to that career
Yes, I was concept artist for Deus Ex back in 1998/99
Hey Zach! Good to see you😄
Looking good Golf-Ball Head Girl! I wonder if her and Mike's New Robot are friends? Who to draw next🤔 What about Harley from the new Joker movie? Is there a way to make an interesting design for a character from a psychological thriller rather than an action series?
That's not a bad idea... but tonight... we draw BATMAN!
🦇🦹♂️
This was the design I was closest to liking. The overall silhouette reminded me almost of a bootleg Metroid Fusion suit. The way bits of it are asymmetrical makes me think it’s supposed to be a sort of scavenged, thrown together in the heat of the moment kind of thing, but it’s all the same drab ugly greenish color. If they were going for that all of the different parts should have had more vibrant and varied colors to show it didn’t originally go together.
The shoulder pads definitely help the large helmet fit the body better!
Excellent critique. Thank you! And welcome to the channel!
This series is really cool. Would like to see all character designs improved because Concord consisted of only bad to terrible designs. What would be interesting as well is "What makes good character design?" from someone who really knows his stuff. I'm learning a lot from these videos and it neatly shows what not to do and what to do
I'm so glad you're here! Welcome to the channel!
Looking at how well you remade this character is gorgeous.
Gameplay wise she was intended to be some kind of "rocket jumper", but clearly - your design resembled this concept way better than OG.
P.S: "The golf ball head girl" phrase gave me a doodling idea. Thanks.
lol, love to see it
@@BlacklistUniverse It won't be much, cause I'm absolute hobbyist-amateur ;)
I just came for the soothing experience of watching a pro work
Appreciate your view! Welcome aboard!
Original looks like she got her head stuck in a Jigsaw trap and just got a bigger helmet for it.
12:43 maybe you could add a second source of blue in this design(say the straps on the right legs, or "energy lines" running across the suit). That would give blue another place to be from just finding itself on the top section.
I love how the end design is lowkey the varia suit from metroid, it's a really solid design.
You can have an interesting female character that is flat chested... Think about Jinx from League of Legends. But still Concord designs are just boring and shapeless. And Team Fortress is proof that you don't need much to make characters interesting.
Totally agreed. Welcome to the channel!
hell yeahhh loved the video and great artwork! listening to you it's clear you have an expert understanding of design! look forward to new videos
Much appreciated! Hope you can make it to one of our Wednesday live streams as well! Welcome to the channel!!!
I didn't give her F-cups. lol
Ribbed for her pleasure 😂
Such a massive improvement over the original, if I saw her now on the character section I'd definitely be interested in playing as her!
Glad you agree! I won't comment on the ribbing... Welcome to the channel!
11:39 I like the reptilian look. Don't know if this was intentional but her helmet looks a lot like a snake's head and texture on her armor a lot like scales.
excellent work always!
Thanks! Giving it my best! Welcome to the channel!
The "more armor in one side" does make sense. She uses a heavy rocket launcher, enemies would want to engage her coming from a place that gives them advantage, AKA from the opposite dominant side of her. Hence, she would worry more about protection on the place that she is most vulnerable.
Like how jousting armor had more armor on their shield side. I get ya. Welcome to the channel!
Off hand I'd say they took the helmet shape/design from the Killzone 2 Helghast Heavy, stripping away the heavy thick padding though. Just a thought.
Absolutely amazing! It looks like some sort of underwater diving suit and I almost want to see her with a trident instead of a rocket launcher. Maybe even some female Predator style!
That would be cool!
You are the first designer re-designign concord characters that actually makes a fantastic job doing it. How much time it took you??
Varies on the subject. Details take time.
That helmet, sir, is TOP notch. Feels like i've never seen it done like that before, looks viper-like or something..?
She's supposed to be able to fly, but nobody will know it because the design sucks in the first place 😂
I bet you didn't know either lol. But well, at least you now have a knock-off Uravity (with same quirk she uses to lift herself off the ground), instead of a mass-produced Super Sentai grunt
I didn't know. Nothing about her design implied that. lol. Welcome to the channel!
personally I read the "OG" design like a lady bug without wings and would have tried to keep it cute and add some scify bug features of a lady bug like adorable wings and emphasize the mystery of the helmet not showing the face even a bit. The dots on the helmet really reminded me of a bug so why not lean more into it cause bugs are known to fly.
That's a fun idea! Look how everyone has great ideas, except Sony... lol Welcome to the channel!
Second! A personal best! 🥳
Way to go!🎉
Okay, Sony needs to hire you to re-design all of the characters.
