The band I grew up with! Argus was the album which changed my tastes in music for ever when I was 16. I have probably been searching for that Argus moment with music ever since. If you try Phoenix from the first album I think you might make the Freebird association again!

I listened to it a long time ago. I think it might require another listen.

Mate, I'm just so so glad you've found this absolute gem of a song, buried under decades of music - the lyrics are deep and rhoughtful, and musically, the part you refer to before the guitar comes in, in the instrumental section is a bass line - and what a bass line! Thunderous, melodic, driving, hypnotic, it draws you into the song and sets you up for two of the most wonderful and exhilarating guitar solos ever committed to vinyl. Like you say, the gorgeous tone of the guitar is what keeps you in the zone, along with the structure of the solos, which are never clichéd and laborious, but uplifting and positive. For me its one of the finest rock tracks out there. And the rest of the album Argus will also carry you away. Enjoy my friend - Argus is a real hidden treasure. Soak it up.

Very insightful reaction. Yes that is Martin Turners bass driving the song along combined with Steve Uptons fabulous drumming. They became so intuitive of each others playing over the years. Regards Freebird ,actually I think Skynnrd did get inspiration for that song from Wishbone Ash but I'd say Phoenix which I remember you covered some time ago .. I strongly recommend Jailbait from the Pilgrimage album, Way of the World from No Smoke Without Fire , Lifeline from Just Testing . Mother of Pearl from New England, Errors of my ways from Wishbone Ash & Don't Come back from There's the Rub . A superb live band & as you say such a fluid crystal clear guitar tone as always . Enjoy your journey through their back catalogue 😊

it's a fantastic track The uplifting energy is off the charts. It does remind me of Yes in a lot of ways, although come to think of it, your Freebird comparison makes some sense with the way that song jams out like this one does.

Had no Idea going in that I would get freebird vibes from the song. However it has blown me away listening to it each time.

I saw them in San Antonio in the mid 70's and remember it as an awesome performance. Back then no radio station would play any song longer than 3 minutes. There were "underground" stations which played longer playing songs. That was how I was introduced to David Bowie,America,Shawn Phillips,Uriah Heep,Yes,Alice Cooper,Mahavishu Orchestra,Blue Oyster Cult, and more. Eventually,in order to have their music heard by a larger audience, they released songs of shorter duration.
Saw Shawn Phillips twice in the early 70's in San Antonio(Hall&Oats opened for him in one of those concerts). He has a 4 octave range and still performs. A favorite song is:
She Was Waiting For Her Mother At The Station In Torino And You Know I Love You Baby But It's Getting Too Heavy To Laugh
ua-cam.com/video/hPn48pfkLgo/v-deo.html from his Second Contribution album(1970)
