B: it's pretty common in fiction to have field medics have Batman-like pouches for various medical devices. And IRL they often have several small pouches with stuff.
I think keeping him "big" while toning down the obesity was a good move. He looks more stocky and stolid now because as a field medic he's going to be carrying people, moving debris and rubble and other things that require a bit of muscle and heft. Plus it gives him an imposing sort of look which would help with any kind of intent to break any Geneva Convention like rules surrounding attacking medics.
A few things: 1) All this time I thought Daw was a woman (though that's probably intentional on Firewalk's part) 2) Between the goggles, the parka, and the gun, the original design was most definitely a Bond movie henchmen, skiing down mountain, shooting a comical number of bullets at 007.
As an overweight, insecure girl, I was always thrilled when I saw an overweight character treated with respect and dignity. Mary from Tobal No. 1 was my hero! She was big, but powerful, and dedicated to taking care of her son. I still always wanted to lose weight, but I was glad she was there, you know? Daw is supposed to be that character for a new generation, and I appreciate that idea. I think, though, that Mike's design gives him a sense of power, purpose and competence that people insecure about their bodies want to feel. Without that, the original design feels like it's saying "See how ridiculous you look, trying to do something cool?" Thanks, Mike!
He looks super buff now. One thing someone pointed out to me about the original design is that despite how obese he is, he doesn't have a double chin. It makes his head and body look like they don't go together.
Fun fact! The Red Cross symbol isn't copyright. It's Geneva Convention. Using the symbol in a sold product without Red Cross's permission is technically a Geneva Convention violation and they have in the past sent letters to game companies telling them to cease their use of the Red Cross. This is why many games color-swap it to green.
Same for companies selling first aid kits. The videogame one is ridiculous and clearly not the intent of the Convention, which is to stop armed forces abusing the marking on military assets.

Even a toddler could redesign these concord characters to be better 😭. You redesigned these characters to be light years better, and it takes a lot of creativity and skill to do that
You can justify the antenna by saying he often works in areas where there's a lot of background radiation or atmospheric distortions (from electrical storms, etc.) that disrupt transmissions from newer (antenna-less) devices, forcing him to use the older communications systems. A medic does need to regularly communicate with others, e.g., pilots flying medevac choppers (or their futuristic equivalents, maybe using antigravity devices to fly) and field hospitals who'll treat his patients once the medevac chopper brings them over. Though I thought his backpack was for a pavise (shield), so he can protect his patient and himself from enemy fire, while he treats the patient- in which case, the antenna should be moved elsewhere. Either way, excellent work on the redesign. I agree, seeing a fat medic is like seeing a bald barber, or a skinny chef.

Definitely interested in seeing your take from scratch on these characters! Do they actually have proper bios to describe the characters?
I love this you did a really good job and this is what positive constructive feedback looks like. It honestly makes me question if the original artists even bothered to put in this much love and work and how the hell it took them over 8 years to pinch out what they did.
An antenna could do wide range health scan, call for pick-up of more seriously injured, receive long range call for medical help...all kinds of legit reasons. Making it more of a panel or dish would add to that reasoning.
So, this redesign reminds me more of of a certain former Army medic I knew and less marshmallow. In Afghanistan, soldiers wear about 70lbs of kit. One day, a one-man Huskey vehicle (google if you need a visual) in the lead got hit with an IED. The medic, a large guy, climbed up the RPG cage and onto the roof of the downed vehicle wearing his kit, opened the top hatch, and with one arm pulled the unconscious soldier out. That unconscious soldier was also a larger guy, and wearing all that kit was pushing 250lbs of dead weight. The medic draped the casualty over a shoulder and climbs back down the vehicle. Everyone was very impressed, especially with the one-armed dead life (maybe there is a joke in there, I don't know). The medic was a large guy, but he did jog a full marathon and finished at a very average time for a 20-something year old male.
I dig a redesign based on a description/briefing, it's interesting to see how the principles come together in a complete workflow. Maybe you can use this to show underrated character designs you like :)
My suggestion would be to re-design other characters from woke garbage that just don't work. It would show your skill a lot more to make something good out of something bad in my opinion. This is also a bit of a middle-finger to the people that push these characters
I like this version a lot more. For sherton, I like the scrubs on his feet. Or crocs if you prefer lol I'd be psyched to play this character, honestly.
This may be you finest hour if you can make this design even remotely cool... -8 minutes later- ... Yup! He looks great👍 The antenna is probably so he can get reports back from the lab🤔
Sad to say, BlacklistUniverse consistently invests more THOUGHT and EFFORT- not to mention SKILL- into these designs, than the person who was actually PAID to design these characters!
