A black samurai is historically accurate there was one in 1579 in Edo Japan and his name was Yasuke. I appreciate everyone going to race it really shows how small minded you all are
And? Demographics prove majority of gamers are male, you trying tell Japanese males they are free game to be robbed of male representation in a game set in Japan in favour of a black dude who historically was ultra rare minoriry in area and only active for 18 months (which they could have added as DLC and none would have complained ) and point as excuse there is a female Japanese char option? Really?
@@galadballcrusher8182 I hope that no one of them was waiting for an assasin's creed game, and they are not underrepresented, many japanese games have japanese male protagonists. The games target audience is also not the japanese gamers but the western gamers

Prolly cause for Italy we had Italian, for greece we had greek, for Jerusalem we had an Iraqi, for a native a native American, for France we had a Frenchman, we had some Brits and Welshmen. We had am Egyptian at Egypt. We had a slave that became a self made man and a great assassin. So if i was Japanese i would want to play as a Japanese man in a game happening in Japan. Everything has its appropriate place. Thats why games made in Japan will always be better that the newer Western ones.
It’s because Asian MALES rarely gets representation from video games. The only outlier I can think of is Ghost of Tsushima. Essentially it is a black dude (yasuke) is taking a MAIN role away from an underrepresented demographic group (Asian man). Edit 1: Change “unrepresented” to “underrepresented”.
Japan is a big ass entertainment country (makes lots of video games and movies) Unless you’re playing 99% American games there should be a shit ton of Asian protagonist to play as😂
I want an Assassins Creed game set in Ethiopia where I play as a white Italian Assassin among African Assassins & just being the only white Assassin set in the 1800s Simply because there was a white man there historically during that time.
Yeah it’s weird. The only thing me personally I’m worried about is micro transactions and if the story/gameplay is dog shit. But guess what, we don’t know yet since all we got was a CINEMATIC TRAILER.
This is Last Samurai all over again. "Its historically accurate but we purposely chose this timeframe so that we can have a non-japanese male lead in a samurai story."
@@tutsandreacts8021 because 99% of samurai were Japanese men. They decided to give us 2 main characters in this game and chose to go with the 1% for both of them.
Representation matters right? So yes people are going to be upset. But I for one am tired of everything having to have a black character for the sake of inclusion. It’s a trope now and it’s getting old
Historical accuracy or not, if its going to be an assassin's creed game, then its going to suck major booty ass because the franchise has been dead since Revelations.
It's funny how people are entitled to different opinions here, but some say it like it's a fact, and then try to ridicule each other by being satirical.
I mean, it's like if you had a game about vikings and had some guy from mongolia was the one you played as for half the time. Or a game about Zulu warriors and the whitest man in history takes up half the game time. People saw a game about assassins in Japan and were expecting to play as Japanese people. People were upset when the movie Gods of Egypt had a cast of almost all white people, or any anime live action that casts non-japanese or asian people, so I'm not sure why you're surprised about this.
Half the game?? Yasuke will probably be mandatory for a few missions for story reasons, but do you honestly think that would cover half the game? In Syndicate I only played as Jacob for the mandatory missions and the rest was as Evie. Out of all those hours I put into that game I don't think my time as Jacob even covered 5%... And Shadows is going to have waaay more content than Syndicate.
@@halosaftthere’s only two playable characters in this game. So yeah it would only make sense that half of the game was from his point of view. Also the person you play as in the modern time has always had minimal play time in all of the creed games. Not sure how he relates to the two characters set in the past rather than the present.
@@Zown-ej3fl What are you even on about..? Who was talking about the modern world person? They're so irrelevant I don't even know who the modern world person is in any game after AC3... Jacob and Evie are the two twin assassin's in Syndicate that you can switch between during gameplay. Jacob is more melee combat focused and Evie is more stealth focused. And how does that make any sense at all? Sure, if it was a 100% story focused game with no exploration or side content what so ever, and the game has 2 protagonists then it would make sense to think that you'd spend 50% of the game with each of them. But the game isn't that. You know this is an open world game, right? And if it's anything like the previous titles it's going to have at *least* 120h of content. With only a few missions that require you to play as Yasuke for story reasons. How long could that reasonably take? 3-5h? Depending on how many missions are mandatory as Yasuke. How is that anywhere close to half the game?
Right I ion care as long as I get a bond with the character(s) with a good story with an amazing ending honestly but gameplay is a big part too and ubi has definitely went in some different direction
It’s bc ur missing the point. Yasuke was only picked bc he was black. Let’s be real the devs only did it to save face and look good since they could have picked any other Japanese figure for the role. I have no hate for black actors or characters but have a game set in Africa because they are taking roles away from Asian male actors. I’m Asian and it’s like saying a Chinese guy got full armour weapons and ended up fighting in like the Zulu wars as a Zulu. AND other races are not rlly shown that much in media. Like if the protagonist is white they are useless or weak. We also don’t really get to see much of other races as well in modern media as much as blacks. Edited to clarify. Also if u look at the list of assassins creed main characters there are 0 I mean 0 main main Asian male characters 3 women on that list 2 blacks cournign Yasuke(not counting spin offs) 2 Arab and 7 white.
People are happy with it, most people aren't so damn angry about playing as a minority or a woman suprise suprise. Not everyone is a white man or japanese man and people like to be represented from all walks of life
Supreme Commander Koxinga back in China 12th century, led his army of heavy Ming troops, Japanese ronins (and wakou), African and Portugese mercenaries fought against Dutch in Taiwan. Not sure about Japan, but black people had already been trader, doctor, even warrior in China since ancient time.
And the funny thing is I actually went to Japanese festival yesterday and asked around and yes they confirmed he was real and the Japanese are very excited to play the game
No its cuz every ac protag has been from there own country but as soon as its a japanese game its a black guy when we wanted to play as an japanese guy and girl plus yes ac has never been historrically accurate but now they are trying to say its historrically accurate when its not and there only adding it to be woke
@Justsomerandomdude397 It's pretty clear what I said lol. People wanna play as an actual Japanese Samurai, which is Asian in a game set in Japan. Every other AC has made the native protagonist of their country the main character.
Anddd Ubisoft apologizes i guess it was a pretty big deal to the Japanese and I guess historical accuracy did matter I little bit Especially considering a lot of info on yaskue is a lie thanks to Thomas lockley

