THAT'S A MASK?! I thought he was supposed to be like a Space Mandrill and that was his species coloration quirk, clearly I gave this design more credit than it deserved.

Face mask? I always thought it was just his face. If only $150 million was enough to buy different textures to indicate different materials on 3D models.

Is actually not a mask. You can clearly see that his beard grows from it.
And he moves the whole face when he talks. And also has no feathers, if you see the cinematic is just dense hair.
This character was heavily misinterpreted by the artist.
Out of all the Concord redesign videos I've seen from other artists, yours are undoubtedly the best.

@@ASqdrnDA No, I meant in the redesigns. He's making the women feminine and attractive, whereas all others are making them masculine and ugly, and he's making the guys masculine and tough (and cool-looking too), whereas others are making them feminine and gay. That is how things should be.
The belt could be the sign of his hierarchy as tribal chief.
If it was my character, I'd base the design of the head feathers on Polish Roosters.

What makes the original design even worse, is that there are a couple of characters, twins, in the Guardians of the Galaxy game who not only look exactly like this guy, but also have super armor which acts just like this guys diamond skin.

Your design is way more interesting to look at. I didnt even know that was supposed to be feathers, i thought it was arm hair. I also like the way you about the belt, gives him this regal kind of aura. Great job!
i looked closely at the high res load in screen, and they're feathers. Unless it's just horribly rendered arm hair... lol
You took a Drax knock-off and turned him into a wrestler. This one is definitely the best one so far.
With how drastically different these redesigns make the characters, you essentially made completely new characters. Might as well make use of them in your own work
I think they stole the character from the actual guardians of the galaxy game. He looks awfully like the blood brothers.

Dude looks like a cross between an Aztec, Street Fighter's Blanka, Colossus, maybe a little bit of Conan, wearing a wrestling belt, and is wielding a shotgun?!
That's several separate layers of cool, throw them all into a blender, and out comes this absolute unit.

In original I've always thought how much it would be cooler if it wasn't just a dull leather belt, but the champion belt of wrestler
today was the day i noticed this guy had feathers, why would they paint it the same color, just hiding every aspect that makes him unique. looks like they played it so safe, so afraid to be creative

Giving him the vibe of a Mayan God nails the the "Star Child" idea.
And "the Cheetah" (yellow skin with greens and silver) is definitely my favourite skin for him.

@@BlacklistUniverse Nice! It was my first job out of school. I got an offer to go to Austin for I think System Shock, but Hollywood came calling first. Looking back I don't know if I made the right decision. :) Ion Dallas was such a shit show as a business but contained the most concentrated artistic talent I have ever worked with.
Jerry was good at recognizing talent. I brought Nghia's portfolio with me and first thing I did was tell them they needed to hire him, too. Jerry and Warren both agreed, and he basically got the job sight unseen. Nghia had never worked in games before, but ended up being his career. :D

Maybe "Star Child" is supposed to take inspiration from the giants born of women and celestial beings mentioned in many culture's traditions. Mike, your rendition feels like it could be a science-fiction reimagining of a Mexican or South American demigod in particular. Very cool!

First thing that came to mind when seeing the direction you took this redesign was Street Figher's Blanka.
The originals do look like discount Guardians of the Galaxy.
The more alien designs looked good.
This guy is just perfect for pummeling most everything to death in a D&D campaign.

I would’ve been really cool to tie the Aztec style of the belt in with the mask and then go with a peacock color scheme for his feathers.
That with some tribal tattoos and maybe a grass skirt could really paint the picture of this guy’s backstory, taking more inspiration from Kotal Kahn than Drax
Kinda reminds me of hellboy. Honestly, a comic book with this guy being a space bounty hunter or a supernatural something or other would be right up my alley.
The redesign is leagues ahead of the original and I love the tribal, Aztec kind of feel it ended up with though the expression kind of feels like he's bored to be there. I mean, so would I if I were in the game but if it's a mask (I never realised he was wearing a mask and thought it was just part of his alien biology) I'd go for a more fearsome/feral expression.
He does! He looks awesome👍 I think Star Children are a myth of some sort resulting from archeological work in Mexico or Central America. The feathers have a Quetzalcoatl vibe!

I like the redesign, but, the hair style is something I can't quite understand it. Don't know if leave it bald or change the hair style - though, this character is a difficult one to redesign. You did a good job 👍

I really like the yellow with black spots/tattoos variant. Maybe the pants could be less green, but I think that's my favourite alternate. I liked the mask and feathers you added, and the big shield on his stomach. It fits with his whole "honourable warrior" culture we saw in the trailer

Hey man there only so much you can do to fix a broken vase. There will always be cracks. I think if you made the boots a bit darker brown and be more leather like. I feel like someone that is that large would be in the wild hunting prey. So he would use that prey’s skin to fashion his garments. The golden yellow occupies so much space that it throws the balance off the entire character. Also that belt may be the dead carcass from one of his kills. I believe the juxtaposition of the skull in the belt with the leather boots in a darker tone will make him much more menacing. 🤔
The belt reminds me of the WWE belt the winner gets, wich is very fitting for him since his gameplay was alot a bout smashing his ennemies, its making him look like he earned the belt and that he is a champion of his tribe or something like that.
U could made his feathers on his head longer, not only good for the silhouette, it would make him look more like character that could eat children😂

I say the weight belt should be changed to a wrestler champion belt but the plate is broken and haft is missing.