Great fix on the design. I remember being quite surprised when I found out that that character was supposed to be some sort of a medic. Also turning him from 'couch potato obese' to 'strongman competitor obese' was a great idea. I vaguely remember something about a Seinfeld episode and puffy blue down jacket that led to some sort of disaster. And seeing how much better Daw looks without that same jacket is pretty hilarious.
just an interesting fact, most big games usually avoid using the Red Cross design for anything because the actual Red Cross might give them a cease and desist for improper use of the Red Cross symbol. i know that games like Among Us and Stardew Valley had to change their red cross symbol to another symbol to avoid getting sued by the Red Cross. they usually either use a green cross or a red/green asterisk as those also represent health/pharmaceuticals
Love the content. I found one of your videos tonight and ended up binging all of the redesigns. I don't watch drawing/animation content much, but I love your way of explaining through your drawings. I would love to see a full redesign from the character classes to see your full creativity come out, i feel like you are being limited in a sense by following someone else's poor design.
I quite like the idea of designing from an assumed brief rather than off an existing design. Would be an interesting thing to watch the thought processes involved.
I'd love to see your versions of these characters minus the parameters these artists seemingly had to work within. You've already made them way better, I can only imagine what you could do without trying to stick with the original designs
New sub here to give a quote I saw somewhere for comedic effect. "A doctor's job is to make sure you're healthy. A medic's job is to make sure you're alive." Daw's design is neither. 😂
HOLY CRAP. You just took some pear-shaped chungus that nobody even knew what his character was about, and not only made him look badass, but also vastly improved the role communication from the outfit. Flabbergasted. Sony dropped $200 million on this, and if they had you on staff, the game might actually have gone places with your redesigns. Also, with regard to the black coat--that could be an alternate skin for the guy--the whole MMO fantasy healer priest thing!
They probably spent months and months designing the characters, yet that was what they came up with 😂 Your redesign looks so much cooler and like a guy who could work on someone while under fire and not flinch as the shots whizz past, original looks like they'd spend most of their time puking from just taking a few steps.
Two things: NGL. You really put a lot of thought into redesigning the Concord Cast. As a Big Man (5’11.5 400+)…and you really gave the one character that EVERYONE agrees was the one that was the worst. And again, as a big man….you made Daw a Healer I want to main. You can totally make a believable story where all that bulk is actually (4% Fat & 92% & Maybe 4% Nanomachines to increase his senses)
If you are going to do the full redesign of the characters you have to get full in situation as if you were working for Sony and received the board of game directors lead: - 90's scifi film meets guardians of the galaxy - realistic proportions (for realistic looks, no stylization or heroic proportions) - main motive of the characters (we want 1 doctor/1 stealth focused robot/1 bulky robot/1 shootymacshooty face (soldier76)/1 tank (Reinhardt)/1 fast assassin (the fluid gender dagger throwing black woman) etc etc...
Oh, he's supposed to be a medic, hm? 😂 I have a suspicion that they made the doctor fat out of bitterness of their own doctors telling them they are unhealthy
Hearing you talk in general about redesign makes me wonder if you've delved into looking at the redesign community here on UA-cam at all. There's certainly some wildly creative people here on youtube that have certainly made redesigning into a kind of career on this platform, and it's really interesting to see how its developed, because they're tackling things that have been around for a while Like Callimara had started out redesigning the Yandere simulator characters, and then she moved onto the Miraculous Ladybug stuff, and now has made her own kind of characters and series? Only she's made it geared more towards adults, and redesigning AI generations scraped from has become something I've seen others delve into and done here. I like watching them because it certainly shows off other people's creativity, and there's a lot of it on this platform! In short, I say go for it, I'd definitely like to see those redesigns.
The only thing bad about this design is that the Red Cross would need to be re-worked. It’s a Geneva violation to allow the symbol of the Red Cross in video games, sadly. Other than that, great work

This is the best one yet. Form matches function very well. I was thinking an E.M.T./Combat medic motif would work as well.
Glad you like it!
My favorite redesign so far. Truce with the grenadier. Congratulations for your great work
Went from lard-ass to bad-ass.
lol
He does look way better for suretan
Thanks! Welcome aboard!
This version of DAW put down the donuts and started is Sigma Male Grindset arc
Yes! Brown is just dark orange!
And pink is light red! 😁🧡💖
@@amylester6958 It is!
Another great job. Looking good, congrats. Especially the scanner gauntlets, looks fancy and high tech.