Ubisoft scoured all of Japanese history to find the one black man in all of their history who MIGHT have accomplished something beyond seeing the port and we all know why. To pander to you so you give them money for more lazy slop, and look at you, eating up that slop
No you are reaching. Y’all are complaining before seeing gameplay. It really makes yall look stupid. Idk about you but I play a game for the gameplay. What the character does matters. For example. The Witcher 3 to me is a terrible game. Not because of his culture or ethnicity. The protagonist is cool. But his fighting style is booty cheeks. He moves in a way that I find lukewarm. When you think of a samurai the first thing that comes to people minds isn’t the fact that whoever it is happens to be an Asian man. It’s the SWORD. So if that’s to be believed we can assume the most thing that should matter is how he wields the sword. AC is the most fictional history game ever. Name me a black protagonist driven game that you played that wasn’t miles morales.
The thing is, knowing ubisoft, they definately did this just to gain profit from forced diversity. Distracting players by causing a controversy is actually genius. But I don't think that would ever work now, since almost every assassins creed game after origins have been complete sh#t.
It actually makes it slightly more interesting if you really understand the sengoku era. The era with arguably the most bloodshed. The assassin being one of the famous warlords known across all Japan wouldn’t even make sense story wise. However AC hasn’t made sense really ever. It’s fiction. Yall want things to be accurate bcus the protagonist is black. Make em slave right? 😂 no room to make something fictional and maybe good? It’s a video game. Just don’t buy it
@MartyrOfNoir he was never a samurai doe the biggest reason their can't be a movie about him is the fact he was basically just the fact oda nobunaga used him as a jester in making him do tricks to entertain his guests its actually kinda fucked
@@walter2201He was a Koshō(bodyguard, attendant, or secretary), which was the status that was a level below a samurai, but a koshō was still a high rank of which eventually did become a samurai. Yasuke also did fight on the front lines side by side with Oda Nobunaga's son, Oda Nobutada. Is it possible that Yasuke later became a samurai by the time the Honnō-ji incident happened. A war of which they lost because of the betrayal of Mitsuhide Akechi or Hideoyoshi Toyotomi. But towards this the end of this time, his story becomes a bit murky. Even if he was a retainer, he would have fought since he came to Japan during the Sengoku era, which was a period of constant war, assassinations, betrayal, and corruption.
Be real, this was not a narrative choice. They choose a female and a black man to stick it to the chuds. Did anyone have a issue with GTA San Andreas? That was a narrative choice. If they wanted a black lead, do a black story. Seriously, pretty much no one outside Japan even knew who Yasuke was before this nonsense. It's offensive to Japanese and African culture. Pretty much saying they don't think a black historical story would sell. A black female and/or male trying to stop the slave trade in Africa in the 17 or 1800s sounds like a good story to me.
If anything. I'm waiting for release and see what the general audience thinks. I don't trust gamers on the internet anymore. They make real racist groups look calm and composed.
Hey buddy in 1579 in Edo Japan there was a black Samurai wanna know his name? Yasuke he was also known as the great unifier and not much is known about him according to popular lore his death was found out by his son when he opened a box with his head in it
Well maybe you would be upset when the first creed game based in your country is coming out soon and you find out the main character isn’t even from your country. Maybe y’all should read the comment section of the Japanese version of this trailer and come back to me trying defend this game. Every single comment I have read so far from Japan has been calling this game racist and cultural appropriation.
The japanese people who responded don't really have a problem With a black man being one of the protagonists So I really don't understand where the hate is coming from
In their defense, every medium of art, even AI, has tokenistic characters being inserted with no rhyme or reason than sanctimony. It's transparent, tired, and undermines the work. In this case however it's kinda sick cause he actually existed.