The game was cancelled last week ( maybe 2 weeks ago actually) and servers are already down.
Amazing work sir. You are a legend
Thanks!
You're not the only person to point that out! Welcome to the channel!
The final design gives me cobra command vibes from GI-JOE
I'll take it! Welcome to the channel!
I prefer the shape and design you gave the character over the original, the only thing I'd change is the colors, although I don't know what colors I'd choose 🤔
Thank you, that is why I tried to run through a few variations at the end. What I like won't be what everyone else likes! And welcome to the channel!
I 'can' draw flat chested girls. But do i really want to, is the question... lol Welcome to the channel!
one point - I would have given her larger backpack with clearer rocket engine since she's a flying character apparenty (try to figure this by her design tho), still... I feel like this is much better version anyway. Not like it matters anymore
I definitely need to do more research into the characters so I can draw out their utility in the design. Thanks for the input! Welcome to the channel!
hey there! love your redesign for concord characters, they look so much better than the "original" versions. i'm thinking, maybe you could do the same for DAVEERS? she's got the same weird helmet and..well, yikes🥺
or IT-Z, if you don't mind
thanks for sharing your mind with us and, again, love your work❤
I was planning on doing Bazz today, but I'll do one of those tomorrow!
I'd really love to see the "aliens" redesigned to look less human and more original.
The alien characters in the game? Just wait! Welcome to the channel!
First character redesign already looks like something I would be all over playing. She looks like a Cobra themed Doom girl!
Thank you! Welcome to the channel!
@@kaisersoymilk6912 as not huge boob enjoyer I agree, but they didn’t use a body shape that’s idea for flat chest, that’s all I am saying too.
flat chests have a place. but its usually compensated by an extra feminine figure or apparel like a Lolita style dress, and a personality of pure attitude to match.
the original design is all silhouette and no details. it's just flat. your redesign fixed that awesomely without being overdesigned (imo)
btw what brush/art program do you use? i love the ink lines style.
i nominate Daw for the next redesign. challenge is to convey he is a healer and also keep his rotund feature without making it too stand out as his only personality.
Thank you for the kind words. I'm using Procreate on the ipad, and the Gesinki ink brush. Comes standard, and has what i think is a pretty true-to-brush finish. I will get to Daw! I have a couple in the barrel already! And welcome to the channel!
actually a very interesting design , easy on the eyes as well !
turned what looked like more of a basic enemy npc in a lineup of generic enemies into an amazing looking design. Great work! I would actually want to play this character.
Thank you very much!
If Sony decides to make Concord come back for whatever reason, they have SO many redesigns from so many talented people that all look great. They have no excuse to stick to the bland original designs.
I wouldn't mind if they paid me. Haha. Welcome to the channel!
This is a great improvement, from an "I just made it cause they pay me" to an actual space kinda design and a better one at that.
Thank you! It's a lot of fun, glad people are watching. I'd like to keep doing this type of content! Welcome to the channel!
ya'll should look at amari's concept art way back before sbi went into concord
I thought it can't be fixed...
And i was right, you just copied the bare minimum and made something extraordinary of your own
If only instead of activists they hired artists like yourself for design
This is incredible
Thank you! I did what I could! :D Welcome to the channel!
OML The shading it great.
Thank you so much! I'm kind of self-conscious about my coloring, so I'm glad to hear that. And welcome to the channel!
To be fair, Roka probably had one of the easiest designs to fix while maintaining her original concept. Rad redesign nonetheless. :)
She is practically a blank slate. Welcome to the channel!
I'll write it down! Welcome to the channel!
Game circled the drain harder than bad tacobell
Even without breasts, this redesign is visually more striking.
I guess it's more accurate to say, rather than they look like background characters, they look like first drafts. Like, someone drew them the way they are as a reference to be expanded on later, and they ran out of time, threw some colors on, and called it good.
Yeah, it's hard when you only have 8 years and $150 million to work with... lol Welcome to the channel!
@@BlacklistUniverse Hey now, that's less than $20 million per year. What can you really be expected to do with that kind of shoestring budget?
😲 that's an improvement 👏
That was the goal!
the problem is these are designed to be appealing to people while the developers of concord designed them after their own irl bodies.
Ouch. Lol.
Welcome to the channel!
Honestly i like the form of the original more. Just the colors were bad
There's no comparison. This demonstrates the massive difference between a professional and a DIE hire.
Appreciate that!!!
Aside from being bland, the arms in the original seemed sickly and frail compared to the size of the legs.
Yep.
the design & shape of the helmet alone is a 100 times more inspired than her regular, bland "astronaut" look.