Thanks! Welcome back!
Soo sick! Would also love to see a complete redesign for the characters where you aren’t bound to their looks and be more creative with it 👌
Noted! Hopefully the interest will still be there by the time I finish the initial series!
I like this version a lot more. For sherton, I like the scrubs on his feet. Or crocs if you prefer lol I'd be psyched to play this character, honestly.
Ah yes, the indian Peter Griffin gets a new design! Very nice
Yes! Do that concept about making concord characters from scratch, It would be neat
This may be you finest hour if you can make this design even remotely cool... -8 minutes later- ... Yup! He looks great👍 The antenna is probably so he can get reports back from the lab🤔
Thank you! Cheers!
This rendition of Dawc (Daw + Doc) would make Fillippino mothers proud
ha!
Running around a battlefield healing people would shave off those extra pounds pretty quick.
Would definitely be interested in seeing video game character concepts that you would make for a Hero Shooter game.
Amazing redesign. I really wanna see your approach on designing those characters from scratch
Maybe one day!
I love this series
Thanks!
@@BlacklistUniverse A second redesign from scratch sounds awesome. I think the way you explain design choices would be great for that!
We'll have to see how it goes. :D
I have learned. Welcome aboard!
I would love to see you redesigning characters from the scratch with just the idea behind them.
stay tuned!
It would take more thought, that's for sure.
I'd love to see your versions of these characters minus the parameters these artists seemingly had to work within. You've already made them way better, I can only imagine what you could do without trying to stick with the original designs
I just might have to do that.
Very nice! 👍🏻 The designers don’t seem to understand male/female anatomy differences.
I'd like to see more redesigns, and explanations of the design process, regardless of what characters you are working on.
New sub here to give a quote I saw somewhere for comedic effect.
"A doctor's job is to make sure you're healthy. A medic's job is to make sure you're alive."
Daw's design is neither. 😂
Daw (probably) : "Do as I say, and not as I do!" XD
I'd actually love to see you design brand new characters with just the functions.
I just might have to do that. Welcome to the channel!
Never trust s skinny chef!
The Red Cross is gonna trademark troll you with this design.
Yeah I'd cosplay that outfit but in black.
They probably spent months and months designing the characters, yet that was what they came up with 😂 Your redesign looks so much cooler and like a guy who could work on someone while under fire and not flinch as the shots whizz past, original looks like they'd spend most of their time puking from just taking a few steps.
He did look like a walking pear in a down jacket...
@@BlacklistUniverse Basically a walking meme!
Made me think of Trauma Team from cyberpunk, very nice!
I'm not familiar?
@@BlacklistUniverse It's a fictional corporation of military trained medics in cyberpunk universe.
I would watch all your redesigns based on function!👍
I just like watching your content. found you by concord but going to stick around
Epic. Hope you can make the livestreams!
I would love to see the ground up redesign videos.
Cross your fingers that these videos keep going well, and I will! Welcome aboard!
That’s always go for cool... how did they think their characters were cool looking... they are so unhinged.
the black coat version could go with a plague doctor skin
Truth
The dark green coat looked really nice! Military grade.
Good choice!
Two things:
NGL.
I'm glad you like it so much, that's very nice to hear. ;)
Based on the silhouette, looks like you made a healer who can tank a not insignificant amount of damage too.
If you are going to do the full redesign of the characters you have to get full in situation as if you were working for Sony and received the board of game directors lead:
- 90's scifi film meets guardians of the galaxy
- realistic proportions (for realistic looks, no stylization or heroic proportions)
- main motive of the characters (we want 1 doctor/1 stealth focused robot/1 bulky robot/1 shootymacshooty face (soldier76)/1 tank (Reinhardt)/1 fast assassin (the fluid gender dagger throwing black woman) etc etc...
I am actually going to need to work up a more specific list than that if I'm to do that series...
It’s basically destiny 2 crucible. That’s crazy to design your game around a mode nobody plays
I think you did rather good on this one and it's my favourite so far. Also unless I was told I couldn't tell the original wasn't a woman.
Oh, he's supposed to be a medic, hm? 😂 I have a suspicion that they made the doctor fat out of bitterness of their own doctors telling them they are unhealthy
Lol. Likely!
I say making him more of a PJ would be good.
Hey man. Yeah, would like to see you create new characters for Concord and even do the same or with other games.
Thanks, will contemplate! Welcome aboard!
Other than that, great work
I'm up for your idea of redesigning the roster from scratch.
Idk why but in og design I hated the hair so much. Can't explain why, but it was just pissing me off