Imagine they made an assassins creed game in Africa but made the main character white or Asian. There would be so much more backlash and probably a canceled game. If the game is made to showcase Japanese people and culture, then the main character should reflect that
But it wasnt made to showcase to japanese ppl and culture its like all the other games. Meant to depict a hyperbolic story of assassins, the characters they choose are a product of the story they take from. This time it was the warring Sengoku period which was majorily Japanese
No it wouldn't be backlashed because everyone is just using this as a counter to the obvious fact they're racist. There was literally 0 backlash for Nioh 1 have a white protag or multiple other movies or shows like Shogun having a white protag, the problem is you hate black people. That's it
Yea but it was all good when they made a movie called “Last Samurai” starring Tom Cruise tho right? Foh, ive heard that same lame excuse about Assassins creed “Africa” so it must be making the rounds in 8chan 😂
And technically if u want to tally up which group has done the most culture appropriation in the last few decades, let alone centuries!….its largely the same “group” we have making these same asinine complaints about freakin fictional video games of all things (i doubt the Japanese are even complaining). Lets all thank Trump and his minions for collectively teaching these smooth brains to accuse everything they dont like as “woke” 😂 God help us all.
@Cuayo444 I know with the way they talk about the shadows system it definitely sounds like your going to want to bring the chick on some missions, and yeah I hope that mace can bash down doors to skip through some areas that would require stealth inviting a more intense mission. Either way, I just hope that the experience for each protagonist is more then a few states and more like choose between Basim and Evior totally different.
Problem is he was a sword holder...and was also a secretary he did not see any battle we have no records of it and if you say that there are records yet the wiki page had been edited to Oblivion and back. It is a culture war
Clearly you haven’t looked at the comment section in the Japanese trailer for this game. If every single creed fan in Japan is calling this racist and cultural appropriation then I’m gonna have to agree with them on it.
If Assassin's Creed fans wouldnt make stuff about race or gender every game, we'd be enjoying these a lot more. Yasuke was a real person, and a badass Kunoichi with a tiny sleeve katana going around slaughtering armies of samurai is awesome, get over it.
He was real, a real servant, that carried weapons and equipment, and hung out in the back of the army, since he couldn't speak japanese or hold a sword properly. He was a pack mule and a side show for them.
It's not that the historical accuracy matters, what matters is that Ubisoft made him (Yasake, who wasn't a samurai btw) into the main character solely because of his race and soley to push their woke ideology into the game.
Hasnt Assassin's creed taken liberties with historical figures since the beginning? Or did DaVinci really have an in with an assassin order during his life?
Sure a slave was given a samurai stipend from one of the most famous historical figures in Japanese history, his own house, and a sword but nah bro was a slave. Over time he gained the position of weapon bearer which is a position of much respect. It's never been stated he even wielded a blade or armour, as well as the fact due to the trailer His Wikipedia has been updated. So not everything may be fact
I knew of a black man in feudal Japan who was believed to be a samuraI. I assumed because he was most likely the only black person on the island, making him an exotic pet of sorts, he was given some of the duties of a samurai. After looking for more about it, I haven't found anything of significance aside from who he served, and surrendering rather than die in battle. I see why people are upset by this, he obviously isn't from the region like most characters are. Most main characters are usually nobodies who bump into historical figures. Had he been in game as a side character, this may not have been any issue.
@@LurkerBelowwell that's the point of having him as a main character. Because it give studio the free will to do what they want with the character. Like you said not much is documented which is perfect for making a main character