I’m wondering how you’re gonna tackle that Duchess granny character tbh She seems so misplaced and I wonder what kind of direction you’ll go with her lol you think you’ll make her a bit younger or something?
One redesign saw was making her into a type of wizard/monk type of character. Which I feel like that works with what she her abilities in game are. Because nothing on her original design would indicate she can create walls or change the map terrain.
Duchess' "name" and her outfit all imply she's RICH. Rich old grannies spend a LOT of money keeping themselves looking young and fit- including getting plastic surgery- so she should look young, with skin that's shiny and plastic-like, to hint at her actual age.
Seriously, ask an ACTUAL granny, instead of the IMAGINARY grannies in the 'Concord' game developers' minds. If any of them could look 50 years younger, would even one of them turn down the offer?
The best comparison I've heard is that she's a knockoff dollar-store Sindel (Mortal Kombat) that looks like she just rolled out of bed.
A lot of possibilities to go with a wizened wizard that DON'T result in "trashy 2nd-rate game character knockoff".

I actually liked his original design (compared to others), but who in the right mind gave him, a big hulky beast man the name STAR CHILD?
Like set him next to a younger character you'll never guess thats his name, he needs a real masculine name.
i liked the yellow one the best. it seemed to wore best with the his features.
It does look a lot better than the original. Really like the more bestial approach by making the feathers more pronounced. Kinda has a more bulked out Hawk Man from Masters of the Universe vibe.
its not really a mask, more so like a part of his facial anatomy. also, i think its a crime they didn't make him wear a spiky/grim looking shoulder armor to use as a "weapon" for his charge attacks.
btw i kinda like how you made the feathers since one part of his kit makes his skin turn into diamond/hard crystal. maybe he hardens the feathers then uses the spiky quills as part of his charging attack? kinda cool.
Those people can't design for shit. I'm best friends with actual character designs (granted they're indie) and their works, and yours look three times as good as the slop concord's devs put out.
I didn't really see Drax, but I saw a bit more of the Gorilla guy from Overwatch honestly for some reason. I guess its more of the big Hulking figure. (Probably because when I think of Drax I think the MCU version as that was my first introduction to the character)
I like the Luchador Wrestler feel of this guy, I’d say it does the character design justice and it’s LEAGUES better than the original (no pun intended 😂)…
The white tribal tattoos really helps the design stick out better, and it’s a great contrast to the black feathers… I can imagine him being both a physical fighter, but with a sidearm shotgun in case he needs to go ranged (the only comparison I can think of would be SuperBrainz from PvZ GW2)

The redesign of Drax is a rip-off of the character Ka D'argo from the cult sci-fi TV series Farscape. In fact the MCU version of GOTG is an exact copy.
This redesign didn't work for me. He looks like a gorilla with feathers instead of fur.
Is it just me or does even the definition of Concord feels bland. It just says concord is an agreement and that's it, in contrast the definition of Overwatch is basically a military unit. Not much of a difference in definition, but the devs of this game couldn't even come up with a creative name?
To go with the feathers you could have skipped the boots and given him bird feet like emus or ostriches
Also, while I hear what you’re saying about not wanting him to be too garish, male birds tend towards loud attention grabbing colors and while this is largely to attract females it is also useful to focus attention of predators away from the rest of the flock

He looks pretty good, it gives me this wrestler vibe and i can see him doing poses, taunts and doing some smack-down. However i would have made the red face into more of a wrestling mask and reduce the feather (except the one in the head it could be hair instead) or change them into spikes that he can make them grow(like Nergigante from Monster Hunter world).
Still a far better look than the one in Concord.

I can image the reason they went sparse with the feathers (or fur?) is because of the metall plates he has on his shoulders, chest and I think back. If I remember correctly they are part of his diamond-skin thingy... But yeah, my info on this is patchy at best...
In any case, you're design once again doesnt disappoint :D Love the comments about why which choices are made. Character design is a lot more than just making cool or pretty or not so cool or pretty characters... A lot of planning goes into it and I'm there for it ^.^

@@BlacklistUniverse in 2020 I started game development with Unity. Last year I switched to Unreal so all my work went into the shitter 🤣. In a few years I would love to open a studio and I will hopefully be able to acquire your services as a freelance to design my characters as I really like your style! I find it clean yet elegant. And you really know how to portray the female body without it being in bad taste. That’s a rare skill 🫡

Mich better. Few notes: I don't think those are feathers, I think it's wavy fur, and I don't think that thing is a mask, or it is fused to his face, because he has matching red nubs coming off his shoulders. These points are not meant as criticisms. I only looked at the design closely because of comments here. He's covered in fur except for the red stuff, but you can only tell in the CG Video.

I'm not sure what to suggest for next redesign, maybe u could try ur own take on a space mage(the haymar or duchess one) or.....ugh a lot of chars hv terrible designs. Maybe ur own take on the robot spy would also be a good one but perhaps the mushroom alien or tupperware head would be my high priority for suggestion

Best redesign so far the original looks like drax cos playing badly as beast. Your redesign looks like a cool alien with many animal features, and that belt went from a power lifter to the WWE far better.

The one thing I would change is the face. It's still too human to be a believable alien IMO. Other than that, I think you're being way too hard on yourself for this design.