There isn’t much documentation of his title but from how he was treated, it can be assumed he was either a kosho or bushi both of those titles are in the samurai category 😭
Both of those protagonists are questionable and I am aware very well female Shinobi existed. Yasuke was no samurai, most likely didn't consider himself one and what is clear wasn't considered to be one by his contemporaries. Further in sources he is referred to as bushi which is not synonymous with samurai. Every samurai is bushi but not every bushi is a samurai. Further just like in the case of Miura Anjin he would not possess swordsmanship skills equal to a samurai. The choice of the character is dictated purely to cause controversy in hope the game is not going to flop. Not to mention it is a shameless pandering towards targeted demographics in the US. Now what I recommend to the author of the short is to grab a book and learn how to address people in a polite way cause one thing is painfully obvious, his parents didn't teach him how to.

Sword barrier ( basically a living sword stand) yosuke main duty was to carry nobunagas sword. Besides that's the main reason for his purchase was his skin. Yosuke's was rare( he had black skin which was unique and eye catching in Japan) Nobunaga liked collecting rare items and yosuke was certainly rare. Back then when nobunaga walked with yosuke it was akin to seeing a white tiger. Basically he was used as a symbol of nobunagas wealth and connection. Facts
I think u mean origins an beyond I think it rlly started to go downhill for a lot of reasons
Who cares it's a video game u dupes
Gamers dont care about the games . Gameplay and fun is far removed from modern gaming
Right I ion care as long as I get a bond with the character(s) with a good story with an amazing ending honestly but gameplay is a big part too and ubi has definitely went in some different direction

Yasuke was never a samurai. Insted of making him an actual samurai, Ubisoft could've made him another assassin.
Edited to clarify. careful there you might strain your arm with all that reaching
He is part of the final years of the legendary Japanese figure Oda Nobunaga, dont have to look very far to find him

Internet's bitching about Yasuke, meanwhile I'm UwU-ing over Naoe lol XD

First off Yasuke wasnt a samurai he was a servant of Nobunaga but more importantly every other assassins creed game had a protagonist thats race matched up with where it was set such as the protagonist of Mirage being egyptian. So why is it that the first assassins creed game set in asia cant have an asian male protagonist
It has an Asian woman but I guess because it’s not a man it’s not good enough representation and Black Flag didn’t have the race match with game location if we’re gonna go there.
@@Cuayo444Because the theme was pirates, a multicultural Representation in that game made sense. Besides Black flag was amazing. and you can't use Naoe's gender as a deflection tool. Backlash is not about gamplay and story because ubisoft showed us nothing and just set stupidly big prices xD
Completely agree. People who clearly know little to nothing of Assassin's Creed are shitting on Shadows for no good reason. Assassin's Creed has always been historical *fiction*, not showing our real life history but what the in-game lore calls real history. Yasuke was real and Ubisoft is fictionalising his life. Like they have fictionalised history in literally every AC game. It's that simple.
And for those asking why Yasuke, I say why not?
Because in a game centered around Japan people want to play a Japanese guy.
You take the Japanese culture for profit but don’t think they’re worth being the main characters. That’s crazy
Why is EVERYONE IGNORING NAOE? She's a Japanese shinobi to play as, right there. And everyone's pretending like she doesn't exist as a protagonist... wtf
@@kutticherrypaultomytomy7554 we know about her. We’re wondering where the second Japanese main character is
@@Luis-rp2lm I know it seems woke as hell to choose Yasuke as the protagonist but it is well within Ubisoft's creative choice to do so. Because Yasuke was real. They're not just making shit up, he was a real black man in medieval Japan. So basically Ubisoft has the absolute right to create a protagonist more or less based on any real person who existed in Japan at that time and so Yasuke is a legitimate choice, cuz he was real. His ONLY difference from a Japanese samurai is his skin colour, so why the big hate? Assassin's Creed has always been about fictitious versions of real history and Shadows is a fictitious spin on the real Yasuke's life.
It's solely an fear/anticipation of Ubisoft's wokeness that's causing this reaction. Literally nothing wrong with playing as Yasuke.
A black slave story is the best story of all time like it’s a from the bottom to the top kind of story everyone loves that shit

gives us two perspectives: one of an outsider, and one of a native. It's an interesting dynamic for the story.

@@gamerhex7335Oh also the fact that neither are part of the order, The only thing that's assassin's creed in this game is the hidden blade. As well as Odyssey and Valhalla. Doesn't matter anyway, It's just going to be inferior ghosts of Tsushima.

Also theybreally missed an oportunity to make a tenchu like video game as assassins creed is kinda similar. Now they lost the opportunity with the japanese settings. It should be ninjas assassins against samurai templars. + This character they chose doesn't blend in. He cannot be an assassin. I think people wouldn't be mad if they made a stand alone game without using the brand "assassins creed" a story about the one black samurai. That would be different. If it's it's set in japan it should be a japanese protagonist.
Y’all people do know there was a black samurai right?

Sword barrier ( basically a living sword stand) yosuke main duty was to carry nobunagas sword. Besides that's the main reason for his purchase was his skin. Yosuke's was rare( he had black skin which was unique and eye catching in Japan)
Nobunaga liked collecting rare items and yosuke was certainly rare. Back then when nobunaga walked with yosuke it was akin to seeing a white tiger. Basically he was used as a symbol of nobunagas wealth and connection.
No historical evidence show yosuke actually fought or lead in battle. Another thing is that samurai is akin to nobility. Not every japanese warrior was a samurai. You needed to be born in particular class to be one.
